Torchwood (2006–2011)

Top many characters sharing one braincell: in a good way!
24 July 2021
Oh whelp this show gets a lot of hate! Its a dr Who spin-off staring the horniest gay captain to ever grace the telly screen, what did you expect??

First two season are very Dr Who style - monster of the week, the scooby doo gang out on a mission to defeat the monster and they do so gracefully and like champions. Each character brings their own set of dorkness to the table, and who can ever look John Barrowman in the eye and tell the man that he's not the most charismatic chisseled-jawline-with-great-humour to ever star in a sci fi show?

Seasons three and four however... Had their moments but weren't exactly great. Torchwood was at its best with the banter, fun monsters, bisexual tension throughout and just the overall vibe of the Hub.

Torchwood is good, ligthearted, tongue-in-cheek sci fi fun that still manages to invoke all the feels at the right moments. If you are looking for arthouse material, you came to the wrong place.

Bo Burnham: Inside (2021 TV Special)

if this isn't the sepcial that will mark this era I will complain
10 June 2021
You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll get existential dread and everything and everything all of the time.

But seriously. All this is, is a man in a messy room with some fancy lighting and a camera. This man took those facilities and WENT with it... at some point you don't know what is staged and what isn't. The surrealism of this whole godfosaken pandemic is captured in very personal detail, up close, raw, sometimes a bit unsettling, but nothing short of genius.

Just watch this. And take care of your mental health. It's more important than ever.

Good Omens (2019– )

Found myself a new addiction
11 January 2021
So once in a while I completely hyperfocus on something and ir becomes the greatest thing in my universe. The last time that happened was with Lord of the Rings. I guess that speaks volumes on how high the bar is for me to be completely blown away by something to such an extend.

The only thing that keeps me from giving this a solid 10 is the okay-ish plot and the one-dimensional side characters. But that is not what you watch Good Omens for. The reasons to watch it are the absolute wonderfull, lovable, utter DELIGHTS called Aziraphale and Crowley. Micheal Sheen and David Tennant have outdone themselves on this fantastic supernatural duo. An Angel and a Demon, who both suck at their jobs because they love living among humans too much. Their love for the earth and all it inhabits is the driving force to flip the bird to their respective head-offices, telling them to shove their plans to end the world so they can have a war up their asses. But above all, it's not-so-secretly and mostly their love for each other that makes them suffer through literall hell itself in order to save the other. Call it what you want, but as it was confirmed by the actors and writers alike, Good Omens is first and foremost, a lovestory. And it shows!

Good Omens is in one word, a delight. Witty, smart, filled with brilliant actors, hilarious naration and two of the best-written (and acted) characters that have ever graced the small screen. Aziraphale and Crowley will make you love this show as much as they love each other!

Heavy Trip (2018)
9/10
Near perfect comedy gold!
30 June 2019
I love metal and i'm in a band myself. I was bound to find some relatable subjects in this movie and the movie delivered! Heavy Trip follows a young group of Finnish extreme metal heads in their journey to make it to a metal festival in Norway, come hell or high water. Beside the comedy, the story is't afraid to become realistic and even touching on some moments too. In my humbe opinion, that is how comedy's are supposed to be. A good laugh but also with some good emotions to carry the story. The movie is jam-packed with delightfuly offensive and crude humor, as long as you find extreme vomiting, jokes on terrorism and the mental handicapped, and digging up graves a funny thing. And as far as metalheads go, that is usualy the case. All four of the bandmembers that form the main cast are their own, special little personality. My favourite remaining drummer Jynkky. A not too bright of a lad with big dreams and a good heart. Reminds me a lot of my ow guitarplayer!

