Rose Red (2002)

Started great and ended with a long hard boring flop
20 June 2002
Well, I was wondering why it took so very long to get 5 votes posted here on the IMDB. And I certainly understand now! "Rose Red' was the color of all our eyes, here at my house, after well over a 4 hour watch. I now wonder if most people never had the patience to make it to the end of this movie! So.... they never got to the vote. Or... They were so exhausted after the longggggg drawn out last hour(that felt longer than the first 3 hours), that they were too tired to vote! Seriously! It took me 2 days to get in my vote and I really didn't want to even write any comments, but I felt obligated to warn y'all that this will be a very hard and long watch. I love Stephen King. But this movie is not even worthy of being called his worst. It's all been done, by him, before. The beginning showed really great hope... and then the characters "whined" their way to pure disgusting boredom. If I was Stephen King I would have "Alan Smithee'd" this movie!

1st Class Action/Mystery/Suspenseful Thriller
13 June 2002
I saw this at a pre-screening this evening with quite an audience. This movie moves Matt Damon up to the big league. He gave a great performance that had the entire theater jumping from surprise "events" and applauding many scenes before the movie even ended. And rather than repeat many names already mentioned in other comments I would like to say everyone did a great job with their parts. And what a great choice of Franka Potente as his lady "on the run" with him. (Remember her great movie "Run Lola Run?) One of the things I liked best was the incredible sound track and score as well as excellent photography to match the events. Everyone in my group loved the movie and many of us can hardly wait to get the DVD version for our home theaters. This will be a must own movie for my collection. 9 out of 10. Go see this one for sure!

We All Laughed Out Loud
1 November 2001
It sure is a great experience when your whole family can laugh out loud. This movie has that ability. Rob Schneider is great in this movie. This movie is "old fashioned" funny. Not obscene, clean language and simple fun. Rent it for some great smiles. But I think what amazed me the most was the surprise of the acting ability of Survivor's Colleen Haskell. We all kept commenting we had seen her before but couldn't place it. Because she was never in a movie before... she was a Survivor contestant! She is extremely charismatic and pretty. And there was a great chemistry between her and Rob. She has the natural magic to be a great star and I hope she makes it! The DVD interview tells this story and all the crew loved her. Go Colleen!

Laugh Out Loud Funny, I'm Throwing Away my Prozac
22 June 2001
I have been depressed lately and it has been hard to smile. This movie had me and my entire family laughing out loud. What a joy to see they can still really make a clean non vulgar....fun movie! George Clooney, I forgive you for making The Perfect Storm. And John Turturro, I love those teeth too! (See the DVD featurette for this comment) And Tim Blake Nelson, you are my new idol. I'm throwing away my Prozac.

A Haunting 'Sleeper' Hit of the Year
28 April 2001
I'm still holding my breath from this outstanding thriller!! What a fantanstic job Brian Katkin did in this sleeper hit. I can't rememeber how long it has been since a movie scared me. This one gets your attention from the start and never lets up. I actually considered turning it off about half way through because I was that horrified. I wasn't sure if I could take much more of the terror! I certainly was glad that I didn't. Katkin shows that a great scare can still be done without expensive "tricks" of computer effects. This is just a well done, good old fashion journey into fear. It is directed as good as the best of the best thrillers!

What helps make this so believable is this a crime that could happen to any of us at any time! I don't want to ruin anything by revealing the story. Just lock your windows and doors and allow yourself to let the movie take you for a ride. You'll be rewarded with a adrenaline pumping thrill as good as anything I have ever experienced. And I have to mention that Stephanie Jones was incredible. She does a 10 plus job of acting. She allows us to feel the horror she feels through the entire film. Also, the camera work was some of the best I've seen in this genre. It captures the fear perfectly, constanting taking us to the edge.

If you like a good scare, don't miss this one.

