Educational, caring, landscapes are comparable to The Lion King, great music
8 January 2003
I haven't seen such breathtaking landscape animation since The Lion King! This animation was partially beyond compare, and partially worse than most animated films out there. Even Quest For Camelot's characters seem better drawn. But still, it was a great try.

As for the story, it's wonderful, absolutely wonderful. My cousin cares a great deal about wildlife, at just 9 years old. She identifies with Eliza, and hasn't seen this movie yet but I was able to appreciate how educational and morally right this movie was. It's splendid in its dimensions, and deserves some recognition.

What I expected more of was comedy, though. But I think it's just fine the way it is.

Nick succeeded in bringing a landscape to the screen, if only they could make their characters better animted.

Deserving of more respect than it is getting; and it is MENKEN'S BEST WORK YET (some spoilers)
29 December 2002
Warning: Spoilers
My best friend Carolyn ranted and raved about this film, and I always said I liked Sleeping Beauty and nothing could surpass it. Well, out of curiousity I listened to some music (randomly) on a music downloading service. I was hooked with the first notes of The Bells of Notre Dame, and determined that I would someday see this movie. Well with its rerelease I bought it, and was spellbound. I just can't believe the guts the Disney execs had to pull it off. When I first heard about it, I, like many of the reviewers, thought, "What are they thinking?" but it took seeing the film (rather, hearing the music first) to appreciate it. That said, here's a bit about why this film deserves some respect: SOME SPOILERS

Poor Walt must have been rolling in his grave when he heard his execs even considering to undertake such a challenge. I think if he had been around he would have turned it down flat. He even said he wanted The Jungle Book to be far from what it was written to be. He wanted his works to be for children, pleasing to the eyes and ears, with a wholesome story. Well, I can't say he would be proud of it, however it would get his respect for a number of reasons:

The animation is far superior than any other animated film I've ever seen, surpassing Sleeping Beauty and Pocahontas. The battle for Notre Dame at the end is a spectacular clash of colors. The drawings of Notre Dame herself are amazing, especially the inside during Esmerelda's endearing ballad "God Help The Outcasts." I wasn't crazy about the three gargoyles; which is why I stayed away from this one, but seeing the movie for a few times made me realize how important they are to the story's progression. Once you analyze them and their presence it seems almost excusable. I don't care for their song however it does set a bit of opposite-foreshadowing. The gargoyles think Esmerelda is in love with Quasi but in fact she is not.

The most amazing animation comes during the song "Hellfire." This is Menken's most incredible song, and the best song I've ever heard for a film. It's innaproppriate for young children, yes. However as a sequence it deserves more respect than it's gotten.

The main reason I enjoyed this film is because of the characters. They seem almost human, unlike so many of Disney's other characters who just seem like figments of our imagination. These characters, the story, leads you to wonder if this could have, or could ever, happen. Sure it's based on Hugo, but it is not as tragic as the book. Although I have not read it, I know what happens at the end, I still want to read it. What you should do if you have not seen this movie, or avoided seeing it or analyzing it for what it is, ask yourself this: If it had been PRECISELY what Hugo wrote, nothing more, nothing less, would it have been any good?

God help this outcast in Disney films. I don't see too many people (besides soundtrack enthusiasts like myself) giving it respect.

Ed, Edd n Eddy (1999–2008)
HILARIOUS! (spoiler of plots from various episodes)
5 November 2002
Warning: Spoilers
This is the most original cartoon I've seen since Garfield. I absolutely love their scams and attempts to be cool and fit in with the others and be trendsetters. A few of my favorite episodes include the one where they open the pet cleaning service, the "luxury cruise," when Eddy loses his voice, the newspaper route (if you look closely you'll see Double D without his hat breifly), and when htey try to become "Urban Rangers." My ultimate favorite is when Eddy and Ed write fake Post-it Notes for Double D. These are just some of my favorites. I liked every single episode I have seen so far. I have many of them on a 6 hour tape (call me crazy). I've never seen a more original show, at least in the toons department.

