The Orville: Mortality Paradox (2022)
Season 3 getting better, after a poor start
This is basically an Orville version of an ST:TNG Q episode, where a god-like creature experiments on crew members to better understand them and their experiences. Nice touch to bring it back to the earlier episode about the phasing planet, and what happened to the inhabitants who experience 700yrs every few weeks of our time. Those folks are still developing and not subjected to the 'reset of the week' phenomenon, which was the lazy way TNG did things.
I thought the illusions were too long and drawn out and the revelation of the person with the god-like powers too long in the waiting. The quirky comedy elements that were so good in seasons 1 and 2 are also lacking here.
Noughts + Crosses (2020)
No depth
I agree with the earlier comments about lack of depth. Read the synopsis and imagine how it is fleshed out --- and you've got it. Heavy handed moralising.
Succession (2018)
A good binge-watch
Great one for bingeing - then it's easier to follow the many story threads. Some of the threads turn out to be not very significant, but I guess this is like real-life business, where you're not sure what's going to pan out and what isn't. I'm not sure the portrayal of the Republican brother as a dumb idiot is entirely fair and will put many off. Brian Cox is stand-out suberb, and many of the other actors give great performances
Devs (2020)
Interesting, but fanciful
Devs leads you on.... you think it's going to be great - in the end it's OK at best. The science is fanciful. Ignores Chaos theory (as does Asimov's Foundation, but you can forgive Asimov based on when he was writing). So, apart from the obvious tech consultants employed and injecting some good ideas, this has the stamp of liberal-arts Sci-Fi.
Black Mirror: USS Callister (2017)
Common false trope about clones
Sigh - DNA doesn't contain a persons memories, so a DNA clone (even a digital one) is no more a copy than a twin is. After having her DNA cloned into a digital copy, the character wakes up in the game universe with all her memories intact, right up to the previous day.
This seems to come from the school of liberal-arts sci-fi, where the writer doesn't understand the science and chooses to explore concepts that are fantasy, but dressed up as a warning of what could happen in the near future.
Contact (1997)
A must see - ignore the bad bits!
Deeply flawed, annoying, must-see, masterpiece of a film. One of the best films of all time. Terrible clichés mixed with inspiring visions that will uplift and change your perspective on life and the universe. It's a bit dated now, but still stands up well. Based on the book by Carl Sagan.
Just watch it OK?
