Waste of time
11 August 2005
Usually the film remakes of 'classic' TV shows are nowhere near the standard of the TV version.

Now I have to be honest and say that I haven't seen this movie. The reason is simple - the TV show was the most stupid, mind-numbingly ridiculous pile of trash that has ever disgraced a TV screen. That being so, the rule I mentioned above means that film version will be even more execrable. To think that the BBC dropped 'The Rockford Files' to show this drivel still, after 25 years, amazes me. The only good thing about the TV series was Catherine Bach.

Perhaps the funniest thing about this big screen version was a comment by one of the actors from the TV version. He thought the movie spoiled a 'classic' TV show ! Fatuous would be a more apt description.

Hasn't anybody noticed ?
7 June 2005
I know Hollywoods propensity for retreading or rehashing earlier films - it's so much easier than thinking - but hasn't anyone noticed that the 'plot' is a complete rip-off of the 1985 film 'Prizzi's Honour' made with Kathleen Turner and Jack Nicholson, which was in turn taken from the novel by the brilliant, late, writer Richard Condon. At least the remake of his novel 'The Manchurian Candidate' last year gave some acknowledgement even though it was probably far inferior to the Harvey/Sinatra film of 1959.

I'll probably go to see this but I doubt if it will be a patch on the Turner/Nicholson film.

Stargate SG-1 (1997–2007)
Over-rated ?
20 May 2005
This is now on rerun on Sky in the UK. I watch it from time to time, but only make a point of seeing it if Mel Harris from thirtysomething is in it as Oma Desala. I suppose it's reasonably entertaining but as a sci fi fan ( I belong to the third group of StarWars people - I think they are all rubbish ) I don't think it is as cutting edge as the avid fan seems to think. Something that spoils it are slightly ridiculous alien character, many of whom look like refugees from a seance. Also the weapons the bad guys carry are just ridiculous - as bad as the hand phasers in Sar Trek.

I should say I've never seen the original film, and haven't got into all the mythology behind it.

Cold Feet (1997–2020)
The Midlands ?
3 December 2004
Cold Feet was set in the north west of England, in Manchester, not the Midlands.

We found it just as good as everyone has said. Funny, touching, sad, and well acted & staged. So much so that we bought the full DVD set when it finished.

The only thing that I would say is that it seemed to use many of the situations that were used in 'thirtysomething' ( finest ensemble drama series ever !), and sometimes came very close to the actual stories in 'ts'. You could say that thius was natural, dealing with the same type of people, but it was a bit naughty.

Thirtysomething (1987–1991)
Much Missed
24 July 2004
Finest ensemble drama series I have ever seen. It's 13 years since it finished yet it's still keenly missed by it's many devotees. Ths is made worse because it's not available on video or DVD, unlike other series' made by it's creators.

It suffered from the label of being 'yuppie' & 'whiney', probably because the first series took a little time to settle into a rhythm. Yet it was anything but, being both serious and funny about the issues which affect everyone. Yet it never descended into a soap opera and the acting, writing and staging was of a consistently high standard. It's a pity that it ended so suddenly, without a real resolution.

Alias (2001–2006)
I've only just started
1 July 2004
to watch series 3, not having seen it before, but I find it very enjoyable. Of course the plots are full of holes, but I don't think the acting is that bad. Take it for what it is - a bit of silly entertainment. I also like all the spurious gadgetry that the character Marshall is able to put together at little or no notice whatsoever. Q would be wildly jealous !

It's a shame that when I watch the first two series I will already know many of the plot twists, but I'll still make the effort to see them. Anyway, anything that Ken Olin (thirtysomething ) is involved with as director and producer can't be that bad.

Van Helsing (2004)
Non stop Nonsense
10 May 2004
Overblown action, little plot, awful dialogue and poor characterisation, with stock figures such as 'Carl' make this a very poor effort. For much of the film I thought I was seeing a very inferior version of LOTR. Stunning though Kate Beckinsale looked, even that was not a good enough reason to see this film. I liked both the 'Mummy' films, and know that this shouldn't be taken seriously, but it should at least be done well. Please don't make a sequel - though given the quite full theatre I saw it in, I've no doubt that they will. Surely it can't be any worse that this ?

Btw - who was doing Mr Hyde in Notre Dame ? I couldn't remember his name, but his face rang a bell !
