What happened?
22 June 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I anticipated the release of this movie for a long time. I really enjoyed Alien and Aliens and was looking forward to his one by Ridley Scott, who directed one of my favorite movies Blade Runner. With that being said i must way I hated this film for so many reason I needs to use bullet point but won't.

SPOILERS: THE film starts out good enough, interesting landscapes, great picture quality, and a great performance by Fassbender (droid) alone on the ship for two years learning about various civilizations. The movie starts to go go downhill within 10 minutes unfortunately.

The most annoying aspect of the film is the behavior of the characters. The droid has malicious intent unlike in previous franchise films, and poisons someone just to see what happens. Half of the crew are not introduced, and the half that are are limited to only speaking a couple of lines.

Once inside the alien vessel/structure all of a sudden it is OK to take off your helmets in a strange new world. The android is all of a sudden an expert in how to open doors and use their weird control pads. LETS BRING NO WEAPONS OF ANY KIND TO THIS STRANGE ALIEN STRUCTURE. Holograms from the eighties just pop up of giant guys running for their lives. By the way, huge baby-face giants are not scary, neither are tiny squids that can be born 10 hours after conception. They take samples and never really examine them, except for the large head they decide to re-animate for the hell of it. Oh yea, heads explode for no given reason. So is it an infection?

Is it worm like things that grow out of the ground? Does the infection make human heads explode or turn you into a baby-face giant engineer guy? Two dudes get lost, come across a worm like thing, and decide it is best to pet it like it was a cat or something. This is despite these two guys were the cowards leaving early in the initial exploration. Oh yea, the captain abandons the monitor of them in order to bang Theron, who is merely eye candy in the film. There are also two co-pilots, one of which is Benedict Wong who was great in Sunshine, but all their dialogue relates to a stupid bet. There are also a bunch of mercenaries on board, and you never know what happens to the last two. One minute three of them are helping Mr Weyland, the next minute two of them are never seen again. What is with Guy Pierce doing small roles in films? (The Road, Hurt Locker, etc) Why not just get a genuine old guy to play the part? The main female lead escapes the other scientists to have her alien baby removed. She survives this graphic ordeal and NOBODY chases or looks for her. She just re-joins the crew LIKE NOTHING HAPPENED and nobody says, "hey what happened to the baby?" "You had the machine cut it out of you?" This would be a major interest for scientists but I guess this crew thinks it is NO BIG DEAL.

There was no sense of dread, thrill, or excitement to be had watching this film. She gives birth to a squid, the squid becomes a giant face-hugger like thing, attacks the giant baby-face guy, and this giant guy has a traditional alien explode out of him. There is no real ACTION sequences. The most climatic thing is when the one scientist asks Theron to burn him, oh wait that was not exciting either.

Another ridiculous thing is when two co-pilots just volunteer to die to pilot a craft into the aline vessel that is leaving. Like the captain wasn't enough. IT ISN'T LIKE THE SHIP COULD FLY ITSELF AT ALL. Is there anything like cruise control or targeting of any kind, let say after 2089?. Lets lift our hands up and gladly die to crash this spaceship. As Hudson would say, "you can count me out!" Woops I assumed this movie would be intelligent to a certain degree and I was dead wrong.

Wow, long review. Rent this one if you are curious but not worth the hype. 4/10 due to Fassbender performance and great special effects.

Not bad at all
15 March 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I bought this DVD prior to watching given the fact that it is difficult to find and all of the Blockbuster locations are closing. I read many reviews prior to buying the film.

This was a very good movie considering the budget the director had to work with. I was impressed with the action sequences and creature effects. The title does not really described this movie and neither does the front cover of the DVD. Most of the characters are played by relatively unknown actors ( aside from the African American cop from Six Feet Under series) but they all do a decent job.

Definitely worth checking out or buying on Amazon.

Grab your gun and a plate of cheese
14 March 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I saw this film a couple of days ago and must say that I was very disappointed. Every cliché in the book is used in this movie and there were no surprises to be had. Zero character development. The first twenty minutes or so attempts to do this but fails miserably. I did not care about any of the characters and was hoping that they would be killed an hour into the film so I could go home.

