Reference to Duel
11 June 2022
As mentioned buy another reviewer, there is a good reference to Spielberg's film Duel (with Dennis Weaver) that came out a couple of years before this episode. The scene with the truck driver chasing Jim in the blue Pontiac Astre. I remember watching this series on TV as a kid, but appreciate the humor much more now. All though campy in some ways, it is much better than the canned, formula based schlock that is on now. Plus the images of a much simpler Malibu and SoCal are nostalgic.

Another 'sort of' reference is the underwater angle of the dead man in the pool, that was reminiscent of a scene in the 1971 Bond movie, Diamonds are Forever.

Lovely movie, visually stunning, unnecessary Hollywood fluff towards the end weakened it.

Warning: Spoilers
This was a nice Sunday afternoon watch. The plot was not very plausible, but suspending belief, the isolation and barren landscape was filmed exquisitely and the director would do well sticking to documentaries. I enjoyed the movie even when the story line failed with unbelievable details like how she fires a rifle, drives the snowmobile (where did the fuel come from), etc. But started to lose interest towards the end when the younger girl got on the radio and the older sister didn't grab it and speak to the listening station. The second polar bear scene and the fall through the ice were pointless and weakened the movie as did the sappy ending.

Good on ya mate!

Don't get the negative comments from some here, this is much better than most of the stuff on Netflix imo. It is far less meandering than Homeland (which had a few good seasons) and the story line is structured and characters persona's are very obviously developed (as per the investigation). Having been to Alice Springs twice recently, and meeting fellow Americans who worked at the facility, and also seeing it from the plane, the series does seem on point, if not exactly coreect on every technical detail. The shots of Alice Springs, Anzac Hill and some of the natural geological sites that they visit (Standley Chasm and Simpson Gap) lend authenticity to the local. I do hope that they continue with this series as it has legs. If you want more Aussie thrillers try Secret City and the movies Mystery Road and it's sequel Goldstone. Crushed is also worth noting.
