Oscar nominees Kodi Smit-McPhee and Djimon Hounsou are set to star in claustrophobic thriller “The Zealot.”
The two-hander, being introduced to buyers in Cannes by WestEnd Films, comes from director Vadim Perelman working from a screenplay by Bennett Fisher, and touches on themes involving privilege, paranoia, and the assumptions we make about one another.
“The Zealot” follows Hassan, a Somali-American airport shuttle driver in Minneapolis, who is struggling to make ends meet. When Lloyd, a stranded twentysomething at the airport, offers to pay Hassan to take him overland to Chicago, it seems worth the risk. But as the realization grows that his passenger is not what he seems, Hassan finds he is trapped in a terrifying ride which he can’t escape from, knowing that to save himself might put countless others in danger.

Following a limited theatrical release, director Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire (read our review Here) was released through the Netflix streaming service back in December, then Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver (read our review of that one Here) reached the service last month… but we’ve known from early on that these PG-13 versions of the movies wouldn’t be the only versions we’d see. Snyder has also put together extended director’s cut of both films, which will each have around an hour of additional footage. They’re expected to be released through Netflix sometime this summer, possibly in August, and the director’s cut of Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire just got its rating from the Motion Picture Association ratings board. It earned an R for brutal bloody violence and gore, sexual content, graphic nudity and language.

The folks at Platinum Dunes, the production company headed up by Michael Bay and Bradley Fuller, clearly love working with director Jonathan Liebesman. After working with Liebesman on the Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, they had him attached to direct their reboot of Friday the 13th for a while – and even though Liebesman wasn’t at the helm of that one by the time it went into production, they did work with him again, on their 2014 version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Now, a decade later, Platinum Dunes and Jonathan Liebesman are re-teaming for a werewolf movie called Wolf Night.
Deadline wasn’t able to dig up much information on Wolf Night, but they did learn that the project is being described as “District 9 by way of The Purge“. Will Honley, whose writing credits include Escape Room: Tournament of Champions, wrote the screenplay with April Maguire.

In the annals of famous movie monsters, it's arguable that the creatures from 2018's "A Quiet Place" rank fairly low. After all, following the release of the first film and 2021's "A Quiet Place Part II," we still don't have an official name for the extraterrestrial beasties that decide to come to Earth one fine day and start mowing down everything that makes a peep. At least the creatures' most recent cinematic progenitor, the Cloverfield monster, has a name by virtue of his film's offbeat title. The "Quiet Place" aliens have to settle for being unofficially dubbed "Death Angels," a term taken from a newspaper headline clipping seen posted on a board in the first movie.
That said, us monster kids' loss is cinema's gain, because it is the very unknowability of the Death Angels which lend the "A Quiet Place" films such spooky, tense power. Put simply, the franchise...

As a film actor, Emily Blunt has become one of the jack of all trades of her generation, shining in dramas, comedies, musicals, romances, war films and even horror movies. Who can do all that? But with each new project, Blunt challenges herself to take risks into new arenas that she has never tried before, a boldness that has earned her critical respect across the board.
Although Blunt has yet to be nominated for an Academy Award (a shocking oversight that I trust will be rectified one day), she has been nominated for five Golden Globes for her film work, four BAFTA Awards and three Screen Actors Guild Awards, including a win for her performance in “A Quiet Place.” That film, directed and co-written by her husband John Krasinski, became an unexpected smash hit and generated a sequel, appropriately named “A Quiet Place Part II.”

Unlike A Quiet Place and A Quiet Place Part 2, John Krasinski isn’t in the director’s chair and didn’t write the screenplay. Instead, Michael Sarnoski takes over as writer and director. Like the previous Quiet Place films, Day One presents a postapocalyptic world where making the slightest sound summons bloodthirsty alien creatures hellbent on destruction. The twist this time is that it focuses solely on “the day the world went silent,” as the movie’s official synopsis puts it, beginning with shots of a noisy New York City.

