beautifully perfect
7 November 2008
Warning: Spoilers
It's now been nearly five years since Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind was released. I have commented on quite a few films, and why I never commented on this before is beyond me. The story sees a normal guy who has broken up with his girlfriend. He then finds out she has had some modern medical procedure to remove their relationship and him from her memory. He then decides to kind of get his own back and get it done too. then halfway through his procedure, whilst under a deep sleep, he realises that he still loves her and wants to keep hold of every memory he has of her. its sounds strange, and what do u expect it comes from the mind of Charlie Kauffman. I cannot stress enough how beautiful this movie is. Michel Gondry deserved an Oscar nod for his direction, its out there but suits the tone brilliantly. Jim carrey does an amazing job as Joel, showing he is not the one trick pony many thought. Yes he is great at physical comedy, and has made us laugh out load for the last fourteen years, but he is also a very very brilliant actor, capable of showing true emotion through heartbreaking scenes. Kate Winslet is already known through the film world as being a hugely talented actress. Here is no different, she plays a deep eccentric character, who has an edge. She is terrific. All the supporting players are very good too. Elija Wood, Mark Rufflo, Tom Wilkinson and Kirsten Dunst all succeed in their roles, showing that even in background roles they still shine. What I believe to be an important part of this movie is the soundtrack. The haunting piano music for different scenes is fantastic. There are not a lot of films people can call perfect for its genre, the shawshank redemption, the godfather and American beauty maybe. I claim this to be a perfect film. Its upsetting yet uplifting, a very rare breed indeed. Everyone has to see this once, and when you've done that, watch it again. This in my eyes is the greatest film ever made. I'm gonna go now, as I wanna put the DVD on and fall in love all over again

Even though this is the first film by the broken lizard group, it's the last one I saw. Having mildly enjoyed Super Troopers, and managed to sit through the crap that is club dred and beerfest, I was surprised to hear they did an earlier film. Now i didn't sit down with high hopes, but was hoping for a funny campus romp. My friend asked me to keep in mind they are younger (obviously) and its their first foray into film. I did and was still disappointed. Not taking away the acting and comedy skills of the BL guys, they were OK. The whole film was tiresome, clichéd and frankly boring. Some of the other actors in the film were really poor at acting. And the Rugby game didn't even resemble rugby. Poor showing. They improved drastically with Super Troopers and have declined since. Lets hope they get back on form with Super Troopers 2

actually liked it
15 October 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I was looking forward to seeing this film, then due to bad reviews didn't bother until today. I was surprised. I thought it was actually are very good blockbuster. Will Smith plays a down and out superhero. He lives in a trailer, has a drink and attitude problem but is near invincible. He, after wrecking much of the city whilst stopping crime, gets much bad press and is wanted by the police. After saving Jason Batemans character, he is advised to clean up his act and people will love him. Will plays the title role brilliantly, and the effects were amazing. I wasn't totally hooked on the twist involving Charlize Therons character at first but warmed to it by the closing credits. I advise everyone, to take no notice of the the bad or good reviews and go see it with an open mind, then decide yourselves. Some will love it and some will hate, I fall into the first bracket.

Mirrors (I) (2008)

an OK reflection
14 October 2008
Warning: Spoilers
another remake of a Japanese horror, so you just know there will be some genuine creepy and scary moments in the film. Keither Sutherland plays a police detective who has had his badge took off him for a shooting incident and takes up a job at an abandoned store that had been in a terrible fire five years previously. The store inside has many mirrors, and one night whilst walking around the premises, Keither sees something in the mirrors. Is he loosing his mind due to the strong prescription drugs or is something more sinister afoot....of course there's something sinister, i told you it was a remake of a Japanese horror. Somekind of demon is trapped in the mirrors and can travel to an mirror it wants in the world apparently and can some how kill you using your own reflection. Yes it is completely daft but there are some edge of your seat moments. Keither does play Jack Baur in a supernatural version of 24 though. I enjoyed it but its no citizen kane, but then again I never expected it to be anything more than what it is.

when a stranger doesn't scare
9 September 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Yes we have seen the premise many times before.. a teenage babysitter is stalked. It all starts with simple phonecalls, then during one of these calls the stranger leaves hints that he's near by. To be honest the first part was quite chilling. the viewer is quite scared for the heroine. the is stupid parts where she goes out of the house to check to guest house and if it was me I would have called the cops way before and demanded they come straight away, never mind waiting till they track a call. It was enjoyable none the less. Then the killer is revealed hiding in the roofs rafters. He is not the least bit scary and even in the end gets beaten up by the babysitter. It gets pathetic fast. camilla belle plays an OK role though with not a lot to work with, gorgeous as well.

