The Last of Us: Long, Long Time (2023)
I think I'm gonna love you for a long long time.
Love will abide
Take things in stride
Sounds like good advice
But there's no one at my side
And time washes clean love's wounds unseen
That's what someone told me
But I don't know what it means
'Cause I've done everything I know
To try and make you mine
And I think I'm gonna love you
For a long long time
Caught in my fears
Blinking back the tears
I can't say you hurt me
When you never let me near
And I never drew one response from you
All the while you fell all over girls you never knew
'Cause I've done everything I know
To try and make you mine
And I think it's gonna hurt me
For a long long time
Wait for the day you'll go away
Knowing that you warned me
Of the price I'd have to pay
And life's full of flaws
Who knows the cause?
Living in the memory of a love that never was
'Cause I've done everything I know
To try and change your mind
And I think I'm gonna miss you
For a long long time
'Cause I've done everything I know
To try and make you mine
And I think I'm gonna love you
For a long long time.
The Takeover (2022)
An EU low budget version of Enemy of the state
The overall theme and feel (and some direct scenes even) is from enemy of the state. Thats one of my fav movies of all time, and i do enjoy similar movies. But this one was a bit too much :D
The biggest flaw is clearly that it was very easy to predict every scene. The main actress was charming though and the buddy element with the date was a nice extra. Acting wasnt good, but not bad enough to be super distracting either in most cases.
Overall though, it just felt cheap and off in too many ways. The polish and weight wasnt there. 6/10 is generous, but like i said, im a sucker for these type of movies ;)
Travelers (2016)
Good idea. But too much "crime of the week" and filler upon filler.
I was hoping this wouldnt be a "crime of the week" series, but i was wrong. It had a great idea and its polished and good, for being what it is. But i was hoping for a series that wouldnt focus on weekly episodes, but rather a larger series spanning arc style, like alot of modern series started using after series like the wire, game of thrones and homeland, for example. Now we get the usual "big, interesting story arc as the background that we only get a few minutes of progression on every week, after the crime of the week is resolved". Its sad, but i guess they didnt have interesting material to flesh out the main idea for x amount of seasons. Make a miniserie next time, and spare us this format. On top of this, we get even MORE filler from the super annoying "family drama" with spouses that take up way too much time. Filler inside of filler.
If they took all the interesting bits from the main story arc, deleted all the rest and ended up with a 8-12 episode mini-series total, with a conclusion, this would have been a 9/10 series!
With that said. Its still a good watch if you like that style of tv-series. Just watch it on netflix, so you have that handy 10-second-fast-forward-button ready for clicking every time a family argument/make up-session comes on the screen! Be ready to click that button alot.
Drive (2011)
Mostly good, but with a flaw that destroys most of the movie
To start things off, i really like movies. Lots of movies. In different genres. I like hyper violence and i like sad, artsy movies that no sane person would sit through and i like big blockbusters and everything in between as long as its good in my world and the world thats within that movie.
I understand this movie and i understand what people like in it. I like some of its elements too. I love the soundtrack and the contrasts between control and insanity and between calmness and panic. I like the graphic style and the surrounding feeling of it. I loved the scenes where he fell in love with the girl. I loved the tension and strong emotions portrayed with minimalism. But the things i don't like is so severe that it just irritates the hell out of me and i cant get it out of my head. The fact that so many didn't react or write about the things i reacted to just makes me doubt my own sanity. After i was done watching it, i went through some trouble and long hours reading up on other peoples opinions just trying to find clues of why i didn't like it and so many did.
OK, so what didn't i like?
I think the major issue i had with the movie is a major and growing problem, and that this movie just was the last drop for me personally so to speak, and it ruined it for me. I have just had it with some things in story telling in movies. One of the most annoying thing is how they portray gangsters and mafia in action/drama/gangster movies. It just seems so tiny and unorganised and weak and sloppy and braindead and totally insane that what seems like big crime syndicates can fall so easy. You only see a couple of guys and thats it. Of course there are more people behind them that the movie doesn't show (cant have the movie go on for 17 hours just to show all the bad guys) but the way its presented its totally unbelievable and unrealistic (within the realms of the particular movie's universe ofc). I understand that those big organisations don't count on a guy like this and that it could happen the way it did and that its random and bla bla bla. But its been done so many times, and in such bad ways that it makes me sick. It destroys the whole movie. OK, these guys weren't the biggest organisation in the west, but big enough. I love crazy ass movies that have a sic and twisted universe that is unreal and different from our own. But the movie always have to be believable within the universe it creates for itself. Always. Thats one of the most important things for me in a movie, and if it falls short, everything starts to fall. Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind made perfect sense to me. So did brazil and twelve monkeys. So did scarface and taxidriver and Rocky and even day after tomorrow (yes, i said it!)(just to mention a few examples). Warrior fell short a little bit, but not as much as drive.
Am i nitpicking when i hate this movie based on the way it portraits the gangsters he goes toe to toe with? I am trying really hard to forget it. To just let it slide. To let all the good things about the move win me over and relax.
But where should i draw the line then? When is it enough?