First of all Michelle Rodriguez needs to hire a new agent as she is always playing the same butch, tough, and manly female army/marine/SWAT character. As soon as she appeared I almost laughed out loud because I swear she has said the same dialogue in other movies. Speaking of dialogue, there is an extreme cheese factor here and many laughable moments. "I would go to hell and back for you sir." Lol the best is when Aaron Eckhart recites the serial numbers of his fallen soldiers and then all of a sudden his marines respect him, like that makes everything okay. And how do they find the command center? I think the use of military lingo is an attempt to dupe the audience in to believing there is some depth and intelligent screen writing, which there is isn't. This is very PG-13 film and it shows in the script and lack of violence.

I will say that the special effects and some of the action sequences are done well.

I give this film 5/10. Play call of duty instead or go to the marine recruitment center nearest you. Call of duty characters are at least more real believable compared to Ne-Yo and the wooden characters in Battle LA,

Pretentious garbage
29 November 2010
It has been awhile since I wrote a review on IMDb. After watching this awful film I felt the urge to warn society. First of all, I respect the work of Phoenix and Affleck, having enjoyed many of their movies, but this was an ridiculous waste of time. I do not judge actors based and their personal lives. I do not care about what Tom Cruise is doing with his personal life after his movies, for example. What I do care about is people attempting to dupe others into believing something that is not real, stealing their money, stating it was a hoax after the fact, and trying to pass it off as "art." It must be nice to be a young successful actor and be able to make a movie with zero plot, meaning, or point. This was the brain child of two relatives who were stoned out of their minds. "I'm tired of being famous and interviews." Boo hoo you rich and famous jerks. All of our "preconceptions" are true when it comes to you guys (watch movie). This film defeats its purpose and is pretentious, and I never use that word unless absolutely necessary. If anything this movie exhibits how far one can go in life, no matter what the venture, based on status and wealth alone. Avoid this movie like the plague.

2 out of 10 merely because the vintage film of the Phoenix family was interesting.

Carriers (2009)
9/10
Seek this one out
13 March 2010
Carriers is one of those films that succumbed to poor advertising and promotional funding and this is why it has unfortunately been overlooked by most of the movie-going public. (See Stephen Kings review online) I am an avid film fan and I must say that this was a terrific surprise amongst many awful films in this genre that have come out lately. This film follows a small group of survivors trying to avoid falling ill to a global disease at all costs.

Do not go into this movie expecting non-stop action, gore, or brainless sexualized violence. Instead expect creative/intelligent storytelling, suspense, and a unique look into what one will do to survive. This is a thinking persons movie and is a study of what one would do under extreme life or death circumstances. What would a real human being do? What is more important self preservation or risking your life for others? This is by far the best performance given by Chris Pine, and the supporting cast is also excellent. Finally a movie with an ending that is believable and may go against what many movie-goers would expect. If you liked 2012 this is not the movie for you. 9/10.

Go Rent this movie
12 March 2010
I will not spoil this movie for anybody...

I went to the theater alone (not the type of flick my GF would want to see) expecting a mediocre sci-fi movie. I was wrong. I must say I was pleasantly surprised in every way. First of all, Don't let the casting of Dennis Quad discourage you from watching this film because his role is minor and Ben Foster is amazing. Secondly, The set design, plot, lighting, and character development is great and this movie sucks you in and will leave you thinking about it later. I really enjoy when a director and his crew take the time to construct REAL sets/backgrounds as opposed to all the CGI used today. The acting was above average and the creature designs were very believable, not campy or corny. It is too bad this movie did not get the promotional funding it deserved as it would probably made more money at the box office and spawned sequels. Like I said, I will not spoil this movie in any way for anyone. It has been a few years since I last commented on a movie and this one felt worth the effort. Go rent this one, but your GF may not like it! 8/10.

