Capone (2020)

Just Because....
15 June 2020
...You didn't get what you expected doesn't mean you shouldn't appreciate what you got. This film will be a classic once the myopia of the present is put to rest by the passage of time. The film is a phenomenal study of the physical and mental deterioration of one of the most powerful men ever. Not a pretty film by any means and it's not for the quick cut crowd; careful attention is needed to follow the constantly changing mental worlds of Capone. If there were only a "heavier" cause for his situation, Capone would be a modern day Lear. Kudos to all for a fantastic film, most especially of course, to Mr. Hardy who turns in a bravura performance.

Dumbo (2019)

Burton NOT
9 August 2019
Looked forward to this version of Dumbo but sorely disappointed. I guess the more sophisticated can pick out Burton style but I think virtually any other director could have done as well...maybe better. As others have noted, DeVito steals the show pretty much making the rest of the cast look "cardboardy". The kids, especially the girl character, were not in the Disney tradition. Add to this obvious predictability and dullsville begins to loom large. But Disney doesn't care. It didn't make it's money back domestically but did very well thanks to non US viewers and that bottom line will keep Disney going screwing over the classics.

Not Great, Not Even Close
15 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
An old hag takes out her personal demons on the hapless residents of a small town. There is so much wrong with this film it boggles the mind. The most notable errors are red herrings and smoking guns. Red herring majorly: the "rapist" scenes. What the? Who the? Smoking Gun majorly: the packet on the road after the explosion. Where the? Other major problems: crazy swearing in front of kids. What the? Sheriff never talked to her? What the? To make the point: cut out all footage of Willoughby. What is lost? Letters? One that even begets a "conversion"? Not going to continue on; others that think this is one huge overrated film have done the detail work justifying the observation. An old hag takes out her personal demons on the hapless residents of a small town and is lucky they don't kill her.

Pointless
20 January 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This is a movie wherein much is put in by film judges and critics that is simply not there. Those who find "stuff" name off basically the usual pretentious leftist pablum. No better example than Prize of the Ecumenical Jury - Special Mention drivel "For its prophetical stance on the world of work and its sharp reflection on our tacit complicity in the inhumane logics of merchandising." Say what??? No, I'm not interested in prices going up just to fund some clerk's druggy son or because somebody needs a DVD fix. And I'll exercise my own freedom when it comes to loyalty points. To nominate this film for the Krzysztof Kieslowski Award is a travesty on that great director's work. This is a movie only a Bernie Sanders could like.

Full of Sound and Fury...
2 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
...and you know the rest and that fits this movie perfectly. Of course, the sound and fury is only from the pounding music which, in the end, is the film for the story itself is so trivial while managing to be full of inanities and contradictions. The list is long but we'll just throw a few examples of each...

  • a less than worthless physicist (at least Mr. Renner got more exposure) - an explosion that doesn't hurt humans but kills off Abbot behind a shield - a race intelligent enough to conquer space, time, and gravity yet cannot decipher our language - apparently more intelligent "agents" in other countries who learned Something more than we did - the lamest of excuses for a break-up - the giant biggggg plot hole of the "benefit" of "learning" Hepatodism; or, a race intelligent enough to conquer space, time and gravity and yet expecting a gift they should be able to use on their own that will survive for 3,000 years to return to save them (hope Louise lasts that long 'cause she's the only gifted one)

It is nonetheless an amazing movie; amazing that so many feel they got so much out of so little. And indeed, it does compare to Close Encounters of the Confused Kind. Only the musical score gets credit; since any rating higher than a star could be mistakenly applied to the film, well, my apologies to Jóhann Jóhannsson. P.S. I don't mind slow movies -- when they have something to say.

Hidden Gem
26 October 2016
This is one of those movies that suffers from...lack of marketing. Maybe it made the Laemmle rounds, I don't know but if not, it sure should have. It will, of course, scare away a certain class of people who will not want to hear the harsh reality of living in certain cities and their domains. This is also one of those movies that nail the case for story and character both of which are in abundance in this film. (BTW, the tech specs say it was shot on a GH4 which is certainly capable of a much better image; I suspect the filmmakers wanted the look the movie has and I have to agree: I'm not sure brilliant colors would work.) The two main characters have relatively limited experience but are a phenomenal duo here. The twists and turns are well motivated as is the red herring in the character of Rio. Highly recommended if you are in the mood for a gritty well done exchange of viewpoints.