Finns always have had a rich metal culture and it translated well into the movie. It is ridiculous but in a good way. It doesn't poke fun of the genre, but rather showcases the over-the-top fun of it. All in all, i think i tore a muscle while laughing at this movie and i advise it to every metalhead to watch this treasure! Horns up! \m/

Extremely underrated movie!
7 May 2019
I'll admit, i'm not a fan of horror movies. I'm too much of a wuss for it and i'm surprised Mothman is even labeled as one. It's eerie and deals with the supernatural, but it's not terrifying in the least.

Richard Gere does a great job as the broken widow looking for answers surrounding his wife's untimely and strange death, and finds it in the strangest place. After mysteriously ending up in West Virginia after just a short drive from Washinton DC, he starts to become involved in a series of unexplained and eerie events, all surrounding the mysterious and spooky Mothman.

Some scenes get really under your skin when it comes to creepyness. When John Klein (Richard Gere) recieves a phone call from the so called Mothman - introducing himself as Indrid Cold - the voice you hear is so fantastically unsettling. I love how even the action scenes where a bridge collapses are shown pretty humble and un-hollywood like. The fear is brilliantly protrayed wihout too much flashy and exploding froo-froo. If you lik movies about the supernatural without it getting horror-like scary, this is a great film to watch! Wether you believe if events and beings like this actually exist or not, this movie is going to make you feel unsettling.

Smallfoot (2018)

Better than i expected!
29 December 2018
It's not disney/pixar, its not dreamworks. Being that i had no idea what to expect when i dived into this movie and honestly i didn't expect much. I found myself getting hiccups from laughter halfway trough and feeling my heart warm up at the end. Smallfoot has a slapstick type of humor that is right up my alley. I haven't laughed this hard about animated jackass-like shenanigans since i watched loony tunes as a kid. So that's plus number one about this flick. The songs are heartwarming and made my eyes watery. Something only Disney could do for me so far. The overall message is kind of on the nose though, and the only thing keeping me from giving this movie a 10/10 rating. Yes, invorimental issues, social boundaries, religious dogma and the like are topical subjects but dear lord, can you get more literal with them? At first i though, oh no, we don't need more cliche's about the matter. Humanity needs to learn some lessons blablabla WE KNOW! But Smallfoot brings it in a way that will only remind you that it needs to be adressed on the nose or else the message will never get across. And the thing is; Smallfoot doesn't adress just one issue, but multiple. Like i said, religion, social boundaries, self-worth, bullying, daring to look beyond, being true to yourself and being concious about the people around you and why they do certain things, all of it is adressed, mashed up in a funny, timeless and original landscape that is the Yeti community high up the Himalayan mountains.

Magical troughout!!
26 July 2018
This movie has been out for 6 years and despite hearing about it here and there, it never crossed my mind to go watch it. I honestly thought it was some lame ass attempt to make superheroes out of Santa and the Easter bunny. Boy was I wrong!

Every single scene is riddled with emotion and there was something every minute that left me in awe. I don't think I have seen many movies where every single character - and i mean every one- even if they are an extra that is in frame for 2 seconds - has a such an expressive, charismatic appearance. It made me feel all the feels and more! Messages about hope, facing your fears, magic, believing in yourself and in miracles are brought to you in a way that hits home. I'm a sucker for animated movies with a lot of heart and this one wrapped my heart in a warm cuddly blanket. There are so many moments that make you go "awww" and the first half of the movie is so incredible endearing and charming, while the second half gets more serious and really engaging. The villian here - the Boogyman - is protrayed like a real devil. Sly, charming, cunning, dark but intriguing. You even think at one point that his reasons for doing his evil are justified. He's not a 100% villian, he tries to get on your gullible good side, and that is exactly what a devil does. Outstanding character in every way! Making Santa a big, tough Russian cuddle-tank was a daring move but it worked like a charm. His facial expressions can speak novels within a single shot.... the animation department gave full attention to the characters' emotions and they nailed it! If you haven't seeen this one, you. are. missing. out!!! Out there with Coco, How to Train your Dragon and Wall-E.

