[To get you into the spooky spirit, the Daily Dead team is spotlighting double features that we think would be fun to watch this Halloween season. Keep an eye on Daily Dead for more double feature recommendations, and check here for our previous Halloween 2017 coverage.]
The two films in this Halloween season double feature recommendation seem like an unlikely pairing, but definitely have more in common than meets the eye. Despite little differences here and there, both films are small, loud, shocking, and out of this world. I also really enjoy films whose plots slowly unravel, and we learn what is going on as the truth is revealed to the characters. For me, that kind of pacing keeps you guessing from start to finish, and Honeymoon (2014) and 10 Cloverfield Lane have all of these elements in spades.
To set the mood for what will be roughly four hours of an extraterrestrial-beings-take-over-our-world marathon, I recommend that you start things off with Honeymoon, directed by Leigh Janiak and starring Harry Treadaway (Mr. Mercedes, Penny Dreadful), Rose Leslie (Game of Thrones), Ben Huber, and Hanna Brown. It tells the story of newlyweds Paul (Treadaway) and Bea (Leslie), who are...

“I thought I was going to get fired.”
In a perfect world, such a thought would never cross Melanie Lynskey’s mind, for the talented actress would literally never be in danger of getting canned. She could throw fits next to crafty, punch a grip in the face, or burn down the sets, and we’d still forgive her because… Well, because Melanie Lynskey would never do any of that. She’s Melanie Lynskey.
But the actor you fell in love with during “Beautiful Creatures,” “Togetherness,” or the 2017 Sundance Grand Jury Prize-winning film “I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore” did have the thought cross her mind for the strangest of reasons: Tom McCarthy found out she was a recurring cast member on “Two and a Half Men.”

John Goodman is one of the great American actors and never gets enough credit. Somehow stately and understated, Goodman’s an unmistakable one-man show, whose baritone voice and generous build allow him to oscillate between gentle giant and hulkish beast — often settling for something in between.
That makes his particular talents hard to categorize. In some respect that’s a byproduct of his filmography, which encompasses both flashy blockbusters and elegant dramas. Even when he’s the best part of a movie, he rarely dominates it; he’s a familiar face in search of a vessel.
With “10 Cloverfield Lane,” however, Goodman found an ideal outlet for his talents. He’s the longest of Oscar long shots, but that’s plenty to justify examining exactly what he pulled off here, and why it speaks to a career that’s never quite wholly appreciated.

A twisty tale of a woman who wakes up in a bunker with two men, one of whom claims to have saved her from a catastrophe
Starting life as a psychological thriller written on spec by Josh Campbell and Matt Stuecken under the title The Cellar, this mutated into a distant relative of Matt Reeves’ sci-fi hit Cloverfield thanks to the involvement of Jj Abrams’s Bad Robot productions. With Whiplash writer/director Damien Chazelle now sharing screenwriting credit with Stuecken and Campbell, director Dan Trachtenberg’s feature debut finds Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s Michelle waking up in an underground bunker after running her car off the road. With her are John Goodman’s Howard, a survivalist who insists that he saved Michelle not only from the crash, but also from some unspecified toxic catastrophe above ground; and John Gallagher Jr’s Emmett, whose status is initially uncertain, but who believes Howard’s tales of an apocalypse. What follows is a twisty, sinewy three-hander in which each of the trapped trio variously trusts and suspects the others’ moves and motives – more The Disappearance of Alice Creed meets Room than War of the Worlds. All three cast members play their roles to a tee, with Goodman walking a thin line between threat and pathos, while Winstead does a terrific job of leading the audience through the increasingly outlandish revelations of the plot. The film-makers keep us guessing about what’s happening above ground (A nuclear strike? The monster attack of Cloverfield? Or some fantastical fabrication?) but the real drama lies in the interpersonal chamber-piece dynamics of these increasingly frazzled characters.

Chicago – With “10 Cloverfield Lane,” Producer J.J. Abrams attempts a classic bait and switch on his audience. The name and the tagline suggest a connection to Abrams found footage monster movie, 2008’s “Cloverfield.” But in all honesty, this film has very little to do with the events of that movie.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
It’s actually an old low budget thriller that’s been hastily repackaged and shrouded in secrecy as a marketing ploy. Because if you called this movie “2 Guys, a Girl and a Bomb Shelter” very few people would actually go see it.
The film is more mystery than special effects extravaganza as the audience and the characters try to decipher what exactly is true and what isn’t. After a car accident, Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) wakes up chained to a wall in a bomb shelter – containing Howard (John Goodman) and a slightly dopey handyman named Emmett (John Gallagher Jr....

