Hidden Agenda (2001)
4/10
One of better Dolph Lundgren movies
3 July 2019
I expected nothing from this straight to DVD thriller , especially remembering how painful were Lundgren earlier thriller efforts "Cover up" and "Jill ripps". I was somewhat pleasantly surprised . I've got something. One should not mistake "Hidden agenda" with a great movie , but it's reasonably entertaining time waster for a B-movie.

The plot seems to be inspired by the movie "Eraser" , however unlike Schwarzenegger movie it focuses more on the story than action set pieces (maybe because of the low budget) . This is techno thriller with only some action scenes here and there. Average action junkie might be disappointed. The movie actually feels realistic , something like this could happen in real life and that's a big plus for me.

The plot is fairly intelligent. The movie does make sense but it's unfortunately a little bit hard to follow . The main plot twist was too obvious and at the end the story gets muddled. This is one of those films where you can't tell the bad people from the good, so everyone is suspect. It kinda feels like there are too many characters in this movie. At the end not everything feels resolved and not every character motivations are clear. Big minus for that.

Lundgren gives a fine performance. It must have been a treat for him to play smart and classy guy , not muscle man. He gives his character Jason Price enough charm and intelligence to make audience care for him. Maxim Roy is very hot as the femme fatale and gives a okay performance. The rest of the cast is not bad , but nothing to write home about.

Director Marc S. Grenier obviously works on limited budget , but somehow manages to give this movie a certain atmosphere (the snow keeps falling all the time , the shots of city traffic are sped up ). Sadly , he fails when it comes to action scenes. The opening chase at the airport is decent , but things go downhill from there. The action scenes are badly "Matrix" stylized and the camera work is too shaky. The final gun battle is also poorly staged. In the end the action is below average.

The music is pretty cool . It's a quite catchy electronic score . The few CGI effects look like taken from 90's movie. The dialogues are decent.

Anyway , for a B-movie it does what it promises - provides harmless entertainment for one night. Compared to some other Lundgren movies (especially the rest of his DTV stuff) "Hidden agenda" is a quality movie. It remains one of Lundgren's better movies in quite awhile. I give it 4/10. Maybe I'm too harsh , if you're a Lundgren fan , give it one star more.

Kickboxer (1989)
6/10
The Muscles from Brussels goes to Thailand
11 September 2018
This is one of best Van Damme movies right there with "Bloodsport". In some ways I like "Kickboxer" even more than "Bloodsport". It's a simple revenge story that makes a good use of Van Damme's fighting skills. In this movie we explore the martial arts fundamentals of Muay Thai. It's the national sport of Thailand, where the fighter will condition his body so that his arms and legs become weapons capable of delivering blows, kicks in particular, that are three times as powerful as that of any ordinary martial artist. He'll also use his feet, fists, shins, and elbows too. It's the de facto fighting style for mixed martial arts.

The acting here is a mixed bag. Van Damme is very hammy and Dennis Alexio has no talent at all . On the other hand Dennis Chan is a good copy of Mr. Myiagi from "Karate kid" as Xian Chow and Haskell V. Anderson III is fun as Winston Taylor a retired Vietnam War veteran. Let's not forget about Michel Qissi who is unforgettable as the main villain - Tong Po. Tong Po is mistakenly billed as playing himself (on the film's credits). Qissi can also be seen in two other Van Damme movies "Bloodsport" and "Lionheart". He also appeared in sequel to this movie - "Kickboxer 2".

There are some really cool scenes here - Van Damme training with the dog , the drunk fight in the bar , Van Damme and the palm , final fight with the hands bound with glass. The soundtrack here is unfortunately forgettable and can't compare to the one in "Bloodsport".

I give it 6/10. "Kickboxer" is a cheesy , lighthearted , entertaining little action movie. A small classic. Co-directed by Mark DiSalle and David Worth it's well paced with nice fight scenes. The producers decided to franchise out this series. Other movies are unwatchable. Stick with this fun little time waster.

Wild Things: Foursome (2010 Video)
1/10
One , two , three , four aaaaaand enough
10 September 2018
The first "Wild things" was hardy a classic . Nobody really wanted a sequel, but Hollywood still made 2 crappy straight to DVD movies. The sequels were INCREDIBLY LAZY. They were basically remakes of the first movie only with small changes in script and of course anonymous cast . I guess they did make some money , because Hollywood made one more.

What's the difference between this movie and the earlier ones ? Hint: it's in the title. Yep, guy has a sex with 3 women this time , not with 2. The rest ? EVERYTHING ELSE IS JUST THE SAME. If you find this movie to be clever or surprising , well , then clearly something is wrong with you.

The first movie had Kevin Bacon , Bill Murray , Denise Richards and Neve Campbell. Good actors and hot women. The sex scene was great and there was quite a lot of erotic tension too.

Here the direction is unremarkable , the screenplay is flat and predictable. There is only one sex scene here (the foursome) and although it's nice it can't hold a candle to the original threesome from the first movie. The girls are quite pretty , but when it comes to acting ,wait , what acting ? The only actor from this movie that interested me was a guy named Ashley Parker Angel. This dude should seriously change his name , unless he is interested in making career in porn.

I don't remember too much from this movie. The whole movie is so uninspired and uninteresting that I can recommend it only for sex maniacs (who probably were the main target for this movie anyway). I give it 1/10.

Raw Deal (1986)
4/10
One of Schwarzenegger lesser movies , but offers some entertainment
9 September 2018
"Raw deal" is a rather forgotten movie in Arnold's movie career. It's not strange , when you compare it to the hits like "Conan The Barbarian" , "Terminator" or "Predator ". Even lesser movies like "The Running man" and "Commando" easily overshadow this flick. However , it doesn't mean that you can have some fun with this flick.

