Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004)
I won't be a party to killing poor people
In response to another's review of this movie, yes it is movie is propaganda, but sometimes you have to fight fire with fire. Fahrenheit 9/11 is a vast maturation over his previous films. Moore used his biting sarcasm effectively & instead of using satire, irony and the ridiculous, relied on footage of GWB & the soldiers in Iraq to tell the truth. Parts of this film were a punch in the gut, others were like comic relief but in the end all I could feel was shame and disgust for what we have allowed our country to become. You don't have to take this film for gospel, but the many of the images shown could not be manipulated or misread, they were they were & they were the truth.
Good Fences (2003)
Good Fences, bad movie
This movie made me feel as if I had missed some important scenes from the very beginning. There were continuity errors and plots that stopped as abruptly as they started. I was very disappointed because I love Whoopi Goldberg & Danny Glover, in addition to that have always trusted & respected Danny Glovers taste in his choice of roles, "Grand Canyon" for example. I just could not finish this movie, after what seemed an eternity, but was probably just a little over an hour; we had to turn it off. There was no comedy, there was nothing about the characters to make you empathize or sympathize with them, there was no evoking of emotion at all regarding this movie and the clips of their past were poorly edited, confusing, and unnecessary. What could have been a great idea for a movie, even as a drama & not a comedy (although I think a comedy in this situation would have been better, because I love to watch white people freak out & start acting like complete idiots, it makes me laugh) became a waste of my $1 credit at the video store.
The Whole Wide World (1996)
Truly amazing film
This movie was one of the best movies I've ever seen. Often times Indie films can alienate more mainstream viewers, this movie transcended both genres. Vincent & Renee were amazing in this film & their chemistry on screen was almost tangible. I originally saw this movie on IFC or Bravo late one night...I can't remember which. The next day I told my husband about it & we searched the video stores & couldn't find it. We waited diligently until it was on cable again & he watched it. We were engrossed one minute & sobbing the next. The second time I saw it....it was better. Vincent D'Onofrio has to be one of, if not the best actors of his generation. He evokes such empathy, such sympathy from his viewers...or such horror, depending on what you are viewing. From the 80's I have been watching his career carefully & his choices to play, "Household Saints" and "Happy Accidents", to mention a few keep reminding me of why I have to see his movies. And Renee Zellweger...well, what more can I say except I love her. This is truly an amazing film. Thank you Dan Ireland, Vincent D'Onofrio, Renee Zellweger, and everyone else who put this amazing work of art together.
Star of Midnight (1935)
One of my favorite films
Yes this movie is a rip off of The Thin Man, but that doesn't mean that it's not good at what it does. I for one appreciate that it is more light hearted, silly and goofy. This film quickly became one of my own & my husband's favorite movies. Ginger is adorable, and she & William Powell have great chemistry together.
One Fine Day (1996)
Suprising!
I saw this on a Sunday while doing laundry, thinking that it was a good way to waste time at my inlaws, and instead found a truly enjoyable comedy. I have read reviews that call it "predictable yet enjoyable", yet, I find it reminiscent of the screwball comedies of Hollywood's past, extremely funny & unrealistic & realistic all at the same time. I can think of no better way to spend my one day off a week with my husband than including a movie like this into our plans.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992)
Funny & different
I am a big fan of all movies that portray ditzy blonds as the heroes, showing the world just how much we can do! I really enjoyed Buffy, especially since I am not a big horror fan and this movie lightened the scare with humor! I think that Kristy Swanson is a great heroine for bumbling blonds! She is a modern day Jean Arthur!
