Nikolaj..... Why?
nickpedersen28 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This movie could have been really exciting. What if they kept the bodies in a coma for human spareparts? What if there were a sinister purpose with "helping" people to die? But..... Instead the producer tried to make it artsy and intellectual! Its a long boring tale that gets nowhere... There is no point... There is no purpose... Two scenes are good though...... The two attempted suicide scenes with Nikolaj :D

Slowburning portrait of a man's end of life...
imseeg18 February 2022
Kinda claustrophobic, mesmirizing start, but later on this movie looses some of it's mystery and with it some of it's spark.

The story is in essence quite dark and depressing, because we see how a man is slowly loosing grip on life after he has been diagnosed with a terminal disease.

However depressing in nature the subject of this story about dying might be, it is photographed in a tranquil, peaceful way and the acting is true to life and touching to watch.

Not for those who want to see a cheery picture, but for those who can stumach a true slowburning drama about how to deal with knowing that you are about to die soon...

Life is like this

Objectively speaking, this movie reminds us the moment when it goes to the end how will that be. It's depressing when watch this and the mysterious parts not really the highlights. Be grateful having healthy body seems what the movie try to express more.

Pointless

How can anyone with a huge number of production people, finance, actors and script writers etc make such an utterly pointless movie? Every now and then I was really hoping that a particular scene was going to lead to something or somewhere interesting but no, nothing. However, I was stupid enough to carry on regardless and hung around until the completely inconsequential finale - fool me once and just keep doing it and I'll bite obviously!

Boring
halfxbreed2314 August 2021
Woefully slow. The movie doesn't really get going until the last 30 minutes or so and to call it a slow butn would be disingenuous because the fuse isn't lit until the 3rd act. This movie suffers like so many before it that try to be poignant but end up being self indulgent and BORING. A movie should make you think, so should a articulate lecture. However, a movie, unlike a lectur, should be entertaining.

welcome to the Hotel Aurora
ferguson-611 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Greetings again from the darkness. Euthanasia, 'Dignity in Death' or assisted suicide. Whatever you prefer to call it, those against the idea have likely never been in the situation where medical treatment provides no hope. Max Isaksen (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, "Game of Thrones") is an Insurance Investigator. After his most recent scan, the doctor informs him that his brain tumor is growing and surgery is not an option. His bodily functions will slowly and mercilessly dissolve until death takes him.

Max is a non-descript kind of guy. The usually dashing Coster-Waldau is hidden behind old style wire-rimmed glasses and a mustache. He's happily married, but can't bring himself to tell his lovely wife Laerke (Tuva Novotny, ANNIHILATION, 2018) about the tumor or his inner thoughts. He's frustrated that the special diet and app monitor didn't 'save' him, so now he's suffering with speech issues, headaches, and other ailments that serve as a reminder of the ultimate outcome.

While working with one of his clients, Max learns about the choice her husband made - Hotel Aurora, which promises "a beautiful ending." It's an enterprise that excels in secrecy and efficiency. Their sales pitch is an end to life that fulfills your fantasy. Just know that once you execute the agreement, there is no changing your mind. Instead, you are immediately given a sedative and put on a private plane where you are whisked away to the Danish-modern hotel in a remote, stunning setting. Support work is provided by Kate Ashfield (SHAUN OF THE DEAD, 2004) as the fake mother, and Jan Bijovet as Frank, the director of Aurora.

Denmark-born director Jonas Alexander Arnby and writer Rasmus Birch worked together on WHEN ANIMALS DREAM (2014) and here they explore an existential question about life and death, and whose choice it is. There is also the question of saying goodbye to loved ones and choosing the terms at the end. It's a somber story that twists reality and dreams, and we can't help but find some similarities to Yorgos Lanthimos' THE LOBSTER (2015), although that one was infinitely more bizarre. There are a couple of moments of levity - such as asking for tips on tying a noose, and we do learn that Poppy Tea tastes best with lemon. Speaking of beverages, I lost count at the number of scenes featuring wine, juice, water or some other ingestible liquid. Sometimes it's a bonding experiencing with a toast, while other times, it's a biological need. Whatever the reason, taking a sip is somehow tied into the circle of life. As The Eagles sang in "Hotel California", 'you can check out any time you like, but you can never leave." Welcome to the Aurora, where we never have to ask, 'how was your stay?'

Misunderstood Riddle od Death --- 10 * out of 10
velvet_zoo4 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I was amazed that this work of cinematic art has received so little attention. It might be the subject - terminal cancer - which is not a prime suspect for easily entertaining a crowd as any realistic confrontation with death tends to be depressing. However I did not find this film depressing. It might also be that films with surreal elements have a hard time with audiences that expect all things to be at face value, without riddles or elements that are not spelled out completely and leave room for the viewer's imagination. Personally I loved the mixture of subdued thriller and Eastern European type surrealism in a scifi setting of films like Ex Machina.

