In 2020 – for the first time in seven years – the Best Supporting Actress Oscar category saw a lone nomination, meaning that a film was recognized there and nowhere else. This achievement is attributed to Kathy Bates (“Richard Jewell”), who competed for no major precursors except the Golden Globe but still managed to bump Critics Choice, SAG, and Globe nominee Jennifer Lopez (“Hustlers”). Perhaps unsurprisingly given the length of the streak she broke, there has yet to be a lone contender in any of her category’s subsequent lineups.
Since the introduction of the two gendered supporting Oscars in 1937, there have been 57 female lone nominees and 54 male ones, with over half of the entrants on the former roster having been added before 1977. The one who directly preceded Bates was Helen Hunt, whose inclusion in her lineup was much more heavily predicted. Coincidentally, both women had the perceived advantage of being former Best Actress champions,...

At its most basic, possession horror exploits the primal fear of losing control over your own person, usually due to a demonic entity. Victims in a possession movie are rendered mere passengers in their bodies as a sinister force takes over and destroys them from the inside. That potent combination of body horror and a complete lack of free will makes for inherently terrifying and fertile ground for exploration. While possession horror is often tied to biblical battles of good versus evil, that’s not always the case.
This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to demonic possession horror titles that leave conventional depictions of faith and exorcisms behind for new terrain and metaphors.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.

Possession horror tends to take the possession seriously, opting for full-throttle scares and intense emotional or faith-related stakes.

If you’ve ever wanted a long-belated sequel to Throw Momma From the Train, Danny DeVito and Billy Crystal have you covered.
While speaking with GQ, Danny DeVito was asked if there was anything in his career he wanted to revisit. Surprisingly, DeVito mentioned that he’s been looking at reuniting with Billy Crystal for a Throw Momma From the Train sequel titled, you guessed it, Throw Papa From the Train. “Billy [Crystal] and I want to work together again,” DeVito said. “We were looking at possibly doing Throw Papa From the Train.” Crystal’s representative confirmed the news to Entertainment Weekly. “It’s true,” the rep said. “They’re still working on it.“
Throw Momma From the Train starred Billy Crystal as Larry, an author with a cruel ex-wife, Margaret (Kate Mulgrew), who teaches a writing workshop where Owen (Danny DeVito), one of his students, is fed up with his...

In this weird world of spinoffs and sequels, you can never say never to the possibility of a legacy sequel, no matter how unlikely it seems. Some of them are ill-advised, but sometimes we get the chance to return to some great creative ground that just didn't get the chance for a sequel during its era for whatever reason. Movies from the 1980s and 1990s that have found cult status have the potential to find an even bigger audience with a legacy sequel, and as long as the original stars are interested, it can happen! That seems to be the case for "Throw Momma From the Train," the 1987 dark comedy directed by Danny DeVito and starring DeVito and Billy Crystal. The movie follows an author named Larry (Crystal) and one of his writing students, Owen (DeVito), after they become entangled in a murder plot directly inspired by Alfred Hitchcock's "Strangers on a Train.

Easing into the first few minutes of Brooklyn 45, one gets a feeling of a slower pace of life. Not just for the times it is set in but also in the manner in which the story unfolds stylistically as well as narratively. This is a film that unpacks slowly and takes its time to say what it wants to say. Set in post-war America, it is about a group of veterans who meet for a reunion at their friend’s place, who is grieving his wife’s premature passing.
The dramatis personae of the story are Clive, the recently widowed Colonel played by Larry Fessenden; Major Paul Di Franco, played by Ezra Buzzington, who is a tough, no-nonsense soldier for whom the war never ended; and Jeremy Holm as Archie, a soldier who has a reputation for being courageous and is respected by the squad. He is currently defending...

When Steve Spielberg’s The Goonies set sail in 1985, the world was unaware of the cast’s lasting appeal and power in the film industry. Featuring Hollywood legends like Josh Brolin, Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Martha Plimpton, and Ke Huy Quan, The Goonies feels like a rare Hollywood treasure any pioneering filmmaker would endure boobytraps to have created.
In today’s video, we’ll explore The Goonies cast, including the fascinating twists and career moves of Feldman, Kerri Green, Jeff Cohen, Joe Pantoliano, Robert Davi, and Anne Ramsey. Regardless of where they ended up, The Goonies cast helped create one of Hollywood’s most iconic coming-of-age adventures to explore the silver screen. The Goonies’ legacy and influence on films that follow in its footsteps cannot be understated. Many filmmakers cite the nostalgic thrill ride as inspiration for The Monster Squad, Stranger Things, Super 8, It, and many more.