Wow!
21 August 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Stumbled on this gem somehow. As others have already noted, beautifully photographed. A tricky job of balancing everything to stay on point, not fall into melodrama, and present a meaningful story. There were a couple of flaws. Biggest flaws the easy predictability in a key scene. Second biggest flaw is why the letters stopped coming. There is, of course, a key scene that might explain this but the suddenness catches the view off guard. Actors did a superb job and music choices were spot on. Contrary to other views, the length, give the material, was about right. The only alteration might have been more/different letters but the point was made. Highly recommended if you haven't seen it even though it's been out for a while.

Brilliant, Simply Brilliant
5 July 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This is one of those movies where, as in the phrase of William Friedkin, the movie gods were fully present; maybe much more than just the movie gods! Anyway, we have here a brilliant idea from Paul Aiello on how to approach the events of Easter, a brilliant production designer, a brilliant cast (Fiennes was a real find as was Felton as was Firth as was.....), beautiful cinematography, excellent direction, wonderful music and on and on. All these pieces - and all the rest that are required to pull off excellence - came together to make an exciting movie that is out of the ordinary for its genre. This will become a classic period. Nothing's perfect but the minor flaws are totally overwhelmed by the sheer power of the production. Fortunately, as is the case with many a movie, the critics were far off base with basically cynical, ho hum views while the audience ratings showed true appreciation for its achievement. P.S. It wears very, very well after multiple viewings.

Sunk So Low
14 January 2016
No, there are no spoilers in this short review. I have not the slightest idea how one would insert a spoiler for this movie. Tarantino's been on a revamp of late. Starting with Inglorious Basterds (a sorry revamp of the great original), wandering through Django Unchained (ditto), and, we hope, ending with Hateful Eight (sorry play on Magnificent Seven in title) he seeks to put his own spin on the greats of the past. While there is some stuff of interest in IB and DU, he sinks to a new low with Hateful Eight surpassing his penchant for violence as a moviemaker. However, in that sense, it is of his path of escalating violence in movie after movie; thus does dear Quentin ride the rim of paradox: escalation to a new low.

Agree With Those Who Didn't Get It
12 December 2015
Critics went gaga. Some reviewers went gaga. Rented the movie based on gagaisms. Still trying to figure out why all the gaga. There are many slow movies that actually say something but this does not fall into that category. The movie is "held together" by the thinnest of "plots" providing an excuse to cruise Vienna in the wintertime (and totally discourage anyone from going there that time of year!) and cruise the KMS. Yes, it's nice that a friendship develops but we got that early on. It's fun to hear the museum guard reminisce about his job; at least there was some variety. As another reviewer has said, the most interesting part was the tour guide's observations and her rather snooty way of saying she was right even though she stated it was an "opinion". I guess "mesmerizing" has a new meaning: "challenges one to stay awake".

Noir Like Never Before
12 December 2015
Now here is a slow moving movie with heart offering a distinctly creative turn in the noire genre. It's also a risk taker in that it may be a tough sell to believe a ruthless tough guy could develop a "soft side" and likewise that a victim could turn to love same said ruthless tough guy. It's a movie that requires a bit of thought to connect the dots and see whether you are convinced that the filmmaker succeeded in this ambitious and complex endeavor. While I admit I'm have some doubts about that, especially the victim turned lover side, it was an enjoyable watch in large part because one is led along by suspense that never culminates in the traditional way. Very much worth a watch unless you are expecting "traditional" mafia movie treatment.

