Solid acting. Based on its own a very good drama
22 March 2023
I can only assume the bad reviewes are based on some expectation of what the movie is not.

I tend to go into movies and just judge them for what they are, rather than judge them based on some imagined expectation.

That said the acting is solid in this. The pace is decent. It starts off more slowly and then picks up the pace throughout. The plot mechanics are indeed not overly difficult to figure out but it didn't ruin the movie for me. For me it added an intensity to wishing the son would realize the larger picture before things get out of hand. Something he does very well. I think my only complaint would be the ending. Slightly untidy in that it leaves you to your own assumptions to some extent.

A very solid 7. I would watch this again as well as recommend it. Good action, realistic roles and reactions. What I would expect of a good quality movie.

Excellent ride

I was pleasantly surprised at how good this movie is. The acting is top par and the action is almost non-stop. Zoey shines in this role as a female professional hit person, spurned on by revenge.

Great storyline as well. I missed this at the theater. Glad I found it.

Suicide Squad (2016)

Ignore the critics. You won't regret it
6 August 2016
I'm honestly a bit confused by all the Marvel vs. DC BS that seems to be trashing this movie. I'm not a particular fan of any particular comic. I don't own any comics. I just like good movies. I grew up with X-Men cartoons, and the Super Friends, Spiderman, Green Lantern. I could care less about some nerd rage about who's better. I just want some entertainment and Suicide Squad definitely delivered.

I wasn't sure what to expect, other than some cheeky behavior from Harley Quinn, and some nice visuals. What I got was a great summer ride.

Don't listen the hype and judge for yourself. Every one of these characters is fleshed out. I connected with each, although a few could have used a bit more back story. The visuals definitely didn't disappoint, and the action was non-stop once you got your ticket on the train ride. After the backstory was out of the way, it was game on.

The Joker was 'uncomfortable' to watch, which is saying something. The insanity shown there was truly believable. Harley Quinn excelled as a total wacko, jokester, bad ass, and general flirt. This was oddly probably one of the best renditions of the joker I've seen. Heath Ledger was a believable villain for being cold and critical and deadly in the batman flicks. This Joker is different for a different reason. I wasn't sure Jared was a good choice for this .I left the theater not doubting. The joker and Harley are insane and the in love. The joker is evil, and Harley will do whatever he asks. I great recipe for disaster ;).

Deadshot was awe inspiring, and still managed to be likable, and inhumanly human. Will Smith is the perfect mix of 'full of himself', 'a father', 'deadly', and 'plucky' at the same time. He and Harley Quinn had great chemistry on screen.

Enchantress was a surprise for me, largely hidden in the previews, and fantastic in it's delivery. They could spawn an entire new movie off of that alone.

El Diablo was fantastic as a thug turned spiritual initiate. His power is impressive. I only wish he had more on-screen time, because what they showed was jaw dropping. They should have spread that around a bit.

Overall, a solid 8 out of 10. You won't find much better for summer fare. This is one that will have lasting power beyond the summer as well. It will go into my favorites along with Guardians, The Man of Steel, Star Trek, and the Thor films. Great entertainment. Tell the critics to shove it or check their batteries...

Surprisingly good
21 March 2012
I was a bit surprised at how much I enjoyed this. I don't know if it's because i'm a bit older and remember the original, or it was just funny, but this was well worth the price of admission.

This one was a bit like a summer blockbuster a bit early. Not too deep on the plot, but just a lot of fun to watch. Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum played off each other surprisingly well. The film does a good job of taking expected plot lines and turning them on their ear. It uses a good combination of sight gags, and situation comedy to very good effect.

In short, both Channing Tatus (Jenko) and Jonah Hill (Schmidt) are just bad at certain aspects of their chosen careers in law enforcement. They band together to shore up each others weaknesses and manage to just make things worse by dragging each other further down.

Great supporting roles by Dave Franco (brother of James Franco),and Brie Larson do an admirable job representing 'todays youth' while keeping things light. Also a surprise cameo from Depp.

This is a good film for the older set as it turns your expectations of high school upside down, and just generally pokes fun at high school life from today and 25 years ago.

