I am not a Streisand fan but -
10 August 2013
I am not a Streisand fan, but she nailed this role! The character of Joyce and her son was so well developed - Streisand was worthy of the Golden Globe for this role - I loved both characters, how they grew when on a road trip, and what they both had tried to do for each other - and how each thought the other perceived them.

I think everyone would benefit from watching this movie - it makes you think about family members, and learning from each other, and growing together. I often think that if people would grow together during difficult times, such as financial crises, losing a home, etc - that they would discover new depths in a persons character - something to really appreciate about another person.

Fantastic!
9 March 2013
I love this movie - I have never read the Ayn Rand books, but now I really want too, to see how she portrayed this subject, and the differences - when was the timeline for her book, for example?

The subject is discussed so very well here in the plot of the movie, and is so very relevant for right now - as the government wants a ridiculous amount of money from so many people - which it will then mismanage as only a wasteful, inefficient government can - as ours does!

I felt the acting was very good, and as I have not seen part 1 for some time, I didn't notice the casting changes between 1 and 2. I am now ready to see Atlas Shrugged part 3 when it comes out, which I understand is the last of the trilogy.

I accidentally watched the "outtakes" CD first, before the actual movie - the "outtakes" stuff is a bit dry and boring, but still worth watching.

another great, great child and supporting actors!
30 September 2012
Good story of a young kid who needs someone to believe in him - that he can rise above life of a young derelict kid - The child actors are very good in this, and it is great to follow the career of Harry Shearer, though I would love to hear what happened to fellow actor Barry Froner.

The gentleman playing the policeman, Don Haggerty - has an extensive resume as well, and plays his part very well -

I love the intelligence of this series, and of Ann Sothern's characters in general - these seem somewhat groundbreaking for their day, in this case 1956.

Ann Tyrell always gives a great performance as the receptionists, Vi Praskins - such expressions -

Great episode about child stars -
29 September 2012
I loved this episode - involving 1 very talented child star, and 1 not-so-talented "child star" being pushed into show biz - great performances by the cast as usual, plus the two "child star" players are great in their roles. A lot of intelligent things about this one - the fact that child stars are still - children -.

Jesse White is fantastic again as Cagey Calhoun - and to me, Ann Sothern's acting is as great as that of Lucille Ball - though very different.

Don Porter is always great as Mr. Devery, and it is fantastic the chemistry between Ann Sothern's "susie" and his "Mr. Devery" -

Great series, great sets and actors / actresses
27 September 2012
I love Ann Sothern, and as usual her comedy is intelligent and fun - in this episode she must spend the night unexpectedly in a "haunted house" that used to belong to a famous author - and now belongs to his daughter.

The rivalry between her and "Cagey Calhoun" played so well by Jesse White comes into play also, as he arrives in an attempt to also get the contract for rights to these famous books.

Judith Evelyn if I remember right plays the part of the authors daughter so well, reminding one of the famous Vampira, or Morticia Addams.

Another Great Episode!
27 September 2012
As usual, Ann Sothern, Ann Tyrell and Don Porter give great performances - Ann Sothern as "susie" and Ann Tyrell as "Vi" are great, dealing with the problem of a cat walking in from the terrace of the building, having to deal with the boss who wants an office - and not one with a cat in it.

As usual, Ann Sothern's TV shows are intelligent, with the dealing of an allergy of a client to cats -

Another great episode in a great series, that I hope soon becomes available in its entirety, as well as the Ann Sothern Show. I enjoy viewing the offices, attire, and equipment of a 50's office almost as much as the show itself.

worth watching, Matthew Knight does well as an actor -
16 March 2012
At times, the bad acting of one particular adult actress is painful to watch - it makes one appreciative of when great actresses such as Bette Davis and Ann Sothern performed in kids movies - however, the kid actors all perform well, and the movie does make you think about how dogs see the world.

There are some good scenes throughout the movie - and some of the adult actors perform well.

Overall, worth watching, not one of the best kids movies - but I think it would entertain most kids, even if older kids would smirk at the bad acting of one of the "villains" and some of the minor adult roles.

One of the best superhero movies of all time!
23 June 2011
I love this movie! The Superhero is very imperfect, a partying playboy who is disgusted with this newspaper magnate dads hardness and perfect image.

Both heroes seem to be nerds in their own right, yet both blend together to make really good superheroes as they draw on each others strengths.

Of course the Black Beauty is awesome - growing up with the 60's TV series who didn't love these old 65 Chryslers with their glassed-in headlights - as well as the fact that the Black Beauty had about every imaginable gadget you could conceive - in the series I believe it had silent and invisible mode, as well as every type of weapon.

To me, this movie had so many cool messages - the son coming to grip with his dad not being the creep he thought he was - and yet, dad's not being perfect either, dad giving in to his faults, then trying to make things right again. Plus the political angles, the crime data, etc - all make this one cool movie that makes you think a lot.

