Generally Light Hearted Movie
Kigundu18 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The theme and the story of the movie stands out more than the actors and characters themselves. It is a movie that weaves in a solid emphasis on the importance of girl child education without being overly preachy. Its a fun, popcorn, lighthearted movie and you leave the cinema understanding just a little bit better the importance of people being educated particular girls.

For a movie that places such an emphasis on empowering girls, it is very odd that one of the main recurring characters in the film, Zainab, Sadiq's love interest is more or less MUTE throughout the movie. She doesn't say a single word and simply resorts to childlike coy glances and fluttering of eyelashes throughout her multiple appearances in the film. She is extremely docile and is portrayed as someone who is married off by who her father decides is best for her rather than her own personal choice. Her father is the one that decides Sadiq is a better suitor for her. She is given no opinion and even the teenage Aisha seems to have more spunk and fire than her. Zainab is portrayed as coming from a well to do family, and as someone who grew up in the North, currently lives in the North, I know that as of 2018, northern women from rich or upper middle class homes have more of a voice, choice or say in their daily lives and partners, from that aspect the film fed into a negative stereotype in a lazy manner and the producers missed an opportunity to tell a more nuanced and richer portrayal of northern women. Zainab could have been more fleshed out rather than being a pretty prop.

The music in the film is just right and does a great job in boosting the scenes. you almost don't want the scene to end because of the music. One of the first Nigerian films that had me looking out for the soundtrack details. The cinematography matches the film, its colorful and bright and the props and costumes were all of a good quality. Some nice tourism shots.

What happened to Bassey's initial girlfriend and Tony? Where they necessary? didn't add or take anything from the movie....The continuous social media aspect also diltued the film for me....

The characters are mostly forgettable..there wasn't much meat to work with..nothing quite memorable. Overall, its quite a fair effort, but one of those movies you watch on a free afternoon, smile but soon forget...

A touristic trip to Bauchi!
ngandacinema3 September 2023
Up North was such a delight, it was like a touristic trip of Bauchi😎

The film could have just been elevated with more solid acting and script. But overall, it was a feel-good watch

DELICIOUS

-Not many stories are shot in the North so it was a nice change to appreciate the Bauchi scenery. The cinematographers gave us a good slice of the city making us want to visit, for sure.

-Many thanks to the location managers for scouting such breathtaking areas like the animal parks, the canyons, and the festivals

-Up North sent a gentle message (without being preachy) concerning the need for girls to practice sports rather than consider it a taboo

-The score was awesome. That 'Gargajiya' song by Classiq was funky and full of vibes

BLAND

-Banky W and the rest of his cast played it safe. They were basically just repeating their lines without actually getting into the spirit of their characters

-The screenplay, sadly, did not have a powerful climax. Matter of fact, we could map out the end from the beginning

-Crisp sound engineering and more fluid editing were sadly missing...

Performed like a very clean Disney story. Limp and vacuous.

The best Nigerian Movie in decades
osimasuroland17 December 2019
Honestly, this movie brought back great memories and gave me deep thoughts. This is the best movie out of Nigeria in more than a decade. This compares to old Nigerian movie classics. Kudos to Banky W, this man is pure class. I do not watch Nigerian movies because of the "garbage" most churn out, but this move right here deserves an Oscar.

Absolute 10/10

This movie will englighten you

As a Nigerian I know we have three major tribes: Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba. However, you don't hear the mention of Hausa in places like America. This is so sad because the Hausa tribe is the largest tribe in land mass and population in Nigeria. It's as if apart from the presidency, they have nothing left to offer, like they are meaningless to the country. Hausa's are termed the poorest-illiterates in the country. You hardly see or hear them in entertainment so the world isn't aware they even exist. This movie just resurfaced them, the music especially during the festival, was amazing I had to use Shazam, I wish they will make more movies like this. The Hausa tribe needs to be heard!