Lupita Nyong’o goes silent to stay alive amid an alien invasion of New York City in the trailer for John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place: Day One, which dropped on Wednesday.
The prequel’s teaser opens to Nyong’o walking peacefully with a cat in her arms when a nearby crash signals the first horrific moments of blind, monster-like aliens crashing to Earth and hunting down anything that makes a sound.
A Quiet Place: Day One diverges from worlds of A Quiet Place 1 and Part II in following Nyong’o as she navigates a New York City in which aliens run amok and terrified people run for cover amid apocalyptic devastation.

New Yorkers minding their own business when aliens attack from the sky? That sounds like a Cloverfield! Well, the first Cloverfield from 2008, anyway.
The teaser for the film promised hip New York teens filming themselves during an alien invasion. Between the Escape from New York homage and the name “J.J. Abrams” — better known at the time for Alias and Lost instead of Star Trek Into Darkness or Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker — the Cloverfield trailer created a buzz that concealed the finished product from director Matt Reeves and writer Drew Goddard.
Cloverfield left viewers hungry for a sequel that further developed the world, and Paramount was quick to acquiesce. But instead of giving fans another found footage chronicle of the central monster’s attack on New York, Abrams’s production company Bad Robot retrofitted a project called The Cellar into 10 Cloverfield Lane, directed by Dan Trachtenberg and written by Josh Campbell,...

When you look back on them, A Quiet Place and A Quiet Place: Part II were all about restraint – intended to pitch viewers into a world of near-total silence, and subsequently dread every single tiny noise for fear of alien annihilation. And they proved highly effective horror-thrillers, anchored in character and brilliantly directed by John Krasinksi. But the first trailer for A Quiet Place: Day One offers a different angle on those ideas – plunging us head-first into a world of total noise and chaos, as the audibly-motivated extra-terrestrial creatures decimate New York City. As you might guess, it looks incredibly intense. Stick your seatbelt on, and watch the trailer here:
Blimey. We previously got a glimpse of ‘Day One’ of the alien attack in Part II, and that was pure carnage even just in a slice of smalltown America. The big city – the biggest city, in fact, the Big Apple...

For the next installment in the blockbuster “A Quiet Place” franchise, things are going back to the start.
Set to arrive in theaters this year, “A Quiet Place: Day One” will detail the origins of the alien invasion that wiped out the Earth’s noisiest citizens by focusing the action on what happened to residents of New York City on the day the sound-sensitive monsters from space first attacked.
The prequel film, which will debut on June 28, stars Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o and “Stranger Things” breakout Joseph Quinn as a pair of unlikely allies in the early stages of the alien onslaught. “Pig” filmmaker Michael Sarnoski wrote and directed “A Quiet Place: Day One” with a story assist from original franchise director John Krasinski.
“When you have a family, there is an innate expectation that they will want to stick together. We don’t have that in this film,” Nyong’o told Entertainment Weekly.

Hold your breath, silence your phone, and crank up the anticipation – the trailer for ‘A Quiet Place: Day One’ has dropped, and it’s turning up the volume on fear. This prequel to the heart-pounding horror series takes us back to day one of the alien invasion, but this time, the setting is far from the tranquil farm fields. We’re thrown into the chaotic heart of New York City, where the usual cacophony is replaced by a chilling silence – one broken only by the terrifying shrieks of unseen monsters.
The trailer throws us right into the action, with glimpses of panicked crowds, desperate scrambles through deserted streets, and the ever-present fear of making a sound. Lupita Nyong’o stars as Sam, a visitor to the city when the invasion hits, and Joseph Quinn (‘Stranger Things’) joins her as Eric, another survivor. "A Quiet Place" had a fairly simple premise. The Abbott family (which includes John Krasinski and Emily Blunt) struggles to survive in a ravaged post-apocalyptic world swarming with blind extraterrestrials with a heightened sense of hearing, making near-silence crucial to the fates of everyone involved. A singular, accidental sound could spell death for anyone, leading to heartbreaking circumstances amid a horrifying situation.
The success of the first film snowballed into a sequel, appropriately titled "A Quiet Place Part II," which continues the family's journey while also granting us flashbacks to how the aliens descended on Earth and wreaked absolute havoc. But how did it all start, and what was it like to experience day one of this horror for anyone other than the Abbotts? The answer lies in the first official trailer for "A Quiet Place: Day One," which dramatizes the events by offering distinct perspectives within a familiar story.