I loved it, this is a movie I will want to pick up and own, instead of just renting it is I did tonight.

worth watching for Charles Lane, Ann Sothern, etc
14 June 2011
I know Ann Sothern wasn't wild about this film - but for me, it was worth watching for the performances of Charles Lane and Ann Sothern - it wasn't a high budget film, and some performances surely could have been better - but it still made me laugh in places. Some parts such as the old r.v. were humorous - many of us remember some budget models such as this that we had used.

Not one of Ann Sothern's best works - her last movie "the Whales of August" was fantastic, as well as her TV series "the Ann Sothern show" and "susie" or "executive secretary" as it was originally called.

And of course Charles Lane is such a great actor - how many years has his career spanned?

I liked it a great deal! Bela is always worth watching, as is the rest of the cast!
8 May 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I really liked this movie, though a bit depressing in the beginning. It leaves unanswered questions - was Bela's character just mad from the beginning? Was his wife (or ex-wife) behind the killings? How is he "drawn" to her, without seeing her - then to see her outside the window? What exactly happened "7 years ago" -

I thought the filming was excellent also, I always enjoy seeing the old houses of yesteryear - and the great old furnishings.

Clarence Muse was excellent as the butler, and I read where he went on to go great things after this movie.

I didn't think I would like this movie from what I read of the description, I only watched it because it came on the same DVD as "The Ghost Walks" - whose character actors I just love.

I don't agree with the poster who said to watch "the invisible ghost" with the sound turned off - it is a great movie.

I loved this movie - the Chipmunks Rule!
29 December 2010
I loved this movie! It often is quite witty, with good writing - and to me the animation of the chipmunks and chippette's steals the show - I love watching how they got the mannerisms and facial expressions down. This movie is just plain fun.

It is awesome to watch movies where the cast seems to have such a good time portraying their characters. Also the parody of the rock star status symbol is hilarious.

Now that I have seen this one, I will have to eventually dig up the original Chipmunks movie to see how that one compares. A plus to watching a great animated movie like this is to compare over the years how animation has changed - to see what they are able to do now, and compare it to animation works of years past, which often for their day was groundbreaking.

Definitely worth watching
4 August 2010
This was my absolute favorite of the Alfred Hitchcock and the 3 investigators series - the book is a fantastic, I actually picked up a used copy a few years ago just to re-read one of my childhood favorites.

The movie does not do justice to the book - While I thought the character actors/actresses were great, the acting of the sheriff left something to be desired -

I also hated to see the movie re-written to have the destruction of this terrific castle at the end - but the sets were great - I loved seeing the way the castle was designed.

Hopefully we will see more of the 3 investigators series, with better writing, and more attention to the other minor roles, with better acting and lines.

Dorothy Lyman is in this episode?
6 August 2008
I believe I saw Dorothy Lyman as the character that was going to be "made into a star" by Adrienne Barbeau after the death of the current star of the product investigation type show.

Dorothy Lyman I became aware of when watching Mama's Family, with Vicki Lawrence.

She is a great character actress, wih a very expressive face - and plays quite a range of characters. I found it odd she was not listed with the rest of the cast of characters, even when you clicked on the link for "more".

Overall, I love this episode, though I tend to love all of Murder She Wrote, watching it is kind of like visiting old friends.

A classic for all times - with some adult humor -
17 September 2007
Those who love Elivra as I did in her late night movie hostess duties will love this movie - she is just plain cool - her car is great, and she is a bit of a Transylvanian Dolly Parton - she is so innocent and naive at times - and sexy all of the time - plus, more than a touch of Mae West -

The sets are well done as well, and the comic cast is great, with Edie McClurg at her usual best - plus Sally Kellerman as Patty is hilarious. Any time I have to crunch something for a topping, I will think of how Elvira crunches the potato chips -

This movie is one to be watched again and again - just for the fun of it. Now I have to get the sequel to it, Elvira's Haunted Hills, and see if it lives up to this one ----

Dirigible (1931)
10/10
Part of our history, a must see!
16 September 2007
This film shows via a entertaining story how different air travel may have been if the dirigible had not had the terrible Hindenburg disaster, which was about 4 years after this movie was shot, and when trying to land in the same area as the hanger shown in the movie. Only recently it was found that the real problem with the Hindenburg apparently was individual panels not been grounded, and a fabric covering that was extremely flammable - a dangerous mistake.

It is fascinating to see the Navy equipment of 1931, the dirigible shown is real. These machines may have been much more fuel efficient than airplanes, and perhaps better suited for many trips -

And or course, Fay Wray is a great actress as usual, as is the rest of the cast.

Again, why was this show axed? It is fantastic!
20 January 2007
I love this show, I have recently found it on KPBS - it is a very nice change from typical American TV fare - it is very well written, and the acting of the main cast, as well as the guest actors, is all top-notch - you quickly love these two women, both admiring them and feeling for the struggles life has thrown at them - they are a charming, feisty duo!