Ruined By Chris Rock
4 April 2001
I love Renee, Morgan Freeman and Greg Kinear. But I really hope they make wiser decisions in participating in a movie with vile creatures like Chris Rock. I have nothing against black comedians you use language and demeaning, degrading remarks as there only way to get a laugh. But Chris Rock has ruined many potentially good movies because he is just an obnoxious punk. Richard Pryor was great, as was Red Fox or Eddie Murphy and so many others. But whoever decided that Chris Rock is funny must be ill. He can't play a part without useing severely foul and offensive language. I am no angel and swear myself, but I have enough respect for others not to degrade people for laughs by calling them names likes cu*ts, etc. etc. And I am speaking out to tell "Hollywood" there are hundreds of really funny comedians that don't need obscenity to get us to laugh! I hope others users speak out and follow my sentiments. This movie is ok but ruined by Chris Rock. I'd give it a zero if it was an option.

Not Worth a Nickel!
16 March 2001
This movie was beyond disappointment. Well acted story that means nothing. The plot is ridiculous and even what story there is goes absolutely nowhere. It truly isn't worth a nickel, buffalo or otherwise..pun intended!

A Mesmerizing Vision, Stunning
8 March 2001
This film is a fantastic trip to a different world. The sets are absolutetly stunning. From the first frame of film we are catapulted into a superbly presented vision of an incredible mind. Very few movies contain such power. Comparative examples would be movies such as "Metropolis", Dark City, and perhaps the "Cirque Du Soleil" genre. The role casting was incredible with some of the most amazing shots of children possibly ever shot on film. The futuristic 'devices' used in the movie are fresh both in concept and simplicity. This film looks stunning and perfect on the new HD Televisions especially when viewed progressively! I place this movie on my top shelf as one of the best visonary experiencing I have ever seen. Kudos to all involved in the production of the movie from it's screenplay to the last clip of film to be edited. And the score is equally great. I hope someday the edited out scene of capturing a child's tear is put back in, perhaps on a new DVD release! And I certainly would like to see a sequel.

Great 50's Sci-Fi
24 February 2001
Reading other comments forced me to write my own. One commenter complains of it being a 50's Sci-Fi with no name actors. Well I saw this movie several times in the 50's. It was one of my favorites for sure. I think there are numerous, outstanding, Sci-Fi and Horror movies in the 50's and this is one of them. It had a Hitchcock feel with the shadows and suspense. And if you were a 10 or 12 year old when that movie came out you could really identify with the story. It played for years in the Saturday matinees. And no name actors? How about Ross Martin! We all loved him in the Twilight Zone and the Outer Limits. And of course he was great as Artemus Gordon in the Wild Wild West TV series. Heck check out his imdb credits. Anyhow now that I revealed my age I should mention that if you missed the 50's Sci-Fi while they were new releases you sure missed some fantastic fun. And it was those 50's Sci-Fi movies that motivated so many great talents to produce all the great ones that followed. I too hope this makes DVD.

A Boring and slowwww waste of time
11 February 2001
A total waste of time! I wish I would have stayed home and slept. This movie is boring and slow to the end. The music throughtout is as lifeless as the story. What a shame the "trilogy" chose to kill itself in the end. I wouldn't take my dog to see this movie. Don't waste any money on the rental when it makes it to video, which I'm sure will be soon...because if they don't get it to the rental stores fast they won't even get a shot at recovering some of their expenses via video from people who haven't heard how bad it is.

Much Much Better Than Expected
18 January 2001
I read all the bad reviews, avoided the movie at the theater because of them and now I'm disappointed that I didn't see it on the big screen. This is good Sci-Fi movie with a little of everything. The visuals were great, the special effects were well done and the sound-track was a 10. This movie plays with the best of the best on a good home theater system. Played progressively it was flawless and the room was filled with great dynamic, well steered surround. And it is loaded with lots of bass. A great sound track always enhances a good Sci-Fi movie. This movie is very watchable and enjoyable. It was not meant to be a hi-tech blowout of violence and stunt work. This movie was meant to be exactly what it is, a good Science Fiction story. It certainly was not the best one done, but it stands up with the greats. What a shame that so many people can't see that simple action can be fun. What a pleasure to get away from the violent stuff for a night! A strong 7 out of 10!

