Boogeyman (2005)
Boogeyman is the most horribly directed horror movie of the past few years.
Boogeyman was an awful piece of cinema. I had a hunch before I saw it, but i thought it would at least provide enough action and/or entertainment to keep me happily occupied like Darkness Falls did. Who knew my low expectations would be so let down? Boogeyman is the most terribly directed horror movie i've ever seen. I've never felt so humiliated by a movie. As a horror fan, I go into most movies expecting a couple of cheap jump scenes, but at least a genuine fright or two after a few minutes of being kept on the edge of my seat. Boogeyman shat all over this theory. For example, out of nowhere, this loud ass music would blast me awake, show me a 2 second slide show of a dead child and green "scary" eyes, and then continue as normal as if it didn't happen. As this tactic was repeated several times, I began to become really frustrated. The scenes were totally pointless! The quick cuts came out of nowhere and were forgotten in sub-seconds. By the third or fourth time it happened, I wasn't evenly remotely scared.
I could also rant about the acting, or the lack there of, but come on, we are talking about a no-substance horror movie here. This isn't "The Ring" or a movie that contains heavy characterizations. So I won't spend much time on it other than saying it was craptacular, as one should expect.
The special effects were downright terrible. I've seen better in video games for PSone, especially during the climax. Then again, we the audience aren't the best judges of special effects at the end because, o yeah, you can't make out a goddamn thing that is happening! All the sudden characters are flying through the air and there are flashes of purple lightning. Even Hollow man makes an appearance, i think.
Anyway, from a fan of horror movies - including Darkness Falls - I'm warning you, don't see this movie! I am giving Boogeyman a 2/10 for the only two things I liked about it. First was an effective seen involving a bunch of dead children, and second was a great jump scene that involves Barry Watson's dead mother.
Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004)
If you're looking for non-stop action, look no further.
Resident Evil: Apocalypse is the movie event of the season for me. I went into this baby with mixed expectations however. Point in fact, this is the sequel to the surprise gem that was Resident Evil. I have been looking forward to part 2 since seeing the closing frame of that film. My explosive anticipation has been silenced somewhat in the past few weeks, with all the negative output from advance reviews and what not. Still, nothing short of a million dollars would keep me away from the theater tonight. After the credits rolled, I felt numb; I couldn't believe that all of the time spent waiting for this movie had come to an end, an end which quite frankly, I wasn't sure how I felt about.
Let's break RE:A down. The plot was almost non existent, which kinda sucks being that the original was founded on a - dare i say it - engaging plot. We got likable characters with a certain depth to them, enough for us to hope for their survival. This film threw in a bunch of "cool" new characters without so much of a mention as to where they're coming from (yes I'm talking about you Jill Valentine). Being an avid fan of the games, I was hoping to find at least some reference to Jill's experience in the mansion. I let it slid, I figured I knew her background so no use in wasting time right? Well I will tell you this much, there was NEVER a dull moment in RE:A. This is probably the most action packed movie you will see all year, if not the last 5 years. Each scene finds the protagonists in a new environment with one of the myriad threats presented along the way. I had expected a more action centric movie as compared to the first, but jeez, this movie was so over the top I found it impossible not to enjoy.
One of the highlights of Resident Evil was Milla Jovovich, who once again owns the screen. While her character lacks the dialogue and sass she had in the first movie, she partakes in more action scenes than any other character. Her performance was mostly in facial expressions and an intimidation factor highly elevated from the original. Basically, Alice is one badass mother****er, an attitude Milla conveyed to a tee. Sienna Guilleroy was satisfying in her 2-dimensional role as Jill Valentine. She played it cool and her outfit was classic. No one else in the movie really stuck out acting wise, although the little girl was a nice form of continuity with the first.