When the "Scream VI" trailer debuted a month ago, slasher flick purists were taken aback by Ghostface's use of a shotgun in the opening bit. This is a slasher flick. Slashers... slash, right?
If you're at all familiar with the genre, you know that the best slasher movies get inventive with their kills. Jason Voorhees famously used a speargun to brilliant 3D effect in "Friday the 13th Part III," Samantha exploded Anne Ramsey's head with a basketball in "Deadly Friend," and pyramid sinkers figure prominently in Buddy Cooper's magnificent "The Mutilator."
The one method of murder that tends to be frowned upon in slasher flicks is gunplay. Sure, antagonists who are closely associated with a certain implement of dispatch have to call an audible every now and then, but firearms are just, in the Grand Guignol tradition, gauche. Unless you're soaring off the rails, you owe it to...

The Goonies blend of adventure and horror helped set the tone for the recent adaptation of Stephen King's It.
This article comes from Den of Geek UK.
The recent movie adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, It was a massive critical and commercial success The book had already provided the source material for one production that scared the lights out of a generation – who can forget Tim Curry’s take on Pennywise the clown? – and the new film successfully repeated the trick, so much so that clowns reported a decline in business.
It was when Mark Kermode reviewed the film on the Kermode & Mayo Film Review program, though, that he described the new It movie not as a horror, but an adventure horror. And the inevitable line was drawn back to The Goonies. The overlaps are clear. A group of young misfits find themselves in an adventure filled with peril,...

There are few movies that tap into what it is to be a child, but The Goonies captures it perfectly. It may be adventurous and far-fetched, but that is the adventures we had when we were young. The Goonies: 30th Anniversary Collector’s Edition blu-ray celebrates the undying love that people have for the movie that never seems to age (even if the actors do).

From thrillers to sci-fi to horror, here's our pick of 20 films from 1986 that surely deserve a bit more love...
A fascinating year for film, 1986. It was a time when a glossy, expensive movie about handsome men in planes could dominate the box-office, sure (that would be Top Gun). But it was also a year when Oliver Stone went off with just $6m and came back with Platoon, one of the biggest hits of the year both financially and in terms of accolades. It was also a period when the British movie industry was briefly back on its feet, resulting in a new golden age of great films - one or two of them are even on this list.
As ever, there were certain films that, despite their entertainment value or genuine brilliance in terms of movie making, somehow managed to slip through the net. So to redress the balance a little,...

For some of the oldsters out there they may recall the 1973 Gamble & Huff-produced R&B hit single “I’ll Always Love My Mama” by the musical group The Intruders. This musical anthem was certainly a lyrical tribute to caring mothers and how their sacrifices shaped our childhood and adulthood. This finger-snapping song definitely captured the spirit of motherly guidance.
Naturally film has had its share of depicting motherhood over the decades. In fact, mothers of all types are presented before our eyes in packages of being nurturing, notorious, nutty, naive and nonsensical. However, there is something so special about the mother-son relationship that rivals the father-daughter dynamic. We have our share of proud Mama’s boys out there roaming about in society.

According to director Richard Donner- the man who brought us Superman: The Movie, the Lethal Weapon series, The Omen, and- of course- The Goonies- a sequel to the 1985 classic in the works. Of course, he can probably form a tag team with Dan Aykroyd, because both have had a penchant for drumming up interest for sequels to Goonies and Ghostbusters, respectively, for many years now. It was recently announced Akyroyd’s pipe dream will become a reality soon, and now Donner seems dead serious about his Goonies sequel.
Unprovoked, and unannounced, while being hounded by a TMZ camera man, he volunteered the following information:
He was asked if he’d ever make a comic book movie- since he’s the man that pioneered the genre back in 1978- and he bluntly said, “If you call ‘Goonies’ a comic book.” When the photographer acts surprised, Donner- again- blankly states,...

Filmmaker Richard Donner has dropped something of a bombshell with news that he's making a sequel to his classic 1985 adventure film "The Goonies".
TMZ was with Donner in person when he confirmed they are doing a sequel. Asked if any of the original film's stars are coming back, he said "hopefully all of them".
Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman, Martha Plimpton, Jonathan Ke Quan, Kerri Green, Jeff Cohen, Robert Davi and Joe Pantoliano starred in the original about a group of kids set out on an adventure in search of pirate treasure that could save their homes from foreclosure.
Two of the original cast members, Anne Ramsey (Mama Fratelli) and John Matuszak (Sloth) have since passed away. Brolin, Astin, Plimpton, Davi and Pantoliano are all still busy working actors to this day. Green only occasionally acts and now produces films as well, Cohen has become an entertainment lawyer, and...

