As we start gearing up for the Holiday Shopping Season, there are a new batch of home media releases arriving this week, and a few of those titles might feel right at home on your wish list this year. Heathers, a personal favorite of mine is getting the Steelbook treatment this Tuesday, courtesy of Rlje Films, and in terms of recent horror releases, both 47 Meters Down: Uncaged and Bliss are both hitting Blu-ray and DVD as well.
Scream Factory is showing some love to Stacey Keach and Road Games (1981) this week, and for those of you who enjoy your sibling survival stories with a bit of a nasty twist to them, Arrow Video has put together a special edition release of Flowers in the Attic.
Other Blu and DVD films coming home on November 12th include Wicked World, The Attic, Polaroid, Darkslide, Small Town Killers, and Southern Chillers.

Flowers In The Attic will be available on Blu-ray November 12th From Arrow Video
When her husband dies in a tragic accident, widow Corrine Dollanganger takes her four children to the ancestral family home she fled before they were born. Locked away in the attic by their tyrannical grandmother, it falls to older brother and sister Chris and Cathy to care for their younger siblings. But with their mother growing increasingly distant and erratic and a mysterious sickness taking hold, will any of the Dollanganger children survive to escape the clutches of the house s cruel matriarch?
Originally published in 1979, Vc Andrews novel Flowers in the Attic was a smash hit, spawning four sequels and going on to sell over 40 million copies worldwide. With undercurrents of incest and child abuse and a haunting score by Christopher Young (Hellraiser), Flowers in the Attic is a dark and chilling Gothic suspense thriller in the classic tradition.

When it was announced that Flowers in the Attic was lined up for its UK Blu-ray debut, it occurred to me that I had no real memory of my one and only dip into writer-director Jeffrey Bloom’s adaptation of the controversial, best-selling Virginia (V.C.) Andrews novel – which I guess would have been right back upon its initial release in 1987. Interest to revisit it duly piqued, my anticipation was tempered a tad by the sense that being unable to remember it had surely to be indicative that it wasn’t actually very good. Although it still amuses me that a guy named Bloom wrote and directed a film with Flowers in the title, regrettably my reservations proved well founded. It really is rather awful. There be spoilers ahead!

Forced to live together in a confined space and depending on each other for survival, the Dollanganger siblings from 1987’s Flowers in the Attic have always reminded me of the kids from The Boxcar Children book series I grew up reading, although instead of solving mysteries on fun adventures, they were busy dealing with a scissors-wielding grandma, a murderous mother, and some intense incestual feelings—not exactly the type of material you’d find next to Gertrude Chandler Warner’s books in the library.
Published in 1979 and featuring evil parental figures, inter-family violence, and sibling incest, V.C. Andrews’ Flowers in the Attic was a sought-after page-turner for readers drawn to its controversial elements, and its viability in the bookstores paved its way to the cinemas in the mid-’80s. Women are not natural born killers. That’s the commonly held belief, supported by crime statistics that show that 93% of all murders are committed by men. But, what about that 7% of women that do kill, the ones responsible for 16,000 murders a year? Are women killers different, somehow, than other women, or are they just regular women driven to acts of insanity by money, revenge or passion? Examining the motivations and methodologies of women killers is what makes our crime series Snapped (weekdays at 6pm Et/3pm Pt) so wickedly fascinating.
As in real life, violent female characters comprise only a small percentage of the perpetrators of violence depicted on the big screen, but the truly terrifying ones make a lasting impression on us. Here's our rundown of the most infamous female characters in cinema, women that snapped and resorted to violence and even murder to achieve their goals.

If you are at all familiar with V.C. Andrews’ Dollanganger stories, you know that the author’s wildly popular five-book series are basically readily consumable insanity. Andrews’ sensibilities ran towards the “Gothic” and the “family saga,” and that’s never been clearer than in her wackadoo Dollanganger series, which doesn’t require reading for people to have familiarity with it. Let’s put it this way – do you remember a creepy film from your childhood in which Kristy Swanson and her siblings were locked in an attic by their evil grandmother and weak-willed mother and she eventually banged her brother in said attic? Yup, you’ve got familiarity with Flowers in the Attic, which means you’ve got familiarity with Andrews and the Dollangangers and now you quite keenly realize just what type of “family saga” Andrews liked to write about. Despite her prolific and bestselling writing career, only two Andrews books have ever been brought to...

Lifetime's got a new adaptation of V.C. Andrews' 1979 gothic novel "Flowers in the Attic" in the works, and the first trailer is below. The book, which was previous adapted into a 1987 movie starring Kristy Swanson and Victoria Tennant, tells the story of the Dollanganger siblings who, after losing their father in a car crash, are forced to live in darkness in their abusive grandmother's attic as they grapple with their family's soul-shattering past and present. The trailer, which is set to a tense cover of Guns N' Roses' "Sweet Child O' Mine," opens with the words "The Book You Were Forbidden To Read," a reference to the fact that since its publication "Flowers in the Attic" has attracted widespread controversy for its depictions of abuse and incest. Lifetime's version does have one hell of a cast -- it stars Ellen Burstyn as the grandmother, "Mad Men" actress Kiernan Shipka...

