Mephisto (1981)
7/10
Interesting film with fine ensemble playing
7 November 1999
This was a superbly acted and visually stimulating film.

The most interesting element for me was Hendrik's refusal to allow his conscience to interfere with his life's work as an actor. Being an actor, and more importantly an actor able to act in his mothertongue in his own land, is all to this man. Initially indifferent to the rise of the Nazis, unable to accept that their government will change his life, he follows them and befriends a high-ranked Nazi so that his "art" might continue. But it can never be as it was before. Yet he continues to do as he is told, to use the theatre as a propaganda medium, without questioning the consequences.

He cannot admit to himself that he has made the wrong decision and even when he is in Paris and is presented with another opportunity to escape the Nazi regime, he returns to Germany to the pursuit of his theatrical life, no matter how restricted it is.

Excellent film with a very good lead performance.

The Moderns (1988)
7/10
Very stylish interpretation of 1920s Paris
17 August 1999
This is a fairly enjoyable tale set in the art world of 1920s Paris. The look of the film and the mood it creates are the most important things; far more important than the enjoyable, yet slow-moving plotline.

It is highly imaginative and its representation of icons such as Ernest Hemingway and Gertrude Stein add an extra dimension to the film.

The only true weak points are some of the dialogues between the two leads; it is sometimes out of place and almost too 'modern'!

All the performances are good but John Lone and Keith Carradine are especially suited to their parts.

Mistress (1987 TV Movie)
6/10
Above average TV movie
11 August 1999
This was a surprisingly enjoyable TV movie with a good performance from the lead, Victoria Principal.

After her married lover of nine years dies, she is left with nothing, having no one to take care of her and no work prospects in her chosen field of acting.

During the next five months she struggles to find work, or another true love, meeting various new men and old flames along the way.

All this leads up to the bleaker-than-usual ending for a fictional TV movie. Enjoyable

Good film, shame about the awful, awful ending
6 August 1999
I am a huge fan of the first two Godfather films and give them both full marks however, this film suffers dreadfully from the unfortunate casting of Sofia Coppola as one of the principal characters.

The film is good on the whole, and Sofia Coppola's acting was bearable, if appalling, right up until that death scene. I am usually in tears at this sort of thing, but when Sofia Coppola turns to Al Pacino, says "Dad" and then collapses to the ground, I can not resist from laughing incredibly loudly. The scene would have been fine and very moving - Al Pacino was very effective and I could have cried at his emotion if I wasn't laughing so hard by that point - if another actress had been cast. This just ruined the whole film for me and although everything else about the film was generally very good, this hideous performance just mars the whole thing. I am unable to watch the film now and properly enjoy it as I am always waiting for the dreadful scene outside the opera. I can't emphasise enough how this scene completely overshadows the rest of the film. It is such a shame but then again who cares?

Pulp Fiction (1994)
6/10
Highly disturbing yet curiously enjoyable
21 July 1999
Well, I suppose that could be said about so many films but I feel that is the best way to sum up this film.

I don't believe all that is said about how it revolutionised film making or that it is the most important film of the (my) generation (and I did see it in the cinema at the time of it's release).

There are many superb scenes in the film but for me, it is neither as exceptional nor shocking as Reservoir Dogs.

I suppose this generation is pretty unshockable as far as what is seen on screen is concerned, although this film does have a couple of moments that almost truly shock.

So long as you're over 18 and mentally sound then I recommend it but really, it is only a film after all, if it's a statement of our times, it is only one man's statement (to which of course he's perfectly entitled).

Caroline? (1990 TV Movie)
4/10
Average film with an unnecessary tag on ending
21 July 1999
This film was fairly enjoyable for a piece of mid-afternoon entertainment.

I was drawn in to the story mostly by the two young children and the performance of Pamela Reed as their mother. However, it was almost as though this film couldn't decide if it was about the is she / isn't she story surrounding Caroline, the plight of the poor little rich kids, or the relationships between the adult characters. It was disappointing that none of these subjects was fully explored in the film.

Although the outcome of the is she / isn't she part of the story was painfully obvious from the outset, I was surprised but disappointed by the rushed ending and the inconsistencies in Caroline's character.

Anyway, it would be ridiculous to sit and over analyse a minor TV movie such as this (or any film for that matter), so I'll just finish by saying that it's worth watching if you're a fan of TV movies or films where children are the main focal point.

Two Evil Eyes (1990)

Horrific good fun by all accounts
17 July 1999
This is a fairly standard modern remake of a couple of Edgar Allan Poe stories previously made by Roger Corman.

As remakes go, the two stories are still done the justice a Poe story deserves.

At times, of course, the film is needlessly gory but there are flashes of genius particularly with Argento behind the camera.

On the whole, it is a reasonable horror to watch once or twice but it's only really a slice above typical TV horror fare of the nineties' and definitely a cut below a Roger Corman film.

It really isn't that bad.
16 July 1999
This movie really isn't that bad! I know it bombed severely at the box office but on video it's definitely worth a go.

Although I enjoy this film - I'm not saying it's great by any stretch of the imagination - there are some severely dire moments. Particularly poor are some of the special effects, but on the whole they're not bad for the early eighties.

Richard Jordan wasn't miscast at all, I feel that he and Jason Robards did incredibly good acting on this film (as always) and even Anne Archer isn't as annoying as she became later on in her career.

Anyway, it really isn't as bad as all they other comments on this page would have you believe, so if you haven't seen it give it a go.

Hilarious and true to life
15 July 1999
As always, Neil Simon's work is hilarious and true to life.

The best stories for me were the ones involving Alan Alda and Jane Fonda as a divorced couple coming to an agreement over their daughter (the late Dana Plato) and, Maggie Smith as an English actress and Michael Caine as her husband.

The scenes featuring Walter Matthau and Elaine May and the story revolving around Richard Pryor's and Bill Cosby's characters have more of a slapstick element to them.

Isn't It Shocking? (1973 TV Movie)
8/10
Excellent TV movie
8 July 1999
This is a great TV movie with a good story and many comic moments thanks to the excellent cast.

The only problem this movie has is that it hasn't stood the test of time as well as it might have.

Despite this, it's definitely worth viewing, particularly if you are an Alan Alda or Ruth Gordon fan.

Tommy (1975)

This is actually quite an intriguing "alternative" musical.
13 April 1999
This film is definitely worth a viewing should the opportunity arise. You don't have to be a huge fan of the Who to enjoy the story or the music. In fact, it's worth watching just to hear Jack Nicholson singing!

Ann Margaret deserved her Golden Globe for her excellent performance and, all of the other cast members are very good in their roles.

There's lots of Ken Russell symbolism, such as the use of colour and the recurring plane / cross / silverball motifs.

The music is very good and there are some humorous as well as bleak moments in this film.

Excellent TV movie

One of the better TV movies to come out of America in the early 1990s. Veronica Hamel is superb, as ever and, Judd Hirsch is effectively cast against type. Definitely worth a viewing when the opportunity arises.

Interesting yet disturbing film
2 March 1999
I was intrigued by this French film, not least because of its unexpected climax.

The performances are more than competent but not outstanding, although Jacqueline Bisset and Isabelle Huppert stand out.

There are many interesting social comments within the film and it leaves the viewer with a sense of unease at the open-ended questions it poses.

St. Elsewhere (1982–1988)
Fantastic medical drama
1 March 1999
I remember watching and enjoying immensely this medical series in the 1980s and I am still impressed by it when I catch the repeats on Channel 4. With the possible exception of Chicago Hope, it is the best medical series to come out of America.