The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street: Trachtenberg’s Debut Promises a Franchise
Good things can come from found footage, at least evidenced by 10 Cloverfield Lane, a loosely related offshoot of the 2008 Matt Reeves’ film, Cloverfield. Beyond the obvious signifier, however, these two films differ greatly, with newcomer Dan Trachtenberg volleying against the odds with inherited, studio owned material. Playing down the obvious sci-fi elements, this beast belongs to the school of less is more, resembling a sort of Misery meets Blast from the Past with peripheral elements of the “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” back story thrown in. Pared down to a trio surviving what seems either an apocalyptic event or aggressive extraterrestrial attack, the script (co-written by Matthew Stuecken, Josh Campbell and Whiplash director Damien Chazelle) wisely focuses on more domestic terrors, where survival of the fittest scenarios prove mankind to be his own worst enemy even when faced with possible extinction.

Forget the Cloverfield connection. The actors who were in this film didn’t even know what the title was until moments before the first trailer dropped. Producer J.J. Abrams used that branding as part of the wrapping for its promotional mystery box, but the movie stands perfectly alone from 2008’s found-footage monster picture. Hell, 10 Cloverfield Lane perhaps doesn’t even take place within the same fictional universe as that film — although a friend asked if it’s secretly a Super 8 sequel, and, honestly, you could think of it as one without contradicting anything in either movie. Whether the Cloverfield name fills you with wariness or enthusiasm, it would be unwise to burden Dan Trachtenberg‘s film with such prejudices.
But there is a strong thematic thread to string between Cloverfield and this “spiritual successor.” Both are overt 9/11 stories — the former about living through the event and the latter about living in its aftermath.

J.J. Abrams managed to surprise everyone when he dropped a trailer and an impending release date for the “blood relative” of 2008’s “Cloverfield,” and critics are loving “10 Cloverfield Lane.” The thriller/drama has a current score of 93 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, and critics are describing the film starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Goodman and John Gallagher, Jr., as “tense,” “exhilarating” and one of the “scariest movies” they’ve seen in a long time. The movie, directed by Dan Trachtenberg, is about aspiring fashion designer Michelle (Winstead) who walks out on a relationship, but after her car goes off the road — in an.

I'm really looking forward to 10 Cloverfield Lane, Bad Robot's upcoming Cloverfield sequel (that reportedly won't feature the same monster that terrorized NYC in the first movie). I have my expectations in check as to what kind of movie it will be — which seems very important for this particular film — but even if it's just a contained thriller without many noticeable connections to the original at all, I'm curious to watch the feature directorial debut of Dan Trachtenberg (former co-host of The Totally Rad Show and director of Portal: No Escape) and see what he does with that great cast (Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Goodman, and John Gallagher Jr).

Hello again, dear readers. We’re in the middle of January, and it’s still slim pickings in terms of new movies, although I plan on checking out the new horror movie The Boy this weekend. But there are still cool new trailers for me to watch and analyze. This week’s column takes a look at the first trailer for the upcoming science-fiction mystery thriller 10 Cloverfield Lane.
Premise: Waking up from a car accident, a young woman (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) finds herself in the basement of a man (John Goodman) who says he’s saved her life from a chemical attack that has left the outside uninhabitable.
My take: In this day and age of 24/7 media coverage, it’s nearly impossible for a film to truly sneak up and surprise us. One film that did manage that was Cloverfield (2008), the found-footage giant monster film from producer J. J. Abrams,...

With submissions ranging from countries like Italy and Nepal to as short as several minutes to feature length films, every aspect of storytelling has been covered within the 2015 Soho International Film Festival . It only seems fitting that the festival wraps up its sixth annual festival with a number of prominent presenters including The Avengers’ Robert Clohessy and Rescue Me’s James McCaffrey. With awards given to the best of the best at the festival, it was a great close to another successful year for the festival.
There was an even greater presence among the jurors of the festival, with people have worked as actors on shows like Dexter to writers and directors having worked on films like On Golden Years. The jurors included Emmy Award nominee journalist and educator Ernabel Demillo, or ABC Network Casting Head Marci Phillips. David Zayas, an actor on Gotham and Donna McKenna, a casting director and producer,...

