High Society (2017)

Hilarious satire - one of my faves
17 April 2020
I really don't understand the low rating. This movie is genius! Its satirical humor is easily on the level of "Scream Queens". Honestly, there are so many iconic quotes. I've probably seen it six times now and I still laugh out loud. People who dislike this, must have no understanding of satire and hate fun. The star-studded cast perfectly embody these clichéd characters and play really well off each other. (I also loved seeing Rick Kavanian again - in a role that is just perfect for him and will have you remember the times of Bully Parade). Furthermore, every straight woman, gay man (and straight man who is secure in his sexuality) will REALLY appreciate Jannis Niewöhner in a police uniform. I mean, damn...

"High Society" will have you in stitches with its dark and satirical humor but it still manages to have its tender moments and heartfelt scenes. You can even shed a tear, if you're in the mood.

So, star-studded cast, hilarious satire, a lot of heart, a good soundtrack,... what else could you want? Not to mention the production value makes you forget you're watching a German movie - and not a Hollywood production.

The only reason I'm not giving this 10 stars? There really should have been a better, more melodic song for the ending scene. Even though the main characters are in their mid-twenties, the fact that there is a narrator, combined with the way the ending is filmed, gives me a bit of a "late 90s / early 00s teenage movie vibe" - which I loooove. But you know what those movies always had? A banging ending song (I'm thinking "10 things I hate about you"). That really would have been the cherry on top.

"High Society" is way underrated and has stolen its way into my all-time-favorite list.

Kingdom (2019–2020)

Enjoyable but not life-changing

If you like Zombies, this is definitely a must-watch. I watched the whole thing in a day because it's short. However, I took several breaks to text people back or watch Youtube videos. That would not have happened if it had REALLY captured me. I like the idea of Zombies in the Joseon era, the production is great, the cinematography beautiful, the acting good. There were definitely some really suspenseful scenes where I barely dared to breathe. But there was not really anything that touched me.

I don't feel like I got to know the characters at all, so I did not get attached to them - not even to the Crown Prince. The only character I enjoyed a bit more was the guard played by Kim Sang Ho, whom I've adored ever since "City Hunter" (2011).

Furthermore, I think a better OST would have greatly improved my emotional investment. Am I gonna watch season 2? Yes. But is "Kingdom" gonna be on my all-time-favorite Drama list? No.

Crash Landing on You (2019–2020)

Will touch the deepest part of your soul!

"Even if it breaks my heart because it's a dream that can't come true, I'd like to sincerely dream of the future."

I finished this Drama an hour ago and I am still just sitting here, not knowing what to do,...or to write, for that matter. I am floored. My heart aches. I am happy and sad and amazed and grateful to have been able to watch this masterpiece. I honestly don't know where to begin. My heart is so full.

"Crash Landing On You" is a master class in screenwriting. The pacing, the revelations through flashbacks and unlinear storytelling, the perfect balance between tragedy, romance and humor,...and God, the characters!

How is it possible to make each and every character of such a big ensemble so complex, relatable and loveable? I was so attached to every single character, that at some point I basically cried through entire episodes, because even when there were happy scenes, I kept thinking that things would probably not stay like that for all my poor babies. At any given time, while watching CLOY, I just had to think of the whole South Korea - North Korea predicament that they are all in and the tears started flowing.

The scenes between Jung Hyuk and Se Ri are so raw and real that I often cried, as well. They say crying doesn't necessarily mean you're sad, it just means you are overwhelmed with emotion - no matter which emotion. And that's exactly how I felt. I was so overwhelmed that I cried when it was sad, romantic and funny.

I cried buckets and buckets of tears but I also laughed so hard that my stomach was sore the next day. There are so many funny moments in both, North and South Korea, but I think my favorite was Se Ri's department store opening. I almost died laughing.

As an aspiring screenwriter and filmmaker, I am deeply humbled by the masterful stroytelling and breathtaking cinematography. There are so many gorgeous settings, such as all the snow scenes, the night of the train break-down and all the scenes in Switzerland.

I am Swiss and I've never seen Switzerland portrayed so beautifully. It made me fall in love with my own country, again. It was strange to see the tram I take every week in a K-Drama. It was strange to see the place I spent vacations as a child. It was strange to see the sights I walk past every day, and have them shown in a new light, looking at them through the eyes of these characters to whom Switzerland represents happiness and their own little paradise. Somehow, seeing some of these incredibly emotional scenes against the Swiss backdrop, made them even more emotional for me.

I can't mention the Switzerland scenes without mentioning how perfect the OST is, especially "The Song For My Brother", "Flower", "Sunset, "Here I Am Again", "The Hill of Yearning" and "Photo of My Mind", which are the perfect musical expression of the Drama's atmosphere and emotions.

Last but not least, the acting is brilliant! I've loved Hyun Bin ever since "A Millionaire's First Love", and his on-screen chemistry with Son Ye Jin is out of this world. I am also very happy to have been introduced to Kim Jung Hyun, Lee Shin Young and Seo Ji Hye through this Drama.

This drama touched the deepest parts of my soul and will forever stay with me!

City Hunter (2011)

Absolutely brilliant!

My favorite K-Drama. It has everything: A revenge plot, slow burn romance, humor, an amazing OST, great action scenes and mind-blowing plot twists. Really great acting, as well and Lee Joon Hyuk is to die for. I've seen it twice now and both times I was laughing out loud, squealing, screaming (I'm not kidding, ask my neighbours) and crying. It's a wild ride, an absolute emotional rollercoaster and you get so attached to the characters. Also, Lee Minho and Lee Joon Hyuk's chemistry is amazing. Their relationship is the best among all the characters.

V-Wars (2019)

Great show

Binged the whole thing in a day. Great cast, interesting plot. I was a bit uncomfortable with the treatment of black characters, though. And I wish there would've been a better soundtrack. So there is room for improvement in season 2.

Jaws (1975)

Most overrated movie ever!
12 May 2019
A bunch of bland white men engage in 2 hours of boring conversation in which they manage to never show an emotion, other than aggression (even if their children just almost died), while they are trying to kill a living creature, without ever feeling an ounce of empathy. The music does not fit the feeling of the scenes half the time and these pathetic characters' attempt to one up each other in their toxic masculinity almost got my eyeballs stuck from all the rolling they had to do. I really wanted the shark to eat all of their crusty asses. I would much rather watch Sharknado - at least that did not put me to sleep and make me hate all its (male) characters. There, I said it.

1/2 star for the shark 1/2 for the scene in the cage