The scenery is breathtaking as they go from place to place, and makes one in America feel like a world traveler -

I hope ITV will change its mind on canceling this series, or that KPBS will pick up the tab to film this show itself -

a must - see movie!
25 December 2006
I loved this movie! It seems complex, the hard-working automotive factory owner, who finally decides to sell, and appease his wife who has always wanted to travel, who is bored with the live of staying in town, in the house all the time. She feels life is passing her by, and she is stagnating. He wants to make his wife happy, but has to deal with her having an affair, and can he trust her now? At what point does he say that divorce is the answer? I like that fact that this movie ends on fairly positive note, with out both people hating each other - which is how I believe relationships should be able to end, with neither party hating the other.

Also, the woman who wants to be the other woman in the mans life gives a spectacular performance - you quickly warm to her as a wonderful person.

a holiday classic of all time!
25 December 2006
This movie is fantastic, both in its original black and white version, and in the colorized version - I do wish they would show the credits at the end of the movie however, I had to hop on the IMDb site to see more about John Payne, and who played Kris Kringle, and more about Thelma Ritter.

Maureen O'Hara, Edmund Gwynn, Natalie Wood, and John Payne and Thelma Ritter all gave great performances - as did the drunken Santa Claus at the beginning of the movie, Percy someone - whose voice I remembered, and who was also in so many shows and movies. This movie brings up so many points, commercialism, business rivalries, politics, faith, believing only in what you see yourself, and many others.

This movie is great for the whole family, and does make you think about so many things. Plus, I love seeing the business equipment of almost 60 years ago, and styles of furniture, apartments, cars and clothes.

I would love to see an update of this show!
13 September 2006
I thought this show was excellent - Loni Anderson was great as a showgirl who married a young rich husband - who unfortunately passed away - leaving her to defend herself against the remaining family members of her late husband, who want her to get none of the money, and to simply be out of the picture. While she wants to be fair, she intends to take care of herself also, and not be pushed out of what is rightfully hers.

The supporting cast was fantastic, though I wish I could remember the names - James Cromwell was the yuppie husband of his evil socialite wife, who is a great actress. Jack Elam was fantastic, and had he not passed away a couple of years back, would have been great to have seen in an update.

I thought this show was intelligent - it showed some of the world of the "snobs" - including some of the very real pressures on them, in a very comical setting. And of course, Loni Anderson looked great!

one of the best movies of all times!
13 August 2004
This movie has so many twists and turns - you may think you have it figured out very early on, but soon discover that things don't seem quite as they may appear - this is not a simple movie! Very cleverly written, with superb acting on the part of the staff, both in the major and minor rolls!

This would be an excellent addition to anyones film library, a good movie to take out for others to see who may not be familiar with old movies - or for those who are!

This was a movie where I had to immediately check the IMOB database to find out details on who everyone was after I watched it (on TMC on TV, which doesn't air credits after the old movies - good commentary, but I had to know "who played Mrs. Danvers" - Dame Judith Anderson!

a fantastic series! It had everything, comedy, ghosts, romance
24 July 2004
This is where I first remember being introduced to the comedy of Charles Nelson Reilly, a first-rate actor! This series kept me spellbound, with the usual fascination of ghosts and old houses as a young child, plus the great Hope Lange who would not be scared of this house and stood down the "old captain" that inhabited this house - and who in return had to deal with this new owner that would not go away! This is another show that should be brought back, and that never seems to be seen anymore, leaving one to wonder why this series is not brought back with its top-rate talent, and why the network was stupid enough to cancel this series after two seasons? Oh well, at least Charles Nelson Reilly was on Lidsville with Butch Patrick, so us kids could enjoy his comedy more after that!

The Doris Day Show (1968–1973)

I still love to watch this show when it is on!
24 July 2004
I had not seen the Doris Day show since I was very little (about 5) when it was on the air. I saw it listed in the TV Guide oh-so-many years later, and it was fascinating to watch! I love the scenery of the farms (though perhaps so-so writing) -- and later the scenery of her Plymouth Barracuda convertible driving through the beautiful scenery of the city -- this show is worth watching for the cast itself, which consisted of very talented people in comedy. It is worth noting that Doris Day said she did not know she had been signed up for a comedy series until her husband suddenly died - she quickly became producer after the first few scripts.

The Ann Sothern Show (1958–1961)
10/10
One of my all-time favorites!
24 July 2004
When I saw this series many years later, I vaguely remembered occasionally seeing it when I had been sick as a child and missed school - it was in re-runs at that time, during the day. It is so interesting to see this series, and to realize how provocative it was for the time - late 50's and early 60's. I think it was much better than Executive Secretary "renamed Susie" which was the first of her two series. In one episode, Katy realized she could successfully manage the hotel herself, but that she would have to be very unpopular by being forceful with the staff - her quote "I don't want to set the world on fire, just a few of its male citizens" or something similar to that. I love Ann Sothern's comedy!