Great Documentary
11 February 2015
Perhaps lost in translation but this film is basically a documenting of a day in the life of a family. The closest we get to any impact of the somewhat illustrated stress of that living (and what's unique about that?) is when mom looks like she might, just might, lose it. A plus though is the "feeling European" that comes through in mannerism and relationship. I grabbed it because it was my understanding that Bela Tarr was involved; turns out, he was, but in a relatively minor way (workshop, not class)that this film cannot be considered being done by one of his students. So count me among those who saw the film to the end but in the end, came away unimpressed. Unfortunately, the extras were a big disappointment shedding light only on the "source basis" for the film

Interstellar (2014)

Not Stellar, Not Even Close
11 January 2015
Take the nonsense of Inception, multiply by about 1000, add some soap opera moments and you get Interstellar. I don't have to check the spoiler box because there is nothing to spoil, or, rather, there is everything...to spoil. But there isn't time enough to call out the instances of bad dialog, poor acting, lousy hair jobs, words strung together that sound interesting but mean nothing, contradictions galore, real black holes (aka plot holes), one liners designed to emotionally hook the audience 'cause there ain't no substance, visuals to distract 'cause there ain't no substance, deus ex machinas as needed (and they are too frequently needed), etc. and so on, oh, did I mention bad evil mixing?. And for those of you whiners about "hate", no, this isn't about "hate"; it's about the lack of sound movie making. The only "sound" movie making principle followed is...you get a hap hap happy Hollywood ending. In sum, a Shakespearean epitaph is appropriate: full of sound and fury signifying nothing. P.S. I did enjoy the music but, my bad, could've gotten that for a lot less investment of time and money.

The Rover (2014)

Aussies Score!
8 January 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Clearly from the reviews here at least, some got it, some didn't. Some can handle slow burning fuses, some can't but that's why there are a lot of movies: something for everyone. (As an example, I thoroughly disliked the Giver and, like another reviewer here, listed at least 25 points where the movie, like the book, totally failed to sell.) At least there is pretty much agreement across these lines as to the excellent acting. Robert Pattinson proves here he has real acting chops. Yes, there are one or two weak spots but the story overall is a masterpiece in the study of the dehumanization of man on the one hand and yet the possibility of a friendship in a hostile world. The real ending of the movie occurs before the final scene and a bit of time is required to realize this. And when once realized, the truth of the statement "it's the journey not the destination" applies to this film and makes its theme crystal clear. The Rover is a good enough reason for some of us to go to the movies.

Good Action Flick w/Interesting Characters
3 September 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Went on a whim and was well rewarded. Film starts out with a real bang (pun intended) and keeps on going. Yes, there are a couple of slow moments but overall it delivers. Character development well done within the action genre; especially liked the transition team idea and it was well done. Stallone, as Barney, pokes fun at his age as well as the other members of his team; nobody is safe from that problem! If you are aware of certain personal issues with certain of the actors, the double meaning in some of their lines is an added bonus (one hint: Ford's character in answering Barney's question). In addition to being a good action movie, the film "resurrects" some good old acting skills from Snipes, and especially Gibson and Banderas. Worth seeing for those characters alone. Highly recommended and no, you really don't need 1 or 2 to enjoy.

Most People Hit It: Competent, Not Great
3 March 2014
Warning: Spoilers
***Spoilers But Necessary for Support of Statements*** Those who criticize the movie because of geologic inaccuracy (you know, fire bomb complaints, tsunami complaints, gee, where's Herculaneum) clearly miss the point of movie-making. If you want geologic accuracy, take up the History or Discovery channels. Since the movie by and large is scientifically accurate, a few fire bombs and a gigundo tsunami for effect are more than tolerable; they're great visuals. The movie excels in its depiction of the city and in the special effects. Acting is so-so following a so-so script which has a couple of moments. I'll give the story writers credit for trying to create a somewhat unusual situation; starting a Pompeii movie in Britain takes one aback initially. I was surprised that the movie was historically accurate in representing tension between the Romans and the Pompeiians. With a better script and better acting, this would have been a first rate ride.

One Of The Best
13 February 2012
Other reviews have more than adequately covered the excellence in this film. There are only a couple of observations to be made that will, hopefully, distinguish this review from being simply a rehash. I don't hold with the blithe accusation of the Mac character as being a 'racist'. After all, his son was killed by a black person so of course he's going to have strong feelings about that especially give the very strong memories that he carried for Toby years after his death. Whatever feelings there might be re "race", they played a far distant second fiddle to this. The second item of note is that the movie was shot on a Red camera! This digital beauty shows how far things have come in the digital age: it isn't obvious that this is a digitally based production. Finally, special nod needs to be given to the, yup, special features. The "making of" is itself a mini drama and Memphis is to be heartily congratulated for its unusual support, dedication and just plain unselfish giving.

