Blindspotting (2018)
10/10
Black Lives Matter.
9 June 2020
Blindspotting (2018) is a drama film directed by Carlos López Estrada. It was written and produced by its two lead actors: Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal. You may know Daveed from Hamilton.

Blindspotting tells the story of Collin Hoskins, a convicted felon who is struggling to finish the last three days of his probation. Collin, along with his short-tempered best friend Miles, works for a moving company located in California. One night whilst waiting at a red light, Collin witnesses a white police officer gun down a black civilian. Collin is haunted by the incident, he begins to have nightmares and experiences hallucinations. At the same time, Miles becomes distraught by the gentrification of Oakland, and a resulting sense of loss of identity, home, and belonging.

Both Diggs and Casal were an absolute delight to watch in this movie. Daveed Diggs gives the performance of his career here and it really shows how great of an actor he is. The ending was so tense, I felt like the movie had its hands around my throat and I was just waiting for it to let go and let me breathe again. When it finally did, I sat in silence for a good five minutes just thinking about this movie and how true to life it is.

With everything that's going on in the real world recently, this movie is VERY relatable and unfortunately, heartbreaking.

I recommend everybody to go and watch Blindspotting. It's on Netflix!

I Still Believe.
20 May 2020
I Still Believe (2020) is a biopic directed by the Erwin Brothers and tells the story of Christian musician Jeremy Camp and how he held onto his faith no matter what life threw his way.

Going into this movie I had very low expectations. Having read bad reviews, I was expecting it to be rather mediocre, if not bad. I am happy to say that I was mistaken. I Still Believe shocked me and caught me by surprise and became one of my favourite movies of 2020 so far.

K.J. Apa of Riverdale fame portrayed Jeremy excellently. His heart breaking performance paired his impressive vocals make this movie a devastating, roller-coaster ride of emotions.

Britt Robertson played Melissa, Jeremy's wife, and her performance was fantastic, especially in the emotional scenes.

I would recommend this movie to anybody who enjoys movies about Music. I am looking forward to watching more from the Erwin Brothers.

Vampyr (1932)

Vampyr
21 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Vampyr (1932) is a gothic horror movie that was directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer. It tells the story of Allan Gray, a man who takes up lodgings in a small inn in the village of Courtempierre. Gray has a particular interest in the supernatural. Shortly after arriving at the inn, he starts to feel uneasy as if a sinister force is descending upon him. In the middle of the night he is suddenly awoken by an old man who tells him 'she must not die.' The mans daughter, Leone, has been bitten by a vampire and in order to break the curse, Gray and Leone's sister, Gisele must find the sire vampire and drive a stake through its heart.

The atmosphere of Vampyr, partnered with its visual effects, make it one of the creepier horror movies from the 1930's that I have personally seen. With minimal dialogue, the tone of this movie stayed extremely intense for almost the entirety of its runtime.

I would recommend this movie to anybody who enjoys gothic horror or creepy, dark movies.

Elephant (2003)

The Elephant in the Room.
20 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Elephant (2003) is a crime thriller that was written and directed by Gus Van Sant, better known as the director of Good Will Hunting.

The phrase 'Elephant in the room' is an idiom used to describe a problem that everyone chooses to ignore and not face the reality. The phrase is also used to describe issues that are looked at as social taboos such as homosexuality, race, religion, and mental illness. The titular Elephant's in this movie are the shooters; two homosexual teenagers that are bullied and ignored by their peers.

The story revolves around several high school students as they go through their daily routine as two others prepare for something more malevolent. Almost all of the kids in this film were non-actors who used their real first names for their characters. In my opinion, this, and the fact that most of the script was improvised makes the movie feel a lot more realistic than if the cast was filled with well known actors.

To me, Elephant is an exposé of how actions that people think have no effect, can actually have ones beyond measure.

My favourite thing about 'Elephant' was Van Sant's direction. The long hallway shots. The repetition of the same scene from different points of view, and the movement of the characters was really well done.

Elephant was released in 2003, 4 years after the Columbine Massacre, which was Van Sant's biggest inspiration behind the film. It caused a lot of controversy upon release, due to it being so soon after the tragic event.