Arnold Schwarzenegger only agreed to star in this picture after much haggling in exchange for dissolving his multi-picture agreement with Dino De Laurentiis. He had one picture left with the producer and was actually very interested in doing "Total recall" , but De Laurentiis objected, so "Raw deal " was made instead (Thankfully we still got "Total recall" made few years later).

The budget probably was rather low , because the production values are rather poor. "RD" looks more like one of those Cannon/Golan-Globus production than a Schwarzenegger movie. The editing is pretty bad.

The other problem is that the movie has some identity crisis. The basic plot premise ( cop goes undercover) begs for a serious tone , depth and complex story. None of which appears here. So , it's no "Donnie Brasco" or "License to kill" . Arnold looks like he is trapped in a cop thriller that would suit better Chuck Norris or Rutger Hauer. He seems wasted here. The plot is a mess with plot holes , unnecessary filler scenes and action scenes that seem out of place. Oh and the ending is one of the cheesiest in action movie history.

The action is strangely uninspired . Action scenes appear without any real rhyme or reason. They aren't also anything special with the exception of ending. At the end of the movie we have 20 minutes long bullet fest that obviously wants to imitate the climax of "Commando". While not exactly well staged and edited it's fun to watch (for all the right and wrong reasons).

Arnold is obviously lacking in acting skills. He learned how to give good low key performances with "Predator", but before that he was very bad at acting. Here he is horrendous in dramatic scenes . In his defence his one liners are often pure gold ("You should not drink and bake").The supporting cast (Robert Davi , Kathryn Harrold , Darren McGavin) is pretty good.

The rock music is fun and the use of Rolling Stones "Satisfaction" was brilliant. The pacing by director John Irvin ("Dogs of war") is not bad .

I give it 4/10. "Raw deal" its not Arnold's worst movie from the 80's ("Conan The Destroyer" and "Red Sonja" anyone ?) and is not his worst movie overall. Any Schwarzenegger completist will want to have it, and will probably find much to enjoy. Even if it's pretty forgettable movie overall.

Easy to swallow and easy to forget schlock
13 July 2018
This is a disappointing movie. The story had really interesting premise and despite low budget this could have been a good old - fashioned thriller. Unfortunately, the stupidity of the movie just gets bigger and bigger until the very end. This is a true treasure for anyone who likes to laugh at stupid movies.

Do you remember Chuck Norris jokes ? Forget about them . Here in this movie Ron Silver does things that would make James Bond blush. He can run and smoke simultaneously , hide from enemies EVEN IF THEY SAW HIM HIDING , shoots and kicks ass like a pro (despite being a middle aged reporter with NO experience with guns or martial arts) , all sexy females are attracted to him (for no real reason) , the bad guys keep making stupid mistakes, can't shoot straight ... I could go on and on. Oh boy, the plot twist about the location of the diamond and oh boy , the deus ex machina at the end... You have to see them to believe it. I will definitely never forget about them. Yup, they are THAT BAD.

The movie has some Polish actors in it and the plot is partially set in Poland. I'm from Poland so for me it was an added bonus ( and of course the main reason to watch this movie in first place). The pacing is fast , the dialogues are often not bad , the music is decent (even if cheesy at times).

Ron Silver ("Timecop") gives a "I don't give a crap" performance . He basically doesn't act , only speaks his lines. Roy Scheider ("Jaws") a good actor who somehow ended in B-movies appears here for about 5 minutes , but gives an adequate performance. Same goes for Joanna Pacula ("Gorky park"). Too bad that the sex scene was cut out of the movie. The worst performance belongs to Elizabeth Sheppard who painfully overacts and the best to Jan Rubes who is truly demonic Nazi.

This is definitely not a boring movie or the worst movie I have seen. If you want entertainment without quality you might watch it. Otherwise , just skip it. I give it 2/10.

Female Jack Ripper story ?
7 July 2018
The movie is also known uder the title Tied up . This movie seems to be a blend of Basic Instinct and 8MM . It's based on a book , but from what I've heard only very loosely. The movie is set in 1977 , but why exactly ? ? It could have easily been set in the present day with absolutely no changes to the plot. I don't know , maybe the moviemakers wanted to feel original or something.

There are two good things in this movie. The snow covered Toronto is a really good location that helps to create a dark mood. Also the acting of Dolph Lundgren and Danielle Brett is REALLY solid. Especially Dolph shows here that he has got a reasonable talent and you start to wonder what if he played in better movies with better roles ? He deserves more credit for his acting skills. Also I respect that he wanted to do something different than action movie - an erotic thriller where the action is non-existent.

Unfortunately that's the end of good things. There is a horrible performance by Victor Pedtrchenko who plays Polish (?) pimp. The movie feels too long , despite being only 94 minutes long. There are several parts of the movie where it seems that footage is missing. The solution to the mystery is obvious for anyone with half of brain. Ironically , the plot itself either drags in places (the investigation of the brother's employer) or is incomprehensible. Character motivations are confusing. There is no sense of suspense. The story is campy and feels like it belongs more to a porn movie than serious thriller. The film is needlessly gory and ridiculous. How anyone could take this stuff seriously ? It's not sexy and often unintentionally funny. It's unpleasant at best. A rather boring , over serious , cheap shock thriller.

I give it 1/10.

Unusual setting for typical VHS era action flick
7 July 2018
This movie is known under titles "Aniol smierci" ("Angel of death") , "Beyond forgivness" and "Blood of innocence". The main star here is Thomas Ian Griffith (brother of actress Melanie Griffith) who never made a success and forever will be associated with third rate action cinema. The cast also includes the cult actor Rutger Hauer ("Blade runner") and John Rhys Davies ("LOTR" trilogy). Polish movie fans will also recognize some familiar faces like the very attractive Joanna Trzepiecinska (the love interest) , Artur Zmijewski (the brother of main hero) and Leon Niemczyk (the priest).