The 2014 Academy Awards are right around the corner, and we couldn't help but notice that there's not one, but two women nominated for playing our favorite kind of Oscar–nominated role: the brash, tough-talking older matriarch, a role we affectionately call "the Mema," after Michael "The Angry Ginger" Kittrell's grandmother from Reelz's reality series Hollywood Hillbillies. Of course, a "Mema" isn't nominated every year, but with Jane Squibb from Nebraska and Meryl Streep from August: Osage County both being nominated in a "Mema" role, we thought we'd share some of our favorites "Mema" nominations in advance of this weekend's telecast.

Many horror movie killers have a signature weapon (such as Freddy Krueger's razorblade gloves, Michael Myers' butcher knife, Jason Voorhees' machete, and so on), while other deadly implements are simply picked up in the heat of the moment... which leads to some of cinema's most inspired moments of mayhem. We tend to stand up and take notice when characters get creative with their weaponry, so we decided to spotlight ten of the most unconventional (or just plain bizarre) weapon choices from genre movies and television. Basketball (Deadly Friend) I doubt if anyone thought a basketball could double as a weapon prior to seeing this Wes Craven film, but now it’s impossible to deny that sporting goods are Satan’s playthings. Elvira Parker’s (Anne Ramsey) head literally explodes when the "improved" Samantha (Kristy Swanson) uses her newfound super-strength to lob a basketball at her head with the force of an industrial-strength catapult.

Danny DeVito, who voiced the title character in The Lorax, will direct the indie comedy Honeymoon with Dad. It's about a Cpa who is left at the altar and goes on his honeymoon trip with his big personality dad, whom he hasn't seen in a long time. DeVito, who also produced and directed the film Matilda, starred in the dark comedy Throw Momma From the Train - which is about a guy on a trip with his nagging mother who won't let him live his life and so he plots to push his mother (Anne Ramsey who was the bad guy's mom in The Goonies) off the train. It sounds awful but it's actually pretty funny. Hopefully, Honeymoon with Dad is equally entertaining!
DeVito currently stars in the FX series "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" and will make the movie while on hiatus.

But here at NextMovie, we're all about the bad girls. We love a lady who isn't afraid to embrace her nasty side in order to get what she wants.
In honor of "Savages" and Salma Hayek's role as a brutal drug cartel leader, we've gathered up the coolest and cruelest women to grace the silver screen. We're a little worried about ranking them, because if there's one thing we know about these vicious villainesses, it's that they don't like competition. But we did. Now, you read. We'll run.
15. Rebecca Romijn as Mystique in the 'X-Men' Movies (2000-06)
Mystique's level of menace shifts with every new "X-Men" installment.

Hey youuuuuuu guys!"The Goonies" came out 27 years ago this month -- and today, one of the film's stars celebrates his 59th birthday. As one of the Fratelli Brothers, b-day boy Robert Davi terrorized the title characters on their hunt for One-Eyed Willie's long lost treasure.Since the 1985 flick, Davi played a Bond villain in "License to Kill," appeared in cult classic "Showgirls" and starred on "Profiler." Davi, who sang opera in "Goonies," even released an album of Frank Sinatra covers recently and is currently on tour.Unfortunately Anne Ramsey ("Mama Fratelli") passed away from cancer in 1988 -- and former NFL star John Matuszak ("Sloth") died the following year. But what do Robert and the rest of the cast look like today? Witches of Eastwick 25th anniversary week ends this weekend. I intended to do much more but we'll see what little can be conjured still.
Cherries, Oatmeal, Satan and her weak husband just make her sick!
Film Experience Trivia: Veronica Cartwright was the star of the very first episode of Craig's "Take Three" series right here (well, at the old location) in 2010. He spotlighted her work in three genre pieces (Alien in which she was originally cast as Ripley (!!!) , Invasion of the Body Snatchers and The Witches of Eastwick) concluding that she is the sci-fi-horror scream queen. On Witches:
Cartwright's skill at creating profoundly memorable characters is none more evident than in Witches: you see the very bile rise up in Felicia's face; she vehemently means every word in her religious rants, summoning up as she does some kind of wicked, wrathful acting goddess. With cherry-scented vomit (or even hospital oatmeal) smeared ungainly across her mouth,...

