The VVitch: A New-England Folktale (2015)
A horror film that's worthy of appealing to critics.
One definition of the word 'Horror' is "Intense Repugnance" this film is a perfect example.
The Witch follows a family that's being torn apart by the acts of a witch. This film doesn't have jump scares, nor lame cgi driven action. It instead focuses on its story.
The performances are brilliant. Everyone was FANTASTIC! This movie just looks brilliant. So many shots look like they could be genuine works of art.
I'm not going to go on about being a cinephile though. Because this movie can really appeal to all. The great dialogue and chilling audio leave you feeling perpetually chilled. You can't sit comfortably watching this.
There are several shots that are quite disturbing but they aren't overly gory or torturous. We don't get to see the Witch in the film very much but when we do its awesome and unforgettable.
I just can't recommend this movie enough!
Deadpool (2016)
Good, but not without its flaws
Wade AKA Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) tells the story of how he was subjected to painful experiments, now with mutant abilities he seeks revenge.
Deadpool is a superhero movie unlike anything before it. First off it's extremely R-rated. Second throughout the film the main is constantly braking the fourth wall, not mention there are some great jokes about the studio.
Deadpool has LOTS of comedy, but with comedy being very subjective I personally felt this movie was very hit-and-miss, though when it hit it was hysterical.
Next the story, its nothing outstanding, a simple predictable revenge story, the villain is really nothing special.
Last the action, it wasn't as awesome and exciting as I was hoping, there was an overuse of CGI, given some scenes required it, but still, it feels faker looking then other CGI heavy films I've seen. Early on there are some pretty crazy action scenes, but the further the film goes the duller the action got.
I personally feel this film was perhaps rushed? More time could've given them the chance to focus on crazier stunts and in the least a more balanced sense of humor.
One last note, the one reason Deadpool actually didn't meet my expectations was that I kept hearing how this film was setting the new standard for R-rated films. I don't know what those people mean, I've seen movies push the envelope way more.
In conclusion its worth a laugh, but don't expect anything Oscar-worthy.
Krampus (2015)
Very entertaining Christmas comedy/horror
A dysfunctional family gathers for Christmas, when the Christmas spirit is dead, Krampus comes to punish the naughty.
Writer/Director Michael Dougherty (Trick R Treat) brings us this fun flick. Similar to Trick R Treat Krampus is more fun then scary. But that only works in its favor. Its not filled with comedic lines or anything like that. Its the mix of crude characters with awesome creatures.
Notice horror is the last genre listed. That's because it doesn't really treat itself like horror. It doesn't have a bunch of cheap jump scares, its not gonna gross people out. It just has a lot of fun creature action.
All of the creatures look great, but none more so then Krampus himself. Every scene he's in is generally exciting.
The only downfall I can think of is that there are some dumb character decisions. Given with horror films you generally have to have some dumb characters to carry the plot. I also felt the end was a tad rushed. Though it still had awesome visuals.
This film isn't for everyone, some may not find this to be fun. But you couldn't have wiped the smile off my face :)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014)
Simple fun, what did you expect?
4 6-foot tall mutant turtles defend New York from crime, but an old foe will threaten their very existence.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was made by Nickelodeon and it feels like it. Lots of humor aimed at the kids. But still some good jokes for the adults too.
This movie is just proof that people will literally bash anything with Michael Bay's name on it. He was just a producer, this wasn't his vision. He wanted them to be aliens. No this is Jonathan Liebesman's movie.
The action is awesome, Splinter in particular was cool. I remember when I was young and I loved to watch Tim Burton's Batman movies and pretend I was Batman. This feels like it could do today what Batman did for me back then.
No this isn't like the crappy Marvel movies that claim to be new and different but actually deliver the same crap over and over.
This is simple, it isn't trying to be anything mind-blowing.
Like most movies this does differentiate from its origins. So be warned if you don't like change then you won't like this. But honestly to everyone else just stop with the hate already. This was fun.
I recommend you give it a shot.
X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)
Horribly overrated extremely flawed film. I don't recommend it.
In the future Sentinels are hunting and killing mutants, in an attempt to save mutantkind Wolverine is sent back to the past to change the future.
