Not as bad as people say
27 June 2013
This movie is not as bad as people say it is, it's only that people were expecting another thing completely. The movie is way different from the book, where the book is more of a thriller filled with suspense and investigative work, the movie is an action film with some scares here and there. But that was very clear from the trailers.

However, the movie tries to explain the reason behind the pandemic, which most zombie movies won't even bother to do, and you get to root for humanity, whereas movies such as Resident Evil makes you root for the main character only.

So maybe I won't go watch it again, but as far as 2013 goes, this is one of the best blockbusters of the year.

More than meets the eye
1 January 2013
First the bad. I think Dennis Quaid is the biggest fail in this movie. Whether it was his acting or his character it's inconsistent and emotionally distant to the audience and it's the main reason of why the ending could be unsatisfying for many.

Putting the bad aside, I think this movie should be seen from a moral perspective. The main character goes through a roller-coaster of emotions and moral dilemmas, and just as in the real world, he makes mistakes and tries to make amends to them, but his efforts are thwarted by a society that condemns him to live with the consequences of his mistakes, including the guilt of making them.

There aren't many movies that challenge the viewer to think about the moral dilemmas as this movie does, and for that it deserves special recognition.

Cloud Atlas (2012)
5/10
This is a very long opening for what could've been a masterpiece
29 December 2012
Warning: Spoilers
In the film, Cloud Atlas is the name of the musical piece that is being made by one of the main characters, so I see appropriate to analyze the film as if it was a classical music piece. The first half of the movie tries so hard to make a mystery out of one dimensional stories by hiding important ( and rather obvious)information from the viewer. And even though the narrator tries to explain everything to you two or three times, you don't get the movie until it's about to finish. However, just like in an orchestra you listen to different solos before the climax of the piece, so does Cloud Atlas builds for so long, that you think "this is going to be so amazing". The first two hours of the movie is like the ascend of really big roller-coaster, the problem is what comes on the other side. The climax in the movie (which is audio-ed by the climax of the Cloud Atlas Sixteth), is short, obvious and predictable, and the ending and conclusion is mediocre.

The movie is about two good stories, two not so good ones, and two bad stories glued up together with Tom Hanks trying so desperately to convince you that all of them are linked together. However, I don't see any reason why all the stories couldn't been fit into one time period (i.e. Second Wordl War), where one of the characters would be fighting to free the Jews instead of freeing the African - Americans from slavery, the other one would be a musician striving to get some fame in the middle of a war, the other a publisher / writer that's too old for his job, a reporter that risks her life in order to cover a war story, and a Jew (instead of a "fabricant") inspiring others to survive and free themselves before they're made into soap.

I don't understand how this movie got to have an 8.+ rating here, I think that people who didn't understand it rated it higher so they wouldn't seem stupid.

Michael Bay is the worst thing that ever happened to science fiction
8 July 2011
There, I said it. I haven't seen any adaptation made by Michael Bay that I liked. From X-Men, and Superman to now Transformers. In fact, he doesn't make adaptations, he only steals the name of the characters and makes something of his own and Transformers is no exception.

Even though the movie has amazing effects, the story runs extremely fast at first, and then super slow towards the end, you are presented with characters that you are supposed to know but they never explain to you how or why. From a Transformers fan I would say "hideous", as an common cinephile, "confusing". The comedy is very cheap, many sex jokes there, and the screaming, gosh!!!, two hours of screaming.

The worst thing of this movie is that Michael Bay transformed Optimus Prime, a wise and brave warrior that preferred non-violent actions, into a cold hearted murderer.

To sum it all, this movie is everything but Transformers.

Bad geography lesson
6 October 2008
Warning: Spoilers
It would be harsh to judge this movie for it's factual errors because we know that it's intended to be a fantasy movie for kids. However, maybe the people from other countries doesn't look at this so bad as I did being from Mexico. All the geography in the movie is way wrong. First they go across the border by car and suddenly arrive to Los Cabos without transcurring a single day. Then Chloe gets kidnapped and taken to Mexico City by car (note that somehow they leaped over the ocean) and arrive also in less than one day. After that they go to Puerto Vallarta, where they take a train to Tijuana (note that there are no train stations in Tijuana) and somehow they arrive to Chihuaha (If you see a map you'd know that Chihuahua is in the opposite direction) where they find a chihuahua's civilization (also note that the principal chihuahua Moctezuma is not a chihuahua) where they are descendants of the Aztec people (there were no Aztecs up in Chihuahua). Note that the bad dog traced them all over those places and also did the inspector. Man I would love to get the white car they used!!! they traveled all across Mexico in less than 2 days. No wonder why America is doing so bad in geography

Talking about fast plot
1 October 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Wow!!!! I think this movie is funny, but not very funny. It looks like they had this huge story to run but they were short in time, everything went way to fast, there wasn't even time to laugh at a joke because in was one thing to the other, come on even things that usually take hours or days in this movie happens in half of minute (like building a rocket). Also some of the characters weren't well animated, they had very robotic movements and the aliens' skin looks so unreal (I know, they're unreal but they look like plastic!!!!) Also there where some major spoofs, for example they use geothermal energy from a volcano that doesn't have lava but a strange freezing liquid. Anyways, I think it's an OK movie, I've seen worse, and at least is OK for the whole family to watch.
