Claymation legends Nick Park and Merlin Crossingham will offer stop-motion fans a sneak peek at their upcoming Wallace & Gromit film at this year’s Annecy animation festival.
The still-untitled feature will see inveterate, cheese-loving inventor Wallace designing a “smart gnome” for the family garden who begins to develop a mind of its own. As events spiral out of control, it is up to faithful dog Gromit to put things right. Park and Crossingham co-directed the film, based on a story by Park and a screenplay from Shaun the Sheep and Gnomeo & Juliet writer Mark Burton.
The film, which will premiere on Netflix worldwide outside the U.K., where it will have a first-release window on the BBC, is the second feature from Aardman Animations based on the beloved characters, following the Oscar-winning Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005) and the series of award-winning shorts, including Oscar-winners The Wrong...

#30: Cloud Atlas
Directed by Tom Tykwer, Andy Wachowski and Lana Wachowski
Written by Tom Tykwer, Andy Wachowski and Lana Wachowski
Cloud Atlas is essentially a patchwork of narratives thematically linked with minor coincidences and recurring symbolism. With six stories spanning several centuries, Cloud Atlas explores how the actions and consequences of individual lives impact one another throughout the past, the present and the future. As a parable of how we are all connected, each protagonist in Cloud Atlas wrestles with some form of oppression, based on either gender, age, race, sexual orientation, genetics and so on. In 1850, a young American lawyer sailing on a ship through the South Pacific is slowly being poisoned by a doctor who wants the treasure of gold he is hiding. In the 1930s, an inspiring composer follows his dreams while recounting his journey via love letters to his gay lover. A journalistic potboiler set...

Wreck-It Ralph
Directed by Rich Moore
Written by Jennifer Lee, Phil Johnson
U.S.A., 2012
There was a time when the big family film of the year that everyone wanted to see was in fact the Disney animated feature. It was so for decades literally, up until 1995 when Pixar, which sees its films distributed by Disney, unleashed Toy Story unto the world. From point onwards and till this very day, the most highly anticipated animated film on nearly everyone’s list is almost always the movie from Pixar, not Disney, even if the latter might not lag too far behind. A cursory glance list at some of the most recent Disney films might partially explain why: Home on the Range, Princess and the Frog, Tangled, all of which earned lukewarm to downright poor receptions. The famed studio once again aims for the fences with Wreck-It Ralph, a bizarre cocktail of...

Sacha Baron Cohen has prepared quite the 50th birthday present for James Bond: he's going to spoof him.
The Hollywood Reporter has the news that Cohen's pitch for a spoof of James Bond-style films, which he prepared with screenwriter Phil Johnson, was recently picked up by Paramount. There's no guarantee that Cohen will take a role in the project, but THR reports it's about a James Bond-like spy who "is forced to go on the run with his long-lost brother, a moronic soccer hooligan."
If Cohen were to take a role in the movie, we have a feeling which character it would be. (Hint: it's the latter.) But we'd love to see Cohen take on the suave James Bond spy and maybe have someone who typically plays straight comedic roles be the "moronic" brother.
Apparently Cohen's participation in the film, which is currently untitled, is dependent on his "availability and scheduling.

Leo Records was founded in 1979 by Leo Feigin, a Russian who had emigrated to England. Early in its history, back before the glasnost era, it was most noted for releasing avant-garde Russian jazz at a time when government authorities discouraged the style. As Alexander Alexandrov of Moscow Composers Orchestra says, "What the authorities really hated was free jazz and improvised music – for the reason we loved it, because it was a powerful symbol of individual freedom." Although somehow the Ganelin Trio's first album came out on the official Soviet record label, Melodiya, it was the group's many albums on Leo that earned both the band and Leo world-wide reputations.
Eventually Leo expanded enough that it even had offshoots: Leo Lab for new artists, Golden Years of New Jazz for vintage material. Especially notable from the latter are four superb four-cd sets comprising a series entitled Golden Years of the Soviet...

