If I take this first episode on face value...

And ignore the knowledge of the original novel that this is loosely based on, I would say that for a Netflix type series - this is a reasonable start. The plot is wavy, going from medical science exploration to low-level state authorities manhunt story, with the blood & gore from a vampire angle thrown in. The dialogue is standard network procedural, nothing racy or profane, no sex or overt violence, other than the inclusive vampire attack scenes. The real story is the buddy relationship between Dr Luther Swann and his best friend Michael Frayne, and the prion disease that comes between them, according to the writers. So far I am not seeing a master plan, or even any reasoning behind the events that transpire, which don't become apparent on either side of this war until episodes 4 & 5. I could critique every bad decision a character makes, which there are many, but it would add much to the analysis overall. Preferably wait until the story arc is firmly on its way and the characters and plot arc are firmly established.

Interesting new premise

So many zombies and vampires TV shows, and this is another derivative of the others, but with a paleo-twist. It was quite excited watching a good-looking casts, and some pretty amazing cinematography; It has promises to be my new favourite. Basically, a research scientist, Dr. Luther Swann, is afraid that global warming will uncover / re-discover ancient pathogens that might put humans on an expiry date projection: extinction. He went with his buddy , Michael Fyane, to Antarctica to investigate an outpost that had lost contact. Fayne becomes patient zero, and D. Swann a chronic carrier of prion...(not a virus).

Love the Irony here

As a lover of vampire shows - I was delighted in seeing both Ian Somerholder (Vampire Diaries) and Nigel Bennett (Forever Knight) together in the first episode! They played vampires before - now they are scientists on the mortal side of the field! Wish Bennett had been in more than one episode.

If you are easily amused, this one is for you...

Warning: Spoilers
... but not because it wants to be funny.

From my notes:

  • Straight from the "The Day After Tommorow"-school of writing: Give a lecture about a potential desaster, and get a call right afterwards bedcause that desaster is about to unfold

  • Straight from the "Christian Bale School of Acting"- act very maculine and serious by making your voice sound deeper and talk like a chain smoker in the morning: Ian Sommerhalder really was desperate for work, recalling the Trivia page from this series

  • Women in this episode have only two characteristics: Being horny and entitled. They still are better off than children, who only get to stand around looking sad. I guess this will satisfy the crowd that likes to comment on everything how "Hollyweird" is all SJW lately.

-Following classic horror formula from the 90s, no one even thinks calling for professionals, like the police, but since the only cop we see is - another classic - corrupt, that's maybe justified. Instead it's left to the asian - of course- tech-savy journalist to solve the big mystery. You knoiw, the one that puts the V in V-Wars. I'm so excited to figure out what it is. Because...

-... at least vampires still like blood and are not only romance options that sparkle in the sun. But still no reason to call the police or anyone who could help solve the whole thing so we will never have to suffer through a second season.

Damn, now it has spoilers in it. It's vampires. Sorry for that.