A movie that puts Arab animation on the map!
25 July 2018
I've heard that this is the first and only animated movie from the middle east. They have certainly made a calling card! It can be best described as a mix between Prince of Egypt and Kingdom of Heaven. A slave stands up to overthrow his masters. A classic tale, with a twist of historical truth.

The animation is nothing short of stunning. Every detail of clothing and hair is rendered to perfection and the filmmakers like to remind you of that every other scene by putting their handiwork in close-up. The message is strong and the battle scenes epic. However what this movie lacks is a sense of consisincy. Sometimes you take a leap forward in time and the story picks up somewhere almost random. Nothing prepares you for it, and it feels like you are missing chunks of the story. Like how the hell did the main characters only arrived in a city in one shot and have created an army to rally against slave masters in the next?

I do have to point out that despite it looking like an exciting, adventurous movie for the family, it really isn't. For an animated movie it has it's cut of pretty violent battle scenes and harsh deaths. Like i said; reminds a lot of Kingdom of Heaven.

So though a bit rough at the edges, it is certainly worth to watch, and our western animation studios can certainly learn something from this one!

Sanctum (2011)

can't understand the hate, this movie is a thrillride!
15 July 2018
This movie gets a lot of negative reviews, because i think people expect a wrong kind of movie. Yes the emotional shots linger a bit too long here and some characters you just want to smack in the face for just being a one-dimensional dick but that are honestly the only flaws i can find. Some movies use certain devices to sell a story, like more focus on the action instead of character build up, some use more emotion and less suspensefull scenes, some use it all, and those are mostly classified as a masterpiece. But not every movie has every device covered, and that's ok. This one is propelled by the intense feel of claustophobia, tension, excitement and suspense. Sure it lacks on the other departments a bit but that is not what holds this movie together. What it's not good at, meh, it wasn;t meant to be it;s selling point anyway. But what ths movie does best - it does so with grace, and that is keeping you to the edge of your seat! Highly reccomend people who suffer from claustrophobia or fear of drowning to skip this movie, because every scene only feeds that anxiety. If you don't have these fears yet, believe me, you will get a good taste of it.

Love Is All (2007)

A rare Dutch gem
12 July 2018
Honestly, there aren't many movies from my homecountry that i like, and if i hate one genre; it's sappy romances. This romance is however far from sappy! It uses humor, a grounded Dutch view on every topic, a good dose of sillyness and compelling characters to deliver a heartwarming story, full of important messages. Some cliché, some aren't, and some are plain in-your-face. The use of the Dutch famous holiday Sinterklaas makes it a movie that can be enjoyed with the whole family, although it is riddled with (sometimes not so) subtles innuendo's. There are a few things that maybe confuse foreign viewers, like what the Sinterklaas holiday actually is about. (no it's not santa clause) and little references to Dutch celebrity culture here and there.

Game Night (I) (2018)

Smart movie that's guarenteed good time!
31 May 2018
While it is adverted as a ''hilarious'' comedy, i must admit my mouth corners didn't agree. Got a good chuckle out of some things but the hilarity kinda falls flat on it's face. With the humor being the bulk of what the movie has to offer, it's not much. Not to mention the ton of pop-culture references that will be outdated pretty fast. (Dear moviemakers, never popculture reference fleeting media hypes.. just don't.)

however...

with that minor point out of the way, there is actually nothing left but praise. Hilarious? neh, not so much, but still a damn good time! The setup is simple: people play a game where someone is supposed to get kidnapped, then that happens, but the kidnap happens to be real.... so you wanna think!! And then come the tripple fake-pay off that it is fake after all - then it isn't - then it is again and then it isn't... or is it??? That point was maybe kind of lame but it didn't matter, because that was not the vocal point of the movie. The vocal point was how smart it was all put together - something you especially notice in the end credits! (my god.. the details!) And that is something this flick n.a.i.l.e.d!! The acting was very good and the person that did make me laugh the most was Rachel McAdams with her dryer-than-sahara humor, or her just reacting to things. The rest of the cast is kinda ragtagged along but that's ok for this type of movie. You don't wanna look for deep-going character development, you just wanna have a good time. It's just a lighthearted, good, fun movie, nothing more, nothing less.