It's official: Awards season is on, and it's about to be kicked into high gear.
Hot on the heels of yesterday's Gotham Awards, which surprised crowds when the Best Feature honor was bestowed on two movies, "Beginners" and "The Tree of Life," comes the announcement of nominees for the Independent Spirit Awards, which recognizes feature films that are made using "uniqueness of vision" and an "economy of means."
This year's nominations recognized a number of movies and individual performances that have been gaining Oscar buzz, including Elizabeth Olsen's role as a former cult member in "Martha Marcy May Marlene" and Alexander Payne's directorial work on George Clooney vehicle "The Descendents."
The films that made the greatest splash were "Beginners," "Take Shelter" and "Drive," which each scored four nominations. Cancer comedy "50/50" earned an impressive three nominations for Best Feature, Best First Screenplay, and for Anjelica Huston in the Best Supporting Female category.

We all love movies, but it's hard to deny that on occasion, television is a better medium for telling a story. Could The Wire have been as effective as a movie? Could Breaking Bad? Could most great shows? Well the Coen brothers must have a story they think needs a different format to tell, which is why they're heading to the small screen for a new single camera comedy show called HarveKarbo. No, I didn't forget the space. The Coens will be the creators and exec producters, but Phil Johnson...

Breathe deep, guys: Joel and Ethan Coen have a new project coming to the small screen. The pair will be executive producing Harve Karbo for Fox, an hour-long comedy about "a touchy Los Angeles private investigator — and his deadbeat friends in El Segundo — whose cases frequently force him to cross paths with a who's who of Hollywood." Unfortunately the Coens won't actually be writing the show's script, which will instead be put together by Phil Johnson, Cedar Rapids screenwriter and a fellow executive producer on the project alongside Brian Grazer and Francie Calfo. Some would say that with a plot summary like that, the Bored to Death comparisons are inevitable, but I'd venture a guess that there might be a hint of Entourage and a splash of Curb Your Enthusiasm thrown in there, too. Let the wild speculation begin! Regardless of what other [...]...

Cedar Rapids
Directed by: Miguel Arteta
Cast: Ed Helms, John C. Reilly, Anne Heche
Running Time: 1 hr 27 mins
Rating: R
Due Out: June 21, 2011
Plot: Tim Lippe (Helms) has no idea what he’s in for when he’s sent to Cedar Rapids, Iowa to represent his company at an annual insurance convention, where he soon finds himself under the “guidance” of three convention veterans.
Who’S It For? Rabid fans of the films of Judd Apatow, Mike Judge, Todd Phillips and their ilk, will likely tolerate this film, possibly even enjoy it — It’s a workingman’s version of such, dumbed down quite a bit further.
Movie: I feel like I really should have enjoyed this film. But I didn’t. I am the perfect test subject for Cedar Rapids (or perhaps the antithesis of such), as I’ve worked in the insurance industry for the past six years,...

Chicago – It is great to witness a star being born. Ed Helms, who so memorably stole the show in “The Hangover,” breaks out even further with a career defining performance as Tim Lippe in the warm and funny new comedy, “Cedar Rapids.” John C. Reilly, Anne Heche, Sigourney Weaver and Isiah Whitlock Jr. lend essential support.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
Helms plays an insurance salesman, a lifer in a small town branch office who truly cares about his job. The spirit he has developed because of this love becomes a life force that is about to infiltrate an insurance association gathering and change everything, even though he personally wants no change in his life.

Jerry Sloan, who has served as head coach of the NBA's Utah Jazz since Dec. 1988, abruptly announced his retirement on Thursday (Feb. 10).
The 68-year-old coach signed a one-year extension with the team just a few days ago, and is the longest-tenured head coach in all four major sports. Joining him in retirement is also longtime assistant coach, Phil Johnson.
So what caused the sudden departure?
There's been no official confirmation, but following a tough loss to the Chicago Bulls on Wed., speculations have been made that Sloan had a less than friendly run-in with general manager, Kevin O'Connor.
Sloan has over 1,200 wins in his head coaching career, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2009. He will be sorely missed not only in the NBA, but in professional sports in general. ...