J.J. Abrams surprised moviegoers on Thursday night with the release of the trailer for a top secret sequel to 2008’s “Cloverfield.” The film, described by Abrams as a “blood relative” to the original film, stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Goodman and John Gallagher, Jr. Winstead plays a woman who awakens after a car accident in an underground bunker, being told that the world has been destroyed in a chemical attack. Fans of the original are extremely excited, especially with the news that the movie will be released in March. And in this day and age, it’s hard to believe those details were kept.

I watched Michael Bay's 13 Hours last night and saw a trailer for a new mysterious new J.J. Abrams produced film called 10 Cloverfield Lane. This, my friends, is a sequel to the 2008 movie Cloverfield, only it looks a hell of a lot more intriguing. The news was offically confirmed by Abrams himself. He told Collider:
“The idea came up a long time ago during production. We wanted to make it a blood relative of Cloverfield. The idea was developed over time. We wanted to hold back the title for as long as possible.”
The movie was directed by short film director Dan Trachtenberg, and it has a great cast that includes Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Goodman, and John Gallagher, Jr. In an interview with the outlet, Winstead offered some information on the film, explaining that her character wakes up in a cellar where she’s being kept by a stranger,...

Dropping just hours after the project was announced, the teaser trailer has arrived for the J.J. Abrams-produced "10 Cloverfield Lane," something of a spin-off or sister film to the 2008 creature feature "Cloverfield". Like that film, the campaign here is playing up the mystery angle and that starts with this trailer which is executed brilliantly and is certainly the first great trailer of 2016 so far.
Starting out as what looks like a father and his two adult children trying to kill time together at home, the situation grows increasingly stranger and darker as the backing music of the original version of "I Think We're Alone Now" decelerates and the level of dread increases. Dan Trachtenberg ("Portal: No Escape") helms the film which stars John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and John Gallagher, Jr. and is slated to open March 11th.

Not many actors can say that they’ve voiced a character in the most successful animated Disney film of all time and then had sex against a tree on TV. But for Jonathan Groff that’s exactly where his career has gone, from voicing Kristoff in 2013’s Frozen to the gay world of San Francisco on HBO’s Looking.
News: Jonathan Groff Takes the Lead
The show, currently three episodes into a sex-filled second season, follows three gay men as they navigate friendships, love and lust. As Patrick, Groff acts as the show’s center, trying to keep his love life in order while supporting his friends, Agustin and Dom, along the way.
In an interview with ETonline, Groff looks back on his early days on Broadway, reflects on the controversy surrounding his guest role on Glee, and chats candidly about Looking’s sex scenes.

Some of you may be looking at Andy Poon's concept art of Ra’s al Ghul (Matt Nable) and thinking to yourself, is that Oded Fehr ("The Mummy") or Liam Neeson ("Batman Begins")? If you had either of those thoughts you'd be correct on both accounts. Poon, or as I like to call him Poontang, illustrated his Ra's al Ghul costume designs before the role was cast. For fun, he decided to incorporate the likeness of each actor based on the rumors linking Fehr and Neeson to the part. It does Not in anyway mean they were actually considered. Still neat to look at though. Then there is John Gallagher's awesome Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller) costume design, which was not chosen. Boo! Gallagher used elements of the New 52 look for hie Captain Cold design, but producers decided to go in a different direction. The final image below, is...

In the episode "The Flash Is Born," Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) fought the steel-skinned supervillain known as 'Girder,' who was played by Greg Finley. It was a great episode and the highlight was when The Flash delivered a super-sonic punch to the face of his ex-bully. The 'Girder' resembled 'Colossus' from the X-Men films, but the meta-human could've looked much different. Concept artist, John Gallagher ("V"), has posted unused concept art he created for the character, which you can view below. Gallagher also described his thought process: "Playing around with the scrap metal found object aesthetic. The original Girder is a bit wonky looking but here was trying to bridge the original with a next gen look." Greg Finley Guest Stars As DC Comics’ Villain Girder — The Flash (Grant Gustin) faces a new meta-human named Tony (guest star Greg Finley, “Star-Crossed,” “Secret Life of the American Teenager”), who can...

