Catch-22 (2019)
Where is season 2
Probably the best remake of its kind so why is there no season 2 ... unbelievable. Not a big fan of Clooney, but this has to be the best thing he's been in and produced, its brilliant. The series contains satire /comedy /serious drama all in one. The story line is just brilliant. I have just bought the DVD because I wanted to watch it again. World War 11 action drama brought back to life in this awesome retelling of the original movie. Plus there is some grit not your usual Disney affair. The directing and cinematography are just A1 top rated. I really can't quite figure why something like this bailed out, when it is really a timeless classic gem that would be repeatedly watched my many ( me included) and those who want quality cinema.
7 Days (2009)
7 days sells out
Very sad to see the forced laughter and the political correctness take over the new format for seven days.
The comic show in its early days had moments of genuine hilarity.
But now this is now been bought off with what looks like a politically correct show of sanitized jokes pro covid government etc.
Basically comedians have been bought and now they just look like paid clowns working for the PC / TV . Very sad!! :(
3 Days to Kill (2014)
A movie that has all the elements from action to drama.
My wife and I enjoyed this movie from start to finish. The acting and story line were right up there with other movies like Taken. Kevin Costner held the movie together like glue. The story unfolds around his life which is about to come to an end due to a terminal illness. His career as a government hired killer/operative is over, but for one last job. What was different about this movie is it explores drama, and action. The drama coming from how he wants to rekindle his relationships with his daughter and and X wife. . It's all nicely put together with some light fun moments and some on the edge of your seat action scenes. The balance of drama and action allowed the characters to be developed more than say a a full blown action movie which wec liked. We liked the balance and so possibly this will work better for those wanting a good mix. To sum up the action scenes are well done and are numerous but are part of the bigger picture and story.
Fully recommend this movie as a good watch and is the best movie we have seen in the last 6 months. If you are a hard out action fan this movie might leave you a bit short changed but for us it was a great balance and a welcome relief from some other stuff we've seen lately.
Dunkirk (2017)
Hyped up war movie that fails on many levels.
First I would like to rate this movie
Directing; Camera direction good/ shots in focus 4/10
Script: Could of been written by a two year old. Comprised of about 10 simple sentences. 1/10
Music: I can only sum this up as painfully annoying to the point it began to override what was happening on screen. Kind of a depressing post apocalyptic vibe. 0/10
Acting: Average had almost a cloned look to a of of the characters had black hair. 3/10
Story: No, definitely lacked one, apart from some events that were taking place.
basic story - 1. boat rescue father and two sons 2.soldiers on beach waiting to be rescued- 3. pilots flying around. 1/10
Emotional connect - None was made because characters never developed, saying a few sentences. Scenes started at Dunkirk war bit no pre Dunkirk character development. 0/10
This is an overrated movie along the same lines as Mad max fury road.
No plot very little story big budget.
There are some great war movies out there like the Imitation Game, and Unbroken but sadly this is not one them.
Rogue One (2016)
A defining Science fiction movie that stands proudly alongside the original Star Wars
If you are a Star Wars/Science Fiction fan and you like a good story that has all the essence and soul of the first Star Wars, then here it is.
I would rate this as the best Science Fiction movie to hit the screens in the last 5 years. I am looking forward to this sequel release more than the Force Awakens with it obvious faults, and lack of originality and story line. I would like to see this director, plus script/story writers, do all the Star Wars Movies if this is the result. The the essence of good vs evil ( the force) is brought back with new characters. The fact that so many of the characters died in the movie gives it more realism, grit and impact. The way it tied into the story line of previous first Star Wars release was cleverly done with appearances of past and present actors cleverly (CGI) done. The music score also deserves a mention not a copy of the original but tied in nicely. I would hope in the next one they keep it in the same feel which means good story, acting and movie flow. More Please
Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015)
A timeless classic that will appeal to most
I thought it was cleverly done. The mixing of the old with the new which was nearly seamless. Although a little disappointed in the cyclic nature of the story line, the drama, actionable and emotional connect were are all there. When the old characters appeared together it was just magic and a lump developed in my throat. This movie departs with a glimpse of Luke Skywalker the only remaining Jedi. I did miss Yoda//Obi also for those little words of wisdom about the force but hopefully we will get that in the next one. The story line with destruction of the third but larger Death Star/Planet although a bit disappointing rings true almost like the obsession of building a bigger more destructive bomb like we do here. Having said that for sake of entertainment the story tellers will need to source another plot for the next installment. No doubt having to go back to the past and look at some of those World war 2 movies or back further to plot lines /stories from ancient Japan which is where I think Lucas got his initial inspiration. Investment in the story will always be rewarding because when people ask what was it about you need to be inspirational with this sort of movie.
Spectre (2015)
The best in the series so far
I would say this and the first movie Casino Royale are the true stand outs in the James Bond series, with Spectre just edging out the latter because of it's solid story and action scenes. Spectre was a roller-coaster ride from the moment you sit down. Within five minutes an amazing building collapse and helicopter crash, simply brilliant. The acting from Daniel Craig in this spy adventure was the job and more, as in Casino Royale, he returns to a more charismatic and likable character. The movie baddies don't slack either as they deliver solid performances, notable mention brutal fight in the train and torture scene reminiscent from Hostil. The movie ties up the previous movies linking villains, characters, and makes some sense of the madness that has unfolded on Bond and the World. Believable current plot line and the essential ingredient of some passionate love interests puts the icing on the cake and turns the movie into a true Bond classic that will appeal to die hard fans. This will be a one I'll be buying the Blu ray for and watching again. The length of the movie hit the right mark where as Sky fall was just too long. The parting question that this movie will leave you with is, is this the end of the saga with Daniel Craig as it tied everything up nicely. Personally I hope not.
Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
Moronic idiocy
I was looking forward to this movie and thought it had the potential to much better than the first. The problems with this movie.
1. Was there a script, was there a story? If you consider basically 1 hour of attacking a truck to a destination point then taking a 5 minute rest then heading back for another hour of truck attack. I will let you decide
2. How was the acting. Not sure Max sadly never completes one sentence -Grunts, moans and screams, pouts yeah well probably needed a script to really comment on that, just bad sorry none to very little character development.
3. Special effects reasonable I'm sure dressing up and speeding along the desert was fun, but watching this was just boring after 10 minutes. A big budget, so a tragic waste.
Possibly one of the worst movies I have seen in sometime. The big question how did this get 8.3 by IMDb.
After Earth (2013)
Underrated Sci Fi
A very underrated movie. This movie seems to have been given an unfair rap I recently viewed the movie and was expecting complete corny trash. I was pleasantly surprised to find this was a decent budgeted movie with reasonable plot line and acting. The father and son team that i thought would of been horrible, wasn't, i thought they both give good performances. There was some obvious holes in the story .. The thousand years after Earth should of been either 100 ,000 or just another sister planet. But this was never a cheap movie and the production, aliens and special effects are all pretty good. If this movie had never come free to TV to watch I would of never would of touched it . Which makes you think what other movies have been given harsh treatment.
Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)
Excellent followup to the first movie
One of my favourite science fiction/ Star Trek movies. Great story re imagination of the famous characters Khan. Khan is brilliantly played by Benedict Cumberbatch. A great story line that has you gripped from start to finish. It has all the essentials from Klingon's to superb sound, special effects, brilliant acting, you won't be disappointed. I now own this on Blu ray and it never gets boring. After initially saying there was room for improvement after watching it a few times it is an excellent sequel that stand alongside the first as a true Sci Fi classic.
Oblivion (2013)
Sci Fi Brilliance
My wife and I throughly enjoyed this movie from start to finish. It worked brilliantly on many levels. The story was original and kept you guessing with twists and turns along the way. The special effects were outstanding, the best I have seen since Star Trek. No obvious CGI and the sound and visuals were just amazing. The acting via Tom Cruise as the main dominant character with good support actors all played their parts well and completely believable. Tom Cruise is now producing and acting in some brilliant movies, I was never a big fan but I am now. Script was clean, concise with no lag time between action, scene and story development. This all leads to a fascinating, believable on the edge ride for the viewer. When the movie comes out on DVD this will be on my list as movie I will watch several times. Lastly I would like to thank the makers and people involved in this movie for producing such an excellent movie and one that doesn't go for the obvious kid merchandising.
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
A triumph on many levels - A great work of Art
i recently purchased the Lord of the Rings Trilogy special extended DVD edition which obviously includes part 1 the fellowship of the ring. I honestly did not realize the amount of dedicated, inspired, creative people that were involved in the making of the movies. People from sword enthusiast to designers of authentic buildings, scale models, 3d rendering, etc. I found the behind the scenes look at how the movie was made an insight. Insights into Tolkien the man . author- to the technical triumphs of adapting script, landscape and technology to shoot the three movies in such a short time. The movie is a triumph on many levels. The main reason i believe this is true is because of the creative attention to detail, which gives the movie an integrity that very few movies can be stamped with. I would highly recommend the special extended editions which have added 30 -40 minutes to each of the movies. If you have time definitely worth looking at are the appendices, to appreciate the finer details of the making of. When movies become a work of art - A great work of ART. My only wish is we could see more great stories be given the same treatment. Peter and team if you ever read these reviews i would like it if you remade the movie Papillon - 1973 movie prison escape movie .
In Time (2011)
That was Excellent
The first thing I said after watching this movie was, 'That was excellent.' When a story line, directing, and acting all come together in this way you get excellent. The story line was innovative, original, but most of all it was believable. This movie I would rank as the best I have seen in the last 7 years. A special mention is needed for Justin Timberlake who played the role with integrity. I will forward to his next movie. Directing was fast paced, exciting, and no obvious CGI effects and spot on with character and actor choices. A movie needs a good story and this is where I think most of the credit should go. The story made me think that this was a believable future. Obsession with beauty, aging, money and the need to be in an exclusive group that runs everything sounds very similar to todays world but then this projected to some time in the future and the result is "In Time"
It has been said that 3 percent of the population make more than the remaining 97 percent, and interesting statistic
Total score 10/10 a must see if you like excellent movies
Star Trek (2009)
Addictive Movie
If only more movies could be made like this I would be in sci-fi heaven. The movie goes beyond science fiction with an action packed pace, drama and comedy all thrown in with very likable timeless characters. Sometimes it all just comes together and it does in this movie. This is the only movie I have watched 10 plus times and still I'm not bored with it. One of the most important keys for me is an emotional connection YOU FEEL FOR THE CHARACTERS. From the initial gut wrenching decision to save wife and baby KIrk to Spocks dealing with planet destruction. Secondly BELIEVABLE story, intelligently written.. tying in new with the old.
I thought I would be watching the third sequel by now WHAT HAPPENED???
The director did an amazing job and brought the action, pace, emotional, believable to the screen to make this an epic DEFINING MOVIE of the Decade..