This movie is a combined American-Polish effort. The main hero is American with Polish roots and the action of the almost entire movie takes place in Poland. It felt very refreshing , since action movies usually take place either in USA or more exotic/popular countries.

I'm from Poland , so I had great fun watching familiar places and faces appear on the screen. However outside of that there isn't really that much to say about this movie. The acting is very OK (especially Davies is truly charming) , the plot makes sense and the dialogues aren't bad. The problem is this is genuinely forgettable movie. The plot isn't anything different you haven't seen before in thousands of "cop on revenge" movies , the characters are one dimensional , the budget is obviously low and the action is very anemic. It's your typical undemanding straight to VHS (straight to DVD nowadays) 90's action flick. Maybe I'm too harsh for it , because I have seen MUCH worse movies and if you want some undemanding movie to kill some time it's not a bad choice.

Action junkies should be satisfied. People with higher standards should look for something else. I give it 2/10.

The best action comedy of all time - Murphy's best movie
24 June 2018
This classic 80's movie could easily have turned out to be a complete mess. The first draft of the movie was finished in 1977. The shooting script was literally pasted together from the half dozen or so scripts written for this project over the years. At one point Axel Foley was going to be played by Sylvester Stallone. It was supposed to be a much darker revenge movie . Two weeks before filming was to start Stallone left the project and used some of his script ideas to make "Cobra" ( a masterpiece of cheesy B-class action cinema). Then miracle happened in the form of Eddie Murphy.

When Eddie Murphy was hired he started making massive rewrites to the script. It's also interesting that Murphy as well as John Ashton and Judge Reinhold improvised their lines of dialogue and even some scenes. The filming was hectic and even the moviemakers didn't had any clue what will be the end result. Thankfully a combination of accident , luck and genuine filmmaking enthusiasm gave a birth to a great movie.

"Beverly Hills cop" is the very definition of a "star vehicle," a movie that's nothing without its main star. Eddie Murphy is pure gold as Axel Foley - one of the most likeable characters in cinema. He is cool , quick-witted , sarcastic , street smart. He usually uses his brain and smooth talking to get out of trouble . He's not your typical tough guy and that what makes him interesting. You could compare him to Bugs Bunny (which is not a bad thing).

Murphy is the driving force behind the film, no doubt about it. However , he does have a good support here. John Ashton ("Midnight run") and Judge Reinhold ("Fast times at Ridgemont High") as the grumpy Taggart and naïve Rosewood have great chemistry together and pretty much deserve their own movie. Bronson Pinchot as the art curator has small but very memorable part. Ronny Cox ("Robocop") plays a rare for him role of good guy . Lisa Eilbacher is good eye candy. Jonathan Banks ("48 hours") is quite chilling as the bad guy. The only downside is the boring main villain played by Steven Berkoff ("Octopussy").

The plot is pretty much your standard buddy cop movie. It is however also a fish out of water story with some social commentary. The contrast between the different methods of crime and cop life in Detroit and LA works very well. The movie also doesn't have any romance or racial comparisons which gives it a fresh feel. The dialogues and one liners are sharply written and funny. There isn't really much of mystery here and some moments are obviously unrealistic, but it's very easy to ignore.

"BHC" has a pretty strong soundtrack . "Axel F" by Harold Faltermeyer is a true classic. It's cool , bouncy and infectious - just like the main character. I don't think there's a person on Earth that doesn't recognize it. Don't forget about other great songs : Glenn Frey "The Heat is on" , Patti LaBelle "Stir it up" and Pointer Sisters "Neutron dance". Overall , the soundtrack is a great blend of pop-rock from the 80's.

It's surprising that Martin Scorsese was offered the chance to direct , but turned it down. The director Martin Brest was hired and it was a wise decision. Brest turned out to be a expert when it comes to action-comedies with "Beverly Hills Cop" and later with De Niro/Grodin movie "Midnight run". He skillfully blends action with comedy and creates a sense of lightherted adventure.

I give it 8/10. An immensely enjoyable film. It captures everything that was the best about the 80's. It might be a standard movie , but one that doesn't feel mechanical and simply works. There's a real camaraderie between Murphy , Ashton and Reinhold here. The chemistry feels real , the humor works , the action is good. In the long line of action comedies/buddy cop movies (that started in 1982 with "48 hours" also with Murphy) this is the best one.

The Wild One (1953)
3/10
Not wild , but lame , predictable and artificial
24 June 2018
This 1953 movie might be the first biker movie ever made. The plot for the movie is loosely based on a real event. At the very beginning of the movie you will read , that "this is a shocking story. It's a public challenge not to let it happen again". Then you'll hear a voice-over from Brando saying he regrets what happened and that it is a bad memory for him.

You're getting excited and curious what the hell happened. You're expecting a hardcore tragedy that will shock you and leave you speechless for months. And then...

Nothing. Nothing happened. Nothing really happened in this whole stinking movie. You keep waiting for a plot , but it never arrives. Maybe the movie was really shocking back in the 50's and 60's but from today's point of view ... What the hell was all the fuss about ?!

The story here is pretty much a western. A bunch of Indians...I mean bikers arrive to a small town and get in trouble with local people. The bikers lead by Johnny Strabler (Marlon Brando) all wear black leather jackets . They are rebellious against everything and everyone. Their devotion to Strabler is so big , that you could wonder if they aren't really a bunch of homosexuals on their way to "Blue oyster" ( watch "Police academy").