Don't keep mum – help us find cinema's best onscreen mothers
This week's Clip Joint is by writer Nia Jones – follow her on Twitter at @niaserenwib.
Is there anything quite like a mother's love? We are constantly reminded that being a mother requires much more than biology. Teenage Pregnancy has been covered on Clip joint before, but there is nothing more universal than the topic of motherhood. What it means to be a "good" or "bad" mother has been portrayed on screen using a plethora of different guises; over the years, celluloid has provided a plentiful source for diverse and superbly acted depictions of the maternal experience.
1. Chris MacNeil, The Exorcist
Ellen Burstyn's performance is a heart-wrenching and believable portrayal of a woman pushed to emotional and physical despair. After witnessing her daughter Regan's demonic transformation and horrific self-mutilation, agnostic Chris MacNeil is driven beyond her own logical reasoning to consult Father Damien Karras,...

Decapitations have been a horror movie staple for decades. To celebrate this fact, here’s Phil’s list of cinema’s finest choppings, loppings and beheadings…
In onscreen depictions of violence or combat, when it comes to delivering a coup de grace, nothing is quite so effective or final as a decapitation. It’s the death stroke that can illicit applause, gasps, cheers, screams, or make you feel a bit queasy, but no matter what the effect, it seems that you never have to wait too long for another one to come along in the crazy, wacky, world of on-screen carnage.
However, as this list shows, there’s more than one way to skin a cat, and movie beheadings have proved endlessly inventive, a fact that explains why something as mundane and straightforward as a guillotine will find no place in this top 10. This list is an attempt to celebrate the most shocking,...

Tomorrow, J.J. Abrams reaches back to a simpler time and ruins the lives of yet another group of precocious children with Super 8. He hearkens back to a simpler time, when kids cruised around to the accompaniment of flapping baseball cards in the spokes of their Schwinns and government-based aliens escaped and terrorized the countryside, only to possibly be thwarted by a rag-tag bunch of youngsters and their camera equipment. (I haven't seen the movie yet, I'm just speculating.)
The gang of children battling some sort of devious childhood menace -- be that hoods who may or may not be responsible for a dead body up to and including invasion by Russian military forces -- is a popular one in cinema. Increasing in severity, I've listed 8 of some of my favorite films about groups of innocent children who are forced to face demons and how they came out either unscathed or majestically scathed.

For every "good" onscreen mom, who made chicken soup and gave cute haircuts, there's a not-so-good one, who may have put a little arsenic in that soup or used those scissors to cut, um, other things.
On this Mother's Days, here's a look at those cinematic moms who aren't necessarily picture-perfect.

It's Mother's Day in the UK this Sunday, traditionally a day when we celebrate that pal of our cradle days, by urging her to put her feet up, open a bottle of Blue Nun and enjoy the heady aroma of the flowers we've hastily procured from the Bp garage round the corner. It's a day for reminding ourselves of what we too often take for granted and appreciating all that those silver-haired angels have ever done for us.
However, it's a double edged sword is motherhood, and if the movies have taught us anything about family and relationships, it's that for every Mrs Gump dishing out chocolates, there's a Mrs Voorhees dishing out death.
So, join me now as I take a look at this other set of women, those mad, bad...

10. Rambo (2008) –50-Cal Machine Gun Attack
Browning M2 machine guns have been around since the 1930s, so what makes this scene so ridiculous and even funny? Try using said monster gun on a terrorist sitting five feet away. The result is an explosion of glass, guts, and metal in the front seat of a jeep. Rambo then proceeds to cut a dozen guys clean in half with the 50-caliber machine gun. The carnage takes on absurd heights throughout the entire movie (bare-handed throat rip!) but this scene is the ultimate representation of overkill – literally.
9. Hard Ticket to Hawaii (1987) – Skater’s Death
Guys who skateboard on their hands for no reason kinda deserve to die. Actually, calling yourself “Skater” is reason enough to die. So luckily for us, this idiot encounters a pair of muscleheads who happen to be toting a multi-barreled bazooka. Then again, these dudes seem to be invulnerable to a bullet in the chest,...

The Goonies 25th Anniversary Edition (Blu-Ray)Warner Home Entertainment1985/Rated PG/114 Min.List Price $49.98 – Available NowTwenty-five years is one quarter of a century but depending on the perception of the individual it can seem like a short time. For me 1985 feels like yesterday. You might already be aware of my musings about what a great summer that year had for movies and The Goonies is a film that feels like its always been a part of my life. I honestly can't remember how I first heard of it. Perhaps it was through word of mouth, a TV spot or your typical extra large poster you see in your subway station. It didn't matter whether or not the movie was good or even what it was about. The hook for that film and many others like it came from three simple words: Steven Spielberg Presents. Following the success of E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial,...

