Troy (2004)
Entertaining, but inaccurate (POTENTIAL SPOILERS)
I just got home from seeing the movie Troy and i will admit it is entertaining, but being a big fan of The Iliad and The Odyssey, i will have to say it is inaccurate.
Some of the major inaccuracies that i was rather upset with were the deaths of Agamemnon, and Menalaus. In the actual story, Menalaus does not in fact die. He finds Helen and takes her back to Sparta and she is once again the queen of Sparta. However, in the movie Troy, Menalaus who fights Paris (correct) beats Paris (correct) and Paris crawls over to Hector and grabs his "sturdy leg" (correct), but then when Menalaus tries to deliver the finishing blow to Paris, Hector stabs him and then Menalaus dies. When i saw that, i figured, "Well, i guess he won't be in The Odyssey movie if they make one." That's not as big a deal as the other inaccuracy. Agamemnon, who is for some reason portrayed rather barbarically in the movie, is killed by the cousin of Paris and Hector. I think i like his death in The Odyssey a lot better with him coming home to his wife to find that she was cheating on him and planned his death. Considering how he is portrayed in the movie, i thought it would've been a much more fitting end for him.
But my main concern is the length of the movie. Yes, it was rather long, but storyline wise, it was much too short. It appeared that the war only lasted 15 days when really it was supposed to last 10 years. This makes me think that there will be no movie for The Odyssey (which is disappointing) because Agamemnon is dead so he can't tell Odysseus to be careful when he comes home to his wife, and there Odysseus being away for 20 years would not make much sense because he was only in Troy for 15 days in the movie.
But this isn't about The Odyssey. This review is about Troy, so let's get on with it. I thought that the story was entertaining though inaccurate. I thought Peter O'Toole was great as King Prium and I thought Brad Pitt did a good job with Achilles as well. I also thought Eric Bana did much better than he did in HULK as Hector. But aren't you getting rather annoyed with Orlando Bloom? After Lord of the Rings, all he does is just play a foolish lover in every single movie he's been in. And Legolas, Will Turner, and Paris are all pretty much the same character the way he portrays them.
All in all, I would give the movie a 7/10 because it was a little bit too long, it was inaccurate (which was disappointing because I was interested in seeing what happens in the book), and it was kinda quiet during the fight scenes. But it was entertaining and the acting was well done. So there is the reasoning for my 7/10 rating.
The Godfather Part III (1990)
Disappointment
I truly loved "The Godfather" and "The Godfather Part 2". I was really disappointed with "The Godfather Part 3". Here is a list of reasons
1) Weak plot 2) Strange character relationships 3) Bad acting from a few 4) Some cheezy/predictable parts
1) The plot was Michael trying to legitamitize his business. Somehow, attending his son's Opera Debut, getting named a Saint, a feud between some guy name Joey Zaza, and feuds with other mob heads mixes into that mess. The difference from "The Godfather" and "The Godfather Part 2" is that the sub plots were in the general vecinity of the main plot. Part 3 is just a giant mess.
2) Who would make out and date their 1st cousin? (enough said) 3) Sofia Coppola (enough said yet again) 4) I sooooo predicted Michael to be in the car when Kay was going out into Sicily and almost everything was predictable, like the climactic killings in the end. The Godfather Part 3 was trying too hard to be like the original (the ending at least) because they have everyone in a peaceful setting (Baptism in the first, Opera in part 3) and then it cuts to all these killings happening at the same time.
I did not like The Godfather Part 3 much because it was a huge disappointment
The Godfather Part II (1974)
As Good as the First
When i saw Godfather Part 2 i was kinda skeptical because sequels are normally not as good as the original. But "The Godfather Part 2" is an exception to that theory. Godfather Part 2 is as good as the first. I watched it and though my favorite character wasn't in the movie due to a tragic toll booth death (Sonny), i still enjoyed it anyway.
The Godfather (1972)
Great Movie
Whenever i saw a list of the top 100 movies, "The Godfather" was always on top. I had no clue why. I heard it was really good so i felt i should see it. So one evening, after all my homework was done, i sat down on the couch in front of the TV and surfed through the channels and i land upon a memo saying, "The Godfather: Next at 8 pm" So i decide to just watch maybe an hour or so of it and then go to sleep. I stayed up the whole night watching it. The acting in the movie was excellent and the cinematography was great. The characters were so believable that whenever i see a picture/movie of any character in the movie, the first thing that pops into my brain is their character name. After watching the movie, i couldn't stop talking about it to all my friends. Now i understand why its always on top of top 100 lists.
Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven (2002)
Great Game
When i first got it, i thought the first few missions were somewhat boring. I put the game aside for a little bit. After maybe a few days, i had nothing better to do so i said, "why not?". After that i was hooked to the game. I only left the computer to eat, sleep, and do homework. The graphics in the game are so realistic and the gameplay is too. Games such as StarCraft and Spider-Man (the movie game) have great cutscene graphics, but decent gameplay graphics. Mafia's gameplay graphics are just as good as their cutscene graphics. There are a few missions i was discouraged with and found impossible to beat, but i beat the game. The storyline is a storyline that i say rivals some gangster movies.
The only problems are that sometimes you have to drive all the way across a vast, detailed city to get to your mission while obeying traffic laws. This does make the game more realistic, but its somewhat annoying at times. Another thing that after you beat the game, there is Free Ride and Free Ride Extreme. Neither of those options come anywhere close to being as good as the actual game.
The game is so realistic and lifelike. This is one of my favorite games along with Grand Theft Auto 3 and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.