Pearl Harbor (2001)
Good history, but lacks atmosphere before the attack; something is missing... could it be the music? (spoilers of a Boy Meets World episode)
25 October 2002
Warning: Spoilers
Not that I loath Zimmer's score, I think it was masterful and beautiful, but for a story so similar to Titanic, wouldn't he have thought up some way to really compete with it? The song is nice but doesn't play orchestrally throughout the movie like Titanic, I suppose that's cause he didn't write it.

I like this movie, but only the parts minus the love story.

When I saw this, I wasn't expecting a Titanic ripoff. I was expecting something TRUE. I saw this very same thing (sort of) in a time travel episode of BOY MEETS WORLD. Cory goes off to the war, makes his best friend Shawn promise if he doesn't come back to marry Topanga, then he comes back from the dead so to speak, interrupting the wedding.

For an actor of Cuba's status I was surprised his character wasn't developed more. All that time they spent showing the closeness between the three fictional characters they could have spent on REAL people in Pearl Harbor before the attack, much like Cameron did in Titanic. See my review on that for more insight.

When my mom and stepfather got home from seeing this, I said, "Too bad it wasn't true," and my mom and stepfather were so misled by the love story they couldn't believe it was fiction. The same went for my sister and her husband, and even my brother who is an expert at war movies, ESPECIALLY WWII, was duped, and his girlfriend. What's hilarious is that I am the youngest out of all of them and I knew it was too soapy-Titanic-like to be true.

I don't care for war movies, so I can't really recommend an alternative one to seeing this, but I can advise, SEE THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK. IF HISTORY IS WHAT YOU WANT, JUST WATCH THE ATTACK-THE END. Or perhaps check out some documentaries, or if you are into anything about America's involvement in WWII, watch BAND OF BROTHERS, excellent miniseries from HBO.

It's really a shame that they couldn't find ANYTHING AT ALL that would make the audience "care" for the real people in this event that they had to create FICTIONAL characters instead. Is this what historical filmmaking has been reduced to? Or were they just aching for a hit like Titanic?

25 October 2002
It's "in" to hate this movie for some reason. But I for one have this in my top ten favorite films list. This would be about 9. Here's why.

It's fiction, but everything that happens around the fictional characters is real. Ah, well almost everything. Either fact or legend. A lot of the characters we only catch a glimpse of for one moment are inspired from real photographs and such. It takes a terrible tragedy and makes you care about it, because of the fictional characters, they put you in an atmosphere of what things were like. How they missed this in Pearl Harbor I have no clue. Perhaps they were too busy trying to dupe people into thinking they were real people and not bothering to show what things were like before tragedy struck.

The music in this movie is spoken for, many times in many ways. But it's not just the main theme that is worth talking about; how about when the ship is sinking? And the other various moments in the movie? I've never been scared because of music before but this really scared me during the sinking, in addition to the sights. You know a film is a masterpiece when the theme music is famous worldwide. Think about it: Casablanca, Romeo and Juliet, Psycho, Jaws, Schindler's List, Star Wars, all of these have their notorious themes, and Titanic is no exception.

In conclusion,I recommend this movie to everyone!

I can't recommend this movie to any of my friends, and that's a first.
25 October 2002
Perhaps seeing this a second time in its entirety would help me understand what everyone sees in this "historical" epic.

The first time I watched this, I couldn't believe that I wasn't liking it. I stopped it shortly into the second part and it took me forever to be bored enough to finish it. When it ended, my jaw dropped, and the first thing out of my mouth was "That was stupid!" For such a complex and layered story, I wondered just what was it I didn't understand. Perhaps it was because I wasn't paying attention for the first part and so on. I'll have to watch it again before I can give it a full critique.

Like Casablanca, I thought I knew the story, and didn't. It was terrible, unlike the former. I thought I knew the music, and I did, but when I heard the main theme I wanted to mute the sound, for some reason.

Why do people think this is history? It's like Pearl Harbor and Titanic: fictional love story set in a real life event. For a love story mixed with revolution, read Les Miserables, or perhaps read Pasternak. For those who are into the Russian Revolution as I am, I recommend Rasputin, or read Nicholas and Alexandra; don't waste your time poisoning your mind with the movie. My advice on this one is see it at your own risk. I don't know what everyone sees in it... yet! But perhaps after a second viewing I'll be able to critique it more.