We need more fantasy movies like this!!
19 May 2018
I see a lot of nay-sayers in the review section. Bear in mind: this movie was not made by hollywood, so don't expect one. It's the work-of-passion by a brillaint band, lead by the brilliant mind of Toumas Holopainen. With the small budget, time and space they had making this movie, I say they did one hell of a job.

No, the characters aren't ''deep'' and the acting isn't oscar winning either, but if you are gonna whine about that you are missing the point of this movie,. Nightwish - great band as they are - tried to deliver a powerful message using creative imagery and delving into a realm of fantasy movie making that this world seriously lacks and needs more of! And they nailed it!

The premisse is simple: A man called Thomas falls into coma after battling dementia for several years, and surpressed feelings about his neglecting father emerge, as well as feelings for the daugther who he as forgotten. Thing is: daughter left daddy to forget her all the same. (a topical subject that needs attention as it is). All of this comes to life in a very imaginitive, creativily outstanding dreamworld, that he uses to regain his memory and make amends with all that he has lost and forgotten in life. Laced in between is the -almost biographic, considering the sate of Nightwish themselves at the time - story of the band that fell apart, leaving scars in Thomas' mind. One would even think this movie is a portrayal of the personal fears of Tuomas Holopainen himself for that matter, considering the depression he fought with in the aftermath of all the bands turmoil over the years.

I can say a lot more about it, but it comes down to this: forget for a moment that this was made by a band as an ''extended music video'' (it isn't, this IS a full, stand alone movie). and see them as suppliers of the wonderfull soundtrack supporting this heartwarming tale. Almost certain that people who even never heard of Nightwish but do appreciate an honest, small and endearing fantasy movie will enjoy this. In any case; go watch it!

artsy and humerous, but what in the hell did i watch?
19 May 2018
I heard of it being a classic must-watch, so i watched it. It's one of those movies that apparantly requires a certain taste for the lightheartidly absurd, if I had to describe it as anything.

It borderlines arthouse material, with every single scene being centered to the last inch. If anything, this movie continues to grab your attention by putting every character, in ever moment dead-center. You have no idea if this even takes place on planet earth, or in a parallel reality. The country in which it takes place is somethting vaguely German-European and when there is a sporadic mention of a war -an element that is marketed to be a key plot point but really the movie is the same if it were without it - they even go as far as renaming SS to ZZ. I mean... what?

The story doesn't have much to it - it's a man telling a story, about another man telling a story on how he was the protegé of an esteemed congierge of the dubious hotel. How said hotel has fallen into ruin in the first place is hardly mentioned, and the story that you'd expect - about the hotel itself you'd presume - becomes a weird tale on art thieves, a dead widow and a shady testament. Could be fun, and it kinda is, but the manner in which it all is told is silly to say the least. Something monty-python like posh slapstick humour almost. So yeah, weird and silly, but strangely amusing at the same time. Still wondering why the hell some characters were portrayed as being a vampire or werewolf without ANY reason for them to be those things in this premis! All in all: masterpiece? naah. The only thing masterpiece worthy here is the acting. Too bad Tilda Swinton had such a short role - I love that woman in every role she plays! Ralph Fiennes' posh but foul-mouthed caharcter is a delight, there are some teeny tiny roles for Owen Wilson and Bill Murray and Tony Revolori has a very endearing character. They amused me well anough for leaving this movie a positive review but other than that it just left me confused.

Domino (2005)
6/10
Good story in a bad wrapper.
17 May 2018
First thing that needs to be said is; don't watch this if you are prone to seizures. The camera/editing work is the most annoying I have ever seen, with a continuous green filter and a jumpcut every second. It's a pain to watch, and that is the number 1 thing that takes this movie down.

