Black Swan (2010)
Simply brilliant
Such a big surprise for a year of just disappointments, Black Swan is a beautiful film, thrilling and at the same a little scary. It is just amazing the way the director worked with the elements he had on his hands: a unique actress (Natalie Portman), beautiful photography, nice sceneries,..., ... etc. More than just that, he built a refined atmosphere that shows perfectly how was Nina's non-discovered inner soul, and how that took over her body. Nina was a "grown up" child, her body could be in the 20s but her mentality was still 12, and when everything she didn't developed throughout her years of life, will at once, wake up at some point of her brain. And that's where the big plot of this drama will start to uncoil. Brilliant, this movie reached all my expectations.
Love Never Dies (2012)
Another beautiful story being destroyed by its sequel.
Since the time I went to SAO PAULO in Brazil and watched the Phantom of the Opera, I could confidently say that I was another lover of this story. The phantom of the opera is a set of beautiful sceneries, with beautiful music and a thrilling story. Nevertheless, as another author who got a little extra excited with the money made, Andrew Lloyd Webber created a sequel, based on a book that was just a floppy sequel for "the phantom of the opera" according to reviewers. Fortunately, who created this second book was not Gaston Leurox, which means, this book was pretty much a fanfic story. What to expect then? A new musical based on a fanfic story? Another big flop. "Love Never Dies" kills all the characters from the original, destroys the poetry existent in "The Phantom of the Opera", and in addition to it, it is full of clichés with a bad end. Nothing against New York, I particularly love this city, but not as a setting for "The Phantom". Music is just not as memorable, except for the "Till I hear you sing". The end, BLEEH, just made me cry. I was so disappointed with ALW. In my particular experience with theater, yes I have too agree they have SOME beautiful sceneries with lots of modernity. But the story is not just sceneries, and the big point that made the Phantom of the Opera the second most watched musical over the world was the truth behind the story; the passion that ALW created the musical, inspired by his ex-wife's (Sarah Brightman) voice. That's what lacks in "Love never dies"; the truth behind the characters, the love that just increases as the story goes by. I still think that ALW will get into his wits once again, and will get this story out of the theaters. Until there, the poetry from the original story will be trying to survive from this big shot in a hospital for killed dramas.
The Lovely Bones (2009)
Slow down Peter!
I've watched this movie multiple times, trying to guess what was wrong with Peter Jackson. He had a really "workable" story to work with,a beautiful soundtrack and also unique actors. This is one of those movies that once you are done watching it, you stop for awhile trying to think what the heck was wrong with its director. One of the big flaws of the movie: too much sugar in a glass of water. Susie Salmon is completely naive and lives in a beautiful and pink world in her head. OK,fine, she is just a teenager, but then, her colorful world starts to take over the movie and muffle its main plot: the search for her killer. Peter Jackson tries to divide it up into two completely different worlds that will interact among themselves in one way or another. Thus, the "mysticism" of her world will interfere in her father's search, and then what was supposed to be a realistic and also "magical" movie, turns out being a flawed drama. Suppose "heaven" actually exists. Nobody from there will help you to find their murderer. It is just too random a guy start to suspect about his neighbor/friend or who else he wants to, because he felt like hating that person. Come on! Let's grow up and face the reality: things like this don't happen at all. OK, but what about the place where Susies lives in? It might not be real too? - I know this, and according t another reviews, The Lovely Bones was supposed to be a story that would follow the kardecist spiritism beliefs. As a student of this religion, I can tell, yes there are nice moments depicting this doctrine. However the world wherein the "dead people" live, doesn't get in touch with the world that we live in like that movie shows on screen. I mean, it is not the way things usually happen according to the doctrine. Just one brief point, the only really beautiful part of the movie encounters in one of the final scenes. I am not going to tell it here, I will let you figure this out by yourself. The rest of the movie? Just a big flawed attempt to make a beautiful and thrilling movie. Nice try Peter.
