A new Idea
9 March 2000
This is a movie I think you have to see, even if you don't like Bruce Willis, The movie is not marvelous but it represents a new idea, an idea that challenges you to discover it before it's unleashed. Please if you intend to see this movie, don't let any-one talk to you about it, for if it was spoilt then it means nothing if you watch it or not.

Ronin (1998)
8/10
A movie you should see.
17 February 1999
Well, this movie is a real hit, a film that you will not regret watching. Ronin is a great action movie, the chase scenes, the shooter scenes, and the tactical aspect of the story is a very fine piece of art. The film is different from other action movies, as it throws light on the life of the agents, who were very, very fine group of actors, headed of course by Robert De Niro, who played a great role; his naturalness, simplicity, humour, and professionalism added a lot to the film.

De Niro played the character of the professional agent so simply and so cleverly that you felt he is doing his daily household work! Jean Reno also fascinated me by his sweet way of acting, adding a new perspective for an agent's job and for the movie's story.

The plot was cleverly drawn, nothing extraordinary, or supernatural. It all seems as if the film retells a real story, with the events happening neither too fast nor too slow, but just at the correct rate. Even when new surprises appear on the surface, you don't feel any interruption. The film's theme, is however, the most charming point, by telling the story of the Samuri and the Ronin, it added an atmosphere of charm and vagueness to the film.

The end of the film, though some may disagree with me, is an excellent one (no spoilers). The only disadvantages of the film are the excessively long car chase scenes, with the commercial like spirit. If you didn't watch this film, go and watch it.

Destiny (1997)
9/10
A masterpiece of the modern Egyptian movie making
24 January 1999
The movie is simply great. So beautiful, so entertaining, so well-made. As beautiful as I had expected from yousef shaheen, the director, as a leader of the modern Egyptian movie making. The ideal declared by the film is a throbbing hot one. Liberal thought and freedom from all pre-made and superimposed thought is a subject that I never saw treated in such an open manner, especially in a conservative society like the Egyptian one. The Camera playing, the lighting modules, the music, the positioning of the right song in the right situation are all points that count on the director's side. The scene where the Khaleefa says: "I'm the Andalus" with him being zoomed out to appear dotted in the centre of the screen, is one scene that I don't think will forget. The actors choice was also very successful. If you have never seen an Egyptian film before, this is a good one to start with.

The Game (1997)
9/10
The game certainly started; no one knows how it would end.
22 December 1998
The game, I must say is one of the best movies I have seen that year. It' s another masterpiece by Micheal Douglas. The film has a very high cinematic language. The story is great and treated in the most perfect way by the director of the film. The film appears at first to be a normal action movie, in which the rich Van Orton, chases the bad guys, who by the most original way washed him off all his money. Even this way it could have been a good movie, but a traditional one. Yet the writer had more tricks in his pocket. I don't want to spoil the plot, so I won't mention further details. But I must say that the event sequence cleared up to be most unexpected and most beautiful. The film is different because it turned into having no bad guys at all as appears in the end, this in itself is pure beauty as your mind doesn't contaminate with real violence and blood that fill most (almost all) of the action movies. If you like Micheal Douglas then this is certainly your movie, for he almost plays solo here; all other characters are (not marginal) but complementary to his role; However, It's his life and his game. The director of the movie is the same director of "Seven", another of my favorites. The film has nothing common with "seven" except the great cinematic language, the quick paced actions, the unexpected events, especially the end. That end is the most suitable for the film, any other end would have changed the whole idea behind the story; It wouldn't have been "a game" any more. Take my advice, watch that film (If you haven't yet), and don't let any one tell you its story before you watch it! I give the film 8/10.