The main character finds himself in a maze of conflicting feelings and impressions leading to something that could be very possibly his death. He achieves this by going to a hotel that claims to make death as pleasant as possible, with everything happening according to your individual wish. For the dramatic room neighbor of the protagonist this is a very dramatic death. For the main character it is a surreal get together with his wife that resolves open issues. The depiction of dying in this movie was creative and beautiful in a very original way.

Slow, depressing, dark and surreal.

Don't watch this if you are feeling maudlin.

What is reality, what is not?

A bit like Bobby's dream!

Death is cold as ice.
ulicknormanowen8 November 2021
In 1981,in "whose life is it anyway? " ,Richard Dreyfuss ,paralysed after a car crash ,asked for the right to die :as he was in a hospital ,it was not easy .

In Europa, some movies about assisted suicide were made in France ("quelques heures de Printemps" )and in Germany (und Morgen Mittag ,bin ich tot" ) but as it is illegal in both countries, death took place in Switzerland .Hollywood did not want to be outdone by Europa and thus produced "blackbird" ,which, although featuring Susan Sarandon as the strong lead, the movie verged on soap opera.

"Selvmordsturisten" is the most ambitious of the lot ,but is it the best for all that? I have my doubts .Euthanasia is a grave concern which involves all of us ,and someone who tells he will never resort to it is, either a saint ,or a liar.

Whereas the other movies dealing with the subject were given realistic treatments, linear narration , "selvmordsturisten " is much less accessible ,and might put off some viewers ;the lead gives a restrained but effective performance ;the cinematography is brilliant ,particularly in the mountain ; the Aurora (the name of which is rather wry ,for Aurora means more dusk than dawn) is a spooky place : its futuristic look is close to sci-fi ,and its rules are ruthless. Why English is used there whereas outside the first language remains is curious: is it because the place is international , euthanasia being illegal in the great majority of the world, so many "clients " come from other countries ?:this is not specified ; people about to commit assisted suicide would rather talk in their first language. This is a place ,unlike the German and French efforts you are not supposed to change your mind

That said, the movie is off the beaten track ,and one feels the unfortunate hero's fear and misgivings, his escape in the icy areas becomes a transparent metaphor : you will never run as fast as time and death will find you wherever you are.

If cinema is art, this movie is a masterpiece!
ceyhuncanbazoglu23 March 2021
This film blesses the art of cinema with script, editing, cinematography, carefully selected plans, reasonable musical accompaniment, no chattering lines, and great actings. Film's poetic narrative allowing to make completely different inferences by recalling the viewer memory in every different plan, whose location is changed in fiction. For a long time I have not witnessed such a qualified and well-designed storytelling. Spectacular!

Clearly not for everyone, but certainly relevant for some.
baunacholi-8615921 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This is not mass market material and it does not have to, in order to tell a profound and captivating story. Loved the cinematography, nature / setting...it seems just out of this world and reminded me of the later alien movies - Mysterious and hauntingly beautiful. Nothing wrong with the narrative, slow indeed, but it's about suicide, feeling lost and dealing with your last days alive - so what's to rush? This said, a bit more streamlined and less dream sequences would have helped. Ps: Original score.

I thought this movie was amazing but depressing !
justind-7020420 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Very interesting topic that's for sure, imagine having a terminal illness and wanting to end on your own terms. Everyone should have that right, but no, most places in the world do not allow you to finish your own life. This movie poses a unique possibility to go to an amazing place and have your fantasies come true and end on your own terms, But you better not change your mind, or they will hunt you with a sniper rifle!!!! I saw similarities to The Lobster in a lot of ways, although the different time periods in the film seem thrown together and you sometimes don't know what's going on. It was still a really interesting ride though, and makes you think about life, death and terminal illness, depressing, but real,

A shot of depresso
ricky_dry_county3 November 2020
1) Does anything happen? We don't know! 2) Depression turned to 11 3) Loads of close up poker face shots of Mr. Lannister with nothing happening. 4) Shutter Island/A Cure for Wellness vibes but certainly inferior overall. 5) Cinematography is quite spectacular.

It's not that this isn't a well made movie,,,
doug_hile29 December 2023
,,, it's just that it is sooo slow. It's an expansion on what Sol goes through in his last moments of life, when he decides to check out, in Soylent Green, with a dash of Carousel and wanting more life, like the runners in Logans' Run,,, and a dash of Roy Batty from Blade Runner added into the script. Yep, his brain tumor might explain some of the more disturbing occurences and you have to question what version of reality is transpiring. It IS disturbing to think that this might be the way our lives end up. We all want to die peacefully in out sleep with out boots on, but, we can see right now that this will not be the case for many people. This film is going to make a lot more people think about that possibility.
