Beautiful Creatures (2013)
Could have been so much better
Before watching Beautiful Creatures, I read the book first and really enjoyed it. It was especially very refreshing to read from Ethan's point of view, and not from a female's (like Twilight and The Hunger Games). However, the film did not meet my expectations. I thought the casting was very well done, especially Emma Thompson. She was fantastic and really seemed to have a lot of fun in playing Mrs. Lincoln. Alden Ehrenreich and Alice Englert were quite what I had in mind, so well done. I also liked the magical atmosphere in the film which was also present in the book. However, the storyline was significantly changed. Ethan forgetting about Lena? Genevieve killing Ethan? Amma as Keeper of the Caster library? Where is Ethan's father? Where is Boo Radley? Larkin's betrayal? The role of the spell book was quite strange, it was not explained properly. It was all too easy, too quick. And I really missed a soundtrack regarding 'Sixteen Moons', which plays such a large part in the book. Major changes, but not for the better. Also, some of my favorite parts were not included (e.g. the dance, Lena's birthday party organized by Ridley). I did like the addition regarding Ridley's Claiming, it was quite haunting.
Overall, very disappointed. It could have been so much better.
Intouchables (2011)
Heart-warming
Philippe and Driss's story is based on the friendship between Philippe Pozzo di Borgo and Abdel Sellou, proving that even two people from opposite backgrounds and life styles can create a heart-warming friendship. The film is excellent: touching and funny (even hilarious at times). Ludovico Einaudi did a great job on the soundtrack, it fits perfectly. The acting is superb, very natural. François Cluzet and Omar Sy have great chemistry together. After watching Intouchables, I just couldn't stop smiling.
I can't believe Intouchables wasn't even nominated for an Oscar. It definitely should have been on the nominated list. It's one of the best films I've seen so far. A film with a great message: to be together is better than to be alone.
Verliefd op Ibiza (2013)
Awful, awful, awful!
This may have been one of the worst movies I have seen so far. The characters are probably the worst: unbelievable, over the top, annoying. The storyline is thin, predictable.. very flawed. The two brothers who accidentally meet a world famous DJ, the young man who falls in love with an insecure middle-aged woman, the young girl sleeping with her sister's husband, the retired rock-star, etc. Overall, very cheesy. The acting is almost as bad. Especially Jan Kooijman, who has proved not to be an actor. It is quite surprising this movie was such a great success in the Dutch cinemas, although it was rightfully heavily criticized by the critics. The two stars are given for the shots made of Ibiza itself.
Don't waste your time on this!
Centurion (2010)
Enjoy it for what it is
Before watching this movie, I was a bit skeptical after reading some of the reviews. With low expectations, I decided to watch it anyway. Eventually, I wasn't disappointed. The storyline and the dialogues sometimes are a bit cliché (2 female warriors (?), a small romance stuffed into it). The plot is simple, as its merely chasing and running. However, the scenery is beautifully shot. The battles are well done, quite realistic. The actors are alright. The director isn't afraid to let most of the key characters die, which makes it more realistic. The movie is quite short, but it shouldn't have been any longer. Overall, this movie is worth the watch. But, as the majority of the reviews already pointed out, don't expect to be swept off your feet.
