Beat to a Pulp
Review by Matthew Funk
Want to be trapped? Then I have the room for you.
Every good horror story gives us a glimpse at what’s squirming in the basement. The Master Bedroom by enigmatic female noir writer, Anonymous-9 is the rare species of story that doesn’t stop there. That’s what makes it great.
It takes us down the steps. It looks us in our eyes as it holds our hand. And patiently, quietly, it explains what goes on down there and why.
The Master Bedroom, featured on Beat to a Pulp, tells of a house with a very special family—Ozzy’s family, who he is trying, best as he was taught, not to let go to Hell. Ozzy is a dutiful son to his Mother and Father, so much so that he is trying to be the Master of their...

Ryan Phillippe, William H. Macy and John Leguizamo have joined the cast of the legal thriller "The Lincoln Lawyer" which Lionsgate has just acquired U.S. distribution rights for from Lakeshore Entertainment and Sidney Kimmel Entertainment.
Based on the 2005 Michael Connolly best-seller, the story follows low-level criminal defense attorney Mickey Haller (Matthew McConaughey) who ends up representing a Beverly Hills playboy with ties to a previous murder case he handled.
Marisa Tomei will play Haller's ex-wife and the case's prosecuting attorney Maggie McPherson. Michael Pena, Trace Adkins, and Katherine Moennig also star.
Brad Furman ("The Take") will direct from a screenplay by John Romano ("Nights in Rodanthe," "Intolerable Cruelty"). Tom Rosenberg, Gary Lucchesi, and Sidney Kimmel will produce. Filming kicks off July 6th in Los Angeles.

There's not been much information about The Lincoln Lawyer since last October's news that Tommy Lee Jones might be jumping aboard as both co-star and director. That deal seems to have fallen through, but Matthew McConaughey is certainly still attached, and now he may be joined by Marisa Tomei.Tomei would play Maggie McPherson, the prosecuting attorney ex-wife of McConaughey's defense lawyer Micky Haller. You can see where their disagreements might have arisen. The film is based on the novel by Michael Connolly, the first of three (so far, not including other appearances) featuring Haller, which involves the lawyer, who uses his Lincoln Town Car as his office, scoring a wealthy client with honesty issues.McConaughey has tried for serieses and missed before (Sahara anyone?) so this could be the recurring character he's been looking for. He might have done better to plump for Haller's half-brother Harry Bosch though, at fifteen novels and counting.

I always hate reporting this kind of news, especially when there isn't a replacement director yet. It all just feels so hopeless. Last month we reported that Tommy Lee Jones would be directing and co-starring in The Lincoln Lawyer, a legal thriller based on Michael Connolly's 2005 novel. However, Variety reports tonight that Jones has left the project "over creative differences on the script." John Romano (Intolerable Cruelty, Nights in Rodanthe) wrote the script, that Lakeshore will hold onto until they can get another director attached, hopefully in time to shoot this next spring. I don't think Jones will be co-starring either. The story in The Lincoln Lawyer follows "Mickey Haller, a wheeler-dealer Los Angeles lawyer who operates out of the back of his Lincoln." Haller is fine with defending garden-variety criminals until he lands the case of a lifetime: defending a Beverly Hills playboy accused of murder. Matthew McConaughey...

If the Hollywood Reporter as I have known it for more than 60 years is gone, it must be noted that three of its recent editorial heads were among the finest in its history. In fact, they are among the finest in the annals of Hollywood coverage. Yes, I'm alluding to Elizabeth Guider, Alex Ben Block and Robert Dowling.
Other top-notch Hollywood Reporter heads included Tichi Wilkerson, Frank Barron, Don Gillette, Jim Powers, Howard Burns and Hal Bates. Its memorable daily columnists included Mike Connolly, Herb Stein, Jim Henagan, Robert Osborne and Hank Grant.

Tommy Lee Jones is in talks to direct and co-star alongside Matthew McConaughey in Lakeshore Entertainment's "The Lincoln Lawyer," a thriller based on the novel by Michael Connolly.
The story sounds pretty cool. The film follows a Los Angeles lawyer who works out of the back of his Lincoln and picks up his biggest case yet when he agrees to defend a Beverly Hills playboy accused of murder.
The Hollywood Reporter says McConaughey plays Mickey Haller, the lawyer. The trade says it's unknown at this stage what character Jones would play. John Romano wrote the script.

Tommy Lee Jones has had a pretty fruitful acting career, but more recently he has taken a turn towards work behind the camera. In 2005 he made his feature directorial debut with the western crime-drama The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada. While I haven't gotten the chance to see it yet, a 7.6 IMDb rating and an 84% on Rotten Tomatoes makes it look like it was a solid debut in the director's chair. Now THR reports that Jones has just set up his next feature directing project with The Lincoln Lawyer, a legal thriller announced back in March which will also have Tommy Lee Jones co-starring with Matthew McConaughey. Based on Michael Connolly's 2005 novel, this follows "Mickey Haller, a wheeler-dealer Los Angeles lawyer who operates out of the back of his Lincoln." I've gotten so used to Matthew McConaughey banking on his charm and good looks, that I frequently forget I enjoyed the actor in the first role I saw him in - the adaptation of John Grisham's legal drama, A Time To Kill. Not that McConaughey didn't take advantage of his charisma for the movie, but I did like the movie, and I'm not usually a fan of legal dramas. McConaughey is returning to the courtroom in a movie adapted from Michael Connolly's best selling novel, The Lincoln Lawyer. According to Variety, the movie will see McConaughey play a low-level criminal defense attorney who winds up representing a wealthy client with ties to one of his previous cases. The Lincoln Lawyer is one of those cases where I have to question the demand for a movie adaptation, since the movie deal was set into motion months before the book...