Movies that take on time travel take a huge risk, it generally makes for a flawed film. After seeing several good reviews about X-men: Days of Future Past I hoped it would be good. Nope.
First off the explanation for time traveling is just a cheap mutant ability to keep fans from questioning it. They also use the same excuse to exclude the butterfly effect from occurring.
Secondly the current timeline that is supposed fix all connection problems from the original trilogy to X-men: First Class is so horribly flawed I truly don't understand how fans can stick up for this nonsense.
The action scenes were mediocre, nothing amazing. The acting, uninteresting. They have great talent like Peter Dinklage and Evan Peters and make them look like they're B-list forgettable actors. Its really sad.
This movie is so horribly overrated by fanboys that it currently resides on the IMDb's top 250 list. Its rated higher then classic films like the original Planet of the Apes and Arsenic and Old Lace.
This is dumb filmmaking for audiences who want to watch loads of special effects and lame but good looking actors. Wanna watch a new action film with good characters and emotions? Try Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. A film with logic.
Planes: Fire & Rescue (2014)
Fantastic underrated work of animation.
Dusty Crophopper damages his gearbox and is unable to race, to help his friend he starts firefighting, the perils await.
After Planes (which I seemed to enjoy more than most) received very low ratings it was hard to see the light for this film. Fortunately Planes: Fire & Rescue manages to outdo its predecessor.
The movies is filled with lots of familiar actors lending there voices. There's lots of funny moments including Some good innuendo that'll go over the kids heads.
But the real highlight for this movie is its amazing action and effects. Its incredibly fast paced with lots of glorious flight sequences.
I wouldn't call this movie perfect, in fact I purposefully overrated this film to try get its star rating (currently 5.9) higher. But overall this is an awesome work of animation that's entertaining for all ages.
Don't listen to all the negativity. This is worthy of being called another Disney classic in my book. (BTW while I enjoyed the first film I wouldn't consider it a classic)
Big Hero 6 (2014)
Fun filled adventure with great characters!
Hiro discovers a robot named Baymax, there friendship grows as they're faced with the impending threat of a masked villain.
Big Hero 6 has a lot to live up to due to it being made by Disney, this marks Disney's first animated film based on a Marvel comic.
Personally I look forward more to films like this that aren't musical. Frozen had wonderful songs, but the characters weren't very likable and the story was predictable, it was just a weaker Disney film.
While Big Hero 6 is a little predictable its made strong by the great characters and their respective story lines.
As you may be able to tell from the trailers Baymax is a great hilarious character. He is what Olaf should have been.
I don't want to go to into detail just know that this film is entertaining, you won't find it annoying or hard to watch. Its just a great ride from beginning to end showcasing Disney's great character development.
The Town That Dreaded Sundown (2014)
Good idea with some clichés
Some 60+ years since a serial killer left the town of Texaracana in fear the killer seems to be back for more, but one girl will stop at nothing to uncover his identity.
This film is really intelligently shot, it mixes in several scenes from the original film while also creating some copycat scenes with different characters, I really enjoyed it. Good acting all around.
That being said this lost a lot of likability with its death scenes, there are several characters with less then five minutes of screen time, yet they leave us thanking the killer for offing them. you'll notice the mpaa rating says it has strong sexual content, I'm not one to really complain about unneeded sex and nudity that being said the sex scenes were really used to degrade the characters.
Overall this was a nice slasher film, fans of the sub-genre will enjoy it. Not a slasher fan? you should probably pass on it.
Horns (2013)
A good crime thriller mixed with okay fantasy
Marrin (Juno Temple) is found dead, everyone thinks her boyfriend Ig (Daniel Radcliffe) is to blame, one morning he wakes to find he's started growing horns, they seem to possess powers that'll help him find the real killer.
I'm a huge fan of fantasy films, that being said the fantasy elements of this one are just okay, the effects are mostly good though the flames shown in some scenes are a little fake looking. The overall story of his horns felt underwhelming and thrown in last minute as an excuse.
The acting is decent, Juno Temple steals the show in every scene she's in. The rest of the supporting cast which includes Joe Anderson, Max Minghella, James Remar, Kathleen Quinlan, Heather Graham and David Morse are all quite good, but this film really depended on Daniel Radcliffe's performance, which was dull. He sounds Irish, which isn't a bad thing except he's supposed to be playing an American. But he's shown time and time again he can't express emotion well. He was boring.