Welles delivers once again
14 April 2020
Chimes at Midnight (1965) is written and directed by Orson Wells who also stars as Falstaff, the Shakespeare character from the 'Henriad'. Welles takes the scripts of all three plays and turns them into one solid, coherant and personal story of the companion of Prince Hal. Orson Welles is an absolute delight fantastic as Falstaff. His voice reciting Shakespeare is like music to the ears. After viewing this, I am interested to see Welles' Macbeth.

I really enjoyed the effects they used in this.

The image of the theatre screen and the image of the theatre and theatre-goers were photographed separately, and the final effect was achieved by double printing and use of a travelling matte.

The Graduate (1967)

Here's to you, Mrs. Robinson.
6 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The Graduate (1967) is a film directed by Mike Nichols, which stars Dustin Hoffman as Ben, a man who starts an affair with his parent's friend after she tries to seduce him. Ben is stuck in the in-between, after graduating from college and struggling to decide what he wants to do next. As their affair persists, Ben starts to realise that he may just be making a mistake. Enter Elaine, the beautiful daughter of Ben's lover, and chaos soon ensues as Ben tries to navigate the love triangle he has found himself tangled up in. The Graduate has one of the best soundtracks to a movie that has ever blessed my ears, written by Paul Simon and performed by Simon & Garfunkel. The Sound of Silence, Scarborough Fair and Mrs. Robinson reprise throughout the film and they become more and more meaningful and relatable as the movie goes on. I definitely recommend this classic for the soundtrack alone.

Beautifully horrific.
2 April 2020
Meshes of the Afternoon (1943) is a 14 minute short film directed by Maya Daren, who also stars as the film's lead. It is a surreal horror movie that tells the story of a woman who comes across a flower, deliberately laid in her path by a hooded figure. She takes the flower home with her and smells it, breathing in its poisonous aroma. The unnamed woman then falls asleep and starts to experience vivid dreams that may just well be reality. Who was the person who gave her this flower? What was their motive? This short film is one of the best short films I have personally seen up to now. It was creepy and the imagery was, at times, terrifying. I'll definitely be watching more of Maya Deren's filmography.

La Jetée (1962)

This movie stands the test of time.
26 March 2020
La Jetée, or The Pier (1962) is a Science Fiction movie that is made from only still images. It tells the story of a prisoner in the aftermath of World War III, who is forced to travel back and forth in time to find a solution to the world's fate and to replenish its decreasing stocks of food, medicine and energy. This is the first movie I've seen whose story is told using still images, and I found it rather disturbing. La Jetée was the inspiration behind Terry Gilliam's 1995 classic 'Twelve Monkeys'. I thoroughly enjoyed this crazy movie.

Parasite (2019)

Who were the titular Parasites?
16 February 2020
Parasite (Gisaengchung) (2019) is directed and written by Bong Joon Ho. It is a thriller that tells the story of a poor, Lower class family that slowly worm their way into the household of a rich, upper class family. One by one the family get hired to do a job, with the employers unaware that they are a family. Things take an unexpected turn in the third act and I can honestly say that I wasn't expecting the way that this movie ended up. I really enjoyed Parasite and in my opinion, it deserves the Academy Awards that it won.

Stage to Screen.
14 December 2019
American Son (2019) is a Netflix adaptation of a Broadway play. The story revolves around an estranged interracial couple who spend the night at a police station whilst the authorities try to help them find their missing Son. This movie deals with the issues of racism and the challenges that people of colour still face on a daily basis. The brutality of this movie was harsh, but it was needed and it was done rather well. The standout for me was Jeremy Jordan playing a local cop. It was enjoyable to see him playing such an unlikable character.

The king (2019)
25 November 2019
The King (2019) is a historical drama that takes place in the 15th century. It centres on the story of Henry V after he is crowned King of England following the death of his father. The main focus of the film is the battles between England and France. The battle scenes were fantastically Choreographed and the cinematography was, at times, gorgeous. As a big fan of history, I was not disappointed by this film. Robert Pattinson's French accent earns bonus points for The King. Timothée Chalamet was great as Henry V.