A kiss is still a kiss... a sigh may be just a sigh, but MUSIC MAKES THIS FILM A FILM THAT WILL LIVE IN INFAMY
25 October 2002
For a film that is so highly spoken of I never really was too eager to see it. I suppose it's because of what some would term as "hype" others would term as "overkill." But some would term it as "tribute." Anyway, I didn't feel like it was a must-see. I THOUGHT I knew the story. I didn't. I THOUGHT I knew the lines, I did, I THOUGHT I knew the music, and I did, but only when I see this movie over and over do I begin to appreciate Bergman's acting, Bogie's finesse, and Steiner's music. Ever since I saw "Carrotblanca," I remembered that I should really try to see this one. So at the first opportunity, I bought it, watched it that very night, and unlike Doctor Zhivago, this one actually kept me entertained and sympathized with the characters. It's an amazing story, I'm surprised people have actually thought this was a boring film... though for action-loving dudes on motorcycles in leather and gold chains might find it so.

NO ONE PLAYS IT LIKE SAM! (and Max)

Pocahontas (I) (1995)
The inaccuracy is a con, the astounding animation, music, and voices are all pros to see this movie
16 October 2002
Every other reviewer practically has talked about the historical inaccuracies in the film, so I'm going to spare the readers from that.

It's not a film intended to be for a research history project, it's meant to be a tale of the spirit of who she was. I watched this for the first time in years today, and I analyzed the animation and music for the first time in ages, and realized how superior those things are in this film. When you compare it to other animated films, this one, along with Sleeping Beauty, looks real.

I loved Menken's songs always, but despised most of his scores, particularly Aladdin. This is filled with beautiful drums and trumpets and strings. "Can you paint with all the colors of the wind?" is reminiscent when I think, can you see the images of the movie with just the score, and yes you can. This, as well as Beauty and the Beast and The Hunchback of Notre Dame are his crowning achievements as a score composer.

Sure, it's inaccurate, but so is Anastasia. If you liked that one, you'll like this one. Even if you're like me and have mixed feelings about it, you should give Pocahontas a chance.

AIR IT AGAIN!!! The best telling of the story, next to the musical
14 October 2002
Warning: Spoilers
I am totally surprised that this movie isn't shown anymore, and also surprised that hardly anyone has reviewed this. This is the best I have ever seen from Depardieu, and Malkovich is almost as good as he was in Shadow of the Vampire. The rest of the cast is wonderful.

In terms of story, it's pretty faithful to the book from what I can tell, but unfortunately they do not really go into detail with Eponine's death, but at least they get Gavroche's death right, unlike the terrible Neeson/Rush version.

Hugo would be proud of this one.

Sleepy Hollow (1999)
Burton is magnificent, as is Depp... BUT GIVE ELFMAN HIS CREDIT TOO!!!!
14 October 2002
This is a real masterpiece, and like any masterpiece it would not be the same with a frightening score. Sure, it resembles The Frighteners and Batman, and perhaps a bit of Edward Scissorhands, but James Horner copied Braveheart in Titanic. This score is amazing, in addition to the landscape and scenes, and story elements. I can't imagine any other way to tell this story and make it scary. I was never frightened of the actual Irving tale, I thought it was stupid. But when I saw this, it was wonderful. The more I watch it the better it is. Burton is amazing. Depp was fantastic, but better in The Ninth Gate, the acting was good, and the story was fantastic despite the dialogue/script, but give Elfman some credit, every masterpiece has a masterful score, and this one is it.

Training Day (2001)
I loved it, but it's hard to watch because of the offensive language
14 October 2002
I know that's just part of the realistic atmosphere but still, there was a lot of cursing in there, and I wouldn't let anyone overly religious or conservative watch it, or anyone under the age of 20 and over 50. It is extremely realistic, violent, offensive, and extremely amazing, because of the story, and directing, and Denzel's masterful performance. It's not the thing I usually like, but I saw it and love it still.

