Carnage (2011)
8/10
Interesting

I watched this flick without knowing the play and I was very pleasantly surprised. In the first act the audience is numbed to sleep by the up-tight act of the parents uncomfortable talking about a feud between there sons. The emotions of the situation are extremely well done. Your really feel what the characters really think and how they try to avoid conflict.

(minor spoilers about the way the movie develops, but won't ruin the flick) In the second act the situation escalates and the characters fall in an honest argument. The characters show there true colors and really did surprise me in there intensity.

I love 'one room' dialogues movies and this is another excellent contribution to the curriculum. I advise everyone that is willingly to put some effort in watching a movie to watch 'carnage'.

Raw excellence.

Inglourious Basterds is nothing short of a masterpiece. The unique Tarantino style: taking a walk with history, historical characters and events and melting it down into a over-the-top cinematic masterpiece.

That what makes Inglourious Basterds great is first this unique style. Tarantino ignores the rules of cinema and creates unique and unorthodox characters and plot. The score is very bizarre, but spot on. In one scene the music can change from modern hardrock into a very old school 30's thriller movie score. And yes, they pull it off.

Also the acting is excellent. Christopher Walz in his role as Hans Landa will haunt you for a long time leading the long list of terrific actors in the flick. People that were negative about the Nazi characters saying they were 'sympathising with them' really didn't get the point. In the very first scene the character of Walz is established as a highly cunning, brutal and despicable character. Comparing jews to rats in a skin-crawling way. Also the way the 'jew-hunter' practices his job is simply horrifying, because he always wears a smile on his face while mentally torturing other characters. This mind-messing way of putting a character out there is not only original but also extremely brilliant.

This movie has (just as many other Tarantino films) the feeling of a comic book, patched with unorthodox scenes and angles, mixed with a bizarre, brutal alternative to reality. Long dialogue in the many thrilling scenes will leave you on the edge of your seat. People that hate this kind of movies don't see the art in this 'devil may care' way of making movies.

This is not a history movie. This is another unique view on making movies by Tarantino. Hate it or love it. This is excellence. There are many who love it, because I remember watching this in the theater and every scene people were cheering. Give this film a try, you might just love it.

Sherlock (2010–2017)
9/10
Thrilling. Masterful. Amazing.
1 August 2012
BBC's Sherlock is the best thing to hit television in years. Where the latest film releases of the Sherlock franchise were Jack Sparrow vs. Batman and a lot of explosives put together in a likable visual package the 2010 BBC series Sherlock is an engaging, unique yet traditional, detective drama.

Likable characters, interesting cases, intelligent plot, high production value and relatability make this series something we will enjoy for many years to come. Both Sherlock and Dr. Watson are played to perfection. Martin Freeman (Watson) is both likable and relatable and an excellent counter-character against the raging intelligence train that is Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock. Never before has Sherlock Holmes been portrayed in such a thrilling, interesting and engaging way.

My hopes for this series are high and it deserves a great deal of attention.

Mixed feelings but very satisfying.

The first part of Batman: Under the Red hood left me unhappy with the film. But after the quite shallow openingsequence packed with explosions and crowbar beatings the film starts to flourish. After you get used to the interpretation of the Joker you will really start to enjoy the film. More than excellent sequences will leave you amazed and sucked into the world of Batman. I was irritated by the voicing of Nightwing by Neil Patrick Harris (who I normally enjoy). It was too 'kiddy' and 'punchliney' for my taste. Also I felt that the character can be left out without harming the story. What also bothered me with the central part of the plot was that the twist was put in so early in the movie, which kinda leaves you waiting for a climax.

The lesser stuff aside, the emotional conclusion of the film is simply amazing and makes up for the flaws of the film.

Under the Red hood is certainly a diamond, but in the rough. It's imperfect but it is extremely enjoyable and will leave you wanting to see it again.

Insult
29 July 2012
This movie is a terrible terrible piece of garbage. It felt like an insult to my intelligence, the Greek mythology and the story of Perseus. I really don't understand how a piece of sh*t like this can be produced with the massive budgets action movies like this have. It only takes one smart kid to straight out a screenplay? The makers of this movie don't understand the mythological world and the story of Perseus. I feel robbed and insulted after watching this.

The epic Greek mythologies are raped by clash of the titans by both terrible screenplay and performances. Let's forget this piece of junk as soon as possible.

The Big Year (2011)
7/10
Surprising
25 July 2012
The Big Year came as a pleasant surprise for me. The flick isn't a conventional comedy. In fact I didn't even laugh out loud once. The movie is a drama packed two hour journey from reality.

Jack Black normally portrays a big lovable child-adult which can become quite annoying after a few of his flicks. In The Big Year however his character develops, has excellent sequences, motives and overall drama. I think this flick is the best Jack Black since King Kong and The Pick of Destiny.

Owen Wilson in his movies mostly a devil may care emo-boy, but in this flick he shows us he actually can act and portrays struggling, developing characters.

Overall the movie isn't groundbreaking and misses 'sparkless' but is definitely worth your while. Also the theme's and setting is amazingly original. 6,8/10

Batman: Year One (2011 Video)

Batman: Year One
24 July 2012
Batman: Year One is an excellent interpretation of the cult graphic novel. It feels the same as the comic and you will be interested again in the first year as Batman of the world's greatest detective. Commissioner James Gordon's issues in his first year on the job in Gotham will really grab you by the throat. Bruce Wayne, returning to Gotham after a long exile, is troubled by feelings of responsibility, guilt and grief before he chooses to become Batman. This transformation takes place very organically and Bruce Wayne's trauma's aren't forced- or cheesy-feeling. The movie will also give you a first glimpse of Selina Kyle's transformation into catwoman. The Raw nature of her passages are done really good and you even get a sense of her origin story. (I recommend the graphic novel Catwoman - Her Sister's keeper to those interested in the complete origin story of Catwoman).

I can recommend the flick to everyone that ever read a Batman book or watched a Batman movie - and even if you haven't, this is the perfect place to start.