The trailer for “A Quiet Place: Day One” has been released, marking the latest installment in the post-apocalyptic horror franchise spawned from 2018’s “A Quiet Place.”
As the title suggests, the film will explore the beginning of the invasion in which deadly alien creatures with hyper-sonic hearing arrive on Earth.
The original film and its direct follow-up were helmed by “The Office” and “Jack Ryan” alum John Krasinski, but Michael Sarnoski directs the upcoming third installment. The first two films focused on the survival of the Abbott family, consisting of Krasinski and his real-life wife Emily Blunt as Lee and Evelyn, who do everything they can to protect their children, Regan (Millicent Simmonds) and Marcus (Noah Jupe).
“A Quiet Place Part II’s” cold open showed Lee and the rest of the Abbott family navigating the chaos of the first day of the invasion in their quaint suburban town. The prequel “Day One,...

The sci-fi horror A Quiet Place franchise is heading to New York with its latest entry, A Quiet Place: Day One, which is set to reach theatres on June 28th – but cast member Alex Wolff (Hereditary) doesn’t think the film should be categorized as a sci-fi horror movie. During a red carpet chat with Discussing Film, Wolff said A Quiet Place: Day One is more like an expensive drama.
Wolff told Discussing Film, “That’s not a horror movie, not really. I might get in trouble for saying that. It’s the director of Pig, this film I did, so it’s very… it’s more a drama. It’s weird going from a two million dollar movie (Pig) to, like, a hundred million dollar movie (A Quiet Place: Day One), though, and working in the same proximity, there’s only about four or five characters in it. Yesterday, we shared some quotes from director Zack Snyder and co-writer Kurt Johnstad where they gave some information on what will be seen in the extended cut of Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire (read our review of the PG-13 cut Here), which will be released through the Netflix streaming service sometime after Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver reaches the service on April 19th. Speaking of Rebel Moon: Part Two, Johnstad also told The Hollywood Reporter what can be expected from that film: “a nonstop action rollercoaster ride of twists and turns.”
When asked how the second half of the story compares to the first, the co-writer answered, “I would say that it’s definitely its own movie, and it’s a very different movie. It’s not an assembly of the team. The team is built, and now it’s why they fight. I think [the PG-13 cut] is two hours,...

Leave the World Behind, Sam Esmail’s latest movie has managed to stir the pot right after it was dropped on Netflix. The star-studded cast, the tension-filled build-up laced with ample social commentary, the dry humor, and most importantly, the very cheeky, ambiguous ending have made Leave the World Behind an instant genre classic. Not everyone is too happy about the movie getting this much praise, even after not really bringing anything strikingly original to the table, but the overall response has been pretty positive. If you’ve liked watching Leave the World Behind and are now in search of similar kinds of movies, then here’s a list that’s going to come in handy for you.

Gary Dauberman had a good thing going at Warner Bros. for several years. He worked on the screenplays for the company’s two-part adaptation of Stephen King’s novel It, scripted the Conjuring Universe films Annabelle, Annabelle: Creation, and The Nun, co-created the 2019 Swamp Thing TV show, and wrote and directed Annabelle Comes Home. But then he wrote and directed an adaptation of Stephen King’s novel Salem’s Lot for the company… and two years after principal photography wrapped, they still haven’t figured out what they want to do with his Salem’s Lot. So it’s no surprise that Dauberman is now set up at a different company. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Dauberman has signed a first-look deal with Sony’s Screen Gems for feature films. He is expected to “create projects for himself while curating a slate featuring established and up-and-coming filmmakers.”

