America’s Funniest Home Videos creator Vin Di Bona has sold a majority stake in his eponymous production company and FishBowl Worldwide Media to an investor group led by Clarion Capital Partners.
Di Bona is remaining CEO of both companies, which will be key components of Clarion-backed entity V10 Entertainment. V10 is led by CEO John Stevens, who founded Zoo Productions and Hangar 56 Media, and President Hans Schiff, a former non-scripted agent at CAA.
Financial terms were not disclosed, but sources familiar with the transaction said it falls in the nine-figure range, a healthy sum given the currently adverse macroeconomic conditions. The official announcement of the deal said it will furnish Di Bona’s companies with “access to substantial capital” with which they intend to expand on their family-friendly slates with new non-fiction traditional and digital titles. The house that “Afv” built is about to get a lot bigger.
Vin Di Bona, creator and executive producer of ABC’s enduring unscripted franchise “America’s Funniest Home Videos,” has sold a majority stake in Vin Di Bona Productions and Fishbowl Worldwide Media to a private investor group led by Clarion Capital Partners.
The transaction calls for Di Bona’s operation to be the cornerstone of a portfolio of content and production assets managed under the Venture 10 Studio Group umbrella, led by Hans Schiff, a longtime unscripted agent and alum of CAA and WME, and producer John Stevens. Clarion Capital, previously a key investor in IMAX, is prepared to take a big swing into the world of content production, starting with the Di Bona purchase. The transaction is believed to be valued in the nine-figure range given the value of the “Afv” library and Di Bona’s related businesses.

“Afv,” the family TV institution that Bob Saget helped launch in 1989, will pay tribute to its original host for the rest of the season with a regular segment showcasing memorable moments from his time on the ABC series.
“America’s Funniest Home Videos” honored its original emcee in its Jan. 16 episode, a week after Saget’s death at the age of 65. But executive producer Vin Di Bona decided earlier this week that there was too much prime PG-rated Saget material in the vault from his eight-year run not to share more on the air.
“I’d forgotten how whimsical and crazy his host bits were — very physical and very visual,” Di Bona told Variety. “In one show he walks on stage in front of the audience and says ‘Did I tell you it’s my birthday?’ And the audience all raises their hands with wrapped gifts for him. It’s that...

“America’s Funniest Home Videos” has vaulted past “Gunsmoke” and joined the rarefied ranks of “The Simpsons” on the list of primetime entertainment series that have amassed an astounding 700 episodes.
The milestone segment kicks off “Afv’s” 32nd season on ABC on Oct. 3. Getting there over the past year and a half was a heck of a journey for “Afv” veterans, who thought they’d seen it all when it comes to producing the beloved clip show.
The biggest jolt was the loss of the studio audience. The show’s competition and comedy elements lean heavily on the reaction of the “Afv” studio audience, as executive producers Vin Di Bona and Michele Nasraway explain.
“We did one show without an audience and we said, ‘Ok we really need to make a big pivot,’” Di Bona says. “We missed the laughter that is so affirming in our show.” Host Alfonso Ribeiro admits...

Even as technology caught up to ABC’s “America’s Funniest Home Videos,” the 30-year-old clip show found a way to co-exist with online viral videos.
“We’ve worked with YouTube and Snapchat and other platforms to embrace how we can utilize what we do and what they do,” says “Afv” creator Vin Di Bona.
Since it began in 1989, “Afv” has been a showcase for funny videos — guys getting hit in their groins, wigs falling off, pranks caught on tape, pets getting into mischief — with each episode’s most-liked videos, as judged by the show’s studio audience, winning cash prizes.
“Afv” survived the dawn of YouTube and the existential threat it posed to the TV show by looking at such platforms as potential partners, rather than challenges. “The public loves it,” says Di Bona.
This started about seven years ago, although Di Bona admits it was an adjustment. When...

Some of film, television, music and tech’s biggest influencers gathered Thursday for the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and Variety‘s 2018 State of the Entertainment Industry Conference.
Producer Vin Di Bona; executives Kristin Cavanaugh of Sony Pictures Entertainment and Christina Derenthal of Paramount Pictures; chamber of commerce chair Donelle Dadigan; and Los Angeles city officials Mitch O’Farrell and Kevin James kicked off the program with opening remarks. They were followed by James Corden. The CBS late-night host introduced music-industry executives Lucian Grainge and Irving Azoff, who spoke with Corden about the business as well as their longstanding friendship.

Bob Saget is headed back to ABC for another clip-style show, re-teaming with “America’s Funniest Home Videos” producer Vin Di Bona for the more adult-themed, “Videos After Dark.”
“Videos After Dark” will feature Saget offering his comedic take on old clips from the “Afv” team that were deemed too racy to air on the show, which ran on Sunday evenings. Saget hosted the first eight seasons of “Afv,” along with his starring role on ABC’s sitcom, “Full House.” Saget reprised his “Full House” character Danny Tanner on the Netflix revival, “Fuller House.”
Former “Fresh Prince of Bel Air” star Alfonso Ribeiro is the show’s current host, which was picked up for two more seasons on Monday.

Bob Saget is reuniting with producer Vin Di Bona and ABC for a clip-show series, but this time the content will be decidedly more adult-oriented than the family-friendly tone of “America’s Funniest Home Videos.”
“Videos After Dark” will feature Saget offering his comedic take on clips harvested by Di Bona’s “Afv” team over the years that were too risqué for airing at 7 p.m. on Sunday. Saget hosted the first eight seasons of ABC’s enduring unscripted franchise, concurrent with his run on the ABC family comedy “Full House.” The half-hour “Videos After Dark” will air in a 10 p.m. slot when it premieres next year.
In addition to greenlighting “Videos After Dark,” “Afv” has also been renewed for two more seasons, through its 31st frame. “Afv” ranks as one of TV’s longest-running entertainment franchise, having bowed as a special in 1989. “Afv” exec producer Di Bona has...

Collab is giving its partners a new way to protect their content from unlicensed reuse. The network, whose partners include Destorm Power (pictured above), David Dobrik, and Baby Ariel, has launched a tool called CollabDRM, which lets its users set up customized digital rights management policies.
CollabDRM, like YouTube's Content ID service, is able to track down unlicensed use of its clients' videos. Once identified, the infringing content can be monetized, thus generating more revenue for rights holders across the web. Where Collab believes it has improved on Content ID is in the customizable nature of its solutions. The network's partners can work with its rights management team in order to ensure videos are claimed and dealt with in the best possible manner.
While the social stars who make up much of Collab's roster will certainly find uses for the new technology, the network has also enlisted several media companies as rights management partners,...
