The Grey (2011)
Awesome!
I loved loved loved this movie. I hope the rumors are true about it coming back in October because I think Liam Neeson deserves a best actor nod and I would love to see the director and writers even get some love too because I thought they did a fantastic job. Even Dermot Mulroney and that guy from Walk the Line were really good. Why stop there...Frank Grillo was awesome too! I was excited to see this just based on the trailers but when I read about some of the supporting cast, I was even more ecstatic about it. Lots and lots of jump moments combined with what was a perfect human drama really make for an incredible movie going experience.
Drive (2011)
N.W.R. has come a long way since Pusher. Drive is proof
I caught an independent film called Strings a few months before Drive came out and was amazed at how similar their story lines were when I finally saw Drive. As a huge fan of Strings, I have to say that it's my favorite indie film while Drive has become my favorite "Hollywood Indie Film"...I saw it three times in the theater and then twice now on an Academy screener. Why wasn't this nominated for the Oscar for best picture, direction, screenplay, actor? It has a higher user rating on IMDb than everything except Hugo and The Artist and a higher rating on Rotten Tomatoes than everything but the Artist, Hugo, and the Descendants, so why no love, Academy?
I saw the Pusher trilogy back when they each came out and knew that Nic Refn was on his way to something bigger and I think Drive is finally it. Loved the story, loved the action, and I loved the cinematography. I'm so glad they kept the dialogue to a minimum!
D4 (2011)
Forget the budget, it's the story!
My brother sent me this DVD as a Christmas gift and we finally got around to watching it. I was a little hesitant because monster movies aren't really my thing. It was low budget and I do mean very low budget, but for what they spent on it, they sure did get far. I've seen big budget movies that Hollywood cranks out not come anywhere close to as good in terms of story or pacing but these guys did a really fine job. I read that they shot this in two weeks in the mountains which is pretty darn amazing. Most people have no idea what it means to make a movie but my boyfriend and I are avid film buffs and we've learned a lot about indie filmmaking after watching boatloads of flicks at film festivals all over the country (he drives a truck and sometimes I tag along and we catch festivals occasionally)....well needless to say, a lot of people hate on movies because they just want to be picky but I've certainly come to appreciate every level of movie but the one thing I've learned that matters the most is the story. I read a little about D-4 right before we watched it and I found out about the director's son being an epileptic and that being the inspiration for the monster in the movie...now i don't know about you but that is just sad and inspiring at the same time. How many horror movies or action movies take the time to put a piece of themselves up there on the screen? I'm going to watch D-4 again with my parents because I think they would really like it if I told them about the metaphors in it.
Strings (2011)
Unpredictable thriller with a heart! Not what we expected
My boyfriend and I caught STRINGS at the Long Island Film Expo a couple weeks ago and have been talking about it ever since. There's something about this movie that sits with you for a while, kind of like Memento and the Salton Sea. Maybe it's the heavily-tattooed protagonist being soft-spoken and having women issues in all three of them :) It didn't feel like an independent movie at all, the pacing and production quality were Hollywood caliber and the story was something that, for the first time in years, my boyfriend said "I've never seen a movie like that"....I wish we could buy a DVD! We've told all our friends about it and getting to meet the talented filmmakers was such a great experience. The cast was incredible, the story was incredible, the directing was incredible, I can't say enough good things about this movie. If the STRINGS people are reading this, thank you for making my boyfriend cry!
