Redacted (2007)
Courageous ..
Redacted is different from other Iraq War films. Firstly, it doesn't portray the US soldiers as the heroes they aren't. I mean, some are heroes of course, but not all. Other films seem to have a way of twisting war crimes and crimes against humanity into pro-war propaganda, but this film makes no attempt at that. Although crudely edited in some parts, as though on MovieMaker or the like, and although some of the acting is slightly amateurish, I do have to give this film a 6. The main reason is due to the courageous nature as aforementioned. The film portrays events as they were, i.e. it was a war, nothing more, nothing less, and certainly not glamorous. It was nice to see a different perspective when it comes to modern war films. To conclude, without intending to contradict myself, I do feel some of the US soldiers could have been portrayed in a better light as, like all groups, it only takes a small minority to get the others a bad name. Worth a watch for something different.
Dirty Harry (1971)
Thrilling!
This film contains outstanding performances from Eastwood and the rest of the cast alike. The storyline is good enough to keep you on the edge of your seat in suspense. At times, it can feel slightly clichéd and a bit predictable as you know he will eventually catch Scorpio. In spite of this, the film and action scenes running throughout will keep your eyes fixed to the screen as although you have a fair idea of what the end result will be, you remain uncertain as to how this will actually happen.
When Scorpio gets released without charge and goes on the run again, it can be slightly frustrating and appear to be exactly what you would expect and the whole pursuit resumes again as before. Regardless, the film is still worth a watch and the random jokes scattered throughout make it very entertaining!
Boardwalk Empire (2010)
Outstanding in all respects!
This series thoroughly deserves a rating of 9 stars! The extent of Steve Buscemi's talent is clearly visible to anyone watching this amazing TV series. He performs expertly in the lead role, supported by a huge cast of other characters.
In my view, it would be unfair in some respects to call Nucky the 'main' character because there are so many other characters that get developed and that we get to know so well along with Nucky. This series is a new style for me being as it is based on gangsters during Prohibition Era in the USA. In spite of this, I thoroughly enjoy every moment of every episode and the mix of class, guns, violence, drama, romance, crime and thrills are all wonderfully balanced so there isn't too much of one thing and a lack of another.
The one fault this series has is that at times, it does contain a lot of unnecessary nudity and sexual scenes at times so viewers of a more sensitive nature may be deterred from watching it for this reason. Aside from that, this show has everything you need to keep your eyes glued to the screen!
Broken City (2013)
Cast make film watchable
Honestly, I have never seen a film starring Mark Wahlberg where I could say he was bad. As always, he performs excellently, as do all the rest of the cast. However, the storyline of the film isn't great and it can be hard to comprehend at times throughout. The reason for this is because it can be a bit jumpy going from one thing to another and not really making an awful lot of sense to the audience as well. There were no moments in the film that had me on the edge of my seat or shouting at the TV, which instantly tell me it was in no way thrilling or exciting. The only reason this film is watchable is because of the fine performances of the cast members and that is why it deserves a six, due to their hard work!
Der Untergang (2004)
Must-See WWII Film!
Bruno Ganz performs spectacularly as Adolf Hitler in this film. Although in German, this film reels us in from the very beginning. When watching, you feel as though you are there actually partaking in the final days of Hitler's life and the final days of the Third Reich itself! I believe you should watch this film yourself to fully enjoy it and understand it because, to me, words can't describe the effect of this film and how moving it really is. It is also more authentic because it is in German and all the props and costumes are excellent! The acting is also wonderful and, in my opinion, is a must-see for any WWII enthusiast!
Letters from Iwo Jima (2006)
Very moving, must-see film from a Japanese perspective
Although this film is in Japanese, don't let that put you off! It is subtitled and when you are watching it, you don't even realise this because you are so interested in what is going on. I think that this film is an excellent portrayal of the battle on Iwo Jima between the Americans and Japanese during WWII. It gives an insight into the intense preparations the Japanese made to ready themselves for the attack by US Marines, and it also shows how they held out inside a complex system of caves and tunnels built inside Mount Suribachi itself. Nearer the end, the film does contain some very good action scenes, and also an excellent view of the struggle the Japanese faced from the advancing US Forces during the battle. On top of this, it also shows the determination and willingness of a Japanese soldier to lay down his life for his country, and also the honour that they fought with in doing so. A must-see film if you want to see a Japanese perspective during WWII.