Chicago – It takes a man born in Puerto Rico to really understand the Midwest, and director Miquel Arteta proves it in his stellar “Cedar Rapids.” Given an all-star cast including Ed Helms, Anne Heche, Sigourney Weaver and John C. Reilly, Arteta formulates a comedy that feels like the heartland.
Arteta spent his youth moving around Latin America because of his father’s job with Chrysler. After moving to Boston to live with his sister, he learned filmmaking from Harvard University’s documentary program and Wesleyan University, where he met future collaborator Mike White.
His first film, “Star Maps” (1997), was a hit at the Sundance Film Festival, and led him into television directing. Two other films, the Mike White penned “Chuck and Buck” (2001) and “The Good Girl” (2002) both were memorable stories and featured appearances by White, Jake Gyllenhaal, Jennifier Aniston and John C. Reilly. He came back last year with Michael Cera directing “Youth in Revolt.

Chicago – Ed Helms is one hot rising star. After a breakthrough in “The Hangover” in 2009, he continues his climb with the excellent “Cedar Rapids,” co-starring John C. Reilly. All this while playing the affable Andy on TV’s “The Office.”
Helms began his career as a sketch writer in New York City, studying improvisation through the Chicago-originated Uptight Citizens Brigade. After performing stand-up in 2002, he got an opportunity to audition for “The Daily Show,” and was featured there as a field correspondent until 2006. At that time he joined cast of “The Office” as Andy Bernard, the perplexed and lovelorn sales rep.
His notoriety continued in 2009 when he played the tooth-losing dentist Stu Price in the mega-hit “The Hangover,” and has just wrapped “The Hangover, Part II,” due to release this year during Memorial Day weekend.

Any film that stars Ed Helms and John C. Reilly is automatically on my list of movies to watch out for, but the fact that their upcoming flick, "Cedar Rapids," was asked to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival just makes it all the more intriguing. It's the first film to really feature Helms on his own, despite the fact that he has a great supporting cast. Best known for his roles in "The Office" and "The Hangover," it's nice to see Helms get his own starring vehicle.
And a starring vehicle, it should be noted, in which his character beds both Anne Heche and Sigourney Weaver. "My character in the movie does come out of his shell in some interesting ways," Helms told MTV News at Sundance. "He's a very stunted and sheltered man. [Co-star] Anne [Heche] drags him kicking and screaming into maturity."
Helms himself, conversely, jumped at the chance...

"Cedar" rapids has picked up the versatile John C. Reilly who will join Ed Helms in the ensemble road trip comedy being sent out by Fox Searchlight Pictures. Alexander Payne, co-screenwriter of the Academy Award-winning 2004 comedy "Sideways," produces the film alongside Jim Taylor and Jim Burke via their Ad Homimem Enterprises. The Phil Johnson-written story tells of a naive and wholesome man (Helms) from a small Wisconsin town who, after his role model dies, must represent his company at a regional insurance conference which takes place at Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He is blown away by the whole experience of a big town.

- I wonder if three or four years down the road we'll be looking at Paramount Vantage in terms of "before" and "after". The median point might be when the parent company merged operations to save a buck, but it will probably be how their development slate changed -- become more genre specific. With not too many future NCFOMs, Into the Wilds, There Will Be Bloods in the pipeline, today's announcement belongs to the batch of comedy projects that Pv's president Guy Stodel is shepherding, re-tooling the division with the type of fair that seems fit for a certain 18-25 demographic that is elusive with more serious bait. THR reports that Vantage as co-acquired along with Comedy Central the rights to Ghosts/Aliens.
