That confessional
jangreenhill126 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I've watched this episode twice now, and am still confused by how I feel. Aside from the fact it's extraordinary, the confessional monologue touched a nerve that I'd rather not spend much time exploring. I suppose it's discomfort, both because Fleabag is a mirror that reflects all the bits about myself I don't particilarly like, and because situationally it's so awkward! I guess that's what makes this art.

Bravo PWB, even if the next two episodes are pale in comparison, episode 4 is a televisual triumph. I'm still a little freaked by my reaction to it. Why did that kiss bother me so much, (I'm an atheist) and why do I really just want someone to tell me what to do?! Perhaps I'm not actually a feminist after all.

I can't think of anything better than this. Writing, acting, even lighting. The fourth wall bit. The confessional. Bravo.

Flashbacks and Flashforwards

This is a really interesting episode. Using Fleabag's mother's funeral in flashback, we get to see where things fall. We then see the incredible pressure on the Priest, resisting temptation. We get to see how really fragile Fleabag is. She is constantly having to evaluate her feelings.

The Show Just Keeps Doing Great

I feel like I write the same thing for most of the episodes. The show is really funny and sometimes becomes like a drama. The dialogues are sharp and cleverly written. Phoebe is so charming and the show is never boring and easy to binge with interesting characters. The editing and the music, especially in this episode, are really good. Fleabag's monologue(confession) is exceptionally written. Phoebe is both exceptional writer and actor. The show's soul is her.

Answer to the question in the review "Anachronism"

The Priest doesn't know Dad and Godmother very well, they're not members of his parish. He met them quite recently through Claire and Martin, because Jake is a member of the church's little orchestra.

Fantastic episode, btw. An unexpected and touching glimpse of Fleabag's heart.

Confess

Warning: Spoilers
Probably one of the best episodes in the series for me.

Firstly, hilarious. The humor in this is right up my alley and I think this second season is even more funny than the first. At times, the editing is so quick and the joke delivery as well that I feel I may need to give this season alone a second viewing just to make sure I didn't miss any of them. I'm sure some will hate that as much as I love it.

Secondly, what a great character piece this episode alone is. I feel like if someone in the house wandered over while now as watching this, having seen nothing up to this point, they would probably be very interested in what's going on and what the heck is going to happen next. We learn so much about our protagonist through her flashbacks and time spent with a Priest.

I really like what Bridge is doing with that relationship in particular, and him seeing her fourth-wall breaks is kind of ingenious. I'm anxious and excited to see where THAT goes by the end of the show.

And all of her scenes she shared privately with her dad are exceptional. All of them. I loved their talk here in the funeral flashback. Very, very touching and sad.

And then the episode ends with a bit of twist I didn't see coming. Just when she FINALLY lets (almost) everything out, the Priest falls under temptation for probably the first time in years, only to back out. I don't blame her for looking as confounded and angry as she did at the end.

The writing for this series is amazing and I haven't even finished it yet. Bridge's writing is great, but her acting is legitimately powerful. I love her jokes and comedic timing, but her few very serious scenes have also been exceptional.

So yeah, exceptional.

Grief clearly agrees with you

Fleabag reflects on her mother's funeral and gets closer to the Priest.

There is plenty great humour in numerous moments, but this is probably the most intensely emotional episode since the final episode of series 1.

It all builds to a scene between Fleabag and the Priest that is incredibly well performed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge and for me is reminiscent of a great scene between Carmela and Father Phil in The Sopranos, only the context for these two characters is very different. All her scenes with Andrew Scott are strong as ever.

The running joke about her appearance at the funeral is great and all the scenes involving Olivia Coleman's character are superb.

Anacronism

I'd have given this episode 10* like I would all the other episodes except for one thing that niggles. In the cafe The Priest asks what Fleabag's Step mother to be is like. But Fleabag met the priest at the engagement party of her godmother to her Dad. It seemed like they knew each other well. Or am I missing something?

Episode 2.4
Prismark1017 June 2019
There was a lot that came together between Fleabag and the Priest in this episode.

I also liked the flashbacks to Fleabag's mother's funeral and how the Godmother made an immediate play for Fleabag's dad.

It all came down the confessional. Fleabag almost admits to everything to the Priest.

For the first time you sense some kind of inner calm in Fleabag. That she has internalised her thoughts, feeling and put them in some sense of order. Maybe that is what the Priest has brought to her.

In confession

Warning: Spoilers
This show is amazing, let's get that out of the way up front. Why only a five star review? The confession to the priest is some of the best acting I've ever seen. It was a quiet moment in the show we were there with her, feeling that pain. And just when she is about to receive genuine help in the form of a prayer and perhaps feel just a bit better, she starts making out with the priest. Why did it have to resolve to that? It did not sit right with me. Not saying she has to get all religious now, but c'mon. Afterward, she's worse than when she went in. Since I care about the character, I feel worse too.
