Last month, the 48th César Awards ceremony took place and alongside trophies given to recent releases, David Fincher was bestowed the Honorary César. It looks like the director––who is in post-production on his Michael Fassbender-led crime thriller The Killer ahead of a November release––took the honor seriously as he watched all the Best Film nominees: Pacifiction, Forever Young, Rise, The Innocent, the evening’s winner The Night of the 12th.
Across the viewings, the only one he appreciated was reportedly Albert Serra’s Pacifiction. Star of the film and César Best Actor winner Benoît Magimel told Allocine that he went to a dinner featuring Fincher and Brad Pitt, who relayed the kind words about the film. Magimel said, “[Brad Pitt told me]: ‘David Fincher is pretty tough. In twenty years, I must have seen him about five times happy to see a film. Meaning, he doesn’t like anything.’ He said to me,...

“Mank” got a big boost in its Oscar bid for Best Production Design with a win on April 10 at the Art Directors Guild Awards. It prevailed in the period design race over two of its Oscar rivals — “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “News of the World” — plus “Mulan” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.”
Its closest Oscar competition could be “Tenet,” which won the fantasy prize at the Adg Awards on Saturday; the fifth Oscar nominee, “The Father,” was not in contention here.
The other Adg winners were the contemporary film “Da 5 Bloods” and the animated film “Soul.”
The Adg Awards were bestowed during a virtual ceremony on April 10. Ryan Murphy was feted with the Cinematic Imagery Award.

David Fincher’s “Mank,” Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet,” Spike Lee’s “Da 5 Bloods,” and Pete Docter’s “Soul” were the big film winners at the 25th annual Art Directors Guild Awards Saturday evening, taking production design honors for period, fantasy, contemporary, and animated feature, respectively. Additionally, “The Mandalorian,” “Ozark,” and “The Queen’s Gambit” were among the TV winners at the ceremony, which bodes well for “The Mandalorian” and “The Queen’s Gambit’s” Emmy prospects in the craft category.
The annual awards fete the finest production design in movies, TV, commercials, music videos, and animated features in 12 categories.
The monochromatic “Mank” is the only film that took home an Adg award that is competing for Best Picture. Pixar’s “Soul” is the favorite for Best Animated Feature. Other Adg nominees included Oscar hopefuls “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.”

As is the case with most below-the-line Oscar categories, bigger equals better when it comes to Best Production Design. The more lavish the sets, the more accurate the period detail, the more extravagant the designs, the more likely your film will win an Academy Award. Formerly known as Best Art Direction/Set Decoration, this prize goes to the production designer and set decorator, leaving the poor art directors on the outside looking in; perhaps that accounts for the title change. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2021 Oscar predictions for Best Production Design.)
Like Best Costume Design, this award rarely corresponds with Best Picture. Before “The Shape of Water” prevailed in both categories in 2018, the last to line-up was “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” in 2004. Often, the winner of this race hasn’t even been nominated for the top prize, as was the case with “Memoirs of a Geisha...

The Art Directors Guild announced the nominations for the 25th Annual Excellence in Production Design Awards on Thursday, honoring the finest production design in theatrical motion pictures, television, commercials, music videos, and animation features.
Among the nominees for film are Oscar hopefuls “Mank,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” with TV accolades including “The Mandalorian,” “The Queen’s Gambit,” and “What We Do in the Shadows.”
Netflix was the big winner grabbing seven Adg nominations, including three period dramas; one fantasy film (George Clooney’s “The Midnight Sky”); and three contemporary films.
Also making the cut were Christopher Nolan’s time-inversion spy thriller, “Tenet” (production designed by five-time Oscar nominee Nathan Crowley), and two surprises: Emerald Fennell’s Oscar buzzy revenge black comedy, “Promising Young Woman,” which scored a contemporary Adg nomination, and Matteo Garron’s period “Pinocchio” Gothic re-imagining, which scored for period.

On February 25 the Art Directors Guild announced the nominees for its 25th annual awards, which will be handed out on April 10. These kudos have a stellar record at previewing the Academy Awards. Over the first 24 years of these prizes, the eventual Oscar winner for Best Production Design has always numbered among the Adg nominees in the various categories.
According to our expert predictions, period film contender “Mank” is the clear frontrunner to win the Oscar for Best Production Design. We expect that three of its rival in that race at the Adg — “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “News of the World” and “Mulan” — will also contend at the Oscars. The fifth Academy Awards nominee is expected to be “Tenet,” which vies in the fantasy film race at the Art Director Guild Awards.

Details of Patty Jenkins follow-up to 2017’s ‘Wonder Woman’ have started to trickle through from one of the producers that confirms ‘1984’ will not be a sequel.
Producer Charles Roven has hinted to Vulture that there will be hardly anything tying the two films together and that Gal Gadot’s ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ will, in fact, be a standalone movie much like we would expect from ‘Bond’.
“[Jenkins] was just determined that this movie should be the next iteration of Wonder Woman but not a sequel. And she’s definitely delivering on that. It’s a completely different time frame and you’ll get a sense of what Diana-slash-Wonder Woman had been doing in the intervening years. But it’s a completely different story that we’re telling.”
“It’s a stand-alone film in the same way that Indiana Jones or Bond films are, instead of one continuous story that requires many instalments.

