William Reynolds, who portrayed crime-stopping Special Agent Tom Colby opposite Efrem Zimbalist Jr. on the final seven seasons of the ABC crime drama The F.B.I., has died. He was 90.
Reynolds died Wednesday in Wildomar, California, from non-covid 19 complicated pneumonia, a family spokesperson announced.
The Los Angeles native also starred in three other series, all short-lived: as the trumpet player on the 1959 NBC drama Pete Kelly’s Blues, created by Jack Webb; on ABC’s The Islanders, a 1960-61 adventure show set in the East Indies; and on the World War II-set The Gallant Men, which ran on ABC from 1962-63.
In 1960, Reynolds memorably played a WWII officer who can’t ignore an ominous light on the faces of his men destined to be killed in the acclaimed Twilight Zone season-one episode “The Purple Testament.”

The new documentary Julia Scotti: Funny That Way, begins with senior trans standup comedienne Julia Scotti reflecting on her 69 years and an arduous but ultimately fulfilling journey to embrace her female gender identity.
“Just a baby born male who never felt quite right,” Scotti observes, adding modestly, “It isn’t much to speak of, but it is my life.”
The film, by first-time director Susan Sandler, documents the path Scott took to a later-in-life resurgence of her comedy career, a flourishing that could only come through self-acceptance. The documentary, released by 1091 Pictures as Pride Month kicked off, is available on streaming platforms, including iTunes, Apple TV, Google Play, Amazon Prime Video, Vimeo, and Vudu.
“Originally from Fairview, New Jersey, for the first 48 years she was better known as comedian Rick Scotti,” Julia writes on her website. “She toured the country, appearing at venues all over the United States and Canada,...

On-the-beat editing for the documentary “Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool” comes courtesy of Lewis Erskine who brings rhythm to the images apace with that perfect flow of the jazz icon’s horn. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2019 and earned a nomination at the NAACP’s 2020 Image Awards for outstanding documentary film. It premieres on PBS’ “American Masters” with additional footage tonight (Feb. 25).
“One of the responsibilities of editing, and the job, is to harness this huge amount of material and put it together,’ says Lewis, the film’s editor. “So it swings.”
And does it ever. In vintage photos and video footage cut together to the tempo of the soundtrack, every frame evokes the mood and era in each phase of Davis’ life — the somber melody; the raging fury; the sophisticated, poetic, jazz symphony — all artfully blended.

In the words of Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs (as quoted in the press release), in 2015 "our branches have recognized a more diverse and inclusive list of filmmakers and artists than ever before, and we look forward to adding their creativity, ideas and experience to our organization." Strangely dropping a press release on a historic day where the nation's attention is elsewhere, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed their annual list of new member invitees this morning. For those who criticize the makeup of the Academy there was some good news and the stark realization the organization still has a long way to go. The Academy has spent the last eight to 10 years attempting to diversify its membership and this year's class mostly reflects that. There are significantly more invitees of Asian and African-American descent, but the male to female disparity is still depressing. Out of the 25 potential new members of the Actor's Branch only seven are women. And, no, there isn't really an acceptable way for the Academy to spin that sad fact. Additionally, It's important to realize the 322 people noted in the release have only been invited to join Hollywood's most exclusive club.

Not all docu films that make the cut into the Sundance Institute’s Documentary Edit and Story Labs are fortunate enough to then land a coveted spot at the festival (recent examples include Roger Ross Williams’ God Loves Uganda and Tracy Draz Tragos and Andrew Droz Palermo’s Rich Hill) but some fresh air and supportive pounding from the Institute’s Advisors surely contributes to the realization of passion projects that are buckets filled in blood, sweat and tears. Among the press release mentions below, we’ll surely be discussing them in Park City setting in a January to too far off from now. Here are the selection of 20 Fellows representing eight documentary film projects to participate in the 2014 Documentary Edit and Story Labs, June 20-28 and July 4-12 at Sundance Resort in Sundance, Utah.

