Shortlists have been revealed for the music categories for the 95th Academy Awards, and 15 semifinalists each for the Best Original Score and Best Original Song categories will compete for nominations that will be announced on Jan. 24, 2023.
As expected, the song category shortlist is chock-full of pop superstars such as Taylor Swift, The Weeknd, Lady Gaga, Rihanna and Selena Gomez among the 15; however, last year’s Best Original Song victors Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell did not make the cut for their contribution of “Nobody Like U” to Pixar’s “Turning Red.”

Rita Wilson knew she wanted to bring the two Latino characters, played by Manuel Garcia Rulfo and Mariana Trevino, from “A Man Called Otto” into her song “Till You’re Home.” She fell in love with the vocals of Sebastián Yatra, who sang the Oscar-nominated “Dos Oruguitas” from Disney’s “Encanto” (2021). He had one day off and happened to be in Los Angeles, giving him one day to record the track. “We were incredibly lucky that he said yes,” says Wilson.
The actor, producer, singer and songwriter will enter the awards conversation for best original song for the upcoming Sony Pictures feature film, which stars her husband, Tom Hanks, and is directed by Marc Forster.
The track marks Wilson’s third eligible original song, which began with “Even More Mine” from “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2” (2016) and “Everybody Cries” from “The Outpost” (2020), but this isn’t her first dabbles in the music world.

Exclusive: CSI: Vegas has set its medical examiner team. Sara Amini (Future Man) and Joel Johnstone (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) are set for recurring roles in the second season of CBS’ sequel to the groundbreaking 2000 series.
Amini will recur as Sonya, a regimented, methodical, and passionate head Medical Examiner. Johnstone will play Jack, Sonya’s intelligent, curious, and optimistic older brother and the assistant Medical Examiner.
Season 1 opened a new chapter in Las Vegas – the city where it all began, introducing a serialized storytelling to the classic crime procedural drama. Wallace Langham has signed on to the cast of “Perry Mason” Season 2 at HBO.
Langham joins a cast that includes returning series star Matthew Rhys as well as Juliet Rylance, Chris Chalk, Diarra Kilpatrick, and Eric Lange among many others.
In Season 2, months after the end of the Dodson trial, Perry’s (Rhys) moved off the farm, ditched the milk truck, he’s even traded his leather jacket for a pressed suit. It’s the worst year of the Depression, and Perry and Della (Rylance) have set the firm on a safer path pursuing civil cases instead of the tumultuous work that criminal cases entail. Unfortunately, there isn’t much work for Paul (Chalk) in wills and contracts, so he’s been out on his own. An open-and-closed case overtakes the city of Los Angeles, and Perry’s pursuit of justice reveals that not everything is always as it seems.

The news of Pia “I Got Voted Off ‘Idol’ Way Early And All I Got Was This Awesome Record Deal” Toscano joining Interscope’s roster surprised no one, except maybe my cat Moo Shu. (Homegirl’s a Voice fan. She thinks Idol is so seven years ago.) Toscano already shattered records by being the lowest-placing Idol also-ran to nab a significant major label deal in the show’s ten year history. (She was ninth! Ninth, I say!)
While we wait to see whether Pia becomes the next Jennifer Hudson or Kristy Lee Cook, let’s look back at the careers of previous ninth-place finishers to see how they’ve fared.
Season One: Jim Verraros
Jim was our inaugural “token sob story” contestant, and he parlayed his name recognition into movie roles in popular gay indie flicks. (Eating Out 2: Sloppy Seconds might be my fave sequel title since Electric Boogaloo.