This is a "misunderstood youth vs. the establishment" movie. WE ARE TOLD by the filmmakers that the loud and obnoxious biker gang are sensitive people that deserve our sympathy. WE ARE TOLD by the filmmakers that the townspeople are intolerant ,brainless mob but the punks aren't . WE ARE TOLD by the filmmakers that we should understood Brando character , despite we never know what he really is rebelling against ("What are you rebelling against, Johnny ? " , - "Whataya got ? ").

Well I don't buy any of that bulls*** , Mr. Stanley Kramer (director of this movie). The story is naive and simplistic, the photography is dull , the editing and pacing are miserable. It's a melodrama , but without any emotional punch (I like good melodramas).

The story takes a cliché turn with Brando falling in love with a local girl . You see , he likes her , but she's from the world he can't accept. He has reputation , you know ? I've seen something like this done better in "Grease". The ending to this romance is as predictable as it could be. Anyone with half of brain will know what to expect from a movie about young rebel.

Brando is great in his role , even if the movie itself suck. He's torn between wanting to fit in and being rebel to the very end. It's obvious that he has desires , but feels the gaze and expectations of everybody around him. His very aware of how others perceive him and his behaviour is pretty much calculated posturing.

Great performance by Brando, also great acting by Lee Marvin (rival biker) , Mary Murphy (local girl) and Jay C. Flippen (county sheriff). The only redeeming aspect of this movie.

An outdated trash ,cliché , artificial , B-movie , nothing more. Bla bla bla about young people searching for freedom , blab la bla adults are hypocrites and so on... There are better movies about misunderstood youth. This is not one of them , even if it has got Marlon Brando. He himself was disappointed with this movie . He said that it failed to explain the roots of young people rebellion. I agree with him. I give it 3/10.

Dark Angel (1990)
5/10
Undemanding , but fun B-class action sci-fi movie
24 June 2018
This project was initially titled "Lethal Contact" (as it was first written in 1984 as a spec script by Jonathan Tydor). A rewrite of the script was penned by writer/director David Koepp ("Jurassic park" , "Spiderman"). The production, filming and international title is "Dark Angel", and was released as such worldwide, before it was changed to "I Come in Peace" for the late U.S. release, because of two other existing movies entitled "The Dark Angel".

The movie was released in 1990 , but it was made in 1988. This explains why it has 80's feel all over it. The cars , haircuts , clothes, music and special effects are all pure 80's , but don't worry. This movie had a 7 mln $ budget and it has dated really well. The production values are more than OK and there is some nice stunt work and decent special effects here. "Dark angel" is a good proof that practical effects are more timeless than CGI effects.

At it's heart "Dark angel" is a buddy cop movie with a little bit of "Terminator" and "Predator" thrown in. Actually it makes me wonder was this movie some sort of inspiration for "Predator 2" ? Anyway , it's better than "Predator 2". This movie probably wouldn't have been made today , because people would say it's too cheesy. Is it cheesy ? Yes , but it's unpretentious and harmless fun. It's also NOT a brainless fun . There is some invention here -(CD disc as a weapon , aliens and drugs). "DA" is also pretty self aware of what kind of movie it is and through the whole movie you can feel a slight auto-parody feel to it ( The "White boys" gang ).

Dolph Lundgren does a admirable job as the main hero making "Dirty Harry" Cain a easy to like character. Brian Benben is also good as his sidekick - Mister "everything by the book". The chemistry between them works well. Matthias Hues is quite memorable and intimidating as the villain. I also liked the actor who plays the wacky scientist and Betsy Brantley as the love interest.

The dialogues and one liners might be the best thing about this movie . They very funny and very quotable : "It's like setting your radio dial to K-I-L-L!" , " I come in peace - And you go back in pieces" and few more. The script is blessed with some witty one-liners.

In terms of action this movie also doesn't disappoints. It might be a movie with the largest number of exploding cars ever. There are also shootouts , some fights. Action fans shouldn't worry.

The music by Jan Hammer ("Miami vice") is cool and catchy. The songs are cheesy , but fun. I like especially the song "Touch me tonight" by Shooting stars.

It's fun , trashy , unpretentious action sci-fi movie . It's not something to put on the "The best science fiction movies ever" list , but the light, comic book style action is a good way to relax after hard day in work. I've heard it's a cult movie in some places and it's not really hard to understand why. A very likeable small movie and one of Lundgren's best. I give it 5/10.

Another s**ty action movie
22 June 2018
Starring Lorenzo Lamas - king of the C-class action movies. The plot ? It's your typical " They killed his family member . They made a BIG MISTAKE. " run of the mill revenge movie. The villain is played by Matthias Hues who I remember from "I come in peace" (aka "Dark angel"). He can't act (just like Lamas) , but he certainly has the look to play the villain.

All in all forgettable stuff. I found this movie in my local supermarket . It cost me 5$ . I regret having to pay for this trash.

I give it 1/10. For action junkies only.

Red Scorpion (1988)
4/10
Lame anti-communistic 80's action movie
21 June 2018
This made in the late 80's action movie seems to be a lower budget clone of the Rambo movies. It is certainly a product of it's time , because you can smell the anti-Soviet propaganda without even watching the movie. Hollywood made quite a few movies about the evil Russians that were actually entertaining ("Rambo 2","Rambo 3" , "Rocky 4" ) and few that were painfully bad ("Red dawn" , "Invasion USA" ). This movie unfortunately belongs to the second category.

Let's start with the good things. The movie is set in Africa , which is actually an original background for action movie. Are they any other action movies set in Africa ? I don't know - only "Shaft in Africa" comes to my mind. This brings a touch of freshness to the movie.

"Red scorpion" also learns us that communism is evil (true) , war is bad (true) and sends a few messages - think for yourself, don't follow blindly the orders , truth might be manipulated and appearances might be deceiving . It's nothing spectacular , but at least it provides some depth to the whole movie.