A Must See For Anyone Liking Most Excellent Drama and Acting!!
13 January 2011
No surprise that such a movie would be made outside the studio system. Innumerable surprises from virtually perfect casting and top notch A++ acting throughout. Garcia's script deftly treats of the psychological brokenness of its characters - and most are broken to varying degrees. But despite all of that, the characters' struggle to continue on, to not give up, to be open and willing to try things (even Karen eventually writes a letter) is totally believable because it happens with the influence of another. As a result, healing does occur but also in varying degrees. This is not to say that a perfect world emerges from the characters' struggles: far from it. It merely says that in this imperfect world it is possible to not fall into the murk of despair as long as the human spirit retains and acts on what is best in what could be called its primal drives. (While Garcia possibly attempts to "inform" these drives with a Higher, Outside Existence, it is one of the weak points of the film as, in the end, there is no real connection. Perhaps he intended that there not be an overt relationship which, if so, is a subtly that would be difficult for virtually any audience to grasp.) Kudos to the courageous production companies that went out on a limb to help make this film. It's a shame that a studio level marketing budget isn't possible for a many levels above studio production. Highly recommended for those inclined to view excellent: drama, acting, directing and storytelling.

Inception (2010)
5/10
OverRated
21 August 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Inception is, simply, overrated. It defies the long standing approach of show don't tell; of course it must tell, otherwise, the viewer would be even more lost. And of course, when it comes to action, it is all show just like any good action movie. In fact, Inception is nothing but an action movie wrapped in some philosophical stuff about dreams. There is, of course, real ingenuity in some of the action scenes especially those place in a zero gravity situation. Nolan was simply lucky in having an action movie released during a time when there wasn't really much competition and audiences were clearly hungry for something better. Nolan was even luckier having Hans Zimmer for Mr. Zimmer keeps suspense alive during the many long scenes of exposition. The real theatrical breakthrough lies in the film's using the telling part (hugely aided by Hans' music) to sustain interest and some suspense which are then fulfilled in the showing part. It is quite amazing that the film did so well at the BO; there are really no characters to sympathize with or to particularly care about. As to plot, the payoff for the many pangs of Cobb's conscience is indeed worthwhile. While many seem to think the film will have considerable longevity, it will fade quite quickly when considered outside of its lucky time slot.

A Perfectly Worthless Use of Time
24 November 2002
Critics raved but had nothing to say - not a bloomin' one of 'em - of substance about why they thought this was such a great film. Yeah, I checked here & RottenTomatoes before this post just to be sure I didn't miss "the point". Made me feel good 'cause I thought it sucked...big time. Road trip? Sex orgy for sure, "road trip" flimsy excuse for it, at best. Learn anything from the "sights"? Nope, missed it all. Deal with cancer? No life change here, just the statement that since there is nothing after death why bother with such trivia. No, leaving hubby ain't a life change, just cowardice. (BTW, this single event highlights the problem with the film that repeats endlessly, i.e. what evidence is there that he deserved such treatment? The opinions of two adolescent booby bumbling drug soaked hormone ravaged teens? This is supposed to make us sympathetic with the anti-heroine?? It's one thing to see life, events, situations interpreted by the protagonists and quite another to have those interpretations foisted on and be explanatory of another character's behavior. Can be done but only by an experienced master.) Want to see the utter banality of materialistic modern civilization? Want to see a wife who cannot communicate anything to her husband? (Hey, he may be drunk when he calls but he went way beyond her lack of verbal interaction.) Want to see promises that are lies even as they are being made? Want to see the acclaimed "two Mexicos"? Duh, every country has at least "two". And far better drug busts can be seen on TLC or Discovery or... Want to see infidelity at every turn? Want to see two realities running in parallel but never meeting? You know, the reality of the world presented by the unknown but omniscient narrator and the other one already fully adjectived. Want to see the film 99% critics pander to what they think will be PC? Then see this film. Shame on you Mexico for pandering to American tastes and aiming for one-upmanship on tripe. You succeeded. P.S. the one positive point, if it can be called such, was the hugely clear gulf between parents and offspring. Positive in that it showed how little parents often know what their kids are really doing or understand their kids or take any time to learn. Negative in that it was done in the same trite manner as the `political commentary'.