Oscars: “Hugo,” “The Descendants” and the Writers Guild winners in today’s Oscar news – Awards Alley
By Sean O’Connell
hollywoodnews.com: The final weekend before the Academy Awards, which will be held on Feb. 26, was bustling with Guild recognitions as Oscar contenders jockey for position and wait for what remains the biggest “game” in the entertainment industry. We’ll have ample coverage of the Oscars as the lengthy (lengthy!) marathon finally draws to a close. But for Monday morning, let’s run through the last few awards that were handed out before the Oscars finally get here:

I can only hope that those fine folks behind the Scripter and Ace Eddie Awards don’t take umbrage at the fact that, before this morning, I had never heard of them. It doesn’t really matter, however; a few people are giving them a big thanks at this very minute, seeing as the two groups held their respective ceremonies just last night.
The Descendants earned the USC Libraries Scripter Award, which commemorates “the author and scribes of a produced literary work-to-film adaptation” — in this case, Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon, Jim Rash, and Kaui Hart Hemmings, the lattermost of whom wrote the source material. That film and those four bested A Dangerous Method (Christopher Hampton and John Kerr), Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (Bridget O’Connor, Peter Straughan, and John le Carré), Jane Eyre (Moira Buffini and Charlotte Bronte), and Moneyball (Aaron Sorkin, Steve Zaillian, Stan Chervin, and Michael Lewis). George Clooney, Shailene Woodley, The Descendants The Descendants (Kevin Tent) and The Artist (Anne-Sophie Bion, Michel Hazanavicius) were the two live-action narrative features to win the 2012 American Cinema Editor Awards at a ceremony held this evening at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills. That shows Ace Award voters opted for more subdued film editing jobs this year: The Descendants' competitors, for instance, included David Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Steven Spielberg's War Horse, and Martin Scorsese's Hugo; one of The Artist's competitors was Paul Feig's hectic comedy Bridesmaids. [Full list of Ace Eddie Award winners/nominations.] Or perhaps Ace voters just wanted to reward someone new. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo's Angus Wall and Kirk Baxter were last year's winner for Fincher's The Social Network. Hugo's Thelma Schoonmaker has already won four Ace Awards — aka Eddies — each for a Martin Scorsese-directed film: Raging Bull...

Each year American Cinema Editors [1] (Ace) recognizes the best editing of the year in narrative film, documentary and television through the Eddie Awards. The nominations for achievement in 2011 have been released [2]. They include a couple of expected films such as Hugo and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, and feature a couple other inclusions that might count as surprises to some. The full list is below. This list comes from the Ace press release about this year's Eddies. In this case, I like that there are feature film categories for dramatic and comedy/musical efforts; not that editing one or the other is more difficult, but editing is such a core component of comedy and musical films, and one that so often goes unheralded and even unexamined, that it deserves a moment in the sun. Looking at the documentary selections, I was at first disappointed not to see Senna included,...

The 62nd annual Ace Eddie Awards have announced their nominees this year for the best in editing. Last year, The Social Network team of Angus Wall and Kirk Baxter rightfully won the top award, while Exit Through the Gift Shop picked it up for documentary. Out of the noms below, I’d love to see Thelma Schoonmaker pick it up for Hugo, mostly due to the last third of the film or Kevin Tent’s fitting relaxed tone on The Descendants. As for Moneyball and War Horse, outside of some well put-together sequences, both felt overlong and thus undeserving of the award. Same goes for Werner Herzog‘s Cave of Forgotten Dreams, whereas David Tedeschi’s George Harrison: Living in the Material World runs almost four hours and has excellent pacing. Check out all the noms below.

The Descendants

hollywoodnews.com: The American Cinema Editors announced their nominations for the 62nd Annual Ace Eddie Awards Monday morning, recognizing outstanding editing in nine categories of film, television and documentaries.
Like the Golden Globes, the editors divide their films between “Dramatic” and “Comedic” categories, so its tough to peg how (or if) they play into the five Oscar nomination slots. At the very least, you can guess that the Academy’s five nominees will come from the five features listed below.
Winners will be revealed during Ace’s 62nd annual black-tie awards ceremony on Saturday, February 18, 2012 in the International Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton Hotel. As previously announced, the ceremony will be hosted by actor/comedian Patton Oswalt. Later this month Ace will announce the Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year honoree and two Career Achievement honorees.

Kiss Me Deadly (Criterion) Robert Aldrich’s 1955 reinvention of the film noir detective story is one of cinema’s great genre mash-ups: part hardboiled noir; part cold war paranoid thriller; and part science- fiction. Ralph Meeker plays Mickey Spillane’s fascist detective Mike Hammer as a narcissistic simian thug, a sadist who would rather smash a suspect’s fingers than make love to the bevvy of beautiful dames that cross his path. In fact, the only time you see a smile cross Meeker’s sneering mug is when he’s doling out pain, with a vengeance. When a terrified young woman (Cloris Leachman, film debut) literally crossed Hammer’s path one night, and later turns up dead, he vows to get to the bottom of her brutal demise. One of the most influential films ever made, and perhaps the most-cited film by the architects...
