Friday the 13th (1980)
Don't kid yourself this isn't good.
No this is not a ground breaking or genre defining slasher of any era. It is a boring knock-off of much better slashers that came before it like "Texas Chainsaw Massacre," "Black Christmas," and "Halloween." The characters are half dimensional and uninteresting. So much so you don't even care when any of then kick the bucket. The characters are so dull that you aren't even really cheering for the generic final girl at the end of the film. The overall narrative is poorly constructed. This is amplified by the fact in the last 20 minutes of the film the killer is revealed to be a woman who hasn't appeared on screen or been mentioned once in the 70 minutes prior. Pamela Voorhees pretends to be nice for about a minute before exposition dumping the necessary information for her motives in a random monolog right before getting her but handed to her in final combat. It survives solely off the fact it was able to spawn many much more interesting sequels.
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance (2019)
Honors the Characters of the Original.
As a person who is a fan of the original film I was a bit worried that this would not stay true to the spirit of that story. However, It does truly honor the characters and gives even greater depths to some of the Skeksis (Chamberlain, The Scientist, and the Emperor in particular) as well as Augra. It also expands the lore and history of the world of Thra. It also introduces many new characters among the Gelfling to whom we quickly become attached. The original Dark Crystal was, well, dark for a childrens film and the show is even darker and seems to be appealing to the nostalgic Gen X'rs and Millennials who grew up watching it. Unfortunately that may have been it's downfall since the original is really a cult hit than a mainstream property and flopped commercially upon initial release so its no surprise it's namesake did the same. Though Commercial success is no indication of quality it is what decides whether or not a show will be renewed for a second season and unfortunately there will not be a second season of "The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance." My imagination will have to bridge the gap between the end of the series and the beginning of the film.
Mulan (2020)
Different is good.
As long as you aren't looking for a mindless regurgitation of the animated version and come in with an open mind you will probably enjoy it.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
Changes the Saga for the worse.
I hate to write spoilers but I have to.
With the revelation that Rey is Palpatine's granddaughter (amazing conserding he was already 85 11 years before she was born) the Saga truly becomes the Palpatine Saga rather than the Skywalker saga. The Skywalker family, Padme, Anakin, Luke, Leia, and Ben all become little more than minor players in the grand redemption of the Palpatine family (despite being responsible for the death of Billions).
The movie is also riddled with plot holes. Not minor logical nitpicks or fallacies but gaping contradictions that go against this shown or rules previously established in the saga. One such holes is how was Luke's destroyed lightsaber was magically repaired without explanation. The thing was ripped in half and now it is back together like it never happened? Finn insists he needs to tell Rey something important and never gets around to telling her. WTF? This movie sought to answer minor questions that didn't really need an answer or already had one only to create larger problems and more questions that are more puzzling and now will forever be left unanswered. Though it looks like some spin offs are being set up.
It also stole the ending from Avengers Endgame.
When all is lost an army of all your faves shows up as a large bit of nostalgia and fan service.
(Similar to the portal scene in End Game)
Climactic line
I am all the sith...
And I am all the Jedi...
Villain then disintegrates and hero dies.
How original
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019)
Disappointed
Despite what the description says this is not a true story. Despite what the marketing implies it is not about Mister Rogers. This film is a fictional family melodrama that turns Mister Rogers into a would be therapist for a man named Lloyd Vogel (Said to be based on Tom Junod though the two have almost nothing in common). This is a movie that proves filmmakers felt they couldn't make an interesting story out of the life of Fred Rogers so they had to inject it with yet another cliche family drama about yet another man with daddy issues. I am fine with movies taking some dramatic license it is almost expected but this ratio of fact to fiction is about 10% fact and 90% fiction. Tom Hanks and the cute little scene transitions are the only thing that elevate this movie and make it even remotely worth watching.
Charlie's Angels (2019)
The Fake Reviews Prove the Filmmaker's Point.
The weak insecure men wasting time writing fake 1 star reviews are dumber and more vile than any of the fictional men in this movie. They only serve to prove Elizabeth Banks right in everything she said.
As for the the movie itself. It is a decent action comedy that serves as an entertaining and light viewing experience. If the brainless sheep who rated it one star without ever watching bothered to actually see it they may have had a good time.