See it. You won't regret it.

Fright Night (2011)

Oh my, what big teeth you have...
22 August 2011
Being a fan of the original movie I wasn't sure what to expect here. I'm not the sort of person that gets upset about remakes. I just judge a movie on it's merits and leave those arguments to other so take this with a grain of personal preference in that regard.

Fright Night revisited is a modern day retelling of the original story. Updated slightly but no overly so. The plot takes place in a suburb outside of Vegas. The story gets started very quickly, blending the meet and greet for the actors into the storyline very well so don't expect a lot of character development for the sake of development alone. A nice touch there and well executed. I can't flaw any of the actors here as they all did very well in the roles they were given with higher marks for Anton and David Tennant (Dr. Who fame).

Anton Yelchin (Star Trek's Checkov) did a refreshing reprisal of the role of Charlie, except in this go round, he's not a total 'geek' as portrayed in the original, but rather has moved on to a young teen's life with a 'hot' girlfriend, and A-List friends. In that process he's apparently left behind his childhood friend Ed (Evil or as many of you will remember him, McLovin from Superbad). As the story starts, a new neighbor has already moved in and there is already a missing student or two at school. Ed (Christopher Mintz) blackmails Charlie into helping him investigate by threatening to expose Charlies young days of acting out role playing games with Ed to the detriment of his new popularity among his school mates. Things quickly ramp up from there.

Ed (Evil) has a much shorter role in this remake and very little actual air time. Not a great performance but then again not a lot of screen time to get attached to his character either. An odd choice but not a drawback given the short screen time.

Colin Farrell actually does a great job at being bad here. I was a bit surprised at the initial choice for Colin in this role but he pulls it out nicely with a great menace to his method so to speak. There's also a funny cameo by the original 'Jerry' (Chris Sarandon) which had the older crowd of Fright Night fans giggling.

This version has some teeth (literally...lots of teeth). It has some great suspense moments and a great re-imaging of the original Peter Vincent that I thought went great with the modern feel of the movie.

Not as much tongue in cheek as the original and definitely a darker tone than the original. This version is definitely not child safe. It has an deserved R rating.

A good summer fare movie. Worth the price of admission ;)

Burlesque (I) (2010)

Where to begin?
22 August 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Let me preface this with the fact that I'm a Sci-Fi horror sort of guy. I'm about the last person that would ever go to see a musical, although I like both Cher and Christina's music. It's not exactly what I would consider a movie I'm interested in.

I had a free Saturday morning and picked this up at a matinée with some friends who talked me into it. I was floored by this. I've seen a few musicals in my many years that I enjoyed. This one knocked it out of the ballpark, largely due to Christina. Her acting was actually acceptable and believable, but it was her singling that stole the show, and that is nothing to be ashamed of in a musical after all all.

When Christina first starts wailing once a little mischief pulls the power to the sound system, I was riveted to the screen. She has an amazing voice with a raw power behind it that's hard to describe. Sheer magnetism. It's one of those scenes that literally reaches out and grabs you. It made my heart skip a beat from the charge it gave. I can only describe it as powerful both in impact and visually.

Cher plays the owner of the Burlesque club. She's a bit like a tough and street wise matronly type but doesn't take too much crap. She's a good choice for the role. For those expecting a lot of Cher air time, you'll be somewhat disappointed as she spends relatively little time on screen, and I think that was the right decision. She wasn't great in this role, but she certainly isn't bad. She pulls out emotion in the right spots and a few grins to your face. Excellent chemistry between her and Christina Aguilera as well as Stanley Tucci.

Stanley Tucci also brings a strong role to the film. As always, he plays a role that is executed to perfection. Stanley plays a companion to Cher (in the friend sense as Stanley is gay) and he pretty much manages the talent, gets the girls on stage and keeps things running with the minute of backstage details.

Last but not least, we have Cam Gigandet who plays Jack the bartender. He's an engaged man who offers his apartment to Ali (Christina) until she can get her own. Innocent enough at first, but Cam's fiancé is thousands of miles away working on another job and sparks start to fly between them once they settle in together. The ladies will appreciate Cam in this role. He's certainly easy on the eyes and also played his part well. I was a bit worried that he couldn't pull this type of role off as it gets a bit intimate, but he does well enough without getting to sticky sweet. Ali and Jack as a couple falling in love come off as sweet without being too gushy. A solid performance.

