The Danish Girl (2015)
A flick for voyeurs
The book that this flick is based on was a dud. So is this movie. It is a meaningless story that should never have been told. But Hollywood is obsessed with sex and violence so while this story is not violent it is about sex, particularly Hollywood's fascination with abnormal sex. The story is about what appears to be a normal couple who are happily married but then the husband begins to fantasize about what it would be like if he was a female and the movie degrades into a fantasy about sex which appeals to voyeurs who most certainly will love this flick and praise it to high heaven. Only good thing, if it could be called a good thing, is that the actor do a good job of acting out this fantasy. So unless one is a voyeur, skip this flick.
By the Sea (2015)
They don't make movies worst than this
My friends and I were so disgusted by this flick that we got up and left before it was finished. what a waste watching two mediocre actors (and to call them mediocre is a compliment) in a tawdry so-called love story. Supposedly this flick is a real life emulation of the actors' real life but whatever it is, it is sick. In particular because Jolie is the director, it shows her as just a slutty low class person and she doesn't hide it. That means she has a very low concept of the world. Yeah, the scenery is nice but that is about all that can be said for the flick. Pitt and Jolie may think they have an Oscar candidate which it is not but it sure is a top candidate for the Razzies.
Cesar Chavez (2014)
A somewhat distorted view of Chavez
The movie in its way distorts the Cesar's Chavez and his impacts. No doubt Chavez was a charismatic figure and because of that Big Labor used him to create the UFW. Chavez was Labor's puppet. He did what they wanted him to do. He was non-violent because Labor did not want violence. To Big Labor violence was something that belonged to the commies and Labor didn't want violence to characterize their efforts to create another cash cow in a farm workers union. So Labor manipulated Chavez and because he saw the benefits of being Labor's stooge, he went along with it. Not that he didn't also believe that it would benefit his beloved farm workers too. Without the backing of big labor, Chavez would have gone nowhere. He was poorly educated, almost an illiterate itinerant. But to his credit he listened to Big Labor and he succeeded. It was Big Labor that had the power in Sacramento and with the government, not Chavez. However, Chavez's claims of success are somewhat dimmed by the fact that while it successfully with the help of Big Labor did get some reforms enacted into law, members of the UFW get socked for dues that support well paid union executives that have in the end delivered little for the workers. And many farm workers still don't belong to the UFW which they do not see any reason to belong to.
Unfortunately, the movie is very selective in what it portrays of Chavez so as not to diminish his image. Hopefully someday someone will write the true story of Chavez and bring it to the screen so the public can form its own judgment concerning his importance to Latinos.
Zero Dark Thirty (2012)
More fiction than fact
Went to the movie expecting to get the real scoop on the assassination of Bin Laden. Turned out it was really historical fiction based on a real event. It amazes me because the way it really happened was exciting enough that there was no need to embellish the story. The real kicker to me however, was inserting the torture scenes into the picture. It not only was not true, but it added nothing to the picture. Worse, when this film is shown in the Arab world, there will a lot of backlash against America and perhaps cost American lives. It is unbelievable that the writers and producers were not insensitive to this but one of the problems with Hollywood today is that anything goes regardless of the potential consequences. Being a combat veteran I was not impressed by the directing of this movie. I thought it was too faked up at times. They say that this movie wasn't meant to be a documentary and it certainly isn't. Too bad. And too bad it didn't lay off the torture scenes. We don't need that and neither did the movie.
This Is 40 (2012)
Another slutty, smutty flick
We went to see Hobbit but couldn't get in so we went to this movie. I wish we had not wasted our money. But then when it was clear that the movie was not going anywhere we got up and left. The movie is nothing but raunchy trash. Any one who enjoyed this movie is sick themselves. It just shows both how far the film industry and the public love the sewer. Anyone who was involved in the making of this disgusting piece of crap not only should be ashamed but terribly embarrassed. It is too bad that actors and actresses prostituted themselves to make this film. But then as long as the public goes to see movies like this, the more stinkers Hollywood will make. Too bad.
The Iron Lady (2011)
A real stinker
Deeply disappointing movie. I expected a biography of Margaret Thatcher but instead got a story about a dottering and delusional old woman who once was Prime Minister of England. Very little biographical information included in the movie and some of it fiction. Thatcher and movie goers deserved much better. The movie barely touches on her biography which was extensive. No mention of her career first as a research chemist and later as an English Barrister. The movie barely touches on her early and distinguished political career, instead wasting most of the movie on her old age. it would have been better served to accurately depict her remarkable career.
I never was a great admirer of Thatcher but we have to giver her due. While her methods of achieving her goals were heavy handed, nevertheless she did accomplish much for England and in particular rectified much of the damage done by the Labour governments to her country. It is too bad that the makers of this movie chose to disparage her rather than give her her rightful due.