Robin Wright is all set to reprise her role of General Antiope for Wonder Woman 1984. Although Antiope was killed off, Wright will be joining Chris Pine as Steve Trevor in returning from the dead for the sequel.
However, General Antiope’s return is looking like a more plausible one. She is expected to appear in a flashback scene with co-star Connie Nielson as Diana’s mother Queen Hippolyta.

“We talked about creating a beautiful island, but not being too close to the Greek islands, which is the obvious inspiration,” explains two-time Oscar nominated production designer Aline Bonetto (Amelie, A Very Long Engagement). “We wanted a beautiful, natural environment that the Amazons protect as the environment protects them. "Wonder Woman" is over a year-and-a-half away, but Warner Bros. is giving themselves plenty of room to get it right (and maybe add cameos during the undoubtedly scheduled reshoots). Production has started on the Patty Jenkins-directed movie, and full details about the cast have been revealed. Joining Gal Gadot and Chris Pine will be Robin Wright, Danny Huston, David Thewlis, Ewen Bremner, Saïd Taghmaoui, Elena Anaya, and Lucy Davis, however, their exact roles haven't been specified. Warner Bros. has announced the commencement of production on director Patty Jenkins’ solo Wonder Woman movie with a press release detailing the new cast additions, as well as an image that gives us our first official look at Gal Gadot (in this movie, anyway) as Princess Diana herself.
The additional cast members include Robin Wright, Danny Huston and David Thewlis – though the characters they’ll be playing are being kept under wraps for now. Nicole Kidman was said to be in talks to play another Amazonian warrior believed to be Diana’s mother, Hippolyta, but there’s no mention of her here. Perhaps that’s being saved for a separate announcement, or talks simply fell through and Robin Wright is now playing that role?
Regardless, you can check out the full press release, along with the first official Wonder Woman still, below:

Maybe the problem can be best summed up by noting that when Pj Hogan released his version in 2003, there were several critics who clutched their pearls and freaked out and acted nervous about the way the story's subtext threatened to become text. Why? Because he told the story the right way, and when you tell the story the right way, it is crystal clear that "Peter Pan; or, the Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up" is about that transitional moment when we cross from being children into something else. It is about loss of innocence and the fear of that loss. It is about a refusal to allow adulthood to gain any foothold, and what it is one would have to deny to stay a child forever.

Joe Wright ("Anna Karenina," "Atonement") has applied his renowned theatrical flair to "Pan" (October 9), setting it during World War II and melding it with bits of Harry Potter, "Oliver!" and Steven Spielberg. But judging from the 20 minutes of footage screened on Friday, it's fantastical as well, with flying Pirate ships and oceans in the sky. It's sure to be one of the buzzy Oscar craft contenders for cinematography (Seamus McGarvey and John Mathieson), production design (Aline Bonetto) and costume design (Jacqueline Durran, who's already won for "Anna Karenina"). It's an origin story about the boy who refuses to grow up in which "enemies become friends and friends become enemies." In Wright's version (scripted by Jason Fuchs), however, Pan's (Levi Miller) a mischievous 12-year-old orphan, who escapes to Neverland and helps lead a revolt as the chosen one against Blackbeard (Hugh Jackman). He enslaves the Lost Boys...

“Tracking Shot” is a monthly featurette here on Ioncinema.com that looks at a dozen or so projects that are moments away from lensing and with June being a major production month we’ve got a slew of projects that we feel are worth signaling out. Music appears to be a common narrative theme surrounding several items – we find it infused in Once‘s John Carney’s U.S. production debut – a 10 million dollar production about a dejected music business executive forms a bond with a young singer-songwriter new to Manhattan. Scarlett Johansson was formerly attached to Can a Song Save Your Life?, now Knightley appears to be on board. #9 – “AMÉLIE” (2001)
Directed by Jean Pierre Jeunet
Despite emerging as by far the weakest installment in the series “Alien Resurrection” does at least have one positive thing in its favour insofar as it led to director Jean Pierre Jeunet returning to France and creating the truly magical “Amélie”, a film so charming, so captivating and so irrepressibly exuberant that it should henceforth be considered prescribed viewing for anyone feeling a little disheartened with life.
With nary a poorly designed xenomorph hybrid in sight “Amélie” saw Jeunet unleash a wildly colourful magic box of cinematic surprises that coupled with Audrey Tautou’s beguiling lead performance (a role initially written for Emily Watson) resulted in quite possibly one of the most lovable, kind-hearted, sweet and affecting characters to emerge from modern cinema in many a year.

Fans of wonky French whimsy rejoice, for Jean-Pierre Jeunet is back! Check out the teaser trailer for Micmacs a Tire-Larigot here.No subtitles yet, but its not difficult to glean that it's a comedy in which French comedian Dany Boon plays a character called Bazil who gets shot in the head. The plot concerns Bazil taking down big-business arms manufacturers. Just like that bit in Bowling For Columbine when they take the bullets back to Wal-Mart. Or something.Trailers can be deceptive but it looks like it's very much back to Jeunet's business as usual, after the comparatively serious A Very Long Engagement: we've got a hero who likes the movies; we've got vintage-postcard cinematography; we've got music by Aline Bonetto; and he's not actually in the clip, but we know that Dominique Pinon is on hand.Jeunet has been hit-and-miss without his early collaborator Marc Caro (Delicatessen, The City...