The relationship between the main hero and the african bushman is silly , cute , funny and even touching at times. Probably the best part of the movie.

The problem with "Red scorpion" is the fact that for an action movie this is rather mundane & boring film. Im' all in for action movie that treats itself seriously , but it was poorly done. A lot of the running time is devoted to Lundgren wondering around as he develops a conscience. The Russians plan doesn't make any sense , just like their further decisions.

The action scenes are done badly. There is a car chase in style of "Raiders of the lost ark" that is ruined by annoying and inappropriate song by Little Richard. It was supposed to be funny - it wasn't. There is a really big shootout in the end , but it isn't exciting. All the bad guy's have terrible aim and can't shoot straight. There is very little blood and violence here. Hand to hand combat or fighting ? Forget it.

This bad movie was directed by Joseph Zito , an expert of making bad propaganda action movies ("Missing in action", "Invasion USA" - both with Chuck Norris).

Dolph Lundgren who plays the main hero Nikolai Rachenko (funny fact - after his breakthrough role of Ivan Drago in "Rocky 4" here he gets to play another Russian) is passable. M. Emmet Walsh (" Blade runner ") plays an American photographer and is terribly annoying and unfunny. Brion James (" Tango and Cash ") makes an appearance , but sadly disappears at the end of the movie without any explanation ! What a waste. Everybody else give poor performances.

I don't really recommend this movie. Not even for the action junkies . I rather recommend watching one of the Rambo movies. Still it's a little bit better than most of Lundgren movies. There was a sequel in the 90's , but it had very loose connection to this movie. I give it 4/10.

The Swordsman (1992)

Dreadful , absolutely dreadful
21 June 2018
This film is a really bad ripoff of " The Highlander" . Reincarnation and illegal fencing club. Something like that , it doesn't really matter. It's very , VERY slow moving. Oddly the action scenes are few and they aren't exciting or memorable. The movie does have some weird , bleak , depressing atmosphere. I don't know why. I've struggled to finish the whole movie and now I barely remember anything what happened. That is a sign of a REALLY bad movie.

What else ? There is a sex scene thrown into the movie , some gay subtext and bad acting from Lamas. That's it. Avoid it.

I give it 1/10.

Third-rate action movie
17 June 2018
This is one of those low budget action movies that appear very late at night at cable TV. I like action movies (when they are done well - duh) and I had a bit of insomnia problem , so I decided to watch it.

This is a 90's action movie that is set in the 1980's Lebanon. Don't expect and thoghtful insight on the political turmoil. This is 100% clean action/thriller straight-to- VHS /DVD quality. It was made for the undemanding action junkies and only they will have some kind of fun with this movie.

Will they ? The movie is definitely overlong . There is relatively little action and only at the end it gets to be at least passable. The plot is ridiculously implausible, the dialogues are lame , the acting is lousy beyond belief and the characters could only live in the imagination of the screenwriter (the INCREDIBLY helpful taxi driver is my favourite).

There is a scene here that uses a dribbled basketball as a dramatic sound effect. You read that right. That scene is a poetry of bad movie making. Try to find it on YouTube . It's so bad it's good. This is also the only scene in the whole movie that is memorable. Well , it is an action movie where the main hero is a high school basketball coach who saves his twin brother from terrorists. Propably the lamest hero in action movie history.

This is a movie for masochists or people looking for male eye candy (Michael Pare almost the entire time of the movie is shirtless ! ) . I give it 1/10.

Disappointing , dreadful war drama
31 October 2016
Originally filmed under the title "NAM" before being changed to "Platoon Leader" to cash in on the success of Oliver's Stone "Platoon". A young officer, just out of West Point is sent to Vietnam, where the men don't respect him until he gets wounded and returns to be a wiser soldier and a better commander. Sound's like a good idea for war movie , right ? Sadly this is a dreadful movie Some people who defend this garbage claim that this is a good movie , because it's a realistic description of Vietnam War , compared to the "Apocalypse now " . I wanna tell those people that "AN" is a masterpiece on every level - acting , dialogue , plot . music , direction etc, etc . As a work of art it has every right to take some liberties to send it's message .

"Platoon leader" does have some good scenes in it . However the direction is crappy. Aaron Norris doesn't know how to create tension in action scenes , he uses slow motion in embarrassing way , the drama scenes suck and the pacing doesn't exist here . The acting is also terrible . Dudikoff is likable and charismatic enough action star , but here the role requires someone with far bigger acting talent . Dudikoff tries , hell everyone tries , you can easily see it , I like the ambition , but the most dramatic scenes in the movie are so badly acted that it's just painful to watch . It's not even funny bad , just bad.

The production values are poor , the movie looks terribly cheap . The music is generic "war drama" music , nothing inspired .

The script sucks . The philosophical dialogues are rubbish and the character development is non-existent. Nothing really happens and I 've got a feeling that I was watching an action movie somewhat camouflaged as war drama. I could see potential here and there with some scenes , but it really felt like poor man's "Platoon" . And the very ending scene feels like it belongs to buddy-cop comedy.

Interesting thing - this is the only film directed by Aaron Norris to not have his brother Chuck Norris in it.

I give it 1/10. If you want to see a good and little known war movie better watch "Bat 21" with Gene Hackman and Danny Glover or "Siege of firebase Gloria" with R. Lee Ermey .

The greatest Steven Seagal comedy ever
4 October 2016
This is a very entertaining comedy . Nope , it's not an action movie . It wants to be one , but this feels like Mad TV parody of Steven Seagal movies. Endearing bad movie . Steven , please , make more of this !