Give it a chance
1 February 2008
I will not spoil the movie for anyone. I watched this film last night. This is a film that is worth renting and watching. It has a Donnie Darko flavor to it and is very interesting. The script is solid and very intelligent, as well as the acting. There are three different movies all linking up into one movie about creation in my opinion. All three films contain the same characters, it is just that the roles interchange and do not make sense until the end of the movie. The film begins as almost a comedy and turns into a thriller so just be aware of this and do not get turned off too early. I give this a 7 (as opposed to 9) for a truly unique film with a solid cast. This one is worth renting.

Finally a real action movie
26 January 2008
I just had a chance to see this film this afternoon. I have to say, this is one of the best action movies I have seen in the last 10 years. This is a refreshing return to real action and violence that is not shy by any means. I was impressed with the action sequences and revenge factor. And the ending was great as well. The mercenaries were great, especially the guy with the huge friggin sniper rifle. I will try not to ruin the movie for anyone. Great job Sly. I give this 10/10 (for a strictly ACTION film). This will not wins Oscars but it was entertaining. This was a great movie and I hope you make more films or maybe even a sequel Sly??

Undead (2003)

A respectable Zombie flick.
25 January 2008
I purchased this film without even seeing it (and this is rare for me). I was not disappointed at all. This is a great little zombie movie with plenty of humor in the mix. It is basically about a small town that gets bombarded with a strange kind of meteor shower which infects the residents and turns them into, you guessed it, flesh eating zombies. The survivors find that there is no way to exit the town (a nice visual touch), and that the constant rain actually burns their skin. The survivors find shelter in a home, basement, etc and their is definite ode to Romero films. The special effects were great considering the budget, and the story has a nice twist in the end. I hope they make a sequel as this movie would suggest. I will definitely be seeing the directors next film. I give this film 7/10.

A pretty good movie
25 January 2008
This review may contain spoilers.

I saw this film the other day and I must say that I was pleasantly surprised. This is a really solid film that keeps you interested throughout. Josh Brolin and Tommy Lee Jones are superb. Next time I watch it I will try to pay more attention to Tommy Lee Jones though as he tends to go off on tangents during the movie. Great style, use of the musical score, and the element of suspense. I do have one issue with the film which is why I gave it 7/10 as opposed to 9/10. I was disappointed with the last half hour. The viewer becomes so immersed in the main character and following his story, only to be cheated in the end in my opinion. I won't go in to details as to ruin the film, but I must say that I was pretty upset about this. Aside from that, the film was awesome in my opinion. 7/10.

average zombie flick IF you can get past the deviant sexual content
23 January 2008
I will keep this short and simple. I am a HUGE zombie genre fan. This movie is actually pretty average if you can get past the inappropriate sexual references and content during the first half of the movie. I and I mean I actually thought of turning the rental DVD off twice during the first hour. The one female character actually made me feel like a sicko just watching this. Please for the love of god give me the budget for this movie and I would make something a hell of a lot better. Anyways, this movie is and looks like a TV movie except it has content that would never be allowed on TV. This has to be ten lines so I will continue. Rent this if you are really curious as it will never be on TV, but this is not a gem by any means. I give this movie 4 out of 10.

I will keep this review short
15 January 2008
This is one of those films that you watch and contemplate later in your life. As far as losing someone you love, and how that effects every major decision you will ever make for the rest of your life, this film is the most realistic portrayal I have ever seen. Billy Crudup was meant to play Fielding in this movie. This movie is haunting and is just one of those little movies that falls through the cracks but is never forgotten. A stunning movie directing by none other than the director of A Midnight Clear, another terrific film. If you are reading this you should seek out this movie or just buy it online. I give Waking the Dead 9/10.

A very smart take on a difficult subject
15 January 2008
The film is a great study of what it is to be completely isolated from mankind. 8 crew members are sent on a mission to re-ignite the sun and "create a star within a star." It is very realistic and modest in its portrayal of the crew in that nearly half the crew are of Asian decent, and the break down of the others is very believable. The visuals are superb, and the chemistry between actors is wonderfully reflected in the film. One can really imagine these people living with each other for an extended amount of time. I especially enjoyed the emotions studied in the film such as guilt and desperation. There is one character in the film (try not to spoil much) who is so full of guilt that he actually has to be treated by the Psych officer on board the ship, which it would be completely believable that one would be needed. I also enjoyed the fact that some of the crew show their real animal instinctual side i.e. the Comm's Officer. He was actually my favorite character and struck me as the most "real" as far as the gravity of the crew's dire situation. You will see what I mean after watching the film. IN all honesty, the first half was my favorite, but the ending did not bother me, and it was a very beautiful way to end the film. I give this film 8/10.

