Engaging, low-key relationship dramedy
ozolsx-imdb24 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This is an amusing and engaging story of two semi-successful, creative millennials, who meet by chance on the way to celebrate the summer solstice. He's an actor in a local TV serial wondering if it will be renewed for another season, dreaming of Hollywood, and in the process of getting divorced. She's a children's book illustrator turning down a contract due to lack of creative control, and single. The story progresses through three consecutive Midsummer celebrations, which bring the pair into contact with oddball characters and old flames. It's not clear how much of an ongoing relationship they share during the year between each of the encounters shown in the film. They get to know each other better, and they express their hopes and frustrations with themselves, their exes, and each other. By the end of the film, he's more ready for a commitment than she is.

There were a few laugh-out-loud moments and many smiles and snickers. We saw it in Latvian, and I don't know if there is a sub-tiled version available. There is language-specific humor, such as puns, and cultural references that may be lost on non-Latvians. We enjoyed it very much.

I noticed none of the technical gaffes the previous reviewer mentioned. There was nothing in this film that distracted me from the story as it was presented. The movie did very well what it set out to do. Nothing spectacular or exceptional happens, but you get to know and empathize with both the two main characters, warts and all.

Romance in Latvia

This was a gem. The film remained true to its origins including traditional Latvian celebrations and focused on a generation that didn't learn Russian. The storyline was set over three years so you could see the evolution of the relationship of the main characters. It was funny in moments with some cynical lines spoken by the female lead. What was novel was that the female lead was more experienced in love than the male.

Not as yellow as the poster looks

There are no ups and downs to this movie. It's kind of a contemplation on a subject of getting older and having relationships at the same time. Do people change, do their values transform? Some humour goes along with it. And a poor delivery of sound with numerous f-ups by the soundman. Overall, considering it's a low budget movie made in Latvia, I'd say it's pretty good. But on an international level I'd give it a solid five out of ten. The drama lacked spice to me.