The plot is pretty much a "Commando" clone. The plot is pretty standard and relies on nonsense to move it forwards. This movie is comedy gold. From Seagal's reaction to the kidnapping of his daughter ("You don't say") to the love story between him and very beautiful /sexy Monica Lo (unconvincing is not enough to describe it) , to Seagal hating gravity, to the tattoo that appears only underwater , to Seagal power punch, to the bullet-time vs arrow sequence , to the vodoo , to the transsexual villain and many more. Oh boy , what a great comedy ! And it cost 18 mln dollars ?! Now that's a joke !

Action ? What action ? The hilarious "Matrix" rip off fight scenes ? Is there a single person on this planet that would be excited by them ? This is really , REALLY bad and yet better than most of Seagal's direct to DVD stuff. It's entertaining for all the wrong reasons. I give it 1/10 . Great movie for cheap laughs.

Somewhat charming cheesy fantasy movie about toys
31 August 2016
He-Man and the Masters of the Universe toys were quite a big hit in the 80's. There is a rumor that He-Man toys were the results of an unsuccessful attempt to market a line of Conan toys and that they only gave him a blonde wig . Anyway , Mattel (the producer of toys) approached Filmation studio to develop an animated TV series out of the toy line. The cartoon aired from 1983 to 1985. Filmation created most of the supporting characters in the mythology, which Mattel then turned around and developed as toys. As you can see the whole show was basically a cynical extended commercial that was being marketed under the guise of entertainment. To be honest the cartoon is a epic hybrid of fantasy and sci-fi, with ancient castles and sorcerers mixing with laser guns and cyborgs. A good potential for interesting movie. "Masters of the universe" movie was made when the popularity of the cartoon and toys was starting to fade. This was not He-Man's first big-screen release. In 1985, the animated film "The Secret of the sword" was released theatrically.

"MOTU" obviously tries to follow in the footsteps of "Star wars". The real uncredited source for the film is surely Jack Kirby's "Orion of the New Gods" (1971-1977) comic-book from which all the elements have been taken. Director Gary Goddard tried to dedicate the film to American comic book artist Jack Kirby in the closing credits , but the studio took the credit out. The film has also been stripped of much of the mythology of the animated series. Many viewers reviewed the motion picture in comparison to the cartoon, when it really was an adaptation of the toys only.

This is one of bigger budget movies made by Golan - Globus , yet disappointingly because of budget restrains most of the action happens on contemporary Earth . Eternia appears at beginning and ending of the movie , mostly works as a backdrop. Thankfully the costumes and sets are superb . The special effects still hold up pretty well. The music by Bill Conti is good , even if it rip offs "Superman".

The action is OK . I really liked the final battle between He-man and Skeletor , the flying hover craft and the junk yard battle. At least you can clearly see here what's going on , not unlike modern action movies.

The screenplay is rather poor. There is no real introduction to the characters , because the movie is aimed at the cartoon and toy fans . The characters are paper-thin , one dimensional at best. The fish-out-of-water aspect of story doesn't really work , the humor is VERY lame. There are some terribly dumb moments in this movie (the "I'm your mother" scene for example). A little too much time is spent on the soap-opera angle of Julie and Kevin. Dialogues are terribly simplistic. The overall plot is predictable as hell.

There is nice extra scene that was supposed to set the stage for the sequel "Masters of the Universe 2", but since the film didn't do very well at the Box Office, the sequel was dropped. The script for "Masters of the Universe 2" had been written, but was rewritten and became the script for the 1989 Jean-Claude Van Damme sci-fi action film "Cyborg".

Dolph Lundgren ("Rocky 4 ") looks EXACTLY like He-man , althrough his acting is almost non-existent. Lundgren had only limited acting experience, a thick Swedish accent, and was not yet fluent in English during filming. He needed a speech-coach AND a drama-coach to make this movie. The real star however is Frank Langella ("Frost/Nixon"). He took the role of Skeletor because he wanted to do it for his son Alex, whom was a fan of He-Man and Langella had felt Skeletor was a role he couldn't refuse. Frank Langella admitted in an interview that Skeletor was his favorite role. He wrote some of his lines, like: "Tell me about the loneliness of good, He-Man. Is it equal to the loneliness of evil ?". His performance is honestly great , very theatrical and fun. Courtney Cox (TV sitcom "Friends") is bland as Julie . Christina Pickles as the Sorceress is awful . Meg Foster ("They live") as Evil-Lynn is nice. James Tolkan ("Back to the future") tries to bring some humor as police detective , but can't do much with weak dialogue.

Overall , for a toy commercial this is not that bad movie . Just accept the silliness and go with it . Give it a chance on lazy afternoon. It's not really good , but charming and innocent. For a movie about toys this is FAR superior than "Transformers". I give it 3/10.

Shameless copy of "Top gun"
16 February 2016
Tony Scott directs this movie with energy . The movie looks good. The song "Show me heaven" by Maria McKee is great . There romance here works better than in "Top gun" , mostly because Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman become a couple during filming and soon married each other. The acting is fairly decent.

However I've already have seen this movie back in 1986. It was called "Top gun". I think it's offensive if somebody tries to sell you THE SAME STORY all over again only with minor changes. I like "Top gun" because of it's cheesiness and nostalgia. It's a minor classic that it's enjoyable when not taken seriously.

This is not a horrible movie , it has good elements , but I don't really see what was the point of making it other than to grab audience money without putting too much effort. for that I give it 2/10.

A sequel that nobody wanted and nobody remembers
7 November 2015
I think that the first „Major league" movie is seriously overrated . It's a nothing special comedy with cliché story and flat slapstick humor. It's watchable and somewhat funny if you're in the right mood comedy. I'm surprised that it became a hit and classic for some people. So Hollywood made a sequel that was pretty much just as uninspired as the first movie , but this time nobody liked the movie . I guess however that it made some good money. So , here it is – "Major league 3".It doesn't matter you didn't wanted it at all. Let's milk some money from that cow , even if it's long dead.