All that being said I still quite liked the film mostly due to the writing, several of good darkly humorous scenes had me laughing, my suspicion of the killer ended up being right, that being said they did a good job keeping me doubting myself. I wouldn't call this horror though there are a couple shocking violent scenes, overall this is a crime drama. It had a nice story and a good mystery, but it deserved a better lead actor.
Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014)
On par with Marvel's recent movies.
The Transformers are in hiding, they are being hunted by a bounty hunter called Lockdown, They unite again when Galvatron rises and threatens Earth.
Overall this was an unneeded entry in the series, it has a completely different cast and that didn't help, they weren't bad, just not good either, the story was interesting though nothing amazing, the action and effects were great as usual but overall this was a slower film then I expected.
This is a rather weak film all around, but it felt pretty similar to Marvel's films as of late, whenever Michael Bay makes an action comedy its horribly bashed but when Marvel does it its okay? Marvel films are so horribly overrated that there are currently three movies on IMDb's top 250 list, While Transformers: Age of Extinction isn't anything great I wish people would stop hating on it while they continue to obsess over Marvel crap.
But would I recommend this movie? Only if you enjoy Marvel as well.
Godzilla (2014)
The juxtaposition of fantastic acting and jaw-dropping effects makes a masterpiece!
Godzilla tells the story of how us human beings in our ignorance try to contain a couple of unidentified creatures, they break out and begin wreaking havoc, Godzilla is awoken and he's not happy.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson leads the cast, he gives the best performance in his career, Ken Watanabe and Elizabeth Olsen play second string but they show so much in their facial expressions and in the way they deliver lines its quite amazing, Bryan Cranston has a surprisingly small role, but he gives an emotional unforgettable performance.
The effects are the most amazing I've ever seen, what I love is how the violence is not overwhelming, there are a lot of brilliant subtle shots of the creatures.
The negativity this film is getting is due to Godzilla not having much screen time, but their wrong, given his fight sequences are held back till the end, but that's alright, remember this is a remake of the classic Gojira, Godzilla gets much more screen time here then he did in the original.
This film takes itself seriously, and that's a rare pleasure in action films nowadays, this is not a Marvel superhero film or a Michael Bay film, this is an intense emotional realistic military based film.
Even though Godzilla feels like a supporting character, when you see him its jaw-dropping and unforgettable. An action film for the ages! An absolute must-see! :)
Saving Mr. Banks (2013)
Nothing short of a masterpiece!
Saving Mr. Banks is based on Walt Disney's struggle to achieve his 20 year long promise to his daughters to make Mary Poppins, meanwhile the writer Pamela Travers refused to give permission, all the while reflecting on her past.
Tom Hanks brings Walt back to life in this film, he's mesmerizing. Emma Thompson is Travers and though she can be stubborn, she still brings magic to the screen. Colin Farrel, Paul Giamatti, Jason Schwartzmen and many other great actors and actresses give amazing performances as well.
Emoeions run high in this dramedy that's quite funny at parts while keeping its fantastic, dramatic and inspiring story flowing.
While this movie has a few PG-13 elements its still a must see for everyone!
While there are some differences from this and the real events, they do so to give us more brilliant dialogue and acting.
Don't pass up this masterpiece! Two thumbs up!
Planes (2013)
What's wrong with people? This was great!
Dusty Crophopper dreams of being a racer, he finally gets his big chance, but danger awaits.
Planes mixes great humor, amazing creative visuals, and a good message filled storyline.
I think people are just expecting too much from Disney, not every movie is a great princess story or song filled musical with beautiful lyrics, but the kids will still love it as will adults if they pull their sticks out of their butts.
Cars 2 might have been disappointing but Planes REALLY surprised me.
It also has a great ethnic diversity, so nobody can complain about that.
Another Disney film deserving of classic status. Bravo Disney. Bravo!
Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens (1922)
92 years later, still a masterpiece.
I'm twenty years old and consider myself a horror buff, but sadly my biggest weakness is my lack of knowledge of pre-70's horror. That's why a decided I had to see Nosferatu!
