Super 8 (2011)
Not bad at all.
I don't quite understand why there are so many people who didn't like this film. I'll admit it had it's unnecessary and cliché moments, but I don't think that it's enough to be getting upset over. I thought this was a wonderful film.
The best part, by far, were the performances of the kids. Elle Fanning, Joel Courtney, Riley Griffiths, Ryan Lee, Zach Mills, and Gabriel Basso all did a fantastic job. Their dialogue was believable and realistic, and just the way they communicated was quite amusing. Several great and funny quotes in this film from the kids. Well done to all of them!
The special effects really were special. The train crash was exaggerated, but a thrilling scene to watch. Listening to how the kids react while watching them escape was very exciting. Not to mention the scenes near the end that take place in the town. Overall, this was a thrilling film.
The ending was a bit strange, and I didn't fully understand why it ended that way until I re-visited the film. Eventually, I understood how and why it ended the way it did. It could've been better, but it was alright.
I'd recommend this film. Especially if you love sci-fi mystery/thrillers. 7/10 stars.
Hugo (2011)
HUGO was like watching a dream.
"If you've ever wondered where your dreams come from, just look around. This is where they're made."
Hugo Cabret's story was told so well that it felt like you were right there with him on his stunning adventure.
For those unfamiliar, this is the story about a young boy named Hugo. He lives inside the walls of a train station in Paris in the 1930's. His father dies, leaving behind a mysterious automaton that, when fixed, can write. Hugo makes it his mission to fix it, believing that it will reveal a message from his father. With the help of an eccentric girl named Isabelle, he tries to uncover a magical mystery about the old man at the toy booth (Isabelle's godfather) and enchanting early films.
I had been looking forward to this film for a very long time, and I was not disappointed at all. I was a bit unsure about the 3D at first, but it turned out to be superb. Every single object became part of the story, and the audience became immersed in this beautiful world created by Martin Scorsese and Brian Selznick. While every member of the cast was brilliant, there are two in particular I'd like to point out.
First, Asa Butterfield as Hugo. He carried the film with perfection and gave a truly incredible performance. His acting was very natural--you could hardly tell he was acting! He did an amazing job of bringing life to a complex, lost, sad character. Asa is one of the most talented young actors I've ever seen; a very likely Oscar nomination in his future.
Last (but certainly not least) is Chloe Grace Moretz. She is another young performer that never fails to amaze me. Chloe nailed the British accent and brilliantly portrayed a bright, energetic Isabelle.
This movie has it all: beautiful visuals, super-talented cast, magic, love, heart, feeling, emotion. Best Picture Nomination for sure, and quite possibly others. Overall, this movie is a must-see. It was the most enjoyable theater experience that I've ever had. The entire theater broke into applause once it ended. This film has something for all ages, and it's really something special.
Especially if you love adventure, mystery, wonder, and have a bright imagination, you will fall in love with this film just like I did.
"Come and dream with me."
Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang (2010)
Absolutely delightful-- I was smiling the entire time.
I sat down to watch this movie with my 7-year-old brother not knowing what to expect having not seen the first "Nanny McPhee." I was surprised about how brilliant this film turned out to be, even though watching it was my decision.
For those who are unfamiliar, this movie is about a woman named Isabel Green. She lives with her three children, and her husband is off fighting in a war. When the Greens' two cousins, the Grays, come for a visit, the five children start causing trouble for Isabel. Who is the one to fix this problem? Nanny McPhee.
With the amazing cast and beautiful acting, I thought this movie was fantastic. It had the right amount of humor and magic to make everything work. During the more serious scenes (mainly the scene with Norman and Cyril after they receive the telegram), I felt the same emotions as the characters.
Though I enjoyed all the characters and cast members, there are a few that stood out to me. Eros Vlahos and Asa Butterfield as Cyril Gray and Norman Green. These two young actors stole the show at most parts! Eros is a great comedy actor, and made me laugh several times. Asa was funny as well, but it was the emotion that he added to the character that made him stand out. Well done to these two boys.
I give this movie an 9/10. The ONLY reason I'm not giving it a full 10/10 is because I think that some things could've been explained just a little better (the only instance I can think of at the moment is when the Greens got the telegram from the war office. I knew what it meant, but I'm not sure if my brother did. Other younger viewers might not understand right away. It is discussed again later on, of course). Other than that, I think this movie was brilliantly made and cast and everything. I would completely recommend this movie to anyone; especially anyone who loves funny, clever, and heartwarming movies.
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)
Fantastic movie-- best out of all of them.
I have been a Harry Potter fan since I started reading the books around 8 years ago. I've seen most of the movies, and this one is by far the best. New characters such as Sirius Black and Remus Lupin are added into the story, and they have important roles in this film.
This is probably the most important movie out of all of them because it explains about the real reason behind the death of Harry's parents. It tells who was really responsible for it.
I think that the actors have also improved since the first two films. I think that Daniel Radcliffe's acting has improved greatly, along with Rupert Grint's and Emma Watson's.
To be honest, I enjoyed just about every second of this movie. It has the right amount of scariness, humor, and emotion. This movie was breathtaking and magical, and I'd recommend it to anyone. I give it 10/10 stars.
The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (2010)
Not particularly impressed...
Trust me, watching this film was not my choice. My friend watched it and she enjoyed it and thought it would be something that I enjoyed. Unfortunately, she was wrong. I never had any interest in the Twilight series, but I thought I'd give this movie a chance just for the heck of it.
First off, I felt that this film was quite pointless. It was also all over the place and sometimes it was difficult to understand what was going on. I guess that the main plot was a war between the vampires and the werewolves, but as far as I remember, it was never explained too well.
Another thing is the cast. While watching this movie, I did not get the impression that Bella was 'whiny' like some people have said. Although, I wasn't particularly impressed with the other cast members either.
Even with that said, there were two performances that I did moderately enjoy. I liked the acting of Xavier Samuel (Riley) and Jodelle Ferland (Bree). From this movie, I can tell that both of them have great potential as actors, and they should be in films that prove that greater than this one.
Overall, this was not a great film. I wouldn't recommend this movie.
