Zoey 101 (2005)
Quite entertaining but why?
Zoey is a very popular girl at PCA and everything seems to be happening to her but she always can find the right thing to do to solve every problem. She is blond, she is Britney Spears' little sister and she is Chase Matthews' crush since the first season. Many reviews state that because of these reasons, this show is very bad.
It is not though! It is indeed not an accurate portrayal of boarding schools but it is just a TV series, not a documentary. Funny and entertaining it teaches young children to behave in the right way, to never lie and it reflects the importance of having good friends by your side.I do not see the difference between this series and Hannah Montana, Zack and Cody and other Disney Channel classics.
If we then talk about the cinematography then I would like to point out that it is quite bad, the acting is sometimes not realistic enough and at times the editing reveals to be too dull. I would give it a 6 mostly because of Jamie Lynn Spears' acting at times and because she should be aware at least by season 2 that Chase is in love with her! Girls are not that stupid!
However, I am 21 and enjoy watching some episodes after a rough day on dissertations and seminars as it is indeed quite funny and something positively different from the shows that are on today.
American Beauty (1999)
"American.... mid-life crisis"?
American Beauty (1999): 5 academy awards, recognized all over the world as a great masterpiece, wonderful rating by famous critiques. My expectations were probably too high and that could be one of the reasons that pushes me to say that, in my opinion, other movies should have deserved an Oscar in 2000. The story-line is based on a Married man who fantasizes to sleep with the girl friend of his daughter. The plot alone is quite troubling. Every character seems to be mentally in-stable but it is in fact portrayed all as mid-life crisis.
Nevertheless, there are some wonderful scenes such as the ending one and the philosophical ones which bring out important quotes. In this movie alone there is also a recurrent editing technique which is used to slow down central scenes. This technique focuses on one movement and cuts back and forth to repeat it several times, only after this can the story continue. Additionally, the music by Thomas Newman is fantastic.
Personally, this movie is very similar to Donnie Darko (2001) in terms of mental instability. I do prefer though Richard Kelly's movie to American Beauty. Could it be because it actually teaches the meaning of time and coincidences in life, instead of teaching me how to flirt with a 19 years old girl? You tell.
Killing Them Softly (2012)
Killing ME Softly
"I'm living in America. And in America you are on your own".
Brad Pitt appears in the second half of the movie and disconcerts the main characters, emotionally breaking their permanent safety. Characters personality evolves with the events that follow in the storyline while a glimpse of American political background accompanies this crime fiction. According to the trailer and the adverts Pitt should have been the most important figure in "Killing them softly" while he is not. The movie should have also been a thriller although the scarcity of action and the constant strong language make it an in vane intent in getting the audience's attention. A sudden car explosion attempts to make the public laugh is immediately followed by another long and useless conversation with swear words and sexual references. If there is a message in this movie it failed to reach me considering that the best quotes are hardly related to the plot.
Blade Runner (1982)
Blade runner is not a perfect movie but it has its merits..
What I have noticed throughout the reviews is that Blade Runner is highly rated or poorly rated. Some say that it is a recognized spectacular science-based movie and others say that it is just a poor adaptation of the book by Philip K Dick "Do androids dream of electronic sheep". I find myself in between these two types of critiques.
I feel that this movie is useful for film directors as it enhance the use of some techniques that were rarely seen at the time Blade Runner came out (1982) . But other than beautifully made special effects (for example to create the LA of the future) and Vangelis's soundtrack I don't personally like the story's narration. The approach to the year 2019 is poorly explained, we are immersed in a future that is foreign to us and have little description to understand it. The Replicants are robots created to help humans but inevitably end up showing some emotions (as Rachel) and the blade runner (Harrison Ford) tries to catch a glimpse of this humanity in them because astonished by it. In close ups it is shown how actors perfectly control their face expressions; their performance is excellent throughout the movie. The problem remains that when the audience comes at the end of the movie some questions are left unanswered. In the movie Pris tells Sebastian: "is that why you are still on Earth?" humans are in this Off-World place.. but since when? and why? We don't get any deep description of any action or any character. There is a restricted narrative because the audience in 1982 is mesmerized by this future, science-fiction movies always have this power to amaze with their special effects and with their frequent jump cuts.
This movie has to be deeply analyzed and frequently watched to understand it completely. I feel that the people that rate it really low haven't watched this movie enough. But to give it a 10 I would disagree for the reasons discussed earlier.
