Just how pathetic are men?
23 October 2011
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is firmly in the "was OK to watch but brought nothing new to the table" category. The central characters are not wholly believable, was is the first big negative for me. The unbelievable relationship dynamics was the second... and the third is the lack of consistency in their moral values and viewpoint.

As has been said before by other reviewers, the plot is pretty predictable and once the trajectory of the movie has been established (after a very shaky start I have to admit) it follows without any real surprises along the way.

The acting is mediocre at best. You've able to experience something of what she is going through but its infuriating that the men (including the doctors) are incapable of even empathizing with her inner emotional state and experience. How do you think she feels after the baby insider her, which she has felt growing and moving and kicking... suddenly being still... To have something that is lifeless inside you? The only meaningful connection for me was the lifeless and 'still' relationship she realises she has with her husband Michael.

The movie doesn't try to preach solutions, it only offers questions... which ironically annoyed me (and lost it another star). After watching this movie your just left with a dead child, a dead relationship, bankrupt morals and empty dreams and a gaping black hole where they should have been. If this movie was an attempt at answering some of the Dark Night of the Soul experiences we have in life - it failed for me. It just left me with a feeling of just how pathetic men really are...

A story that so desperately NEEDS TELLING!
23 October 2011
If you only watch one movie this month - this should be the one. Its not perfect in terms of putting a movie together but the glitches are very few. More important is the message and if you are not shocked and deeply troubled about our society after watching it I would be surprised! Human trafficking is something most of us all to readily assume is some minor issue that doesn't happen to those around us or is perpetrated by the supposedly small percentage of 'bad guys' around us. But men typically have a very different mindset about rape to how women view and feel about it - and I personally felt this depiction of the realities of the world we actually live in both horrifying and sadly sickening thanks to a virtually global scale of indifference and lip service! The lack of action on the part of the American bureaucratic system after what was happening was exposed (along with the European governments et al as well) to clean up the contractors and the representatives sent to these destabilised regions, all to well underlines the real attitude to dealing with this epidemic of trafficking, systematic rape and torture. Trafficking is certainly alive and well thanks to that attitude and indifference to deal with this issue (largely by men). The fact that she was unable to obtain work anywhere after this expose all to readily underlines the lack of interest in the private contractors to cleaning up their own operations... Deeply Sickening and Saddening!

2HRS+ of your life wasted! Don't WATCH!
23 October 2011
The only reason this movie hasn't scored a 1 is that it includes some artsy photography which has some pleasing moments. Indeed, the whole movie runs like a portfolio for a Director of Photography CV! As for plot - Seriously - Forget it. As for deep meaningful moments that are life changing and leave you in awe and with an insight that you otherwise wouldn't have had - Laughable! This movie is a total waste of time. Seriously, your better off spending a couple of hours plucking nasal hair than watching this pile of doodle... If you run out of nasal hair - go pick your nose, bite your nails or spend some time on the loo. Whatever it takes... it will still be more rewarding than this movie!

Unusual film that at least tackles the thorny subject of being born Intersex
23 November 2008
An interesting movie that explores the issue of intersex identity and the subsequent difficult relationships that such people my encounter - most because of the polarized perspective of most sis-gendered people...

The movie tried a little too hard though IMHO and the edgy feel to the locations, family dynamics and relationships explored in this movie doesn't really lend itself to opening up this subject to the audience.

In short - it fell short of my expectations of delivering a good movie on the subject of intersex people and how this impacts upon their lives and the people around them. I'd like to see this movie done in a typical 'Suburbia' setting which can then explore the social issues and attitudes more openly and really challenge what people think upon the subject.

This is an area that many people are still very stigmatized for (despite the fact that 1 in 2000 babies are born with an intersex condition!) to such an extent that the subject is not one that is readily discussed in public at all!!! The dirth of movies on this subject is also testament to the difficulty of the subject.

Four Minutes (2006)

An Excellent Film on Every Level!
23 November 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I can't readily find fault with this movie despite being fairly critical usually... It had me hooked within the first minute and didn't let me go throughout the movie!

The characters are gritty but believable and the characterization by the two lead actresses is flawless for most of the movie. The cinematography I found to be gorgeous with a rustic and brittle edge to many of the screen shots!

The slow revelation of the histories involved in the two lead women's lives shows a deeper, more tangible side to who and why they are the people they are. Some of the flashback sequences are slightly dislocating but this doesn't seriously detract from the plot. The timing of these revelations is well thought out though and we start to realize that the first question we need to ask of anyone is what their past is that has made them who they are...

It challenges a good few precepts about femininity as well along the way but this is secondary to the relationship dynamics of the psychological mother-daughter relationship that is setup here.