overall the film is very clichéd but OK

Just friends
12 January 2007
Warning: Spoilers
The tagline states that just friends is the last thing a man wants to hear, and funnily enough it is, having been through the situation myself, I can relate. But where Ryan Reynolds character took him ten years to change that it took me 2 months ha ha. The film is a great silly comedy, about a fat Ryan Reynolds falling in love with his best friend and school popular girl Amy Smart, she rejects him and he runs away to LA, loses weight, gets confident, and becomes a womaniser of famous ladies. Whilst on a trip to Paris with the new big music female artist, Anna Farris, who is stunning as usual, his plane is landed and he is forced to spend a few night in the town he ran away from a decade earlier. There he bumps into Amy again and realises that his feelings haven't changed. Therefore a battle for her affection is started with the other ugly duckling turned swan, chris klein. It is a funny feel good film that everyone can enjoy

Miami Vice

Warning: Spoilers
I was surprised at how good this film was. I really like the look of the film, Michael Mann directed this movie like a trendy music video, and he pulls it off. Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx are great as Sonny And Rico, they make a great partnership. The action pieces are great, especially the final standoff between the Miami police and the drug dealers, you actually feel your in it, what with the shaky camera angles and sound effects. What stood out for me most though, regarding this slick popcorn muncher, was the brilliant soundtrack. From the start with Jay Z and Linkin Park, through to Moby's dance songs. It captures the spirit of the movie perfectly. Of course some of the film is over the top but in the end its a stylish no brainer that anyone can enjoy.

Not good service...
12 January 2007
Warning: Spoilers
To be honest, I had never even heard of this film before my friend recommended it. So I looked it up and watched. I actually think Ryan Reynolds is a great funny actor with a bright future. The movie is based around a day in a restaurant/bar. A new guy is starting, and its Reynolds job to show him the ropes, from how to serve customers to playing the game of showing other workers your cock and balls. There are some funny moments in the film and great lines, there are some other disgusting moments as well, like what they do to the not so nice female customers steak. The movie obviously isn't an award winner, but its enjoyable enough to watch at least once. Also don't turn off until the credits have finished, as the rap song by the two young pot washers is brilliant. PS Anna Faris is stunning

The Prequel

Warning: Spoilers
Finally Managed to watch this thriller from the mind of Thomas Harris this week. I am a great fan of the original, Manhunter, so was in two minds about watching this. I was actually happy with this film, its both quite close to the Michael Mann picture, but with enough differences to keep you watching. The Movie stars some of the worlds very best actors. Ed Norton is his usual brilliant self as the young and brilliant detective Will Graham. Hopkins is great as the menacing Hannibal, and Fiennes is great as the puddled tooth fairy. Brett Ratner has remade the film well, and even though the the film isn't as dark as the 80's original it still stands well. Having said all this I still prefer Manhunter as It was quite a scary thriller when I was young, but this movie is highly recommended, for those who have or haven't seen Manhunter.

King Kong (2005)

the ape of things to come
14 August 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Peter Jackson had returned to film after his epic lord of the rings trilogy, and a remake of the great monster mash, King Kong, had me watering in the mouth. Although nearly three hours long, the time went by pretty fast, this is due to the action set pieces that start once the crew reach skull island. The first 45 minutes is a bit hum drum and basically just gets the ball rolling, building up to the bigger monkey scenes. Jack black was an excellent choice as the scheming, dodgy film director, who puts all those in his life in danger by travelling to skull island. It doesn't tell you by the way how he comes upon this ancient map, we just have to take his word for it. For the most part, the Gorilla is very life like, due to brilliant computer graphics and amazing movements from Andy serkis, him of Gollum fame. A lot of the scenes though are easily seen through, and you can tell its been done on a blue screen, and you can easily tell that Kong isn't carrying Anne around. Not taking anything away from the film, but the scenes in Jurassic park, 13 years earlier, look more realistic. The film was very enjoyable though. A tale of being an alpha male, and falling in love is basically the main premise. Don't be afraid to cry at the end as well, nothing wrong with showing a little emotion. Watch, relax, enjoy this blockbuster.