The storyline itself is, as expected, a little cliché but well executed. Just because a story has been done before doesn't mean you've seen it all or that someone can't come along and do it well, and that was my experience with Burlesque. Well worth he price of admission.

Take this from a Horror/Sci-Fi fan who was surprised as well. You won't be disappointed.

Decent summer fun
15 May 2011
Not sure why the bad reviews. The acting was good, the characters believable, and the storly line was interesting. I can only assume this is based on some comic book that has it's 'fans' in an uproar or people are too jaded.

The movie most reminds me of Vampire Hunter D with a religious twist. The movie is fairly short at 1.5 hours and it doesn't lag overly much for the plot. I would be interested in a sequel. Post apocalyptic goodness.

To all the haters out there. Lighten up. It's a summer flick, not a life commitment.

Decent enough with more action than the previous titles
7 July 2010
Let me first state that I'm not a 'fan' of this series, so I've never read the books, and my only exposure is via the movies themselves.

I found this installment in the series to actually be a bit better than the first two. It is definitely more action oriented, with a faster paced plot than the previous titles. I was not a fan of the angst filled themes in the first two, and you don't escape that completely in the third, but it's not so overbearing as it was in the first two where I ended up just wishing Bella would be hit by a truck.

The acting actually seemed improved from the first two as well. I would chalk this up to the actors becoming more familiar with their roles and having a little more experience under their belt. I'm actually surprised that this film has a 4.5. I can only assume the fans of the genre found some fault or flaw that they didn't think kept true to the original story. I didn't find myself looking at my watch, or noticing how long the movie was so I rated it slightly above average.

If you're a casual viewer of this series like I am, you will probably enjoy it. It smacks of typical summer fare that is enjoyable, if not forgettable. It was easily worth matinée prices and kept me entertained for 2 hours, so I consider it a better than average movie.

6 out of 10 for decent action scenes, a good story line, and decent acting. Don't expect any awards, but expect to get a decent few hours of entertainment.

OK movie, but a bit preachy
25 January 2010
Acting was more than adequate and very believable. Movie storyline is good up to the mid point where it degenerates into a Rambo style shootout. It's at this point that the storyline devolves completely and from there your pretty much running on bullets. Note that this is not a great action flick either, so if you're expecting heaven and earth battles, you'll be disappointed. It's just a bit repetitive from mid-point on.

On a side note, this movie gave me the impression of being very preachy with an "I told you so" sort of feel to it that reminded me of today's conservative politicking. There's a fine line between telling a great story and preaching at someone and I found myself getting irritated at the heavy handedness in this one.

To sum up: 5 out of 10 stars for good acting, and an interesting premise, but it goes south after midpoint, and it's a bit too preachy.

WALL·E (2008)

Good movie from Pixar, but not a 9 out of 10
2 July 2008
This was a great movie. I would NOT give it a 9 out of 10. It's a bit short, and other than WALL-E, the rest of the characters are somewhat forgettable. Pixar did an amazing job with WALL-E himself, managing to have him emote all ranges of emotion through his mechanical features. Kudos for a job well done there.

WALL-E is very good though, and a cut above the average film, even with the lack of dialog in the beginning of the film. Without that dialog, it gives the film a rather keystone cops sort of appeal which I found very refreshing. I found myself laughing out loud quite a few times at the on-screen antics.

Children will love it for the cuteness factor and the slapstick. There is some adult humor in it, although nothing over the top. There's actually less in this one than typical for Pixar films.

Lower your expectations from it's current 9.1 IMDb rating and you should do fine. It's great, but not the all time IMDb top 10 material that it's rated for right now (#9 of all time at last glance).