It asks some deep questions about the meaning of our relationships and our purpose in life that doesn't let go right to the end. This movie doesn't hold back from any of the capricious nature of life and the consequences that it often throws in our life paths. It also shows the failure of people to deal with this on a humanistic level... often resulting in shattered and wasted lives. The violence (both emotional and physical) depicts well the struggle people have with dealing with each others 'violations', towards each other.

I'd wholeheartedly recommend you see this movie! It will have you captivated from the opening sequence of the the suicide of her cell mate that Jenny sleeps through and then awakes only to then carelessly steal the last cigarette from the dead woman's body as if this is somehow a daily occurrence to the final Four Minutes that are the summation of all that Jenny is as a human being...

A fantastic portrayal of a wasted life of devotion and the emotional devastation of adultery
3 November 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I was awe struck by the telephone scene in this movie!!! It captured the moment of mental collapse of someone who has discovered that years of devotion and supposedly meaningful life has meant nothing in reality. Its shocking reality hits home in a way that I have never seen portrayed before. Having been through similar experiences I found this movie a true reflection and insight of these experiences.

The release of Edna from her life of drudgery and endless housework and instead finding true identity and meaning is a wonderful journey well explored in this movie.

Definitely a Must See!

At least a Decent Lesbian love story with lots of romance!
4 July 2006
Other comments have covered this film fairly well so I'll not repeat the obvious I hope. The lesbian community has a dirth of good quality movies that are engaging and real. OK - this movie is a typical in many regards (its portrayal of men etc) but as a main-stream title it portrays love for what it should be - the person and not the gender. It gets under your skin and some sound values come through about gender and seeing beyond the surface level of people. It also entirely fails at others - she should NEVER have been cheating on her husband and lying through her teeth. The moral values here are really very low and seriously detract from an otherwise good movie! This alone lost it two points for me reducing it to just a good watch movie.

It was very engaging and shows the importance of respect and dignity that needs to be given to people. It touches deeply the issues of true love and shows that it is a subliminal and undefinable thing.

The film does fall into the Chick Flick market a little but straight women will get a lot out of this movie as well I suspect. The lack of violent action (not even a street fist fight for entertainment) may leave the guys a little bored though (depending on their taste for lesbian romance...).

So it will be on my "top 5" lesbian interest movie list I think! If you haven't seen it Do So!!! You'll Love It!!! With the proviso that the moral compass is seriously messed with here... If only she had been honest and not married him or at least been open about her mixed feelings...

Some Good Content - just skip the 1st 45min!
3 June 2006
The first 45 min of this movie is straight out of Murder She Wrote style of directing and acting *Rolls Eyes* Hence only a 7 vote for me... However - skip past the first 45 minutes of plain bad acting, directing and script etc etc etc and the remaining hour is actually well worth the watch! The plot will not suffer any for skipping this first 45 min - indeed this would have been better as a short movie.

Directed by a lesbian this movies has some good stuff to say about both hetero and lesbian relationships and the dynamics of each from a woman's perspective. It was all good sound stuff and I found it thought provoking and it held my attention. The romance and seductive scenes are also quite sensuous and 'worked' for me *smile* They show how a lesbian relationship may grow and develop for a hetero woman who has become bored of men being so 'easy' when it comes to sex. She finds that her 'power' simply doesn't work that way when it comes to women. Lesbian relationships being based upon very different dynamics to those of hetero relationships...

Hope you enjoy this movie too. :o))

Good film than explores more than the obvious issues of cloning
13 March 2006
Overall a very watchable film. I liked the deeper levels of identity that this film also touched upon. At what point does a 'manufactured' copy become so close to the original that the two are undifferentiatable...? At what point does someone cease to be what they were and become what they are as a whole human being? These issues include much that is of wider importance - take transsexualism and how society deals with this, are all part of this debate as well.

Fundamental to all of this is human dignity and the respect we need to afford all life irrespective of our own definition or sense of 'Humanity'. I hope the film gives you food for thought!

Worth watching but says more about male sexual bigotry than transsexualism!
26 January 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I was both pleased to have watched this real life story and also much saddened by it. The stereotypical prejudices of men are certainly given 'full swing' here! Its worth a watch if your interested in issues of prejudice, hate crime, and obviously transsexualism and how it impacts regarding both personal understanding and wider relationships and the struggles and heartache that is caused by the congenital condition. Not easy watching and the bloody scenes at the end are graphic enough to get the message across but does not go further and touch on their emotional impact on her and her future life path. I'd personally liked to have seen a Soldiers Girl 2 continuing the story!
