Review of Flirting

Flirting (1991)
9/10
A Rare, Intelligent, Realistic Gem...
29 March 2002
Well, it looks like another Aussie movie has managed to mix comedy and drama perfectly in a very intelligent script. The cover of this rental is deceiving, as it looks like light, teen pop fare, with Kidman being the main character. In truth, Kidmans part is not a focus in this film. But, she plays it perfectly. Kidmans character is that of a snooty popular girl who reminds me a ton of Kelly from 90210. She's not initially desirable, but as the movie grows you see her intelligence and humanity are quite developed beneath the cold image she projects. You can see what Kidman was like before she was famous, and it's pretty impressive. OK, enough of my obsession with Nicole. The real star of this is Thandie Newton. Someone who I'd only seen as Tom Cruise's girl on Mission Impossible 2. But, this role is completely different, and she's much younger. Her character is smart and charming. Well, I guess I should mention some plot. Basically, Thandie Newtons character has an unlikely crush on a boy from a boarding school across the lake. A good majority of the story revolves around them sneaking past strict headmasters in order to get to know each other. There is a very sensitive, and wonderful *first sex experience* scene, that is loving and innocent, and VERY real. And another interesting quirk is that Nicole Kidmans Character is named Nicola and Thandie Newtons character is named Thandiwe. This film has clever writing, some poetry, and philosophical influence. Best of all, the two kids come across as more intelligent and wise than any of the adults in the film. It really pokes fun at the unusual conventional thought of most people. Anyway, I recommend this film to anyone, 9 out of 10, and I've added it to my film collection.