NO EPONINE? WHAT ABOUT ENJOLRAS? HE WAS THE REAL LEADER!
14 October 2002
APPALLING!!!!! THIS WAS NOT WHAT HUGO WROTE! HUGO MUST BE ROLLING IN HIS GRAVE. This TOTALLY misses out on his political points! Not to mention the fact this cuts off in the middle of the story, and some events in the movie didn't happen in the book, nor vice versa. Read the book, see/hear the musical, see the Gerard Depardieu version or another version like it (these are the only versions I saw, but an old one put me to sleep, though I don't know which one that was) but skip this one. FOR THE SAKE OF HUGO!

Nosferatu (1922)
If this movie were a talkie it wouldn't be as magnificent!
3 October 2002
I saw Shadow of the Vampire before I saw this one. That movie was the REASON I saw this one. I'm not one for silent movies for some reason though I am starting to explore and open my horizons. It came on Turner Classic Movies and I was stunned. I was aware of the film's reputation long before I even heard of Shadow, and I had seen a tiny clip of it on AMC's tribute to the genre, but overall I had no idea what to expect. I only knew that I had to see it. When I did see it, I was as silent as the fim, and I had to cover up with two or three blankets to keep myself from shivering! This is a must-see for vampire-lovers, filmmakers and students, and actors. And if you've seen Shadow of the Vampire, you may want to see the movie that inspired it, perhaps then you'd understand it better (though I understood it quite well regardless).

Great Performances: Les Misérables in Concert (1995)
Season 24, Episode 10
better than any other musical! and blows Les Mis movies (especially Neeson's) out of the water!
31 August 2002
I never thought I would like Broadway music. I was kind of iffy when I got the International Cast's Highlights for Christmas. I only listened to a few songs. Then I got interested, and saw the 10th anniversary concert on PBS. I was spellbound. Since then I have adored Broadway, but this one has always been and will always be my favorite. I am not drawn to any other musical the way I am to this story of justice, duty, love, redemption, and revolution. If you are a fan of Hugo's book, see it, if you are a fan of Broadway, see it, if you want to see a powerful story in song, see it.

Don't expect 6th Sense in terms of comprehension, but something remarkably close in terms of feeling
5 August 2002
For the record, the movie was great. Not as good as 6th Sense, but definitely close to Unbreakable, if not above it.

No spoilers.

Night has been known now for his ability to create great movies while making great points for discussion (what, you think 6th Sense did not have a purpose?). He is a true writer and intellectual, and THEN a moviemaker. A true writer makes us THINK and DEBATE, and WONDER, and FANTASIZE, and DREAM, about what things would be like IF this happened, IF this were true, IF things went this way instead of that. He's a lot smarter than most people I know (for the record I don't know Night).

The world could be a very interesting place if there were more people who thought like Night and chose to get their thoughts out.

The spiritual message that every review I've read has talked about, I'm not quite sure how to comment. I think it's meant to have us analyze and debate and talk about, long after we leave the theater.

Rasputin (1996 TV Movie)
Inaccurate but magnificent, it actually gets the personalities right!
3 August 2002
Such a miracle, the movie neglects some historical facts in order to get the personalities correct, which is something no other Romanov movie has ever done.

This movie is Alan Rickman's best ever. I always knew he was great but I never imagined him in this role. He was truly amazing.

While other movies paint Aleksey as a suicidal kid this one actually paints him as he was, he must be smiling now that things have finally gotten cleared.

A BIOGRAPHY?!
3 August 2002
Please, this is merely a political viewpoint. The personalities are completely inaccurate, it is nothing worthy of the term "biography."

For the record, Aleksey was NOT monotonous in real life. And most certainly did not try to commit suicide. No wonder the actor hasn't acted in a single thing since!

There is NO EVIDENCE (and never will be) that Tatiana stripped for a Bolshevik (this can be seen on the special edition).

As for the rape thing... it wouldn't surprise me, but I'd believe it if there was proof.

As for Rasputin... Alan Rickman was ten times better.

See Rasputin with Alan Rickman, it is the most accurate (personality-wise) BIOGRAPHY there is on N&A, and OTMA&A.

CRIKEY HE'S NUTS! But that's why I loved it! (includes why this is called Collision Course)
31 July 2002
This movie is not your typical movie, on any level. That's why it's called Collision Course, it collides with all of our typical mainstream ideas of movies. I never watched the show, but thanks to this movie I am now a huge fan and watch the show whenever I can. I like it more than I like the movie, it's because of its weak CIA storyline. Steve, you're just fine in this reviewer's book, don't listen to your critics. You do what you love and you're not ashamed of it.

my rating: 7 out of ten because of the CIA thing.