Death Proof (2007)
Not that great
9 January 2008
I am a huge fan on this guy's films but in my opinion this film was not very good. Planet Terror was a great campy gore fest but this film had WAY too much talking and no real point. It's starts off alright getting to know the girl victims and the whole Friday the 13th bit on going to the lake etc. I think I know what the director was trying to do but I personally thought it was boring. There was a cool car crash scene like 45 minutes in, and the whole concept of the car Kurt Russell drives and the way in which he kills was cool (only used once though), it's just the viewer is literally forced to listen to a bunch of chicks talk tough and BS all day. I don't know, I feel kind of bad about how negative this review is but it is true. Is it worth to watch? Maybe. I suggest watching it BEFORE Planet Terror to save the best for last. I will give this one 4.5/10.

A little annoying, but a surprisingly solid film.
24 May 2004
I stayed up until nearly 1:00 AM watching this film on IFC. This film started off pretty slow, and the constant narratives bothered me a little, but overall this is a good film. The last 45 minutes or so makes up for the beginning, and the comedy and suspense is quite impressive. Worth seeking out for sure. I just wish that this film was adequately funded, as to avoid the cheap feel to it. I was also impressed with the bullet wound effects, which looked very real and convincing. I also liked the actor who played Walt Whitman. He was cast perfectly, in my opinion. I wish that this film was for sale or something. If you happen to see this on IFC you should check it out and be patient. 3 stars.

An average Sci-fi movie with an ode to BLADE RUNNER IN IT.
18 April 2003
This movie is absolutely average in every way, yet it was interesting enough for me to stay entertained throughout. Most interestingly, there are a few comments and visuals in this film that relate to the 1983 sci-fi classic Blade Runner. Check it out!

8 April 2003
This movie is bad, I mean really bad. I don't care what the director has currently accomplished. I am all for cult classics and old movies which are GOOD, but this one isn't. I need one more sentence even though this movie isn't worth the effort. Sorry.

Run Forrest! Run!
12 February 2003
Patrick Dempsey runs like the wind in this humorous action packed movie. I really enjoyed this movie. It is rare when a movie with an extremely simple plot can entertain. Every scene involving Patrick Dempsey attempting to get away comes to life with a real feeling of desperation and anxiety. I can't wait for the DVD to come out(Hope Hope).

Matthew Broderick and his weird facial hair.
29 January 2003
I will start by saying that this movie is extremely entertaining and the score is magnificent. This is one of the few great movies which takes place during the Civil War. The only thing that bothered me was the fact that Matthew Broderick's facial hair in this movie looks ridiculous. I don't think that he is capable of even growing facial hair. Anyway, this is a really minor thing that just annoyed me a little bit, other than that this is an excellent film. My vote is 8 out of 10.

Quite possibly the best movie ever directed
24 January 2003
The Thin Red Thin Red Line is one of those movies where the audience either loves it or hates it. I have yet to view a comment in which a person thought the film was moderately entertaining. People have either exclaimed their complete frustration and utter disatisfacton with the movie or have praised it as a masterpiece, there is no middle ground. This type of movie grows better and better with each viewing, I must admit after watching it for the first time it was difficult to make sense of who was narrating at a particular time. The complexity of emotion and desire in this movie are astounding to say the least.

Another IMDB user mentioned that the tactics and strategy that the U.S. soldiers utilized while attempting to take the hill was unrealistic. My advice is that this person study WW2 infantry tactics or at least watch the History Channel. Human waves was a common method used by all sides of the war(especially the Japanese).

Anyway, I'll refrain from turning my review into a long essay and end in saying that this movie(and A Midnight Clear) rank as a couple of the best movies ever made. This movie is perfect in every way. 10 out of 10 is my vote.