Nosferatu is the first film to be based upon Bram Stoker's Dracula. And it easily trumps all other versions. (though the 92 version is well worth the watch, as is the Bella Lugosi film)
Max Schreck plays the role of Count Dracula, he will always be the alpha and omega when it comes to playing Dracula, one look at him and you know he's the perfect fit.
Nosferatu is a silent film, though there is some excellent background noise to accompany the film, the acting is good all around, and I imagine acting in a silent film is no easy task. While as can expected the film isn't jumpy, and it's a tad slow, it still has some excellent scenes for a horror film. Not to mention a few different ideas to the vampire legend that I haven't seen used in any other vampire film.
It' a must see, even now in 2014
Inferno (1980)
No Suspiria, but still quite good.
Inferno is the second film in Director Dario Argento's witch trilogy. Rose has found a new book that she believes to be true, she calls out for her brother for help, but when he arrives he finds terror!
Inferno has a good story that keeps the chills coming. It honestly had me a little jumpy!
The acting is decent, though there are some unintended comical scenes weather it was due to some hammy acting or cheesy dialogue.
It's still really entertaining, though similar to Suspiria, I found the end to be disappointing but everything leading up to that was good!
If you're a fan of classic horror, and some genuinely creepy death scenes, then this a must see, though be prepared for a little bit of cheese!
Non-Stop (2014)
Entertaining, But nothing amazing.
Liam Neeson plays an air marshal who receives texts threatening to kill someone every 20 minutes if $150 mil isn't transferred.
Non-stop has plenty of action sequences, a good mystery that will keep you guessing (or at least doubting yourself), and a few funny moments as well.
That being said there are a few plot holes, the film has a lot of coincidences, but all in all it's thoroughly enjoyable.
The acting is good all around though nobody really stood out.
It's nowhere near Taken or The Grey but Non-stop manages to keep us entertained.
Well worth the watch!
Cannibal Holocaust (1980)
An underrated, tough to watch classic
Four college age kids disappear, their footage is found, what was once thought to be an amazing documentary ends being the most brutal representation of human monstrosity.
Cannibal Holocaust is shockingly brutal and gruesome. If you didn't know, the animals in this film were actually killed during filmmaking, hence why it's the most controversial film of all time.
It feels completely ahead of it's time with amazingly realistic images. This is probably the most brutal film I've ever seen.
The acting was very realistic, the music and camera work help add to the eeriness of it all.
This is basically the birth of the found footage sub-genre.
While I agree what they did killing the animals was horrible and unforgivable I feel the Director and Actors should be held accountable, but the movie itself should not be considered trash due to that.
It has an amazing story that's really quite poetic, questioning who are really the monsters? If you can stomach it, it's a must see! An American horror classic!
Recommended rating: R for disturbing brutal violence including rape and animal cruelty, graphic nudity and a strong sex scene.
Suspiria (1977)
This is still a great horror film!
I'm only twenty years old so I never had the chance to see the great horror films of the 80's, 70's etc.. That being said I've been wanting to see Suspiria for a while, I was excited to finally see it. The thing that surprised me most was the death scenes, while this film was more character driven and didn't rely on terror and violence there are still a few violent scenes, and they're done amazingly, probably the bloodiest deaths I've scene in a 70's movie. But more then that this film has a fantastic score, brilliant sets that add to the eeriness, the acting does not disappoint either. It's a really surreal and darkly beautiful movie. It's hard to find anything wrong with this movie, though I did find the ending to be a bit underwhelming. But it's still a must see horror classic!
Excision (2012)
weird, dark and original, definitely worth the watch!
Excision simply follows a girl who is an outcast, she has REALLY weird psycho-sexual fantasies, and this is her life.
The movie shows the complications of families. It also shows bullying in a slightly different light. This movie is bold and original. But if you're ready for something new, then you should definitely give it a watch! The ending is a little anticlimactic but it is dark. I personally don't know if this really qualifies for horror, it's more of a drama with some honestly dark humorous moments. In any case it's just nice something so original! A must see!
Be warned though there are some pretty disturbing scenes. (Mostly her fantasies) But it's well worth it!
Ginger Snaps (2000)
Good character driven werewolf flick
Ginger Snaps is about two outcast sisters who have a run in with a werewolf, one is infected and their relationship is put to the test.