Matthew McConaughey is taking a break from the romantic comedies and returning to the court room. According to the trades, McConaughey has signed on to star in The Lincoln Lawyer, an adaptation of the Michael Connolly best-seller that Lakeshore Entertainment is developing. The legal thriller centers on low-level criminal defense attorney Mickey Haller (McConaughey) who finds himself representing a wealthy client with ties to a previous murder case Haller handled. Lakeshore acquired the big screen rights to the novel six months before it hit shelves in 2005. McConaughey played a lawyer in 1996’s A Time to Kill. The John Grisham adaptation also starred Sandra Bullock, Samuel L. Jackson, Oliver Platt, Ashley Judd, Kevin Spacey and Kiefer & Donald Sutherland. McConaughey, who most recently played a supporting role in the Ben Stiller comedy Tropic Thunder, will next be seen opposite Jennifer Garner in the romantic comedy Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, which opens in May.

Lakeshore Entertainment has announced that Matthew McConaughey will star in their upcoming adaptation of The Lincoln Lawyer. When I read today's Variety headline about Matthew McConaughey's next project, I was briefly terrified that Steven Spielberg had ditched Liam Neeson and cast McConaughey instead in the lead role of his Abraham Lincoln biopic. Happily for all of us, that's not remotely true, even though McConaughey will be playing a lawyer somehow inspired by our 16th President. The movie, The Lincoln Lawyer, will feature McConaughey as a defense attorney who represents a client with ties to a previous murder case the lawyer was involved in. It's based on a book by Michael Connolly, published in 2005, and original snapped up by Lakeshore Entertainment six months before the book even came out. Maybe they wanted to wait until we were all incessantly talking about Lincoln before putting the movie out there? It's worth remembering that one of McConaughey's most notable roles was in a legal-themed drama, A Time To Kill.

Matthew McConaughey is set to play another lawyer in the upcoming legal thriller, "The Lincoln Lawyer."
Based on the book by Michael Connolly, McConaughey is attached to star as low-level criminal defense attorney Michael Haller who has to defend a super-rich client. The problem is, this wealthy customer may have ties to a previous murder case that Haller handled.
The last time McConaughey starred as a lawyer, effectively, was in "A Time to Kill" based on a John Grisham novel.

When it comes to Matthew McConaughey I actually like the actor despite his tendency to find himself in rather sh*tty rom-coms and busted pics altogether. I liked him in Dazed and Confused, loved his performance in A Time to Kill (one of my personal film favs), even found enjoyment in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (not bad when it comes to rom-coms) and I thought his role in Tropic Thunder was an excellent piece of casting. On top of that I know there are a few passionate fans of Reign of Fire, but unfortunately with those in the bag you still run into films such as Sahara, Two for the Money and Fool's Gold, making it obvious the films in his later career have not exactly been up to snuff. However, this latest project has me intrigued. Variety has announced McConaughey will star as Mickey Haller in...

Before Hollywood realized Matthew McConaughey was the world's oldest good looking frat boy, the industry mistakenly pegged him as a "serious" actor and he embarrassingly appeared out of depth in films such as "Contact," where he played a religious leader, and "A Time to Kill" and "Amistad" where he played a lawyer -- twice. After "Surfer Dude" that's pretty hard to fathom isn't it? Well, not according to Lakeshore Entertainment. t;_self">Variety reports McConaughey will suit up as legal counsel once again in the thriller "The Lincoln Lawyer." Variety reports that on the eve of the release of his new Last House On The Left by Rogue Pictures, director Dennis Iliadis (pictured) has signed to take the helm of a chiller called Cure. Although Asian-remake house Vertigo Entertainment is one of the production companies involved, the film is not related to the Kiyoshi Kurosawa movie of the same title.
This Cure, scripted by Max Payne’s Beau Michael Thorne, is about a woman who undergoes an experimental procedure that’s intended to save her from a terminal illness—but she comes home to her husband with a far more frightening condition. The producing team includes Vertigo’s Roy Lee and Doug Davison, Michael London of Groundswell Productions, the new Friday The 13th’s Brian Witten of Witten Pictures and Mad Hatt Entertainment’s Michael Connolly. The film is set to roll this summer.

Jack Bradford, a jack-of-all-trades who wrote the Rambling Reporter column for The Hollywood Reporter during the mid-1960s, died Feb. 9 in Los Angeles. He was 85.
Bradford was a "leg man" and vacation replacement for columnist Mike Connolly at The Reporter and took over writing duties after Connolly's death in 1966, penning the column for a year. During his 10-year association with the newspaper, he also worked to start Jay Allen's book-publicity firm, where he worked on Jacqueline Susann's "Valley of the Dolls" and with other writers including Gore Vidal.
He also wrote columns and film reviews for such publications as Coronet, Screen Stories, Inside TV and Cosmopolitan.
Before his writing career, Bradford had small roles in Hollywood films in the '50s, including "Navy Wife," "No Time for Sergeants," "The FBI Story," "The Best of Everything" and the Lauren Bacall starrer "The Gift of Love."

Things are looking good for Bryan Bertino. The writer/director of The Strangers (review) has just signed a deal with Rogue Pictures, Focus Features' genre arm, to bring them two more thrillers in the coming years according to Variety. A Strangers sequel is not part of the deal.
The first will be a film simply called Black, which the trade describes as a character-driven thriller with supernatural elements. Michael Connolly’s Mad Hatter Entertainment will produce.
The other film is Alone, a project Rogue’s been working on for a while now. Bertino will take a pass at the script and may direct if he likes it enough. I have to say it’s pretty rare so many choices are given to a first-time writer/director; here’s hoping he can keep his momentum up!