A review of Tom's acting, and then the rest of the aspects
31 July 2002
Acting-wise, at least in most of his films (Interview With The Vampire, Vanilla Sky, A Few Good Men, and Magnolia are exceptions) he has just been pretending to act like he's in a school play. Vanilla Sky changed my mind about him, not because of the confusing storyline, but because of his amazing acting ability in that. I guess that was just a fluke considering I have seen nothing, acting-wise, to top that performance (Cruise-wise).

But on to the actual movie. This movie's first hour I imagine was to establish premise and characterization. But it doesn't do a good job at either. But the rest of it was absolutely amazing, and spellbinding, mesmerizing, but because of Cruise's poor acting I wouldn't term it as a masterpiece. Effects, cinematography, directing, screenplay, all should be remembered come Oscar time.

7/10 for the long period of nothingness and Cruise's bad acting.

"Bounce spin, to a throw twist, and I catch her?" "Sort of." (hardly)
31 July 2002
Need I say more? OK I'll lay down the line for you.

The romance and comedy are wonderful. The characters and acting are wonderful. The music is great! The skating is great... except the "move."

The move is totally unrealistic. Whose idea was it for them to do a bounce to a throw twist? You can bet it wasn't Cousins! (British Olympic Gold Medalist 1980, who choreographed this entire movie). Such a thing is physically impossible to do! You would have to... well ask any skater you know.

Also, why is it that when naming a girl from Russia, the writers always leave the A out of her last name if it ends in OV? Seems like they should do more research on that I guess.

Lilo & Stitch (2002)
Something for Walt to be proud of, finally
30 July 2002
I like every Disney film I've seen but of course the new classics, The Lion King, Aladdin, and The Little Mermaid have gotten a tiny bit of bad press, and I don't think they're the way Walt would have done them.

This one takes the taco. It's not necessarily better than the three I mentioned, and definitely not better than the ones Walt made, but this one is definitely the one that would have made Walt proudest (except Beauty and the Beast, which I'm sure he was looking down and proud of). I can not think of a time when I did not like any part of this movie. In fact I cried when I saw this with my 11 year old niece, who loved this far more than I did, which is funny cause we don't usually agree on animated films.

One thing I rolled my eyes about was the overkill of pop songs, though the Elvis ones did have relavance to characterization at least. *shrugs* I still prefer score over pop. At least the score was better than Menken's atrocity he calls score (though Hercules is an exception), but I would rather James Newton Howard bring the same score magic he brought to Atlantis and Dinosaur, here. But Silverstn did a better job than expected.

In terms of the movie, plot and characters, just check the other reviews, they say it all!

Spider-Man (2002)
Wonderful, but Kirsten should go back to Interview
28 May 2002
I was never a big fan of Kirsten Dunst, but I did love her performance in Interview With The Vampire. That catapulted her from nobody to somebody, She was MTV's Best Breakthrough Performance, why couldn't she have done the same job here, acting wise?

I loved this movie, and everyone I watched it with also loved it, my bro who read the comics as a kid loved it. He couldn't stop talking about how awesome it was.

Danny Elfman's score could have been better, but it could have been worse too. It should have been something like a cross between Sleepy Hollow, Edward Scissorhands and Batman. Oh well, it's still a pretty good one.

Some trivia for the reviewers. Spiderman was completed BEFORE 9/11. BUT the ending had to be reshot, because it ended with the bad guy getting caught in a web BETWEEN THE WORLD TRADE CENTER TOWERS. I found the Goblin's attack on NYC chilling, and realistic, as it should have been I suppose. After all, what makes a good villain? Evil plan, evil deeds, evil laughter evil voice. A villain has a commanding presence on the screen, or wherever you encounter one. He/she makes you hate him/her, fear him/her, wish he/she were dead in a terrible way.

Being an aspiring writer, I can say that it could have been better written, I found for example Tobey's ranting about how great Kirsten was when her eyes, blah blah blah, very dull, partially because he wasn't acting very well, and partly because writing-wise it was ranting.