The 68th Annual Golden Globe nominations were announced today with The King’s Speech leading the pack with seven nominations including Best Picture (Drama), Colin Firth for Best Actor (Drama), Tom Hooper for Best Director, Helena Bonham Carter for Best Supporting Actress, and Geoffrey Rush for Best Supporting Actor. The film, which deals with King George VI’s stuttering problems, is expected to carry out this success to the Oscars and it is no surprise that it got the most Golden Globe nominations.
The Fighter picked up six nominations: Best Picture (Drama), David O. Russell (Best Director), Mark Wahlberg (Best Actor, Drama), Christian Bale (Best Supporting Actor), Amy Adams (Best Supporting Actress), and Melissa Leo (Best Supporting Actress). It tied with The Social Network for the second most nominations. Inception received four nominations including Best Picture (Drama), Best Director, and Best Screenplay.
The real bizarre news was in the Best Comedy/Musical category.

The 68th Golden Globe Award nominations, probably the most significant industry award ceremony preceding the Academy Awards (and most likely to match the Academy Awards), were announced minutes ago… and, of note, Halle Berry received a nomination for Best Actress (Drama) for her work in Frankie & Alice. So, it looks like the campaign has paid off somewhat. She hasn’t won, and she probably won’t win, given her competition, but at least she’s been noticed. Let’s see if Oscar voters feel the same way.

Carrie Underwood's brand new song which is crafted for "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" has been dropped for digital download on iTunes. The song has slow beat which gives enough space for the "American Idol" singer to belt her high notes.
"There's a place out there for us/ More than just a prayer or anything we ever dreamed of/ So if you feel like giving up cause you don't fit in down here/ Fear is crashing in, close your eyes and take my hand," she sings. "We can be the kings and queens of anything if we believe/ It's written in the stars that shine above/ A world where you and I belong, where faith and love will keep us strong."
It was co-written by Underwood along with David Hodges and Hillary Lindsey. "David Hodges had a piano melody going and Carrie and I...

All year long, the “CSI” criminologists get all the glory — not to mention best punchlines — but, once a year, the lab technicians are allowed out to come out and play. The writers devote an entire episode to their side of the forensics business. The tradition started in 2007. Affectionately called the “lab rat” episodes, they focus on the folks normally analyzing evidence behind the scenes and make for the funniest, most off-the-wall hour of each season, so it’s no surprise that many fans regard them as a high point. This Thursday, the lab rats are showcased in an episode titled “Field Mice,...

Los Angeles — Allison Iraheta is hard at work prepping her debut album for Jive Records while she's on the road for the American Idols Live! tour, and she has a great idea for a new tune, based on a line she said to a confounded Simon Cowell during the show.
"I will write a song called 'It's Not Like I'm Cutting Myself,' " Iraheta joked. "I will."
At a recent tour stop in L.A., the singer told MTV News she's "just a little exhausted, pretty much going with the flow. I definitely don't want to stop, because otherwise I'll crash and pass out."

One of the great comeback tales of the past few years has been the one owned by Linda Perry, who rescued herself from one-hit-wonder obscurity to become a top collaborator with some of the biggest names in pop music (like Christina Aguilera, Alicia Keys and Gwen Stefani). Kris Allen is currently working with super-producers David Hodges (Kelly Clarkson, Daughtry), Salaam Remi (Amy Winehouse) and Claude Kelly (Leona Lewis, Akon), but here are five circa-’90s songwriters who Allen should draft into collaboration service.

But he needs a big breakout that...

"American Idol" winner Kris Allen is busy preparing for the American Idols Live tour, but his album won't wait either. While runner-up Adam Lambert has hooked up with RedOne, Allen has recruited an all-star cast of collaborators for his still-in-development record.
Both Lambert and Allen have hooked up with former Evanescence member David Hodges, who has also collaborated with former "Idol" contestants Kelly Clarkson ("Because of You"), David Archuleta ("Crush") and Chris Daughtry ("What About Now").
Allen will also be collaborating with Salaam Remi, a hip-hop producer best known for his work with Nas ("Where Are They Now") and Amy Winehouse (everything on Back to Black not produced by Mark Ronson). Remi isn't the only urban influence that Allen is bringing in,...