The film relied upon the performances of the two lead actresses, and they did really well, their characters felt real, they really did great, the supporting cast didn't disappoint either, it's really surprising to see a lower budget movie with a mostly unknown cast done so well, but everyone did their jobs well, it's just all around well made.
They didn't need to rely on special effects as this film was more about the characters then the werewolf itself, once the werewolf is in fully formed the special effects are good, though I'm not a fan of the design of the creature they still did a good job.
Just an all around well made movie makes for a good watch.
Tangled (2010)
A masterpiece! My personal favorite princess movie!
Rapunzel has grown up secluded in her tower never aloud to leave, but on her birthday there's a huge lantern festival, she wants more then anything to see them and goes on an adventure.
Tangled didn't look that good to me from the previews but once I finally watched it I was blown away.
As usual Disney creates amazing songs to accompany their stories. The actors lending their voices all did amazing especially when singing!
It doesn't matter your age or gender this movie is a must see. Great humor! Lovable characters! and some of the most beautiful images in any movie in recent memory!
Simply a masterpiece!
Frozen (2013)
Disney makes yet another masterpiece!
Sisters Anna & Elsa have grown up separated all their lives, Elsa takes off for the mountains so Anna goes after her, of course discovering love along the way.
The people at Disney should be commended just for song writing ability, nearly every song in this movie is fantastic.
The actors lending their voices are fantastic! Especially at singing!
My only qualm is that the story was quite predictable. I understand it's hard to be original over and over again, but Disney had an original idea with this movie, they just used their originality in the first half hour and then got predictable.
Still what they was amazing, Frozen should not be missed no matter your age or gender.
Apartment 1303 3D (2012)
Snoozefest
I usually like ghost stories, but I feel generous giving this 5/10 stars.
The acting wasn't terrible, it was a pretty much unheard of cast. (At least I didn't recognize anyone.) But the dialogue was terrible, especially in the beginning when we literally watched a chick just talk her self a whole bunch. The second half gets better but it's still super boring. Not to mention the characters weren't likable.
I gave it 5/10 stars because it at least had a pretty good story even if it took long to tell it.
Watch at your own risk but be warned, it could quite easily put you to sleep. Lets hope that the Writer(s) learned something and be making the same mistake again.
The Lego Movie (2014)
A few good humorous moments lead up to a very heartfelt message.
I didn't think this looked that good based on the previews, but I decided to give it a shot.
Bad Cop (Liam Neeson) steals the show, creating some good laughs, but over all I thought it was actually a little slow in the beginning, once Batman (Will Arnett) & Benny (Charlie Day) are introduced it gets funnier, but it really only had a few funny moments.
Fortunately nearing the end a surprising twist happened that carried this film to it's brilliant message, ending on a great note.
I didn't feel the vocals of the leads (Chris Pratt & Elizabeth Banks) were anything special nor did their characters bring much humor. Morgan Freeman's character had a bit more humor to him and he was an all around more likable character. Will Ferrell is surprisingly great.
By the end I felt it was well worth the watch, I don't know if I'd place it in the top 250 but it's a very well done movie that doesn't disappoint.
The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
Magnificent!
I've heard quite a few people doubting this movie would be anywhere near as good as either of its predecessors. But in my opinion they were wrong.
Similarly to The Dark Knight, there actually several scenes excluding Batman, but unlike TDK, The Dark Knight Rises is actually about Batman. Christian Bale is awesome yet again as are Michael Caine (who has much more emotion in this one), Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman in their respective roles. Tom Hardy plays Bane brilliantly, He's dark and sinister like The Joker, though more masculine of course, he doesn't have that comedic feel to him like Joker did, but he still has quite a few awesome lines. Joseph Gordon-Levitt was perfect in this movie, as was Marion Cotillard. Anne Hathaway brought humor whether you wanted it or not, but I thought she was a fantastic Catwoman.
The thing I loved the most about TDKR is how well it was written, its a perfect sequel to both its predecessors, I was worried that the end would be sad and disappointing, but it wasn't, it was done just right.
There'll always be people disappointed by any movie. But I find The Dark Knight Rises to be a brilliant ending to an epic masterpiece of a trilogy.