No star from the first two movies return here – No Charlie Sheen , Tom Berenger , Rene Russo , Omar Epps or Wesley Snipes. Sure we have Cerrano , Tanaka, Roger Dorn and Harry Doyle ,but that's it. The only known person from the cast is Ted McGinley ("Married with children"). The hero here is… I don't remember. He is played by… I don't remember. The story is about… I don't remember. The movie is completely lame and forgettable. Oh yes , that I remember.

Avoid it , even if you liked the first two movies. Avoid it especially if you didn't liked any of the first two movies. I give it 1/10.

Original , but it doesn't mean it's good
7 November 2015
This movie is some sort of weird comedy/criminal/musical movie. I guess that the director wanted to be original just for the sake of being original. Personally , I would rather watch a comedy for the laughs , a thriller for the thrills or musical for the music. "8 femmes" tries to be them all and fails terribly. Or maybe I just don't like this director. I've seen his other movie "The pool" and it was even worse than this one.

The musical parts , the songs are pretty good and nicely singed. The comedy however is non-existent and the mystery is uninvolving.

Acting is decent. The cast involving Catherine Deneuve („Le flic") and Audrey Tatou („Amelia") doesn't show anything spectacular , but nobody gives a bad performance.

Maybe you will like it if you're looking for something original. I don't think I will watch any movie more made by Francois Ozon. I give it 2/10.

Entertaining while it lasts and quickly forgettable afterwards
7 November 2015
This movie was made in the same year as "Police story" which for me (and not only me) is Jackie Chan's best movie . I guess that he was working so hard on the set of that movie that he didn't put much heart in this one. In this movie he is just a supporting player , gone for most of the movie. The main heroes are five guys who are school friends of Chan's character.

Those five guys are pretty likable , so the fact that Jackie is gone is less painful . This movie is more about comedy than action. The action appears in the beginning and in the end of the movie just like Jackie Chan. Most of the movie is slapstick comedy , which is rather funny.

Those five guys are quite adorable. I liked the whole "bad guys are invading the house and tying us with rope" scheme , so they could touch the attractive heroine. The haunted house thing was nice.

I don't really remember much more from the movie. The fights were done well and the story while nothing special was enough to keep me interested. The humor and characters are probably the best things about this movie. Not bad for Sunday afternoon relax. After that it pretty much fades out of memory. I give it 3/10.

Fracture (2007)
5/10
Bad ending pretty much destroys this otherwise good thriller
7 November 2015
Warning: Spoilers
*SPOILERS*SPOILERS*SPOILERS*SPOILERS*SPOILERS*SPOILERS

Anthony Hopkins ("Silence of the lambs") is great as the bad guy and avoids making his character a copy of Hannibal Lecter . Ryan Gosling ("Drive") makes for a nice good guy , even if he obviously had much better performances in his career. Rosamund Pike ("Die another day") is solid as the love interest. The rest of the cast is also doing a good job.

The movie has a nice pacing thanks to Gregory Hoblit ("Primal fear") confident direction. It's also nice to hear fairly interesting dialogues (the dialogue about the eggs is great and explains the title of the movie). The movie also wants to be a morality story about a guy who learns to care about other people . It's done pretty well without being preachy.

Sadly with all of this good stuff in "Fracture" I can't rate it too highly. For most of it's time it's a solid thriller. The cat and mouse game between Hopkins and Gosling is engaging and I don't even mind the slightly forced love story between Gosling and Pike. There are two questions that keep the viewer interested : What happened to the gun and who will win in the end ?

The answer to the first question is logical , surprising and sly. However , the answer to the second question… The movie loses any creditability in the last 20 minutes. The are 2 major events that are completely absurd and unrealistic , yet the need to happen because otherwise the screenwriter wouldn't be able to finish the story with happy end. The suicide of police officer is completely out of character for him ( especially considering his aggressive behavior towards Hopkins early and TWICE in the movie). I am supposed to believe that he would kill himself rather than Hopkins ?! The second event is the fact that Hopkins decided to kill his wife ( who was in coma and didn't had any chance to wake up) , so he was able to get very quickly and without no problem a positive answer from the hospital to do euthanasia. He was able also to get warrant for Gosling to keep away from his wife. What ?! A guy that just has been cleared of murder charges in controversial case is able in less than day to do this all ?! On what charge would Gosling even receive the warrant to keep away from Hopkins wife ? He was guilty of reading her poetry ?!

What is worse those 2 stupid events are NECESSARY for the writer so he could come up with the happy ending involving bullet , murder charge and double jeopardy . Watch the movie and you will understand.

Ending is important part of every movie , but especially thrillers. It can take the movie to a whole new level or destroy it. The ending to "Fracture" sadly belongs to the second category. I give it 5/10.

Hydrozagadka (1971 TV Movie)

Some cheap laughs at the superhero stories
7 November 2015
A cult movie in Poland that might not be not accessible enough for other viewers. This movie makes fun of live in communistic Poland , so it does require some knowledge about those times.

I'm surprised by the quite high rating (7.5 when I'm writing this review) for this movie. It's not that I don't like spoofs or that the movie makes fun of comic books , no . It's just that this movie is simply unfunny.

The opening credits , which are sung by some actress are simply ANNOYING. The story here is obviously a joke and wants to make fun of Superman like comic books . The main hero is pretty much Polish Clark Kent/ Superman . He is called however AS (ACE in English). In this movie he has to solve the mystery involving water and stop the plans of evil maradjah .