We All walked out on this One!!!
23 July 2000
I am 52 years old and have loved movies all my life. There have been only 3 movies I have went to see that were so terrible that I got up and left the theater without making it to the end. I saw it on opening night. When we left I said "stop" "I want to count heads." There were only 7 people left in a sold out show!! The next day I was so shocked at the comments and reviews that I went with a second group of people and tried to watch it again, hoping perhaps I just had an "off" day. It was worse the 2nd time. I have never seen such poor film work ever. Soon into the movie I assumed the film was "matted" wide-screen because I saw many scenes with the characters foreheads cut off at about the hairline. I was stunned when one of the big waves hit the boat and knocked the main boom over. I thought I was watching an old 60's Godzilla movie. And then as the perfect "tri-wave" storm begins pounding the boat the scene moves to the inside of the ship. The crew is anxiously deciding what to do. They are SLOWLY LEANING from side to side. And behind them, outside of the main windows are these 40 or 50 foot waves slamming down just feet from the ship. Nothing on the tables are moving etc. etc. This is not to mention that the scenes were too chaotic to really see what was going on. They also were shot in deep brownish hues that were far from natural. That's not even getting to the fact that there is never an attempt to develop any of the characters. And the acting was "B" movie horrific. When both my groups left, after about an hour or more, I made the comment that "I hope this boat crashes and takes everything with it, especially the film reels at the theater." I then recanted and said "I don't even care what happens to anybody in this movie." If you want to see a good movie on the perfect storm, watch the "White Squall" or "Wind". Don't even waste your money on renting the video. I love George Clooney, but not here. I also want to note that I was hoping that at a 2nd theater, the movie at would at least display a proper aspect ratio. "Maybe the first show had over-scanned the projection so as to cut off the tops and bottoms of scenes". I was wrong. It was just as terribly displayed there. It is either being played back in 35 MM, matted to give us the 2:35 to 1 appearance of 65 or 70MM. Or it is just a terrible Camera man's eye for the scope of the viewer. Boy, I am sorry I am so negative, but this movie was that bad. I have heard many other comments from people who completely agree with me. Simply, one of the worse movies we've seen. And I like almost all movies in some way or another. Except "The Perfect Storm"!

10++ out of 10: Stunning, Incredible!
22 July 2000
This circus act is simply incredible. There has never been anything done like it. It is fresh, unique and most of all it is stunning in it's presentation. The colors, the music, the pacing, the very gifted performers all add up to a breath taking event. My home was never so quiet, in awe, yet energized as we watched this spectacle. Comments such as "Unbelievable", "Wow", "I can't believe this!", "No one can possibly do that", and more, were repeatedly shouted out as we watched. This is much more than a film. It is alive with a spirit of it's own. You'll remember "Cirque du Soleil: Quidam" forever. This is a must see event. My family and I will travel far to catch this performance live....as will many others I'm sure.

An Incredible Sleeper (a.k.a. Hide and Seek )
27 May 2000
Wow! What a movie! It should have been a major release. It would have definitely drawn serious box office money. This is one of those great movies that hit you by surprise. Jennifer Tilly and Daryl Hannah are at their best. This thriller is of the Stephen King "Misery" genre. It had everyone watching it here on the edge of their seats to the end. I'll proudly show this to everyone I know! I rarely like to hype a movie to friends but I surely will this one.

I don't want to ruin any surprises or tell too much of the plot. Simply put, Helen (Jennifer Tilly) and Frank (Vincent Gallo) want a baby. And they kidnap Anne (Daryl Hannah) and stage her death so well that she isn't being looked for. If this sounds familiar, it's not. This movie holds it's own. I'll never forget it! And I'll be watching it again.

(It is titled "Hide and Seek" in USA.)

On My Top 10 Sleeper List
15 January 2000
I was never a Twisted Sister fan, so the thought of a Dee Snider film didn't excite me. However I was stunned by this movie. It contains all the elements necessary for an excellent Horror/Thriller. It is a Silence of the Lambs type of movie. It has an excellent sound score and is very well paced. Dee Snider has proven to me he can do it all. This is entirely his production. It presents a valuable lesson of what can happen when meeting the wrong type of internet chat friend. To sum it up, be sure you don't miss this movie. And if you get the DVD be sure to check out the commentary and the special features. You too will like Dee Snider more for it.