Silent Hill (2006)

silent hill lacking thrill?
24 April 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This was the only video game adaption i was actually looking forward to watching on the big screen. Of all that came before it wherem to be honest, poor, albeit Super Mario bros, street fighter, and the god awful House of the dead. I have been a fan of the games since the first came out on play station, and absolutely loved the eerie atmosphere and cheap scares it delivered by the boat load. So as soon as i heard that this was to be the premise for a big budget movie i was both enthralled and worried, worried that they would make a mess of such a good basic idea. The idea of a parent and young daughter in a car, when suddenly they have a crash, parent wakes up to find the daughter missing so she looks for her around a deserted town, with scares a plenty. The movie writers decided to go too much in the same direction of the game, with the darkness taking over the world, little blobs moving and huge people with metal pyramids covering the heads whilst wielding huge, and i mean huge swords. This comes across a bit daft in films and reminded me a little of the hell-raiser films at one point. When you think about it, it doesn't make much sense at all, and going into the whole, good/bad soul of a young girl and making them alive just isn't comprehend able. Some of the dialogue and acting is horrible as well, just wait until Radha Mitchell finds her daughters pictures of burning buildings and witches in the backseat of her car and her daughter going "it wasn't me, i don't like it mummy, i don't like it" it went through me, horrible horrible acting. The ending is strange as well, and i believe i heard at least 10 people ask "what the hell was going on". The movie did have some good scenes though, for example the group of nurses who are drawn to the light is brilliantly set. The town of Silent Hill is spot on as well, it does look the part, and the buildings themselves have their own and great personality. The movie is quite entertaining but too me it was incredibly disappointing, if David Fincher made this i believe it would have been amazing. This movie will be a hit and adored with all male virgins though, so if it gets a high rating, the virgins have seen it and voted

Born from the depths of Tim Burton amazing imagination, The Nightmare before Christmas puts a twist into the old holiday tale.Made in 1993, this film still stands out and wouldn't look dated if released today.Made using state of the art stop motion animation and with Danny Elfmans brilliant score and sing along songs, this is a film for all ages.Jack Skelington is the pumpkin king who lives in a place called halloween town. A dark place full of weird and wonderful characters who spend the entire year planning the next halloween party, with Jack looking over the proceedings. Then after one quite frightful halloween, Jack realises that something is missing in his life, and whilst walking through the woods he comes across a door that leads him to the world of Christmas town, a place bright and happy. Jack finds the place awe inspiring and when he returns to his home of Halloween, decides to bring festive cheer with him. The characters are brilliant, as is the music and gags. Children will love it, adults will love it, quite possibly a classic animated film for the ages

Aliens (1986)
10/10
and it was war.............
21 December 2005
Warning: Spoilers
A sequel to a classic sci fi/horror doesn't usually bode well. The director and screen writer usually just use the same formula, if its not broke don't fix it. James Cameron thankfully took a different approach. The first film relied on suspense with one alien on board the ship terrorising the shipmates. This time we have a planet full of aliens, face huggers, a huge queen alien and a group of hardened marines with a never say die attitude. Like Cameron said "its Vietnam in space", and he's not wrong. The film is all about action and scaring set pieces. I first managed to watch Aliens in 1988 when i was 8 years old, and ever since that moment it remains one of my favourite movies of all time. Set many years after the first, Ripley has been in hyper sleep floating in space since, The workers of a planet have not been in contact recently, so those in charge have decided that there may be some truth to Ripleys alien story, and send in a team of marines and Ripley. The movie contains many classic scenes ie 'they're in the room' and when Ripley goes back for Newt. Even the picture of Ripley with Newt holding on to her whilst she has a flame thrower in her hands is a part of modern pop culture. I feel sad though as imagine how lucky everyone was within three years either way of Aliens, we had The terminator, Predator, Die Hard, Bloodsport, all these classic action films, now we get nothing that even half compares to these wonderful popcorn munchers

a dark, evil film
20 December 2005
When I first heard about this film, obviously The Exorcist and rip off were words that came into my head, and I wasn't really all that fussed on seeing it. Then the trailer came and I started to see the potential. Now I have seen the movie, and I have to say that I'm impressed with the whole production. I see it as The Exorcist meets A few good men. Tom Wilkinson is excellent as the Man of the cloth accused of negligence during the exorcisim. Its clear to see that Tom has come along way since his role in The full monty, and with this character and his portrayal of the Dr in Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind, Tom is reaping the more meatier roles of his stripper friends. All though not a full blown horror film, the scary parts are shown in flashbacks, this is quite spooky. I'd go as far as to say that Emily Rose when possessed freaks me out more than young Blair, especially when contracting in weird positions on the floor. The movie moves along at a reasonable pace and is easily understandable. I can't help but think though that if this movie came out, say, thirty years earlier, it would have gone down as an absolute classic horror, but i believe it will be, i'm sorry to say, just a movie of the week.