Here was my BIGGEST problem with Resident Evil: Apocalypse: the directing. Alexander Witt must be a schizophrenic (sp?) because this movie felt like it had three different directors. First, there was the MTV style quick cuts which are becoming all too popular in big Hollywood action movies as of late. Also appearing were a couple of cool 90s action movie shots in which all the action is clear from a bitchin angle, like shot behind Alice in the church watching the explosion. Finally the b-horro film director had to get his say, adding (many) effective jump scenes and crooked angles. The guy just couldn't make up his mind; my eyes rolled each time the MTV style was featured, something which happened too much for my taste. I think Paul Anderson would've done a much better job.
I am still collecting my thoughts on this movie. It was such a big thing for me, I couldn't possibly decide a solid grade after a single viewing. I did like a lot of what I saw, exclaimed "holy sh*t" a lot, and even jumped out of my seat on much more occasions than I was expecting. I'm going to recommend this movie to fans of the original and to all action fans; you should not be disappointed.
Darkness Falls (2003)
wicked fun horror!
i had a blast watchin Darkness Falls! Let me start off sayin that this movie is not the next Ring, but it still is a step in the right direction for PG-13 horror, entertaining the audience w/ countless jump scenes and a few tense ones too.
Acting is not the strongest card here, the characters are undeveloped and arent given enough to work w. Kyle is the knowledgable hero, Cailtin always acts scared and worried, and the kid is just there. The rest of the cast are just there to get killed and spit out one-liners that are pretty funny. Directing was the strongest area of this movie. Jonathan Liebesman kno's how to make a scary movie, effectively using lighting and sly camera angles to capitalize on each jolt. The creature was pretty creepy, although the effectiveness began to wear off by the end of the film. This leads me to my biggest complaint, the semi-lame finale and the horrible cgi on MINOR-SPOILER HERE the fairies demise MINOR-SPOILER END
this flick is the ultimate guilty pleasure which doesnt let up in its short runtime. It slaps the viewers in the face with awesome scene after awesome scene and breezes through its short runtime. this is not to be missed for any horror fan who doesnt need all the s***(character development) and wants to get down right to the story.
8.5/10
Scooby-Doo (2002)
Made for the fans!!!
HOOOORRRRAAAAYYYYYY!!!!!! SCOOBY DOO kicked ass!!!!! wow, i really, really loved this movie. it was made especially for fans of the show, which i am. there were many funny parts, relating to character speculations of the show. The cast (i know many people doubted their talents) was perfect. Linda Cardellini was the big surprise for me, i loved her as velma!!! Lillard was great, as shown in commercials, Gellar is very good with Daphne, even Prinze Jr. was good/ok. and im just goin to say that anyone who hates scrappy will love this movie!!!
The perfect re-creation of my fav. cartoon of all time - 10/10
Resident Evil (2002)
a solid horror action film!!!
well, originally to me, this movie had cheese written all over it. I expected to have a good time, but Res.Evil, managed to pull me in, make me laugh, make me jump, and best of all, had me -and the rest of the theater- cheerin our asses off. This film definitely does the popular game series justice.
as acting goes, milla jovovich is new queen of kickin ass (excludin TV's Buffy) she does great with what is her first REAL starring role. the rest of the cast, especially michelle rodriguez, handle themselves well and are genuinely likable.
the gore in this movie is pretty good and both the zombies and the dobermans were terrific looking. Paul Anderson does a great job writing and directing the film, bringing to life the best video game adaptation ever!
the ending was superb and i cannot wait 4 the sequel. Paul, crack ur knuckles, u got some written to do!!!! 9.5/10
Soul Survivors (2001)
A Greatly Acted Romance Thriller!!!!!
I SAW IT!!! it was very good. it was a good romance-thriller and not the teeny-bopper horror as i suspected it to be. acting was great, and the directing was very good!!! the plot was interesting and the movie was confusing, but most of it made sense at the end, which is also a drop confusing. luckily, i had a friend explain what i didn't get. there are alot of clues, but its nothing that u would pick up on. diagnosis- 9/10.
by the way if u go in expecting big horror, u'll be disappointed. But there is a very good amount of gore for a PG-13, so don't let the rating turn u off.