"Goonies Never Say Die" Motto Now Destroyed For The Ages, But Broadway Could Beckon 1985 is a good year. It gave us "Back To The Future," "The Breakfast Club" and another mainstream '80s pop film classic, Richard Donner's "The Goonies." Much like Robert Zemeckis' picture (the number one domestic grossing picture that year), currently celebrating its 25th anniversary with a new Blu-Ray/DVD disc, ("The Goonies" was the ninth highest domestic grossing film that year). The summer of 1985. Has it really been twenty-five years. Wow! I don't really feel old, but its amazing that era was so long ago and yet the memories feel like yesterday. I was ten going on eleven and enjoying my summer break. Though my parents wouldn't let me leave my neighborhood with my friends, they always took me to the cinema as often as they could, which is where my love of movies comes from. I consider myself fortunate to have shared some great movie moments with my family and with my parents coming to town to visit me this summer, we hope to have some more.Hollywood still makes great movies today, but the eighties were a time when most of the movies you saw were good. At least they seemed to be good at that early age. Time can often be cruel and with maturity comes the revelation...

Some of the best female movie roles are mothers -- especially the bad ones. We're talking about moms who don't have a single nurturing bone in their bodies, who take their personal woes out on their offspring, and who do generally cracked-up things that make Peg Bundy look like Mother Teresa. In honor of Mother's Day, here's a look at ten psycho movie moms who should definitely be blacklisted by 1-800-flowers.10. Kathleen Cleary (Jane Seymour), Wedding CrashersCleary has no qualms about seducing men half her age, while her husband and kids are in the same room. It's funny to watch, but her aggressive advances scare the objects of her affections (Owen Wilson, in this case). We'd be scared, too, if someone cornered us in a bedroom, bared her naughty parts, and then called us a pervert. Her predatory nature doesn't necessarily make her a bad mom, though, so she ranks low on the list.

So instead of celebrating those wonderful onscreen moms, let's hear it for the moms who aren't so loving, can be horribly manipulative, or are even downright homicidal -- the celluloid mothers we love to hate.

Marley was dead, but he’s certainly the Energizer Bunny of holiday fantasy. He just keeps coming back, dragging along clanging chains and enormous lockboxes, always ready to haunt his former business partner Ebenezer Scrooge (It’s for Scrooge’s own good! What does Marley get out of it? Peace of mind?). And here he is doing it again in theaters now as fantasy filmmaker Robert Zemeckis unveils a Performance Capture-cg animated version of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol with Jim Carrey as Scrooge and all three holiday Ghosts. See my review here.
Dickens originally wrote the story in 1843, and given all the various stage, radio, film and TV versions of it since then (both official and ripoff), it’s certainly one of the most adapted tales ever. Even Dickens adapted it, tailoring a one-man version which he read on stage in London engagements and on tour (including here in...

There is nothing quite like a killer woman. Not “killer” as in “awesome,” and I don’t mean some femme fatale either. I mean ladies who flat out kill. The killer woman is an automatic plus for almost any thriller or horror movie, a story figure with more sex appeal than a male murderer. Call me sexist, but seriously: would you rather get an eyeful of Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lechter or Megan Fox as Jennifer Check in “Jennifer’s Body”? Exactly.
Not having seen “Jennifer’s Body,” I can’t say how Fox's character measures up in cinema’s hall of killer chick fame. Do her demonic deeds measure up with Stephen King’s prodigal daughter Carrie? Is she as blood thirsty in her pursuit of eating high school boys as Natasha Henstridge in “Species”? The trailers just don’t tell me enough to know for sure!

This Sunday is Mother’s Day, and in honor of this spectacular day for hardworking moms everywhere, we here at Fandango put up a list of the sexiest and scariest movie moms in contemporary cinema (ie: last thirty years) that was entirely created by you. And while I agree with some of your choices (Faye Dunaway and Anne Ramsey were truly scary moms, while Angelina Jolie and Diane Lane made for two ultra sexy moms), there are some I felt deserved a little extra attention. That said, here are my favorite movie moms from the past 30 years (in no particular order):1. Linda Hamilton (Terminator, Terminator 2: Judgment Day) – I don’t know how she did it, but somehow Linda Hamilton proved to be sexy, scary and one of the toughest gals to every grace the silver screen...

I've never been a big fan of Mother's Day only because my birthday is May 9th and it sometimes falls either on Mom's Day or the day before (like this year). And since I'm an egotistical bastard who likes to have an entire day dedicated to me and my awesomeness, having to share that day with someone else is a total drag. But we love our moms, and without them none of us would have ever been born. So, as is customary with this time of year, we're beginning to see movie-related mom lists pop up online -- and over at Fandango they asked 3,500 readers to cast their votes for both the sexiest movie mom and scariest movie mom in contemporary cinema (meaning within the past 30 years).
Yes, it freaks me out that thirty years back brings us only to 1979, but the sad fact remains that a lot of today's...