The story is really not bad though, if it wasn't being told so incoherently, it can be very enjoyable. Plot devices are being laid down like cards on a table, then hussled together and shoved away to be pulled out of the sleeve at the movie's convenience, wether they add something to the deck or not, like the really unnesseccary piece that is the reality show. What a waste of Christopher Walken! Scenes don't make sense until the movie takes the whopping time of two seconds to explain them. It's like trying to read a story on a rapidly moving slideshow.

On to the story itself: It's a clever game of crime, backstabbing, honour, revenge and greed, containing a pawn for each subject. With the rebel Domino Harvey as the queen, centering the onslought. The movie took an actual person as a base and slapped a fictional tale on it, and that is indeed quite a tale! There is so much happening that it's hard to explain. What do this trailertrash guy with his arm cut off and a sick little girl have in common - what is their link? That is the story the movie portrayes, and it takes as many detours as you'd expect from these brutally different characters. Some detours are good points, some are utter rubbish. Yes, it's as messy and confusing as it sounds, but that is all you are gonna get from this review without any spoilers.

Actingwise i have nothing to complain. We all know Keira Knightley as the whiney little sass-pirate she played in another popular franchise and it didn't do her justice. I disliked her as a actress for that role but she playes Domino with passion. She's convincing to say the least. Mickey Rourke is a pleasure to watch and i wish his character had more to it then the movie showed. The acting is great but it gets blurred - literally!- by the movie's killer pacing, lack of depth and the damned flashy edditing.

All in all a mess of a movie, but I don't regret watching it.

Drive Angry (2011)
6/10
A little mediocre but not bad
14 May 2018
As far as action movies go with a splash of satanic cults, this one is okay, but no masterpiece. The poster image is enough to give you the genral idea. Hot car, hot chick, hot mess of a backstory. Wrap a thirteen-in-a-dozen revenge tale with a occult twist to it, and we have a movie! Nick Cage himself being an actor that has movies that are eather great or just 'meh', this one hangs a bit in between. It's a character that he does well because it's just his thing; unbalanced, damaged and out for killing, we've seen that a dozen times before. The female lead, portrayed by Amber Heard is pretty shallow. Some boyfriend problems, and suddenly her boobs are along for the ride. That's het role in a nutshell.

The story is okay for it being what it is, and the coating is pretty nice. I personally enjoy a bit of occult underlining anytime and Drive Angry has a good enjoyable version of it. The action scenes are nothing we have not seen before but also, as far as they go, are amusing to watch. But if you like movies with not too much plot to distract you from the brainless onslought of violence - and there is nothing wrong with that from time to time - this is a perfect flick.

don't be offended, and it becomes a masterpice!
12 May 2018
Made an account just for this one because it needs to be said that all the negative reviews this thing is getting is highly unjustified in my humble opinion.

This movie gets a lot of hate, and i kinda see why, but i think the haters are whining. Yes, this movie can be offensive, it's the purpose of it and it does a damn good job at it! It portrayes two very different sides of life with all it's pro's and cons from BOTH SIDES. The movie doesn't pick a side at any time and overall, this is a very good display on the old right/wrong subject, because there IS NO right or wrong!

Viggo Mortensens acting is always spot-on, and this is no exception. He always portrays a character so incredibly well, and the role of confused but caring father suits him like a charm. All the kids do a great job too, especially considering the age of the youngest few.

I have to add; i've been a Christan for most of my life but i'm open minded to any healthy critisism. I hear people say this movie has too many attacks at Christianity, but what i see is good, critical viewpoint from all perspectives on the subject. Again, there is no bashing or overpraising either side, just a grounded view, and i have never seen a movie do it like Captain Fantastic! Really a fantastic movie that makes you use your brain! Don't watch if you are easily offended, but if you are open to it, you will enjoy every minute! Great soundtrack at the ending to!