I would gladly watch a movie that makes fun of comic books ( which obviously are silly by definition) , but unfortunately the jokes in this movie are completely lame . I fail to see any humor here . The jokes like "Alcohol is the biggest poison ever" or the fact that the bad guy needed a kid's book to finish his master plan are not funny in my opinion. Most of the jokes are language jokes that might be hard to understand for foreign viewers. The funniest thing in this movie movie are the special effects IMHO. The acting is also nice.

This is one boring , unfunny and forgettable movie . I'm from Poland and I don't like it. I guess it's really a cult movie not for everyone. Still , it is a little bit better than "Kick ass" or "Superhero movie". Now those were ANNOYING piece of s**t movies. I'm still waiting for a good comedy about superheroes. I give it 2/10.

Fletch Lives (1989)
5/10
A VERY inferior sequel - watchable , but nothing more
7 November 2015
I have to admit I hated this movie when I first saw it. After second viewing I realize I was too harsh for "Fletch lives". It ISN'T one of the crappiest sequels of all time. It's a rather lazy , uninspired , obligatory sequel to a hit movie , yet far from being truly terrible.

The 1985 "Fletch" movie was a hit and a really good movie in style of "Beverly Hills Cop" . It had Chase at is best as fast-talking quick witted reporter . It was funny movie with a solid , realistic detective story which was a quite faithful adaptation of the first book in the Fletch series by Gregory McDonald. A hit book series produces an original hit movie and there is enough material to use for new movie so the decision to make sequel seems logical , right ? It can't go wrong , right ?

WRONG. There were eight sequels and prequels written by Gregory McDonald that could have been used as the basis for the second "Fletch" movie at the time and yet Universal decided to write a completely new story. WHY ?! If something works ,don't fix it ! Also , why the original writer Andrew Bergman was replaced ? In the end "Fletch" and "Fletch lives" are like apple compared to orange - that different.

The mystery here is lame , rather predictable and silly stuff that could easily appear in Scooby Doo cartoon. Fletch moves to South and meets hillbillies, racists, and religious zealots . The movie is really just a string of stereotypes with a loose plot thrown in. The story is thin and the focus seems to have shifted to Fletch's disguises and gags rather than working on layers of mystery.

The other big problem here is that somehow Fletch is often irritating . He's very arrogant and doesn't seem to really like anyone .It is completely against the character we came to like in the first movie - he had big ego, sure , but he liked and helped other people. He was a charming character , here he is rather egoistic. The gags come way faster and more frequently in the original. The jokes sometimes are rather stupid and crude. Thankfully there are some good one liners here and there and funny situations (fat man healing scene). The music by Harold Faltermeyer is still fun with pretty cool new music theme that appears in the opening credits.

Chevy Chase carries this movie with his usual cynical wit and comedic timing. It's fun to watch him in various disguises . Good character actors like R. Lee Ermey ("Full metal jacket") , Randall "Tex" Cobb ("Raising Arizona") , Cleavon Little ("Blazzing saddles") offer decent support.

I give it 5/10. I can understand that some people really like this movie for being more crazy than original. If you don't get offended by the stereotypes (I wasn't) you might enjoy the obvious cartoonish style of "Fletch lives". I even somehow appreciate the fact that moviemakers tried a different approach here than in the original one. However in the end "Fletch lives" is a very shallow movie with no real intelligence or passion behind it. A "watch it and forget it the next day" type of movie. Shame that the Fletch series ended here, when Chase could easily have made a career starring in his own franchise for few next years. Oh , those stupid, arrogant Hollywood producers .They should have adapted another one of the books.

Oscar (1991)
5/10
Light-hearted watchable gangster comedy
7 November 2015
This film is based on the 1958 French play "Oscar" by Claude Magnier and it's also a remake of French 1967 movie "Oscar" staring Louis De Funes. I haven't seen the French version and considering my dislike for French comedies (with few exceptions) I don't think I ever will. So there won't be any comparisons between the French movie and Hollywood version. The only thing you need to know is the action here is set in 30's America in world of Italian gangsters instead of 60's France and the world of French businessmen.

The story here is completely ridiculous , but it's a FARCE people , it has to be that way . The story has to be slightly confusing and full of action and twists. Maybe that's the reason why the USA audience didn't liked it ? It's kind of weird considering it's a homage to 30's comedies that are still popular today. It feels a lot like a Cary Grant / Katherine Hepburn movie.

Some jokes feel repetitive and the story gets predictable in some place , but it never hurts the movie too much The story is pretty much an excuse to put the characters in funny situations. The characters are well defined and likable. The movie is loaded with memorable dialogue and wordplay . "Oscar" feels like a mix of screwball comedy and «commedia dell'arte».

Sylvester Stallone always had a great sense of humor even in his most serious movies (contrary to what people say). Here he is having fun spoofing his own image and shows a really good comic timing . He does an admirable job and actually fits his role. "Oscar" has also an all star supporting cast: Don Ameche ("Trading places") , Marisa Tomei ("My cousin Vinny") , Tim Curry ("Rocky horror picture show"), Kirk Douglas ("Spartacus") , Kurtwood Smith ("Robocop") Chazz Palmenteri ("Bronx tale") . Watch out for Arleen Sorkin (the voice of Harley Quinn in "Batman TAS") in small role of manicurist. Everyone is good here and fits is/hers role perfectly.

John Landis directs "Oscar" in solid way. "Oscar" actually feels like you're watching a stage show and that's not a bad thing.

Forget "Rhinestone" and "Stop or my mom will shoot". This is Stallone's best comedy (not counting his action comedies) and John Landis best movie in the 90's ( before he lost his touch completely). "Oscar" is not earth-shatteringly important movie or comedy , but it's pretty fun movie in universal way (you can watch it with all of your family and everyone should find something funny in it). I give it 5/10.