Modern Times (1936) is a comedy movie starring Charlie Chaplin. I have to admit, this is my least favourite Chaplin film that I've seen. I just didn't get it. I think it's due to the fact that there is talking involved.

Robert De Niro was fantastic
4 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The Deer Hunter (1978) is a psychological thriller about the effect that the Vietnam war had on a trio of friends. Robert de Niro and Christopher Walken play their parts fantastically and the famous Russian roulette scene had me on the edge of my seat. The criticism I have of this film is that the hour long first act wasn't needed at all and it could've been trimmed down to make the movie go by a little quicker. Robert De Niro was the stand out for me.

The World is Yours.
4 November 2019
Scarface (1932) is a gangster film about a mans rise to the top of the mob right from the bottom. As Tony starts to become richer and more powerful, he slowly loses his mind and becomes more unhinged as he turns on the people who were there for him from the beginning. The action sequences in this were rather good for the 1930's. I have seen and enjoyed Al Pacino's famous remake of Scarface, and it was great to see all of the little nods and connections and be able to understand them more than before.

Crime comedy.
4 November 2019
The Family (2013) is a gangster comedy movie starring Robert de Niro, Tommy Lee Jones and Michelle Pfeiffer. The movie shows A crime family living in witness protection and trying to get used to their new lives. I thought the comedy was great and some of the gags really made me laugh. I enjoyed this movie. I watched it as it was produced by Martin Scorsese, but stayed for Robert de Niro's performance. I found the aspect of the mafia mixed in with the comedy really interesting and would like to see more.

City Lights (1931)

The Tramp.
3 November 2019
City Lights (1931) is a silent comedy movie that is directed by Charlie Chaplin. Chaplin plays a Tramp who falls in love with a blind girl who believes he is a rich man. He then saves a rich mans life, who proceeds to pay him money on multiple occasions. The Tramp gives the girl this money to save up for an operation that can bring back her sight. What follows is an emotional rollercoaster of a movie that fills you with laughter and sadness. This really is Chaplin at his best. This film was made in 1931, when movies had sound in them and a lot of companies were now producing talkies, rather than silent movies. Chaplin, thinking that sound would be a killer of the industry, decided to make City Lights a silent film anyway. Whilst he may have been wrong about sound being the end of the movie industry, this film being made as a silent movie was a very good idea. I really enjoyed the way he incorporated tiny bits of sound into his humour. One of the scenes involved him swallowing a whistle and every time he breathed out, he let out a toot.

The third best picture winner.
1 November 2019
All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) is a war movie that does NOT try to glorify going to war like others from the genre. It was the third movie to win 'best picture' at the Academy Awards and it deserved it. It shows you how harrowing, terrifying and haunting it is to be on the front lines. It shows you the marks that the wars leave on the soldiers bodies and souls when they who are lucky enough to, return home. The action sequences in this film were beautifully shot and seemed so realistic. This is easily one of the best war films I have watched and I am ashamed I left it so long.

This is Halloween.
31 October 2019
The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) is an animated movie that is known to a lot of people as the best Halloween movie. I watched it for the first time tonight, and I have to admit that I just didn't get it. Whilst I thought the stop-motion was very impressive and the soundtrack by Danny Elfman was beautiful, I just didn't get the hype. My biggest take away from The Nightmare Before Christmas is that I need to watch more Stop-motion. I would also like to hear more from Danny Elfman.

31 October 2019
Beauty and the beast (2017) is one in a long line of Disney live-action remakes and is, in my opinion, one of the better of the bunch. It is far superior to Cinderella. The cinematography of the whole film was absolutely beautiful. Alan Menken did a fantastic job with the score. My favourite thing about this movie was Luke Evans as Gaston. That was perfect casting.

Creepy!
30 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Häxan, aka Witchcraft Through the Ages (1922) is a silent film documentary that explores the origins and history of witchcraft and it's pagan roots. Some of the imagery here is rather creepy and lingers in the brain long after viewing, such as a baby being help over a cauldron, a close-up of a man getting his finger chopped off and multiple torture devices being used. I was really impressed by one scene in particular which involved a stop-motion demon ripping a door to pieces. That was REALLY good effects for the 20's. The Devil looked great too!