Overall though, it is the best comic book movie I've ever seen, some of the shots did make it look like it was indeed from the comic. Loved it, can't wait for the sequel(s).

8/10

drawbacks: Kirsten should take lessons from Brad again. Elfman should go back to what he really did best, the writers should take some classes. Also, some may find (understandably) that the attacks by the Goblin a little too close to home, though my brother was fairly close to the crash in Somerset and he didn't seem bothered by that part in the movie.

pros: awesome special effects, great acting from Dafoe and Maguire, wonderful direction and cinematography, little swearing (when taking a kid to see a movie, or even an old person, this is important to me, to be able to tell a great story with as little cursing as possible), and a great moral.

Original, I think. Not as unique as other S&S movies, but I loved it
21 May 2002
I didn't expect anything from this movie, despite all the hype it had. Since I expected nothing, I hoped I would not be let down by anything. However before I saw the movie I saw the soundtrack available to buy, and as I looked to see who composed the score I recieved a shock. There WAS no composer on the soundtrack, only today's hit heavy metal and rap songs. I had seen the preview for the movie on The Mummy Returns, and was excited about it ever since. When I saw the soundtrack all my hopes were dashed. I kept thinking "Please don't pull 'A Knight's Tale' on me." Well the movie finally came out and I went to see it. I kept praying that they wouldn't pull the crazy Knight's Tale on me, and I was not disappointed with that, rather pleased. The score was amazing, and I wonder, why did the soundtrack execs choose not to have any of it on CD?

But enough about that, let's move on to other aspects.

The acting was so-so, but the Rock clearly took the taco on good acting. I wouldn't nominate him for an Oscar or anything, but he was still good. Better than some of the reviews believe. The movie reminded me of Braveheart in its storyline for some reason. I'm not quite sure why, perhaps that it was supposed to have tragically ended with the hero dying. Thankfully it was not so tragic. I found Matthaius's sidekick absolutely hilarious. His voice reminded me of Hank Azaria in The Mummy, which he also used the same voice in Anastasia. The scorcoress really stole the show next to The Rock. I loved her acting. I was rather confused as to how they would present the Scorpion King's storyline from the Mummy Returns, and was disappointed a little that it had no relevance to it. Overall though, plot-wise, score-wise, acting-wise, set-wise, I loved it.

As I said in a previous review, the first S&S movie I ever saw was Red Sonja, and I loved it. This one blew it away.

Anastasia (1997)
ALEXANDRA WOULD BE APPALLED!
21 May 2002
Had the real people involved in the real tragedy somehow been able to see this...

Alexandra would be "APPALLED." (that was her favorite word it seems to scold her impish Anastasia and Aleksey)

Nicholas would be INFURIATED.

Olga and Tatiana would be SHOCKED that this received such praise.

Marie would love the romantic aspect of it, bless her flirtatious heart.

Anastasia would probably find it funny.

Aleksey would most likely have mixed emotions.

Had either of the latters miraculously survived as some believe, if they ever saw this they would proabaly burst into tears in the revolution part.

I, however, loved this movie, when it first came out. The more I look into the lives of the real people, the more I am ashamed to watch this. I have not watched the movie in its entirety for about two years. And I don't want to. Worth the money I paid for it, yes. Score and songs are awesome. But the historical inaccuracies and the fact that it's aimed at 4 year olds disturb me. The real Romanovs, at least the adults, would be appalled.

Some movies are art, some are entertainment, some a little mix of both. This I just consider entertainment, a distraction from the real world's troubles. But the character of Rasputin was unnecessary.

Red Sonja (1985)
I enjoyed it
21 May 2002
The movie came out when I was three, so of course I didn't see it then. I saw it on TV when I was about seven, up late and bored. Unfortunately I kept coming into the middle of it, every time it came on. Finally one day I saw the entire thing, and adored it. I was about thirteen. A few years ago I had the fortune of finding it on video for a cheap price, $6.95. I watched it a lot, and loved it every time. This was a very unique movie, to me. It was the first Swords and Scorcery flick I ever saw, and ever since I fell in love with the genre. Fans of medieval, fantasy, adventure movies will have to check this one out, if they haven't already.