Overall, two thumbs up, fun for the whole family ;)

Great Movie...but those prone to sea sickness beware!
18 January 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I really enjoyed this one. Although it's a short hour and 20 minutes, it's a fun ride. You'll feel like the party last forever before the action gets started, but it goes at a fairly good pace after that. The acting isn't academy worthy, but it is certainly good. I can't really fault any of the actors as they all did a great job considering they are all unknowns (you wouldn't know that from the quality job). The CGI is screen worthy. Very fast glimpses for the most part. The smaller budget shows a bit there. Action scenes are good and some of them have a good tension to them letting your mind try to figure out whats coming. I liked it for those points.

All in all, a fun movie. I should warn you that if you had problems with Blair Witch, you may want to skip this one. The vomit cam can be a bit much. One of the people in my group actually had to get up and go to the bathroom because it made him nauseous. It's can get pretty extreme in scenes.

Definitely worth a watch!

***Minor Spoilers Follow*** ' ' ' ' ' ' For those that are moaning about the magical battery in the camera and such..Hello, there is only 1 hour and 20 minutes on the camera, meaning it filmed for that long. It wasn't running all night. For those complaining that the subways were empty, don't forget that they had already evacuated most of the city by that point. These people were running towards the monster, not away from it. The area they were in was already deserted. I will agree that this camera with it's night vision was a bit much to believe. That's more of a military type hardware, not some Best Buy video camera ;) Last but not least, did anyone catch the quick shot of this monster falling into the water at the very end of the movie? I'm talking about the very end of the movie when it flashes the scene at Coney Island and if you look out at the water there's a ferry. Watch to the left of it and you'll see something fall from the sky and hit the water. It is not flaming like a meteor. It looks gray and round. I'm guessing this is how the monster actually makes it's appearance? No one else seemed to notice in the theater.

3D has come a LONG way and what a great movie to use it on
5 December 2007
I was basically floored by the 3D quality of this movie. It wasn't the typical knife thrust at your face. The entire scene was 3d. The people, the environment, everything. Amazing what their doing these days. After about 5 minutes of disorientation my eyes finally adjusted and I didn't have any more focus problems. A definite must see if only for the 3D aspect.

For the story perspective, it has a good pace. I didn't find myself feeling bored or watching the clock. The visuals were stunning, and the voice acting was top notch. All in all a very nice movie. The 3D aspect was all gravy.

Two thumbs up ;)

Tin Man (2007)

A tad slow, but overall a good revisioning of a classic story
5 December 2007
I was rather surprised that I enjoyed this. The story was obviously dragged out a bit thin to reach 6 hours in length. The stretching causes the pace to seem a bit too slow. Possibly better editing could have alleviated that. The characters are well thought out and thankfully not exact copies of the originals. From what I gathered after seeing all three episodes is that this story takes place 500 years after the original Dorothy came to Oz. The story is much darker, which is refreshing.

The leads do admirable jobs in their roles. I found only the lion to be somewhat boring, probably due to his inability to vocalize very much. He just didn't emote very well, although he did have some decent screen time, I just didn't connect with him at all. Toto was another character that confused a bit. His motivation was questionable considering the devotion he professed to have. I also wish the Wizard was a more prominent fixture, but all in all, I was OK with that branch of the story.

To sum up. Good acting, and I think a good choice on the lead for Zooey. I found her quirkiness and general kind of cute gutsiness refreshing. The special effects are better than average and certainly better than the typical home-made sci-fi look you may be used to. The scenery was also very nice in the movie (albeit with a darker twist). If you enjoyed the original, and you aren't a die hard fan hoping for a rehash of the same old story, then check this one out. It may be worth your time ;)

Probably one of the best axe head choppings I've ever seen ;)
20 October 2007
Warning: Spoilers
What can I say. I loved this flick. It was a nice ride. The movie starts off with a good teaser, and escalates into action within about 15 minutes after a brief character introduction to the main players. After the initial shock of violence, the move escalates into a tense cat and mouse (literally). I found myself squirming in my seat more than once with a tight grip on my arm rests.

The plot is a unique idea for vampire flicks, which seems pretty rare these days. Vampires decide to visit a town in far north Alaska that gets 30 days of night in the dead of winter.

Buffet anyone? Josh Hartnett and Melissa George play well together, and the supporting actors do a good job of getting you emotionally involved. They did a great job of making you feel the hopelessness of the situation.