Halloweekend saw a huge horror hit, in fact the biggest opening for this weekend ever, and many movie writers and critics felt older than usual with that movie’s jaw-dropping success among the youth. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Universal and Blumhouse had been developing a movie based on Scott Cawthorn‘s popular video game series, “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” for quite some time, and it was finally released this weekend into 3,675 theaters. Starring Josh Hutcherson (“The Hunger Games”), reviews were harsh, as it only received 25% on RottenTomatoes, but this was always to be expected based on the younger age range of fans of the games and books.
After making a whopping $10.3 million from Thursday previews – more than the $7.7 million made by David Gordon Green‘s “Halloween” reboot in 2018 – the PG-13 rated “Freddy’s” brought in $39.5 million on Friday (including previews). That was more than 2019’s “Joker,...

One cut will be something “anyone can enjoy and watch”, while the director’s cut will be a more explicit version that will allow fans to take “a deeper, harder dive” into the material. He has even said that the director’s cut of Rebel Moon Part One: A Child of Fire has “close to an hour of extra content”… and now Netflix’s Tudum site has posted the runtime for the regular cut of the film. It’s 2 hours and 13 minutes. So it looks like the director’s cut will boost it up to around the 3 hour mark.

The past two weekends have been rough for theaters, as the riches of “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” have worn off and overall grosses have fallen to levels not seen since mid-February. Fortunately, a trio of new genre films are here to bring some business back.
The threesome in question are Lionsgate’s “Saw X,” a back-to-basics approach to the gory horror franchise that defined the genre in the 2000s; Paramount’s preschooler family film “Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie,” the latest offering from the Nick Jr. series that has become a merchandising titan; and Disney/20th Century’s “The Creator,” an original sci-fi film from “Rogue One” director Gareth Edwards.
Trackers don’t have a consensus on whether “Saw X” or “Paw Patrol 2” will be the No. 1 film. Distribution sources have told TheWrap that projections for “Saw X” have ranged as low as $15 million and as high as $25 million, while projections...

Update: As we previously told you, Paramount EVP Ashley Brucks has landed the top job at Screen Gems.
She starts Nov. 13.
Here’s the note from Sony Pictures’ Motion Picture Group Presidents, Josh Greenstein and Sanford Panitch.
Dear colleagues,
While the trades were premature in reporting this, we are excited to let you know that starting November 13, Ashley Brucks will join the Motion Picture Group as President, Screen Gems, guiding production for our genre label.
Ashley has overseen some of the most successful genre films in recent years. She most recently served as Senior EVP and Head of Development at Paramount Players. Over her nearly 15-year tenure at Paramount, she brought in the original Paranormal Activity and went on to oversee all seven installments in the nearly billion-dollar franchise. Ashley also oversaw the critically acclaimed box office hits A Quiet Place and A Quiet Place Part II, along with Scream and Scream VI,...

Screen Gems has a new leader.
Ashley Brucks has been named president of the Sony film division, best known for its lower-budgeted genre and comedy fare.
The exec, coming in from Paramount where she served as an exec vp at studio label Paramount Players, steps into the shoes worn by Steve Bersch, who stepped down last week and retired after a 16-year stint at Sony Pictures Entertainment.
Bersch oversaw several divisions, including faith-based Affirm Film, Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions and Screen Gems. Brucks, who begins her post Nov. 13, will only lead the latter and will report to motion picture group president Josh Greenstein and Sanford Panitch. (Affirm will continue to be run by Rich Peluso and Spwa will still be headed by Joe Matukewicz. Instead of reporting into Bersch, the pair will now report into Greenstein and Panitch.)
Brucks is coming in with plenty of genre experience. The 15-year Paramount...