the forth and best
24 November 2005
Being a bit of a potter fan i was kind of waiting for this with baited breath. One reason for this being the tri wizard cup, wanting to see it transfered from page to screen is a must see. Another reason being that the third, the prisoner of azkerban was my favourite book in the series but a bit of a disappointment as a film. This film does not. It excites everyone, from child to adult. If I had any negative comments it would be that the film does miss a lot out of the book but what do you expect seeing the book has about 700 pages. Also rupert grint is still up to his over the top face poses, but hey never mind. Mike newell does an excellent job at directing this, dark chapter in the series. And when i mean dark, i mean dark, this is far to scary a film for youngsters and even has a certain sexual chemistry building between its characters as their obviously going through puberty. The effects are brilliant and the acting is great, but even though Gambon is flawless in is version of dumbledore, I can't help but miss Richard Harris. This is the best of the film series so far and I feel that it will be better than the next as nothing much happens in the order of the phoenix until the last chapter. Bring on the rest though, as potter is most likely the greatest magical adventure series of our lifetime

battle rubbish
25 August 2005
Warning: Spoilers
The first was was quite enjoyable, original, and fun. This is terrible and doesn't even make much sense. In fact, I'm getting angry just thinking about it. For one, those who survived have declared war on all grown ups. This includes the no-neck Nanehara, his bird and some non- scary looking kids in rags with ak-47s.

It's not well thought out. They said if a couple are separated for more than 50 metres their collars would blow up; at one point, two were separated, the girls neck blew up but the boy managed a 5 minute speech, which was supposed to be heart rendering but wasn't, before his blew up. Also if the wild 7 where on an island, why did they not know it was the kids of battle royale on the island shooting, even though there where speakers announcing who had died earlier that day? And why had they declared war on all adults when they're about 6 months from being adults themselves? Are they going to shoot each other?

Messy and horrible slop of a film. Waste of money making, buying, renting....everything.

Why they think anyone would be scared of that kid who pushes past everyone god only knows? He's got a hair doo like Tina turner for christs sake.

Battle Royale (2000)

Asian excellence??
12 August 2005
Warning: Spoilers
For starters Battle royale is different, and original. I have never seen a film which pits teenagers against each other to the death, with extreme brutality. I personally like the idea and the premise. The island in which the film is based is also a good location and looks menacing in its own right. the things that let the film down though stop it from being a personal favourite and classic are for one, the script itself, conversation wise, is poor. Everybody is in love with each other, and people kill themselves before even attempting to survive. If it was my old class from school ages ago we all would of tried to kill one another no doubt about it. Another thing, the acting, it is awful, and you don't care who dies and who doesn't, you know for sure 5 mins into the film that nanahara will survive. The girl out of kill bill is gorgeous, as is the girl from the video. I did enjoy the movie though, but can't help but think that if the Americans remade this with the cream of young talent and a director of David Finchers calibre it would not only be an improvement but maybe push the premise into that cult status.

good script hunting
11 August 2005
Even though the film has been out a good few years, I only got round to watching this last night after many friends had bigged it up. To be honest I did enjoy the film, I thought the script was really good from damon and affleck and Williams performance was top notch and worthy of his Oscar. It was quite heart rendering. The fight scene on the baseball court was not very realistic, and even though Matt played the character of will being a disturbed and lonely young man very well, I didn't feel like he would be the person who could possibly scare anyone. I love the scene on the park bench and the conversation between Will and Shaun, and Shaun stating that just because he has read Oliver Twist it doesn't mean he understands what will has been through, excellent. Overall I really enjoyed the movie and was impressed.