If your a vampire fan, this is a MUST see. If your just a horror fan, or even a gore fan, that is also a must see.

Great tension, great plot, great acting. Fun for the whole family (as long as they are old enough to vote anyway)

Throw us a bone...
6 October 2007
I wish everyone would stop wasting everyone's time with how NOT like the book this is. I've never read the books, and don't really care to. I'm more interested in whether this is a good movie or not. That's why I come to IMDb. I love this site because the thousands that do see these movies tend to average out the wacko's, plants, extreme fans, etc.

It seems every opinion on here is based on how it meanders from the book plot. I think 20 posts stating it isn't anything like the book is sufficient to give us an idea that it isn't like the book. We get the point. Now how about some useful posts? Preferably by someone who can get past the facts above? I've seen many remakes based on novels. Some dead on, some barely resembling the original work. Some great. Some pathetic.

Can't someone just comment on the movie and tell me if it's good or not? The rating seems OK'ish, but I'd rather find out with some decent opinions if I'm wasting my cash before I go based on the movie, and not some fan's interpretation of the book gone wrong.

Is it more of a children's movie? I get that impression from the trailer. Is the acting good? Bad? Forgettable? Throw me a bone here...

Thanks

Nothing more than a screen saver with a minor plot
26 November 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I so wanted to like this movie. The previews were very eye catching, and the premise was also very good. A thousand year epic. Unfortunately it didn't live up to my expectations. It's more like 15 minutes from a Spanards point of view, and another 40 or so from 'current day'. The rest is all fluff with no filler.

I came across as not much more than a screen saver with a very small plot. The entire movie had maybe 30 to 40 minutes of actual character discourse. The rest was pretty scenery.

Don't get me wrong. Hugh had a great performance here, although with so little to work with it was difficult to get emotionally involved in any of the characters. The film simply tries to be a bit TOO artsy, without the meat of the story to back it up. It's somewhat disjointed and wispy. I would guess that a better editing job might have helped, but not enough to bring this one out of it's own daydream.

The film starts up by just dropping you into a scene, completely lost. At first I thought this might be intentional except for the fact that the character himself (hugh) is not the slightest bit confused as to where he is. It doesn't do much to help with that fact, even after 10 minutes. I kept waiting for some sort of narrative, hint of a time line, starting place, stopping place, etc. They took far to long to appear. Once you finally start to get your bearings, it simply drops the story for another 10 minutes of very pretty scenery. This sequence is repeated throughout the entire film. It is a shame, because the movie has great potential, both with the current day story line, and the Spanish conquistador storyline. The acting that we do get to see if quite good, but with litterly no story behind it, it simply isn't enough. Many on here may claims some lofty hidden meaning in the film, or strive to give it acclaim for being a new vision in movie making. I simply think they are still a bit dazzled by the effects/visuals, which I must agree are quite nice.

Even the ending is rather abrupt and unfulfilling. Someone must have jiggled the mouse ;)

Pleasantville (1998)
9/10
The human condition presented in black and white
22 May 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I recently re-watched this gem of a movie. This is, by far, one of my favorite films to date. This initially appears to be a somewhat light film about 2 modern day characters ( Tobey Maguire and Reese Witherspoon) that have a run-in with Don Knotts as a T.V. repairmen. The outcome of which ends them both in the T.V. show of Pleasantville. A place where the temperature is always 72 degrees, the sun always shines, and everything is in black and white, and ...pleasant.

After the initial shock wears off, both characters discover how 2-dimensional the characters in Pleasantville are. They find themselves as the main characters in a 50's T.V. show as children of George and Betty Parker. The actors in this film do a phenomenal job portraying a life devoid of passion. They find that all of the characters go about life in a mechanical fashion, without any knowledge of lust, hope, grief, or anger.

