The American President (1995)
Really lovely romance...
As a romance film buff, I would have to put 'The American President' in my top three favourites. It is just a lovely film, underrated in cinemas and not pounded on video release. It's quiet, realistic (the personalities, not the situation) and it has the twist of the presidency in order to give it a bit of extra bite. It is sensitively written, encompasses a large supporting cast with out isolating the main story. It comments not only on romance but the state of politics and society, whilst remaining easy to watch and follow. All in all its a great film, even if it hasn't got the big A list hitters starring in it.
The Sixth Sense (1999)
Will blow your mind
Not my general taste - I had to be persuaded to watch it with the promise that I would be walked to my door to scare off ghoulies - but it is an instant classic. Willis is excellent, and Osment it amazing!! There are loads of shocks right from the start, and despite a low SFX budget, the chills are there, even from steamy breath and disappearing hand prints. It loses nothing from repeat viewings (I've now seen it three times - you actually need to see it more than once to get all the nuances) and the twist at the end? Well, it's a zinger.
American Pie (1999)
Fab - great laugh with mates or cuddlefest for date
Okay - so I admit - it wasn't my first choice movie - I'd gone with a friend and missed the start time for the film we'd intended to see. But who cared? American Pie was great - I laughed all the way through. I'd gone in expecting to watch a toilet-humour fuelled attack of the teens and came out thinking I'd finally seen a film which managed to capture the brain function of my friends. It wasn't packed with big-breasted low brain-cell count girls, and the guys weren't of the all-American type. I laughed with my mates, and cried with my date. What more can you ask?
The Object of My Affection (1998)
Very sweet, if not exactly top class film making
Out of a group of girlfriends at an overnight rom-com fest, this was our top choice with other contenders being 'Notting Hill', 'You've Got Mail' and 'She's The One'. It wasn't exactly Oscar-worthy, and the plot line was a little unbelievable, but in all it was wonderfully cliched, with a sweet couple (or not-couple, depending on how you look at it) and was great with a few tubs of melting ice-cream, seven make-up bags, a pair of hair curlers and enough cuddly animals to sink a small ship.
One Fine Day (1996)
Nice rom-com, if not inspiring
With both Michelle Pfeiffer and George Clooney, how bad could it be? The plot line is nice - spanning a day in the life of two single parents with child-care problems. The result's fairly obvious, although I won't spoil the ending. This isn't a Casablanca, or a Gone With The Wind or any other classic movie, but it's a nice, sweet, well produced romance with enough about it to stop you being bored. Pfeiffer and Clooney have enough chemistry to seem realistic, and the children are very sweet. Buy a tub of ice-cream, turn the lights down and watch it in your PJs.
When Harry Met Sally... (1989)
Dated but greated...( and that's great, not grate)
Okay, so I'm a bit behind the times, but I didn't see this until quite recently - a couple of months ago, in fact. Until that time, all I knew was the fake-orgasm scene, which I must admit, is my least favourite out of the whole movie. Other than this, I think Ryan and Crystal work really well together, and the script is well written - enough so to allow the audience to really root for them. It doesn't rely on big explosions or car chases to entertain the audience, and the inserts of the different elderly couples telling the stories of how they met is really sweet and a great idea. I ties up well, leaving the viewer satisfied as to its conclusion but not taking it so far as to become boring. A classic, a trend setter, and a great film all round
Sleepless in Seattle (1993)
Fabulous Romantic Comedy - without a single kiss!!
One of my favourite movies of all time. Hanks and Ryan have a great chemistry, even though they only have a couple of scenes together. It treats the audiences as adults, without falling into any normal romance/comedy traps. Her boyfriend's a nice guy, not marrying her for the wrong reasons, and Hank's character isn't alone due to an evil ex-wife. The little boy is very cute, and one of the best child actors around. None of the cast let the side down. The supporting characters are great - Rosie O'Donnell has put in the best performance I've ever seen from her, and Bill Pullman is wonderfully understated as Annie's devoted but jilted boyfriend - he pulls a huge sympathy vote from me. A fantastic movie for a night in with a loved one - it is just sooo romantic, even though there isn't a single kiss between Hanks and Ryan. Men take note - take this video home from the rental store and she'll be yours for ever.
Fools Rush In (1997)
Great movie for a date
I love this film!! I'm a big Matthew Perry fan anyway, and I hired the film on this premise. However, I quickly fell in love with it. It was different from many of it's peers in the romantic comedy genre, as its story-line was very original. I enjoyed its multi-cultural themes and its homage to it's own filmatic heritage. As a Rom-com buff, I would put it very high on my favorites list, as the acting is good, the plot plausible and the production is effective. It's no Ingmar Bergman, but it holds its own in a medium dominated by no-brainer action films. Besides, an Ingmar Bergman film isn't what you watch for easy viewing!!! I like it so much, I even have it on video. (I'm just going to pop off and watch it again for good measure.)