Texas redone
10 August 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Having seen and actually own the original I wasn't totally looking forward to watching this, mainly because i thought the original was over hyped and i felt quite let down. This however due to a bigger budget and cast was different. this film is a machine that never stops to put you on the edge of your seat and doesn't stop coming after you like a terminator for an hour and a half. Gone are the horror comedies like scream, which i love, but now just the scare. I wouldn't say the film was jumpy either, more nerve jangling, especially when you see mike vogels nails come from his fingers when trying to not get pulled down the stairs and scratching the wall. They also changed the story a bit but not to much that it was nothing like the original, Once again Leatherface is the character in which the film is centred and is a cult horror character, Biel is gorgeous as well. I enjoyed this loud, gut churning ,steam roller of a movie, and its perfect for dates

Great fun
8 August 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Even though i heard slight rumours from some people that this movie is quite poor, I watched it with an open mind so I could make my own decision... and i totally enjoyed it.

This film is a big budget blockbuster that hits all the right marks, it leaves you in awe with its special effects and leaves you quite disturbed in parts if you manage to put yourself in the characters shoes. Cruise played is roll of not so good father who turns good really well, as does Fanning as his little girl, even though when she goes hysterical you wanna clip her round the ear.

The film does have some loose end though, like if they buried all there hard ware tri-pods a million years ago why didn't they invade the planet then when there where no humans. And if they have been studying the planet for over a million years why didn't they know about our micro germs. And why hadn't there technology developed in a MILLION years. Thats like England going to war with another country our soldiers kitted out in loin cloths chucking rocks and spears whilst riding penny farthings.

Enough of the moaning though it was a great film and i especially love the noise of the Tri-pods once there up and in battle

fun but dumb
4 August 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Mr and Mrs Smith is an enjoyable no brainer. I like Angelina and Pitt, and they do make an excellent, if some what ridiculously beautiful couple. The story as you will all know by now centres around a married couple who are both hit men/spy type people but neither know the other does it, and live in secrecy regarding there day jobs. Then they find out and try to kill each other. The fight scenes are amusing and have a 'War of the Roses' vibe to them, but spinning plates are replaced with Uzi's and ak47's. Most of the film is totally over the top and pretty much unconvincing but it is good at getting its job done, which is providing a vechile for both stars to headline a major movie, and to provide an hour and 45 minutes for the viewer to get away from their everyday life and be in this fantasy world where if you had Angelina's hand bag you too could jump off a skyscraper without any safety devices and land completely safe with no one seeing you even though there is thousands of people around you... which is daft

not good at all
3 August 2005
watched this with hope in my heart that this was going to be a film that made us Brits proud. One that doesn't make us out to be the royal and posh toffs that most films do. one of the tag lines says its a real gangster movie, ha ha if these gangsters lived round ours they'd last about an hour. They're about as menacing as pigeons. Its not very realistic, even though it thinks it is, and the black guy who plays Monty, a character who is supposed to be brutal and scary looks like an extra from the Cosby show, my Nan wouldn't be scared of him, even if he broke into her house armed with a Uzi. The only person i enjoyed seeing in this was the fella from brookside who owned the chip shop. Even sienna miller couldn't help this, if i made this it would be dark, no humour and disturbing.I'm not going to give away the ending but they built it up using a birds eye view and load music, to try and get an emotion out of you, so you walk out of the cinema or where ever it was playing going, "oh my god,I can't believe that". I went "oh my god, I couldn't give a sh*t"

20 June 2005
what the....

game spin offs have never been the be all and end all of movies but this could have been fun.a haunted house movie with zombies and huge bosses.no Shakespeare but mindless fun non the less.

they had no idea what they were doing whilst making this. it looks like it was made by a 12 year old who loves games, monsters and tits. and uses these three ingredients in every scene.

in between these scenes they even add a grainy screen shot of the game.

the acting is horrible, clint howard gets the award for terrible over acting of the year, get back on gentle ben sunny jim

anyone who gets a job after this travesty deserves a medal.

in one word this film is turd.

sad ...really
8 May 2005
this has got to be one of those films where the trailer is 50 times better than the movie itself.I first saw the trailer in 1991, it looked great.Since then i have always wanted to see it but could never find it.....until today, yes, 14 years later.

lets just say I was so disappointed its unreal, OK i knew it wouldn't be an Oscar winner but still had hopes that it would be a fun no-brain film in the bloodsport mold. Unfortunately it was not, it's Pooh

whats with all the American rock and roll music and the acting was so bad it was quite frightening.

The fight scenes were rubbish and look fake.

this DVD only cost me £5 and I believe I was overcharged by £7

Now I'm sad as I know that I will never get that hour and a half back.