Reese's character (Jennifer) quickly turns to her old ways, and promptly takes her 'boyfriend' (Paul Walker of The Fast and the Furious fame) to lovers lane. She shows him the joys of sex, at which point, the exodus from Eden begins. Shortly after Paul drops Reese off at home, he sees a single red rose. By red, I mean this is the only non black and white thing in Pleasantville. From here on the movie reaches out and grabs you. It turns into a cascading affect of self discovery, both good and bad for the citizens of Smallville. Initially all of the high school kids enter onto this path, as glimpses here and there of pink bubble gum, neon signs at the local hang out/diner, rose red lips, and curiosity about the previously unknown world outside of Pleasantville. The Diner and Lovers lane become a place of color in a black and white world with many allegories to The Garden of Eden.

They discover things like love, lust, wonder about the world around them. This is where I disagree with many of the reviews here. This is a movie about passion. You have to look beyond the first and most obvious things that curious teenagers do. The changes in the children begin to happen with the parents. Suddenly dinner isn't cooked and ready at 6. A wife burns her husband's shirt with a iron because she was daydreaming. They see rain and rainbows in Technicolor for the first time, and a tree in front of the Parkers' household bursts into flame as the mother (Joan Allen) pleasures herself in the bathroom (with a little instruction from Reese Witherspoon on the facts of life). These scenes are all tastefully done.

From here the film takes a turn into the darker side of human emotion. Soon, the 'coloreds' are drawing attention to the fact that things are changing in Pleasantville. Signs stating that no coloreds are allowed start appearing on Main Street while the coloreds continue to explore themselves and the world around them. Angry mobs begin to form, trying to stamp out any sign of change. As each person discovers passion in some form (whether hate, love, lust, bigotry, grief, regret), they turn into coloreds who then initially hide in the local soda shop, desperate to escape the angry mobs outside. A new city ordinance is passed declaring what music is acceptable, and what colors are safe (as long as they are a shade of gray).

Jeff Daniels also shines here as the local Diner owner. He finds himself attracted to Miss Parker, who in turn finds herself drawn to him even though her character is 'happily' married. Daniels also finds he has a passion for art. He goes from a mechanical shop keeper to a person in love, who also stands defiant with Tobey Maguire in painting a naked mural showing Miss Parker. This sets off a riot, and ends with the Diner being trashed and a bonfire culminating in a book burning. Some of these moments have you sitting with a lump in our throat from the raw emotion the visuals and the music evoke from this film.

Suffice it to say; this is one of the finest and most original films I've ever seen, and certainly not to be missed. For those that think this is an attack on moral values, you have missed the point. This is not about lust, or promiscuity. It simply shows that were are all human. We make mistakes. We love. We live. As a result, we have passions of which sometimes you cannot control.

Silent Hill (2006)
6/10
Might be thrilling for game fans...decent fare for the rest of us
24 April 2006
Hmm..where to begin. I'm not a player of this particular game, so I had no idea other than the most basic, of what the plot involved. The story tends to be a bit slow at first while the mother and daughter characters are developed a bit. Once they hit the town of Silent Hill, the pace becomes quite acceptable.

For fans of the game, I'm sure they already knew the in's and out's of this town, as well as a larger understanding of what was happening. I'm usually quick to pick up plot points, and rarely have to 'think' about a movie. They just make sense. This movie actually requires a bit of thought if your not familiar with the game. I'm still not exactly sure what happened at the very end ;)

The acting is not steller, yet it's not bad. The mother stands out as one of the better performers, as well as the tough as nails cop. Both are likable by the end of the movie. The others don't really shine here.

The movie is two hours, and I did notice that it seemed a bit long at times. Those moments were few and far between though. It has some tense moments, and a few creepy moments, although I don't recall anything that had me clinging to the edge of my seat. That said, the visuals are very good. Think Constantine, although with a little less budget, but very original. This movie is also far more bloody, which in my opinion is a good thing. I'm an adult. I don't need the diet movie when I can see the real deal.

I don't recall the soundtrack at all, which I suppose could be viewed as a good thing if your the blend in the background type. I'm wishing it could have been a bit more memorable.

Acting 6 out of 10. Visual Effects 8 out of 10. Sound/Music a 5 out of 10. Plot 6 out of 10

Overall a 6 out of 10. If your a horror buff, a fan of the game, or just into something that's not your usual hack and slash, this is a decent bet. Might possibly interest those into mysteries, or suspense flicks. You could certainly do worse.