Ask pretty much anyone who was a teenager in 1980, and they’ll tell you that the V.C. Andrews novel Flowers In The Attic was that year’s must-read. And ask any of those same devotees about the highly-anticipated, universally despised 1987 big screen version of the tale, and… well, settle in, because they’ll have a lot to say. So the stakes are high where Lifetime’s upcoming take on the tale — set to air in January — is concerned. Done right, the network can expect a big audience who will eagerly anticipate them adapting the book’s sequels and other Andrews projects. So as longtime fans of the gothic chiller, what advice do we have? So glad you asked!
Keep It In The Family. It may be a taboo topic, but you simply can’t do this story and ignore — as the movie did — the incest factor. It is at the...

The Lifetime network is planning to produce a telemovie adaptation of V.C. Andrews' infamous novel "Flowers in the Attic". Heather Graham has signed on to play Corrine, while Ellen Burstyn will play Olivia in this new version.
The story follows a recently widowed woman named Corrine who seeks refuge with her cruel mother Olivia at her sizeable Virginia mansion.
Olivia agrees, on the condition Corrine's four children are to be kept hidden away in the attic until Olivia's husband dies and Corrine can inherit the family's estate.

V.C. Andrews' controversial bestselling novel, "Flowers in the Attic," is getting the Lifetime treatment with an upcoming TV movie adaptation in the works.
Deadline reports that the cable network has given the greenlight to the film, with Heather Graham and Ellen Burstyn attached to star. "Flowers in the Attic" tells the gothic story of four siblings, two boys and two girls, who, after their father's death, are removed from their former lives and subjected to cruel abuse, both physical and emotional.
Abandoned by their mother, Corrine (Graham), the children are forced to live in the attic of their grandparents' mansion, where they form a unsettling family unit of their own. The oldest boy and girl, Chris and Cathy, come of age both physically and emotionally while acting as makeshift parents for younger twin siblings Cory and Carrie, all while trying to survive and escape. Kiss Me Deadly (Criterion) Robert Aldrich’s 1955 reinvention of the film noir detective story is one of cinema’s great genre mash-ups: part hardboiled noir; part cold war paranoid thriller; and part science- fiction. Ralph Meeker plays Mickey Spillane’s fascist detective Mike Hammer as a narcissistic simian thug, a sadist who would rather smash a suspect’s fingers than make love to the bevvy of beautiful dames that cross his path. In fact, the only time you see a smile cross Meeker’s sneering mug is when he’s doling out pain, with a vengeance. When a terrified young woman (Cloris Leachman, film debut) literally crossed Hammer’s path one night, and later turns up dead, he vows to get to the bottom of her brutal demise. One of the most influential films ever made, and perhaps the most-cited film by the architects...

Welcome to the first in what I'm planning will be a year-long series of weekly reviews for movies that were released in 1981. Before I begin with my review, I should note that while it is my intention to review each movie as close to the thirtieth anniversary of its release as possible, finding a reliable release date can be problematic. It can also be difficult to track down specific movies. From time to time I'll be a little off, but I'll do my best to make a note of it. Sometimes this will be accidental, and sometimes it will be by design. There will be occasions where two of the movies released one weekend are more interesting to me than anything released the next weekend. In cases such as those, I'll go with what looks the most interesting to me. I'll also be looking to the boards for the occasional suggestion.

(Tanna Frederick in Henry Jaglom's "Just 45 Minutes From Broadway," above, with David Garver.)
By Terry Keefe
The manner in which Iowa native Tanna Frederick received her break as an actress has sort of become a independent filmmaking legend, but it bears repeating, as a lesson in the type of chutzpah required to get anywhere in the film business. After a few years of struggling in the audition trenches of Hollywood, Frederick was told by a fellow actor that filmmaker Henry Jaglom often responded to fan letters. Frederick proceeded to write a copious letter to Jaglom, praising the merits of his 1997 film Deja Vu…which she had never actually seen. Nonetheless, a correspondence between Frederick and Jaglom began, and eventually, Jaglom gave the actress permission to do a stage production of his 1971 film debut, A Safe Place, the cinematic version of which starred Jack Nicholson, Orson Welles, and Tuesday Weld.

Director Harold Becker.
Digging up The Onion Field with Harold Becker
by Jon Zelazny
On January 27th, 2010, Gregory Ulus Powell went before a parole board at The Men’s Colony in San Luis Obispo, California. Powell has been serving a suspended death sentence for the 1963 kidnapping of Lapd officers Ian Campbell and Karl Hettinger, and the murder of Campbell.
The crime was the subject of L.A. cop-turned-author Joseph Wambaugh’s 1974 non-fiction bestseller, The Onion Field. Five years later the movie appeared, directed by Bronx native Harold Becker, who went on to popular hits like Taps (1981), Sea of Love (1989) and Malice (1993).
With Greg Powell back in the news, I met with Becker at his office in Beverly Hills.
Harold Becker: The Onion Field was my big break. I had made one feature film in England, The Ragman’s Daughter (1972). It was well received over there, but didn’t really cut through here.