Four months after Aaron Sorkin’s The Newsroom ended its second season on HBO, the cable news drama is officially a go for a third season, which will be its last. It is set to premiere next fall. Sorkin is back as executive producer/showrunner, with former The Office showrunner Paul Lieberstein joining him and executive producers Alan Poul and Scott Rudin as executive producer in Season 3. I hear Lieberstein already had been working with Sorkin on stories behind the scenes. The official renewal comes after months of talks between Sorkin and HBO, with speculation whether Sorkin would come back given his busy feature schedule. But he just turned in his high-profile Jobs script, and will now focus his attention to giving his HBO series a proper conclusion. “The Newsroom is classic Aaron Sorkin – smart, riveting and thought-provoking,” said HBO Programming president Michael Lombardo. “I’m sure this farewell season will be one to remember.

For a while there, seeing Bill Murray in a movie was like spotting a rare animal. Tales of his being difficult to reach and non-committal even when taking film roles were the stuff of legend, but it seems these days he just really wants to work. With roles already in three 2014 films — "Monuments Men," "The Grand Budapest Hotel" and "St. Vincent De Van Nuys" — and currently shooting Cameron Crowe's next effort, Murray has already signed up for his next gig. He'll be joining Frances McDormand, Richard Jenkins, John Gallagher Jr, Zoe Kazan, Jesse Plemons, Brady Corbet, Cory Michael Smith and the also recently added Rosemarie DeWitt in Lisa Cholodenko's HBO miniseries "Olive Kitteridge." Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book by Elizabeth Strout, and adapted by playwright Jane Anderson, the series will chronicle the dirty laundry of one, small New England town as seen through the eyes of the...

Chicago – There’s no television program that can be more simultaneously brilliant and frustrating as Aaron Sorkin’s “The Newsroom,” returning tonight, July 14, 2013, to start an already-tumultuous second season.
It’s crystal clear that Sorkin took some of the criticism of season one to heart (as evidenced right from the less-pretentious new opening credits) but there are still some creative wrinkles that need ironing out. “The Newsroom” is a unique program in that it can be nearly problematic enough to give up on in one scene and then turn it around in the next and show signs of the landmark show it could still become. Much like its emotional rollercoaster of a lead character, it can be exhausting. And exhilarating. And then exhausting again.
Television Rating: 3.5/5.0

The Newsroom seemed to be the love it or, well, not love it show of last season, with critics split over the world of the fictional Acn television news network.
Accolades for the talented cast (Jeff Daniels, Emily Mortimer, Sam Waterston, Dev Patel) abounded, but so did gripes about the portrayal of woman and creator Aaron Sorkin’s own ego.
The second season kicks off tonight and while anchor Will McAvoy (Daniels) works on getting himself out of some hot water, viewers will undoubtedly be looking to the love triangle of Don (Thomas Sadoski), Maggie (Alison Pill) and Jim (John Gallagher, Jr.) to see where it’s heading this year.
I jumped on the phone with Sadoski to chat about where we find Don on The Newsroom Season 2 premiere as well as who, if Maggie – or Sloan (Olivia Munn) for that matter – doesn’t work out, who he’d like...

Two weeks from now Sdcc 2013 will be winding down, so are there enough horror offerings to entice attendees back to the show for Day 4 (July 21)? With "Supernatural" kicking things off bright and early, we say, "Yes!"
Also on the schedule for Sunday (traditionally the family-themed day of the event) are "Under the Dome," an update on the adaptation of George R.R. Martin's werewolf/Pi/serial killer mashup novella The Skin Trade, a chance to build your own monster, surviving in a post-apocalyptic world, a Neil Gaiman Spotlight panel, a look at what's coming from Diamond Select Toys, a how-to on creating suspenseful, exciting, anxiety-inducing stories, and per usual, a screening of "Buffy the Musical: Once More with Feeling" to close things out.
Since the horror offerings are so light, we've expanded our Day 4 highlights list to cover such topics as the future of sci-fi novels, the 50th anniversary of "Doctor Who,...
